The fine wines of South Africa and Australia Reflecting the growth in the rising popularity of the wines of Australia and those of South Africa’s Cape Province, Opimian has concentrated this cellar offering on the wines of these countries, moving other southern hemisphere wines to our Special Offering. Growth in the demand for Australian and South African wines shows no sign of diminution and in many countries they are more popular than those of France. With each passing year, South Africa is making better wines and although it is classified as a “new world” area, the wines can be considered to be in between the new and old world styles. But, how the infants of “down under” have grown! The steady and stable climates of the southern continents, allied to the advantages of water control through irrigation, ensure that year after year the vintages produce perfectly ripened fruit, the material that well-trained, innovative winemakers use to encapsulate the typical characteristics of their varieties and terroirs.

After a catastrophic earthquake in 1969, the entire village of Tulbagh, its centuries-old homesteads, its vineyards and the infrastructure had to be rebuilt. The terrible events which took place under the high mountains are now a distant memory with the wineries restored and prospering. Theuniskraal, a legendary estate, has passed through the Jordaan family for four generations, with each of the children joining the team at an early age.

Andries Jordaan named his Sauvignon Blanc after the lovely, indigenous Ixia flower. Straw green, gooseberry, redcurrant and lemon aromas are full and assertive on the nose and palate.

Medium to full-bodied, the lively acidity is intertwined with crisp fruit, the finish is long. [01] M9 D9

This clever blend was the first red wine ever produced by this winery. The wine is dominated by the obvious juiciness of the Ruby Cabernet with its distinctive fruit and low tannins adjusted to perfection by the addition of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The result is soft and fruit-laden with sweet-smelling, tasty berry notes and fine balance.

Tulbagh has one of the coldest climates in South Africa, which completely shuts down the vines in winter. Although, watching the teams of pickers driving out to the vines in a train of carts during the hot summer nights, the intense cold of winter seems far away. M8 D8

Underneath the huge granite outcrop that towers above the township, it took its name from the glistening, pearly sheen after rainfall. The owner, Craig Lardner, whose every wine was commended by the IWSC, is very much an innovator and one of the first Cape growers to embrace screwtops. Pale straw in colour, the intense aroma captures pineapple, passion fruit and fragrant notes of white flowers.

The buzzing alcohol propels the wine to a high level of intensity where a concentrated, red cherry colour opens the door to blackcurrants infused with dark chocolate and vanilla with small additions of cedar and smoke. The name of the winery means “Home of the Stars” and it is entirely appropriate as the wines are superb! Made by Ntsiki Biyela, voted South Africa’s Woman Winemaker of the Year 2009, she is clearly at the top of her game. This wine, inspired by the brightest star in the constellation, Crux, is a barrel-aged blend of Merlot, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first appearance of the concentrated, deep purple colour, to the aroma gathering in the bowl of the glass, it is clear that Ntsiki had wonderful material with which to work. Over the thirteen years that Bernhard Vellar has been owner and winemaker, there have been moments of crisis and gloom, particularly some years ago when the vines were infected by the leaf roller virus which could only be overcome by re-planting. Fortunately, that is now in the past and the reds are back to their remarkable quality. This is quintessentially a cool climate wine, closer to Bordeaux than it is to Barossa. Elegant, it shows a whole range of balanced, integrated characteristics; it is clearly a wine of excellent quality and one that shows the great depth of the Cape country’s wine styles. M6 D6

Jacques introduced us to his rosé a couple of years ago and with the growth in the popularity of blushing pink wine we have been entirely persuaded. The grapes from Jacques’ Clovelly Estate vineyard were de-stemmed to restrain tannins and produce a supple palate before crushing and fermentation at controlled low temperatures. It has a modern, fruit-driven style with masses of mineral-edged fruit and an utterly light body. Starting with a seductive and delicate pink colour it goes on to an elegant nose of red fruits and pears with a note of brioche on the palate.

The name says it all; this is a beautiful mass of fruit-filled nuances, cassis mixed with a hint of earth and warming fruit. The sappy spice that swirls round the mouth, fills the nose with the vigour of freshly crushed blackberry and acerbic boysenberry. Jacques has ripened his fruit, crushed it, filtered out the fruit pulp and run it into bottles. As friendly as a red wine can be, it seems to have just come from the winery, appealing to be opened and enjoyed immediately. Entirely undemanding, it is a great wine for anytime and every day. The estate sits on a north-facing slope with a range of different soils that allows Jacques to be site-specific in the management of his vines. His Chardonnay, reaching perfect maturity early, is blended with wine from one of the best plots in Robertson, where higher temperatures with low rainfall concentrate and add power to the fruit. The style is reminiscent of the rich wines of Sonoma, but, at this price, few can come close for the sheer opulence and vibrancy of the fruit. It floods the bouquet with rich peach aromas, pineapple, butterscotch and light oak. Developing in the mouth, it has good weight and ends with an intense grip of spice on the palate. [00] M7 D7

The Patina Syrah is one of those massive wines that makes one ponder whether they should be sipped, quaffed or gifted as a legacy. The colour is colossal, dark, brooding, rich purple, completely opaque in the centre. It is huge in the glass from which sweet fruit, laced with tar, chocolate and pine, pours out to fill the room with heady perfume.

Cassis and currant feature with meaty, leathery and coffee flavours predominating while the palate is filled with rich blackcurrant and dark chocolate tones. Full-bodied, a solid wedge of tannin gives a firm structure that follows through on the aftertaste. M6 D7

When Jacques’ family purchased the estate there was a solid belt of eucalyptus along the northern boundary that cast a long shadow and seriously reduced sunshine exposure. This led to the wines having a green, acidic flavour.

The trees have since gone, leaving a legacy of residue that carries into the glass with a delightful hint of pine and smoke with an herbal element. Flavours of blackcurrant, mulberry and herbs are fine, elegant and juicy. There’s a smidgen of vanillin in the mid-palate, although the brambly, blackcurrant flavours demand all the attention. Wellrounded, mint, soft tannins and toasty vanilla also make their contribution. M7 D7

These wines are a tribute to Maggie, Big Sam and Bollie who supervised the vineyard over the years; a procession of white dogs who left their mark in the vineyard and on its owners, the Fraser family. This Shiraz, partially aged in French oak, is fruit-forward and concentrated, reflecting the complexity that is typical of the cool climate of the Margaret River.

SONGLINES ESTATES Milsons Point, New South Wales Ken Christie and Pierre Chanzonkov, Opimian General Manager, spent a week with the partners in Songlines Estates learning of the mystical abilities of Australia’s Aboriginal people who pilot their way across their unforgiving country by following the traditional pathways known as “songlines”.

Songlines wines are named to respect these ancient mysteries insisting on an uncompromising selection of fruit from the greatest vineyards. This ensures that only perfect grapes reach the winery where, Australian legendary winemaker, John Duval joins David Fatches to work their art producing small batches of impeccable wines.

About the Cover by Martin Krajewski: Barramundi Hunting This painting illustrates the muddy waters in the river system swollen after the wet season when the barramundi swim from the billabongs to the river ways. It displays five barramundi travelling across the creeks and rivers and tells of the Aboriginal men, the hunters and gatherers, collecting goose eggs and bush tucker.

The footprints are their pathways. The circles depict the men and women sitting separately in the traditional way whilst the ‘blue dot bubbles’ between the many painted circles are ‘Songlines’ or ancient tracks that act as maps and guide the Aboriginal people across the land.

Colin Jones, ‘KO-Or’ in his native language, is the artist of this painting. He was born of Aboriginal grandparents and his heritage belongs to the Kalkadoon and Nunuckle (West and Southern Queensland) tribal groups. Most of his childhood was spent with his Aboriginal grandfather, learning traditional practices that had been handed down for countless generations. Now an acclaimed Aboriginal historian and artist he writes: “All Aboriginal Art, ancient or contemporary, conveys a story and provides a record of our history, documenting events and human experiences with the earth, our Mother. It carries our culture for future generations and tells of how to look after the land, hunting and gathering, our creation, the Dreamtime stories and of our ceremonial and spiritual traditions. Learning to read our Art is like reading a book that provides a greater insight and understanding of the oldest living culture on earth.”

We took ‘Songlines’ as the name for our exceptional wines as the concept perfectly encapsulates the importance of the land and the passionate men who work it and walk upon it and the knowledge gathered over countless time in both the Old and New wine worlds.

HASTWELL & LIGHTFOOT McLaren Vale What started 22 years ago as a partnership between old friends Mark and Wendy Hastwell and Martin and Jill Lightfoot, has the added responsibility of a 35 acre vineyard. Basing their future on the observation, "there has got to be something better to do than work in an office”, the partners purchased land on the northern slopes of McLaren Vale which was ploughed, then planted with the aid of Australia’s premier viticulture advisor, Geoff Hardy. By November 1988, what had been a bare paddock had become a 13 acre trellised and irrigated vineyard.

Today, the partners’ wines are among the richest, most concentrated and complex wines of Australia.

This “big bully” is a muscular monster with the finesse of a gentle giant. NEIL McGUIGAN, BLACK SPRINGS VINEYARD Nulkaba, New South Wales The producer of our Black Springs Vineyard wines, Neil McGuigan, needs little introduction to members. He was our first Australian dynastic winemaker, following his famous father and brothers into the family winery and later into partnership at Briar Ridge, where he built his reputation, and that of Briar Ridge, over a period of years. Growing up in the Hunter Valley, Neil’s career has been one of immersion in every aspect of wine management, beginning when he was described as “the most brilliant winemaker of our times”. Today, Neil has re-joined his brother at the family winery but produces the Black Springs Vineyard wines exclusively for Opimian.

Stop the Presses! At the International Wine Challenge held in London, England the first week in September, Neil McGuigan was named International White Winemaker of the Year. His wines were awarded four trophies as well as two gold, nine silver and ten bronze medals.

The fruit, from Neil’s eight acre vineyard, came from small distinctive parcels blended before fermentation to help enrich the complexity of the finished wine. Difficult, cool and humid vintage conditions contributed to a bouquet showing spice and herbaceousness with the solid entry offering brambly fruit, plump black berries and prevalent, but not excessive, oak. Australian Pinot Noir produces rich wines with a fuller body than those of Burgundy. Cool soaking was followed by fermentation during which the cap of skins and grape pulp were plunged twice daily during the two weeks on the skins. Later, malolactic fermentation and maturation in small barrels for five months was followed by blending and bottling. It has lovely red fruit with ripe, sweet plum already developing complexity on the nose. Long and silky, without great weight or body, the rich palate is well supported by stalky tannins. M7 D7

Even though the summer was abnormally dry, the 2009 vintage was especially good with early rains setting up the vines to produce excellent fruit. Grapes were harvested sooner than usual and yields were lower than average, but the wine has a deep crimson colour with striking purple edges. The nose, of crushed mulberry and blueberry, has lashings of anise, musk and pungent black pepper. The medium-bodied palate has easy, soft tannins with fresh blackberry fruits, rounded, textured and supported by fine, dusty tannin with underlying spice. M7 D8

Pale green with a silver touch, the grapes came from close to Canberra and from the highly rated King Valley. At the winery, the night-picked fruit was gently pressed separately, in full bunches to conserve its delicacy. It was then cleaned in tanks, before slow chilled fermentation and until completely dry before blending. The nose is filled with vibrant tropical and sappy green notes which continue in the mouth where the essential expressions of both varieties marry harmoniously in a seamless expression of passion fruit, lemons and limes. The nose has great depth and intense attributes which subdivide into plums with blueberries and nutmeg, cedar and vanilla. All the parts come together in the mouth with an elegant harmony that highlights dark berry flavours, succulent, fine-grained tannins and perfect integration of all the elements. The fruit was hand-harvested then delivered to the Westend winery where it was fermented in traditional vats.

Before the end of fermentation, the mash was pressed and then run into casks for a minimum of 12 months. It is superb, spicy and clean, filled with interest and sufficient tannin to live for several years. M6 D7

The original family winery has now become part of a major group, allowing Geoff to follow his own stars and interests in vine propagation, supplying several million young vines annually to South Australian vintners and his four vineyards at Angas, Wirrega, Pertaringa and Kuitpo.

Geoff used a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as in Champagne, to create his recently developed pink sparkler.

The grapes come from Geoff’s own vineyards on the Adelaide Hills and the Limestone Coast where, after pressing and blending, they are fermented into a delicate base wine prior to the second fermentation which produces a persistently fine mousse, the “Fizz”. Before bottling, the sweetness was adjusted resulting in a crisp, light, strawberry and red apple flavoured bubbly. Until Hardy’s recent vineyard plantings, the unusual Arneis vine had declined to such a degree that it had practically died out. In Italy’s Piedmont regional dialect it means “little rascal” befitting its characteristics because of its low yield and notorious difficulty during cultivation; its great virtue is found in the delightful fragrance of its wines. This was ample reason for Geoff, the most highly regarded vine specialist in Australia, to persevere. The white peaches nose is augmented by the perfume of white flowers and freshly shelled almonds. The palate, unusual for the variety, has fine acidity, inherited from the coolness of the Adelaide Hills, excellent body and subtle mineral/flint nuances. [01] M7 D8

The fruit for this delicious white was selected from Geoff’s K1 vineyard. He used the best parcels to make a fruit-driven wine with excellent balance which can be enjoyed without years of cellaring and offers excellent quality and consistency. It is one of the biggest wines I have ever seen in a glass, almost too rich for anything but sipping; but then my second thought was I mustn’t knock over the glass. The colour will wreck the furniture!” It pours from a special bottle, heavy and crafted to look huge, the wine almost glutinously slipping into the glass.

The nose is massive, packed with every conceivable berry from the hedgerows, all of them full and ripe. On the palate, a solid wedge of tannin coats the tongue, but all that fruit will not be denied and oozes sweetly across the mouth. Can more be written because words are hardly adequate? Geoff Hardy’s wine comes from the Mount Lofty Ranges and is based on Cabernet Sauvignon although the term Meritage can include any combination of Bordeaux varietals agreed to in 1988 by a group of US based vintners. Lively and attractive, the colour is a solidly compact deep red with the powerful aroma of ripe strawberries, blackcurrants and cherries.

Filling the palate with soft fruit flavours, it is emphatically cassis but is enhanced by bell pepper leaves, rose petals and tea with a pungent dash of spice and the buzz of alcohol. It has developed nicely with rounded characteristics and plenty of robust wood tannin that slips away with pleasing volume into a long finish. M6 D7

This almost forgotten Bordeaux classic is showing signs of a come-back, but like Carmenere, it needs full sunshine exposure over a long period to completely ripen the fruit and soften aggressive acidity. Sourced from Hardy’s estate, the grapes were destemmed, crushed and cold soaked for four days. Fermentation was on the skins in open top tanks before pressing into one year old French oak for 18 months.

The nose is rammed full of blackcurrants, violets, cinnamon and black olives with red berry fruits enveloping the entire front palate. Fine-grained tannins build across the wine to ensure cellaring will be rewarded. M6 D6
