Opera Philadelphia is thrilled to present its 42nd season, a season teeming with lust and love, passion and power. We launch in the fall of 2016 with an exciting binge-watching format, packing three rousing productions into an 11-day period. Opening the season is the World Premiere of Breaking the Waves, based on the Oscar-nominated film by Lars von Trier. The production is a meditation on the nature of goodness, faith, and loyalty from composer Missy Mazzoli and librettist Royce Vavrek. Audiences can simultaneously enjoy Christine Goerke in the title role of Puccini’s Turandot, an iron princess whose icy façade may finally be melted by love. The lively production at the Academy of Music features an Opening Night Gala and a free Opera on the Mall broadcast in HD. Rounding out our fall lineup is the American Premiere of a radical, African-set Macbeth from Third World Bunfight, presented at the Prince Theater as part of the Curated 2016 Fringe Festival. With spring comes the highly anticipated role debut of star mezzo Stephanie Blythe in Rossini’s Tancredi, a love story set amid devastating war and featuring the company debut of soprano Brenda Rae as Amenaide. Finally, an impressive cast draws the season to a comedic close in Mozart’s masterful The Marriage of Figaro at the Academy of Music. This electrifying slate provides the perfect warmup for the fall of 2017, when we introduce a brand-new approach to opening an opera season: an annual 12-day festival with seven operatic happenings across the city. With many sensational productions on the horizon, we invite opera lovers from all over the globe to join us as we bring our inventive vision to life here in Philadelphia.
