Dear Friends, The road to the World Premiere of ANDY: A Popera began as all great artistic partnerships should begin: over yoga, pizza, and beer! In early 2014, after a particularly grueling yoga session, we started talking about the artistic values shared by Opera Philadelphia and The Bearded Ladies Cabaret: utilizing great music, virtuosic singing, and theatrical experimentation to connect with contemporary audiences. In the course of our conversation about ways to team Philadelphia’s opera company with its rising cabaret troupe, John brought up the great Andy Warhol, an artist who frequently appropriated popular culture and negotiated the realms of high art and low art, bringing everyday items like soup cans, Brillo boxes into a museum so that we looked at them from a new perspective. By the end of pizza and beer, a Popera had been born! These past two years have been a collaborative journey that has joyously forced both of our companies to abandon our usual ways of creating art in order to do something new. We created ANDY in three stages, releasing bits and pieces in popup performances and staging a cabaret show at the Wilma Theater 14 months ago, yielding which valuable insights into the work that informed its development to tonight’s final stage. We have been fortunate to have the support of Knight Foundation throughout this process from its early development to its culmination on the stage. Victoria Rogers, Knight Foundation’s vice president for arts, and her staff have enthusiastically embraced our exploration of the phenomenon that is Andy Warhol. We thank them for their amazing support! We also thank the William Penn Foundation and The Pew Center for Arts and Heritage for funding this exciting project. This is the story of a boy who becomes a brand. The question we explore is: what is the cost? From the beginning, we have explored that question by bringing together artists and audiences from different fields, and we could not ask for a better venue than the Fringe Festival for this experiment to come alive. Thank you for coming along for the ride!
