Our first cellar offering of the season takes us to the Southern Hemisphere which has had a successful 2013 vintage. Warwick Wine Estate in South Africa has stupendous wines which were a great success with Opimians last year. Canadian born Norma Ratcliffe is still very involved in the day to day operations although she has handed over winemaking responsibilities to the very capable Nic van Aarde. It seems that Norma’s son Mike has fingers in many pies (or should I say vats) for he is a joint partner in Vilafonté with Californian duo extraordinaire Zelma Long and Dr. Phil Freese as well as a venture with Bonnievale Cellar in the Robertson Valley. All of which give us some great wines to drink. Add to these the wines brought to us by Wine Concepts and we have a great selection from South Africa. Much to our chagrin, due to the very short harvest in New Zealand, we were only able to offer three white wines from Manuka Hill last year. This year we have increased the number of wines produced for Opimian and have included some reds. Central Otago is one of the trendy areas, its continental climate and short growing season making it suitable for fine Pinot Noir. Try the Tua Tua Bay Reserve Pinot Noir 2012. Australia has also had a good harvest in 2013 witnessed by some great value wines from Berton Vineyard and Geoff Hardy Wines. This cellar offering is completed with wines from our friends at Briar Ridge Vineyard, Hastwell & Lightfoot Vineyards and Shottesbrooke Vineyards. Warwick Wine Estate p. 4

Warwick Wine Estate

South Africa

If South Africa has some of the most beautiful vineyard settings in the world, then Warwick Wine Estate is one of the most beautiful and welcoming estates. It has become a popular day out for South Africans and holds famous “gourmet picnics”, so if you are ever in the region don’t hesitate to visit. The estate was purchased by Canadian born (Edmonton, but don’t let that put off those from Calgary the wines are too good!) Norma Ratcliffe and husband Stan in 1964. The first vines were planted in 1971 and Norma has been responsible for making some of the best wines in South Africa since 1984, until handing over the reins to Nic van Aarde. She is still engaged in day to day operations with her son Mike Ratcliffe having taken over as Managing Director, and daughter Jenny as regional manager.

Warwick Wine Estate has implemented an environment friendly/biological approach in their vineyards

Warwick The First Lady Unoaked Chardonnay, 2013 Named after Warwick Wine Estate’s very own first lady Norma Ratcliffe, a bottle was recently presented to Michelle Obama during an official visit to South Africa. The 2013 Unoaked Chardonnay was tasted as a tank sample and so was a little cloudy as it was unfiltered, but it was brimming with exotic tropical fruit flavours, ripe peaches, and honey. The grapes were picked in the early hours of the morning and gently pressed in a pneumatic press. The clarified juice was fermented using various aromatic yeasts and remained on fine lees for six months with lees-stirring on a weekly basis.

Warwick Estate Professor Black Sauvignon Blanc, Stellenbosch, 2013 At one time Warwick Wine Estate was part of a much larger property known as the farm of great success (De Goede Sukses). Professor Black was a researcher at the University of Stellenbosch charged with developing a peach variety that ripened early and could withstand some of the strong winds experienced in the region. Sauvignon Blanc grape vines are now cultivated on the plot that was previously his experimental orchard. The cooler 2013 vintage has produced a wine with tangy lime citrus flavours, zesty acidity and a lingering finish.

Warwick Estate White Lady Chardonnay, Stellenbosch, 2012 I defy anyone who enjoys a glass of fine white Burgundy to not enjoy this wine. Intense toasty oak, fruit and buttery notes are expressed on the nose. Mellow and rich on the palate, this wine is complex with a long finish. The wine was fermented with natural wild yeast in French oak barrels and matured for a further 10 months on lees with weekly rolling of the barrels. The oak and the fruit are perfectly integrated.

Warwick The First Lady Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012 Deep ruby in colour, The First Lady Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 has intense smoky fruit aromas of blueberries with floral violets. On the palate the juicy blackberry and blackcurrant flavours of crushed fruits combine with astringency and good structure that will mellow with some time in bottle. Each vineyard parcel was hand-picked in the early morning and the grape bunches crushed and destemmed into open top fermenters. After two to four days cold maceration the fermentation was carried out with daily pump overs, punch downs and rack and returns to extract full flavours and colour. It was matured in two, three and four year old French oak barrels for 18 months.

Warwick Red Lady Cape Blend, 2011 Produced from a blend of 55% Syrah, 31% Pinotage and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Red Lady Cape Blend is made in a similar way to, but is softer and ready for earlier drinking than The First Lady Cabernet Sauvignon; it’s also a year older. The palate is soft and mellow and the 18 months in French oak barrels is perfectly integrated with forest fruit flavours, mulberries, and cherries. Each grape variety was vinified separately in open top fermenters and subsequently blended.

Warwick Old Bush Vines Pinotage, Stellenbosch, 2012 The Pinotage variety, a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, was created in 1925 by Professor Perold at Stellenbosch University. It remains unique to South Africa, occupies approximately 6% of vineyard area and is made in a range of styles. The Warwick Old Bush Vines Pinotage is modern in style. Vibrant purple in colour, it has intense blackcurrant and blackberry aromas. On the palate it is concentrated with the same black fruit flavours, good acidity and firm tannins. The fruit was hand-picked in early February from a single vineyard of 20 year old bush vines. It was aged for nine months in French oak barrels.

Warwick Three Cape Ladies Cape Blend, 2011 This wine is fabulous. The 2011 blend is slightly different than last year’s 2010 which was very popular with Opimians. A small proportion of Merlot, 4%, is included in the blend creating a rich, textured wine with great structure. The nose is a complex bouquet of violets, black cherries and other forest fruits. Coffee leads to mellow chocolate flavours on the palate and chewy tannins. The wine was matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% new, and is named in recognition of the three generations of ladies at Warwick Wine Estate – Norma, her daughter Jenny and granddaughter Eve. Delicious to drink already, it will continue to mature for years to come.

Warwick Estate Trilogy, Stellenbosch, 2011 Trilogy is Warwick Wine Estate’s flagship wine and has become something of a standard bearer for South Africa. This blend of Bordeaux varietals is produced from 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 14% Merlot. Fruit aromas of blackcurrants and black cherries mingle with a hint of smoke. The palate is light to medium-bodied with fresh red fruit acidity and a succulent savoury finish. After fermentation the wine was aged for 26 months in French oak barrels, 60% new.

The region with limestone soils is warm and dry, benefitting from the influence of the Indian Ocean. Bonnievale Cellar sits on a ridge above the town and is owned by approximately 100 grape growers and produces some great value wines. The grapes were handpicked in the cool early morning and fermented with a touch of oak.

Bonnievale Sauvignon Blanc, Bonnievale, 2013 Robertson has developed quite a reputation for white wine production. Summers are hot and rainfall is low, but the south-easterlies help to funnel cool air from the Indian Ocean into the valley. The grapes for the Bonnievale Sauvignon Blanc come from vines aged five to 10 years and were picked by hand in February. Soft and easy to drink, the wine has limey, herbal and grassy notes so typical of the grape with medium body and a lime citrus flavour.

Vilafonté Series M, 2011 This wine has pedigree and it shows in the glass. Vilafonté is a joint venture between Mike Ratcliffe, Californian winemaker Zelma Long (one-time CEO of Simi Winery in Sonoma County) and former Opus One and Mondavi VP of Viticulture Dr. Phil Freese. Located on the northern side of the Simonsberg Mountains in the Paarl-Simonsberg subregion, the name of the estate is derived from the primary soil type. Vilafontes is one of the oldest recorded soil types in the world and is defined somewhere between 750,000 and 1.5 million years old. The Series M takes its name from the Malbec and Merlot which predominate in the blend that includes Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 16 months in 60% new French oak barrels and a further year in bottle prior to release, the wine will benefit from more time in bottle. A little restrained on the nose with green bean aromas, the palate is dense, rich and succulent with fine-grained tannins. Delicious to drink, it will open up and develop complexity over the coming years.

Wine concepts Wine Concepts specializes in sourcing wines from the Cape, so it is no wonder that they work with many producers in Stellenbosch. This small town and its dramatic surroundings are the heart of the South African wine industry. Here we put forward two estates – De Meye Wines owned by the Myburgh family for generations with a long history of farming this land and making wine, and the more recently established Vrede Wines.

De Meye Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch, 2013 Chenin Blanc is the most widely planted white wine grape variety in South Africa. There is more planted here than even France’s Loire Valley, the variety’s original home. De Meye is a family-owned boutique winery which has been in the Myburgh family for generations; current owners Jan and Philip represent the fifth and sixth generation. The first Myburgh came to South Africa in 1665 and the winery is named after his birthplace in Holland. The De Meye 2013 Chenin Blanc has typical intense peardrops, melon and honey aromas with medium body and good acidity.

De Meye Shiraz, Stellenbosch, 2011 Environmental considerations have always been a priority at De Meye. The estate has opened a little restaurant inspired by locally sourced seasonal ingredients. The estate also produces organic lavender oil. The wines are made by winemaker Marcus Milner and are consistently rated highly by South Africa’s leading wine guide Platter’s Wines of South Africa. The De Meye Shiraz 2011 is intense with chocolate and spice on the nose. It is concentrated on the palate with juicy black fruit and a long finish. This wine will continue to develop. The grapes, coming from 60% old clone and 40% new clone vineyards, were hand-picked with a low yield of six tons per hectare. The wine was aged in a combination of 90% French and 10% American oak for 16 months.

Vrede Charmé Shiraz, Stellenbosch, 2011 A mellow wine which, as the name suggests, is charming indeed. Red and black fruit aromas are enhanced by a touch of herbs. The wine is well-balanced with fine tannins, medium weight and long cherry fruit flavour. The grapes are grown on the rolling foothills of Stellenbosch Mountain against the eastern slope of the Bottelary ward.

Vrede Vineyard Select Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch, 2009 Despite its years of maturity, this wine is fresh and bursting with Cabernet Sauvignon character and has plenty of life ahead of it. The 2009 vintage was excellent with small berries producing concentrated wines. The bouquet has aromas of red fruits, blackcurrants, menthol and violets. Pure and elegant, the palate reveals fresh blueberry and flavours of violet. Produced from selected barrels, the grapes were cultivated on east-west facing vineyards planted on decomposed granite soils at 97M above sea level. After a cold soak the grapes were fermented and the wine subsequently aged for 24 months in French oak barrels.

Vrede Vineyard Select Lourentius van Andringa, Stellenbosch, 2010

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc

With more weight and body on the palate, this wine will improve with time in the cellar. It is produced from Bordeaux varietals with Cabernet Sauvignon dominating at 70%, combined with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The vines are at 170M altitude on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains. The grapes were hand-picked and left to cold soak prior to fermentation. Mellow forest fruits, spices and smoke aromas are apparent on the nose. Firm acidity on the palate leads to blackcurrant flavours and fine tannins. This is top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vrede Vineyard Select Andrea, Stellenbosch, 2010 Vrede vineyards cover 52ha on land where cows grazed before its transformation from a dairy farm. The ambiance is tranquil and indeed Vrede means peace or tranquillity. A mild Mediterranean climate prevails; generous sunshine is tempered by the cool breezes blowing in from the ocean. 2010 was an intense year – tricky in the vineyard, great in the cellar. The Andrea 2010 is a Cape blend with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Pinotage, and 17% Petit Verdot. A spicy wine with red fruits, it is quite light and soft on the palate with mellow vanilla and fruit flavours. Manuka Hill Estate Waitakere City, North Island

Growers in New Zealand have many issues to contend with; if it’s not the high level of rainfall and the disease pressure this ensues or the cool temperatures that make ripening grapes a nail-biting experience, it’s the possibility of earthquakes. Despite all this grape-growing continues to attract new followers. Last year there were a staggering 33,500ha of vineyards compared to 5,600ha in the 1980s and a mere 400ha in the 1960s. Peter Fredatovich was a pioneer when he started growing grapes in the Auckland region in 1937. Today his family continues the tradition producing the Tua Tua Bay wines for Opimian and expanding into areas such as Central Otago. After the small 2012 crop, the 2013 vintage has produced concentrated wines and decent volumes. In this cellar offering we have been able to expand the range to include some exciting red wines.

Tua Tua Bay Pinot Gris, Marlborough, 2013 While Sauvignon Blanc remains the dominant variety in Marlborough, the region produces very fine Pinot Gris. Last year, I noted that the 2012 Tua Tua Bay Pinot Gris was one of the best New Zealand Pinot Gris that I had ever tasted. I think the 2013 is even better. Aromas of ripe pears and fresh green apples lead to a soft palate with scrumptious white fruits and floral notes. It has a touch of residual sugar, so for those that find Sauvignon Blanc a little too dry and tart give this a whirl. It is perfect with Asian dishes.

Tua Tua Bay Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, 2013 Sauvignon Blanc is what put New Zealand on the map in wine terms and it remains the number one grape variety planted. The high level of sunlight and cool temperatures produce very specific flavours unique to this country. The Tua Tua Bay Sauvignon Blanc is produced from grapes cultivated in the Wairau Valley of Marlborough at the northern end of the South Island. Pale in colour, the wine has grassy aromas combined with limes and sherbet, and a steely mineral finish.

Manuka Hill Merlot Malbec, Hawkes Bay, 2012 Hawkes Bay in the North Island of New Zealand is the place to go for Bordeaux varietals. The wide bay located about half way down the east coast is protected from the westerlies by the Ruahine and Kaweka ranges and has a maritime climate with relatively low rainfall and warmer temperatures. Both Merlot and Malbec do well here. This wine has an intense white and grey pepper spicy nose; red fruits shine through on the palate complementing the spice. Produced from a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Malbec the wine was aged for eight months in French oak barrels.

Manuka Hill Merlot Cabernet, Hawkes Bay, 2012 Hawkes Bay has a variety of rich alluvial and less fertile gravelly soils. Despite its warmer climate, average temperatures are still lower than in Bordeaux and so site selection is all important if the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon is to fully mature. A blend of 88% Merlot with 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine is bright ruby in colour with red berries and pepper aromas. On the palate it has cassis and berry flavours with grippy tannins. It will benefit from some cellaring prior to drinking.

Tua Tua Bay Reserve Pinot Noir, Central Otago, 2012 Central Otago in the South Island is the southernmost wine region in the world. The area has the only continental climate in the country with relatively warm, but very short summers requiring an early-ripening variety. It makes world class Pinot Noir and this has driven interest and investment in its expansion. Fifteen years ago there were only 14 wine producers with less than 200ha. Last year there were 121 wineries and over 1500ha of vines. The 2012 Tua Tua Bay Reserve Pinot Noir has a delicious wild strawberry and vanilla oak bouquet. Soft and rich, it has fine silky texture with persistent and complex flavours. Produced from a variety of Pinot Noir clones, the wine was matured in French oak barrels for 14 months.

Berton Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay, Eden Valley, 2013 The spiritual home of Berton Vineyards is high up in the Eden Valley, where Bob planted his first vineyard, even if they have expanded into other areas. Eden Valley has a long history of viticulture going back to the 1850s and is recognized as one of Australia’s premium regions. The warm days, cool nights, dry summers and wet winters create the perfect conditions for fine Chardonnay. The 2013 Berton Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay is bright yellow in colour. Mellow spice, toast and fruit aromas continue to a rich palate with lingering flavours of ripe pineapples, peaches, and pears.

Berton Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, High Eden, 2010 The best Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a fine, silky texture and cassis-accented flavours. Berton Vineyard’s Cabernet Sauvignon vines are cultivated in the High Eden on ancient podsolic soils with a high level of quartz. Low crop levels meant 2010 was generally a good quality vintage despite some high temperature days. This wine is deep in colour with ripe black fruits, olives, vanilla and a savoury edge to the bouquet. Fine-grained silky tannins define the palate with long-lasting flavour and great balance. This is a wine to savour. Delicious now it will continue to improve.

Briar Ridge Vineyard Hunter Valley, Mount View, New South Wales Briar Ridge Vineyard, based in Australia’s oldest wine-growing region, the lower Hunter Valley, has a reputation for producing great quality wines. It is owned by geologist turned vigneron John Davis, who as one might expect, has a passion for soils and geologically influenced vineyards. This has led him to the Hunter Valley and Orange in New South Wales at altitude with deep volcanic soils and Wrattonbully in South Australia with its acclaimed Terra Rossa soils.

The synergy of the three varieties creates the classic styles of the Trio wines - full, fresh and all flavour

Stonefields Vineyard Pinot Gris, Wrattonbully, 2012 Wrattonbully, in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, lies to the north of its more famous neighbour Coonawarra. Vineyards are planted on gently undulating slopes of Terra Rossa soils derived from ancient coastal dunes and seabed formations that give the region its name. The 2012 Pinot Gris is a great food wine with spicy aromas, honey and fig flavours, good weight, and balanced acidity.

Stonefields Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Wrattonbully, 2011 Limestone pebbles are found scattered throughout the Stonefields Wrattonbully vineyard, hence the name. The climate is warmer than neighbouring Coonawarra and Cabernet Sauvignon thrives on these Terra Rossa soils. The 2011 has ripe plummy fruits and sweet caramel strawberry flavours on the palate.

White Trio, Hunter Valley and Orange, 2012 Lovely herbal leafy notes with spice aromas show in this blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chardonnay. 60% of the blend is Sauvignon Blanc grown in the cool Orange region on deep, rich volcanic soils at an altitude of 800M. The Semillon and Chardonnay, 20% of each, were grown in the warmer Hunter Valley and give the wine weight and depth. The grapes were pressed and the must left to settle and racked prior to fermentation at low temperature producing a fresh style with lingering herbal flavours. It is a great match with seafood or herb salads and sauces.

Rosé Trio, Orange, 2012 The Trio, being Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, are grown in a field blend specific plot on the slopes of Mount Canobolas in the Orange region. Rain during the crucial flowering period in November led to reduced yields, however the warm conditions in March and April allowed full maturity to be achieved prior to picking for rosé production. The 2012 Rosé Trio is a delightful pale salmon colour with a fresh crisp palate and good balance. After picking and pressing, the chilled must was racked and inoculated with selected yeast.

The Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest wine region with vineyards first planted in 1830 by the “father of Australian viticulture” James Busby. Busby had travelled extensively around Spain and France collecting 547 “varieties of vines” including six cuttings of Syrah from the hill of Hermitage in the northern Rhône Valley. These cuttings could well be the mother of many of Australia’s best Shiraz. In 2012 the weather was so bad that the grapes were sourced from the vineyard at Orange. Shiraz was cultivated on welldrained red clays over limestone-based soils. Deep plum in colour, the 2012 has spicy incense, lavender and rosemary aromas. It is quite light on the palate with a long, elegant floral finish. It was aged for 14 months in 70% French and 30% American oak barrels.

Shottesbrooke Vineyards McLaren Vale

In the late 60s Nick Holmes started out in the wine business as a cellar hand. His dream was to establish a vineyard and make his own wines; this came true in 1984 when he founded Shottesbrooke Vineyards. Nick named his vineyard after an estate in Berkshire, England where his grandfather was vicar of the parish from 1905 to 1926. The Shottesbrooke label is adapted from the wonderful stained glass window in the transept of the church. After 45 years in the wine industry, Nick recently retired to take the time to enjoy the fruits of his labour and pursue other personal projects. His stepson and winemaker Hamish Maguire has taken on the additional role of managing the estate. The vineyards are tended to by viticulturist Jodie Armstrong.

Shottesbrooke Estate Series Cabernet Sauvignon, McLaren Vale, 2011 Fully ripe Cabernet Sauvignon grapes produced by the old Reynella Selection clone were picked despite a cool and wet season in 2011. While the wine is a little withdrawn and inexpressive at the time of tasting, it is concentrated with good weight on the palate; juicy fruit flavours end with bitter cherry and chocolate. After picking the grapes were fermented with selected yeast to naturally enhance the intensity of flavour, and part-aged in French oak barrels. The 2011 will benefit from bottle age prior to drinking.

Shottesbrooke Estate Series Merlot, McLaren Vale, 2012 The 2012 Shottesbrooke Merlot is approachable now although it has the capacity to be cellared and will become more expressive. Typically Merlot, it has a soft, sweet palate with chocolate spice, earthy flavours, and a lingering bitter cherry finish. Fermentation was carried out by natural wild yeast over a nine day period. The wine was subsequently aged in three to four year old hogsheads for approximately 11 months to add complexity.

McLaren Vale is famous for Shiraz. Situated by the Gulf St Vincent which lies to the west and rises east up to the Mount Lofty ranges, the Shottesbrooke vineyards are located on the upper slopes of the region. This Shiraz from the Blewitt Springs sub-region is part of the Scarce Earth project and is grown on a north-facing slope opposite Bakers Gully. This sub-region is the furthest from the sea and some of the highest vineyards. The soil is deep sand over clay. It is full of intense, ripe, cooked forest fruits. Soft, rich and juicy with firm acidity, it has a bitter cherry finish. Moreish already, it will benefit from further time in bottle. The wine was fermented at 22°C and was matured in French and American oak for 12 months.

The Proprietor is only produced in years of exceptional quality. It is a blend of three noble varieties which complement each other perfectly. The 2010 is starting to show interesting tertiary characteristics. Herbal leafy and truffle aromas on the nose lead to a medium-bodied wine, succulent with ripe fruits and some grip. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are grown on the Reynella Selection clone on alluvial river flats while the Merlot and Malbec vines are planted on deep sandy loam soils. 2010 was a great growing season resulting in intense wines with ageing potential. Each variety was harvested when ripe and fermented separately. Subsequently, the parcels were blended and aged for 18 months in a variety of old and new American and French hogsheads.

Fat’n Skinny Picker’s Choice, McLaren Vale, 2012 Delicious dark forest fruit, brambly aromas make this wine attractive for immediate drinking. The mellow palate, concentration and fine tannins will also allow it to be cellared. Produced from a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Barbera, and a touch of Viognier, the result is early drinking appeal. American oak was predominantly used to mature the wine with 10% new oak from a range of coopers building complexity.

Hastwell & Lightfoot Chardonnay, McLaren Vale, 2013 The Chardonnay used to produce this wine came from vines planted in 1988, sited on the north side of the McLaren Vale hills on sand 350 to 600mm deep over clay. An approachable, appealing, and elegant style, there are flavours of peaches, pears, limes, and banana. The grapes were picked on February 20th and half the wine fermented in new oak.

Hastwell & Lightfoot Cabernet Sauvignon, McLaren Vale, 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon from a four acre block of old vines has been blended with 9% Cabernet Franc. The result is a wine with intense cherry fruits, menthol and herbs. Rich and concentrated on the palate it has a fine tannin structure and long floral flavour. Despite the difficult growing season in 2011, James Hastwell has made a great wine. Picked on April 6th, the grapes were fermented in small open top fermenters and skins subsequently basket-pressed. A range of different oaks and levels of toasting were used to add complexity without overly dominating the wine.

Hastwell & Lightfoot Scare Earth Shiraz, Single Block, McLaren Vale, 2011 McLaren Vale has a wide variety of soil types. The Scarce Earth project was set up some years ago to explore the influence of different geologies and climate on the flavour of wine. The wines must come from a single block and are assessed by an independent panel as a reflection of their terroir rather than winemaking influences. (For more information www.mclarenvale.info/scarceearth). The Hastwell & Lightfoot Scarce Earth Shiraz comes from a block of 17 year old vines planted on a low nutrient, deep sand hillside. The wine is dense and concentrated; a little mute currently, it will develop over the coming years. Fermented in small open top fermenters with extended time on skins, the wine was aged for 18 months in a mix of American and French oak.

GMH Chardonnay, Limestone Coast, 2012 Made from Chardonnay grown at the Wirrega Vineyard in the Bordertown region of the Limestone Coast, 2012 was ideal for Chardonnay in this area; cool nights ensured good acidity and flavour development. The wine has a spicy toast nose with flavours of almonds and fresh lemons. The grapes were slowly fermented at low temperature with 20% of the wine matured in old oak casks. As its name suggests, Bordertown lies close to the state boundary between South Australia and Victoria. Lying north of the Limestone Coast zone and inland, it is the warmest region with the lowest annual rainfall.

GMH Sauvignon Blanc, Adelaide, 2013 Produced from predominantly Adelaide Hills fruit with McLaren Vale, the majority comes from the K1 Vineyard and a block planted in 1987. The remaining 20% comes from one of the oldest blocks of Sauvignon Blanc, certainly in Australia and possibly in the world. It was planted over 100 years ago by Geoff’s great-grandfather Thomas Hardy and is today owned and managed by his cousin Helen. Pale in colour, the wine has all the hallmarks of the Sauvignon Blanc grape with lime and leafy aromas, herbal flavours and a steely mineral finish.

GMH Cabernet Sauvignon, South Australia, 2011 Defined by its herbal green pepper and cherry fruit aromas, there is no mistaking this is a Cabernet Sauvignon grown in a cool region, at Geoff’s K1 Vineyard at Kuitpo, south of the Adelaide Hills. GMH Shiraz, South Australia, 2012 This wine is 100% Shiraz grown at the Wirrega Vineyard north west of Bordertown in the Limestone Coast. 160ha of vines were planted at Wirrega in 1993 and, with twenty years of age, are producing concentrated quality grapes. The 2012 Shiraz is a deep purple colour. Smoky black cherry, olives and floral aromas are present leading to a concentrated wine with fine texture and great balance on the palate. Scrumptious now, it will continue to develop over three to four years. The fresh acidity and subtle oak enhance the wine’s complexity.

K1 by Geoff Hardy Sauvignon Blanc, Adelaide Hills, 2013 Conditions during the 2013 growing season were perfect for Sauvignon Blanc in the southern Adelaide Hills. The weather during flowering and fruit set was temperate. With low rainfall and no excessive temperatures later in the season, the grapes were picked on March 5th. This is a very elegant and accessible style of Sauvignon Blanc. Restrained with ripe fruit flavours, gooseberry, orange blossom and a hint of lychee, it has great depth.

Aromas of wild fruits, strawberries, plums and earthy undergrowth lead to a soft, juicy palate with hints of clove and star anise. For anyone wanting to compare and contrast Aussie Pinot Noir with New Zealand Pinot Noir, this is a great indication of the style to compare with Manuka Hill. Three Pinot Noir clones are planted at the K1 vineyard producing low yields. The vines are pruned to arched canes to allow extra sunlight to fall onto the fruit. The grapes were hand-picked mid-March, fermented and subsequently aged in 100% French oak barrels, 30% new.

K1 by Geoff Hardy Tzimmukin, Adelaide Hills, 2009

Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon

This special wine is a sort of Aussie version of Amarone. Tzimmukin relates back to biblical times when a certain style of wine was made using slightly dried grapes to increase strength and longevity. Low rainfall produced low yields of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes which were hand-picked into baskets late in the season, at the end of April. Capturing the ancient technique, these were slowly air-dried for three weeks and subsequently fermented. The 2009 Tzimmukin is full of ripe fruits, raisins and dried fruits. A complex wine with flavours of fruits, nuts, chocolate and raisins, it is perfectly balanced with lively acidity. Matured for 24 months in French oak barrels and American hogsheads, 40% new, it will benefit from a couple more years in cellar before drinking, and will continue to develop.

Pertaringa Moscato, South Australia, 2013

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, Gewürztraminer

Winemaker Shane Harris has made a super elegant, fruity and very drinkable Moscato. Picked in February, the grapes were crushed and the juice fermented to 6,5% alcohol. The fermentation was then arrested leaving residual sweetness perfectly balanced by the acidity. Pale in colour, it has lychees, rose petals and lemon aromas with a fresh spritz on the palate and nice lemon and honeysuckle flavours. And I love Geoff’s idea of serving it with Eggs Benedict for breakfast or any other time of the day for that matter.

Pertaringa “Understudy” Cabernet Petit Verdot, McLaren Vale, 2010 The Pertaringa Understudy is a perfect marriage of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon (old Reynella Selection clone) with 40% Petit Verdot bringing freshness and vitality to the wine. Intense, smoky aromas with savoury marmite notes lead to a rich and concentrated palate with bags of forest fruits, good depth and linear acidity. It will continue to develop and improve with bottle age. Pertaringa was established 30 years ago by Geoff Hardy and Ian Leask. The old vines are now producing super complex fruit. Deep, well-drained soils are enriched from the hills above and the sea breeze from Gulf St. Vincent tempers the heat.

Pertaringa “Two Gentlemen’s” Grenache, McLaren Vale, 2010 The Pertaringa vineyards lie in the foothills behind the town of McLaren Vale after which the region is named. Viticulture in this area owes much to Geoff’s ancestor, Englishman Thomas Hardy, owner of Tintara in the 1880s, and the largest producer in the district. The 2010 Two Gentlemen’s Grenache is an intense wine with spice, red fruits and vanilla. It has a rich, generous palate with fine, elegant structure and medium length. It is named after Geoff Hardy and Ian Leask, original founders of the vineyard at Pertaringa. Produced from 70 and 20 year old vines, the Grenache grapes were treated like Pinot Noir with fermentation in open top fermenters and matured in 20% new and 80% old Burgundian oak.
