Cellar 250 Bordeaux, Bergerac, Beaujolais and Australia

Bordeaux remains by far the largest fine wine producing region in the world. Even so, not everything produced merits acclaim.

Last year, we said goodbye to Château de Sours after many years of working directly with them, because of a change in ownership. The good news is that we continue our relationship with Martin Krajewski and his Clos Cantenac wines from Saint-Émilion. We are also introducing a new producer. The Darriet family are vignerons and owners of several “petits châteaux” in Bordeaux, and have been for over seven generations. The youngest generation, Sandrine and her brother Jean-Christophe, is now at the helm.

France

Fine wines are not confined to Bordeaux, nor are Bordeaux wines everyone’s cup of tea. Alternative styles from Beaujolais, the Mâconnais, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills are also featured in this cellar offering.

Opimian’s Wine Consultant Jane Masters MW, tastes, selects and writes the commentary for each of the wines in the cellar offerings. Her aim is to find exclusive wines around the world that offer great value to Opimian members through regular visits to wine producers and trade shows.

A Master of Wine since 1997 (one of 356 globally), Jane was elected as Chairman of the prestigious Institute of Masters of Wine in September 2016.

Jane trained as a winemaker at the Bordeaux Institut d’Œnologie after a degree in Biological Chemistry and worked for UK retailer Marks & Spencer sourcing and managing the Wine & Drinks Category for 13 years.

The Darriet family have been vine growers and vignerons for eight generations. The family currently manages 68 hectares of vineyards in different appellations and owns seven “petits châteaux”. The estates are managed by siblings Jean-Christophe and Sandrine, with oversight from their older brother Philippe Darriet, Professor of Research at the ISVV, Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences. Philippe was a close collaborator of the late Denis Dubourdieu and his research on the aromas of Sauvignon Blanc has been influential in improving the quality of Sauvignon Blanc wines around the world.

Château Rouquette in Loupiac was purchased by Guy Darriet in 1962. Its history dates to 1740 and a certain M. Rouquette, who built the château on his 52-hectare estate. Vines were already planted at that time and sweet noble late harvest wines were being produced. Today, the estate continues to produce sweet Loupiac wine in addition to dry white, rosé and red.

Philippe Darriet worked closely with the late Professor Denis Dubourdieu. Much of his research has been on the aromatic components of the Sauvignon Blanc grape and has been influential in improving the quality of Sauvignon Blanc wines around the world. He oversees and works closely with his brother Jean-Christophe on the Rouquette wine. The 2016 has typical gooseberry and citrus aromas which lead to a smooth palate, revealing some floral notes which linger on the palate and finish with crisp lime acidity.

Château Rouquette overlooks the town of Cadillac to the southeast of Bordeaux, close to the Garonne River. It is directly across from Sauternes and at a certain point in time its sweet wines were equally revered. A small amount of rosé is produced from old vines planted on gravel soils. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Salmon pink in colour, the 2016 has cassis, red fruits and pear aromas. It is smooth and flavoursome with a refreshingly crisp dry finish. The grapes were harvested and pressed at low pressure under nitrogen to retain fresh fruit flavours. The wine was fermented at low temperature and left on yeast lees for six months before bottling.

A simple, well-made Bordeaux wine with personality, Château de Rouquette 2015 is soft and round on the palate with spicy aromas, followed by bitter and sour cherry flavours. It is well- balanced and mediumbodied. The grapes were fermented in tank and matured for 18 months with no use of oak; a fresh and pure style.

Cuvée du Pavillon 2014 is mellow with aromas of vanilla and old oak, which complement fresh fruit flavours. The wine has a layered texture with good balance and depth.

The grapes for Cuvée du Pavillon came from a six-hectare plot of vines planted a decade ago on gravelly soils, with a south-southwest exposition. After a relatively long maceration on skins with regular pumping over, the wine was matured for 18 months in one-year-old oak barrels.

The Darriet family has owned Château Moutin for over 200 years. It is in the heart of the Graves region, close to the village of Portets.

As the name of the region suggests, the soils are deep and gravelly with sand. The family cultivates three hectares to produce red wine and uses one hectare for white. The 2009 has developed a mellow bouquet with undergrowth, cassis and other dark fruits.

The palate remains youthful and has depth and balance, leading to a lingering red cherry finish. A classy wine for the price, and drinking nicely now, it is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was matured in barrel for two years using 50% new oak.

Clos Cantenac Martin Krajewski and his daughter Charlotte continue to improve quality, grow and invest in Clos Cantenac in Saint-Émilion. Charlotte, based in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, once again returned to Clos Cantenac to work the harvest in 2016. Martin has also purchased an estate in Pomerol, but it will take some time before we see the fruits of his labour.

He’s also got a great project in South Africa, which I cannot wait to taste!

Last year was the inaugural year for Martin and Lolly’s rosé l’Exuberance, the first rosé ever to be produced by a Saint-Émilion property. L’Exuberance has been a roaring success in markets around the world, selling out quickly. Once again, only a small amount was produced in 2016 and Martin has set aside some cases for Opimian members. Pale pink in colour, it has immediately appealing fruit and yeasty aromas. It is a subtle, yet complex wine, light to medium-bodied with flavours of fresh apples, spicy bananas and red cherries. A kiss of vanilla adds complexity rather than distinct oaky character; half the wine was fermented in oak with just 15% new barrels, the other half in tank. The dimpled bottle looks really smart too!

Clos Cantenac 2015 is a dense, moody wine with aromas of dark fruits, spice, ginger and ripe black cherries.

On the palate, it is concentrated, rich and structured, produced from 100% old vine Merlot. This is a dense wine with flavours of bitter chocolate and a slightly chalky texture. The two blocks of Merlot were picked by hand on September 15th and 24th, 2015. The grapes underwent a cold maceration for eight days followed by fermentation at 25°C over five days with regular pumping over. The wine was transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation and aged in 40% new French oak and 60% second year oak for 14 months.

Petit Cantenac is produced from old vine Merlot blended with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, producing a slightly more linear structure and a less plump style with great poise. I love the Petit Cantenac and given the relative price in comparison to the Grand Vin and the fact that it will be ready for drinking slightly earlier (although it also has a lot of aging potential), I highly recommend it. It has mellow dark fruit and smoky aromas. The palate is soft at the beginning, developing firm acidity with flavours of sour blackberries and cherries. The succulent fruits are complemented with a savoury edge producing a rich and complex wine. A similar winemaking process as for the Grand Vin, the later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were picked up to October 5th, 2015.

Pale in colour with mineral and grapefruit aromas, Château Haut Maginet Blanc 2016 is smooth and dry. It is medium-bodied with fresh fruit flavours and a steely finish. The vines are cultivated on limestone soils and are an average of 20 years of age.

The Jolivet family has built up the vineyard over the years and currently dedicates four hectares to the production of rosé wine.

Produced from a 50:50 blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 rosé is a very pale baby pink colour. Aromas of sherbet and fresh red apples lead to a light, dry palate with nice red fruit flavours and a crisp finish.

Château Haut Maginet lies in the heart of the Entre-deux-Mers region in the small village of Soussac. Soussac sits on the slope of the Butte de Launay, said to be the highest point in the Gironde département.

Jean-Marc Jolivet and his wife Catherine produce simple, easy-drinking Bordeaux wines. The Château Haut Maginet Rouge 2016 has sweet plummy fruits with aromas of crushed blackberries and raspberries. The wine is soft and medium-bodied with a sour blackberry finish.

Jean-Marie Constans and his wife Claudette farm 46 hectares of vines at Saint-Martial.

The estate has been in Jean-Marie’s family for generations. Jean-Marie tends to the vines, while Claudette has made the wine in their modest winery for many years, and is now in the process of handing over that responsibility to her son. Her 2015 is a medium-bodied wine, soft with flavours of spices, red fruits and chocolate. It is simple, well-made Claret.

I tend to steer clear of the 2011 vintage in Bordeaux, not because the wines are faulty, but they do tend to be a bit lighter in structure with less potential to age. Having said that, Château Carignan 2011 is a big wine with intense flavours. Starting with aromas of coffee and undergrowth, the palate is concentrated with a rich mid-palate.

This wine is full and round with supple and silky tannins. The estate at Cadillac consists of 65 hectares on gravelly clay and limestone soils. Showing some nice development, it is ready for drinking and will remain at its peak over the next three to five years.

Château La Brande is located close to SaintÉtienne-de-Lisse in the Côtes de Castillon, east of Saint-Émilion.

The 2014 has a smoky aroma sitting over a dark fruit background.

The palate is firm with good weight, concentration and depth. Vines are planted on 16 hectares of clay limestone and molasse du Fronsadais soil. A blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, it is medium to fullbodied with some potential for keeping. It was matured in oak with one third new for 10 to 12 months.

The historic Château Siaurac is set in the middle of a beautiful park. The 46-hectare estate is the largest in the Lalande de Pomerol appellation and is one to watch for the future. Run by Paul Goldschmidt, it has benefited from an injection of cash from Château Latour owner François Pinault in 2014, which has given Paul the scope to push boundaries. Baronne de Siaurac 2014 has smoky dark fruits; it is concentrated with a fine texture and is well-balanced.

Roudier is in the satellite appellation of Montagne-Saint-Émilion, to the north of Saint-Émilion. The 42-hectare estate has 30 hectares of vines on the southern slope of Saint-Georges -Montagne. The 2012 has a spicy oak nose; it was matured for 15 to 18 months in barrel with one third new oak. On the palate, it is concentrated with good weight and a supple, round structure.

Flavours of dark berry fruits and smoke emerge and linger, combining with a heavy dose of tannin. This is a wine that will benefit from more time in bottle for the oak to integrate.

Château Ripeau was purchased by Cyrille and Nicolas Grégoire in January 2015.

While the property is a work in progress to transform and make their dreams come true, they already consider it as the jewel in the crown. The vineyard covers a single plot of 16.1 hectares within a stone’s throw of Cheval Blanc and Figeac, and has a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc.

Somewhat of a sleeping beauty, the estate is noted in documents from 1785 and it has been classified as Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé since 1955, the year in which the first classification was introduced. While the Grégoires did not make the 2013 vintage, they blended the wine, including this second wine. In L’Ange de Ripeau, they have created a wine with intense vanilla, cooked fruits, and dark berry aromas. It is concentrated with youthful flavours and a sour blackcurrant, grippy finish that will evolve.

Château Villemaurine, on the eastern outskirts of Saint-Émilion, has a total of 12 hectares of vines cultivated in the heart of the limestone plateau. Les Angelots, the second wine, is produced from 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The grapes for Les Angelots come from slightly different plots grown on clay

limestone soils, but the same care and attention is taken as for the Grand Vin. Les Angelots 2012 was matured using 30% new barrels and 70% second fill, and is currently showing lots of oak with cedar and coffee.

This should integrate over time. On the palate, it has good mid-palate fruit with a grippy tannin finish and a flavour of bitter chocolate. Owner Justin Onclin, a Belgian, purchased the estate in 2007 and has poured time and money on renovating it and employing the best consultants.

Last year Opimian offered two wines produced from Bruno Segond. This year, his 2015 Château Haut Grignon stood out in the line-up of Médoc wines tasted. Château Haut Grignon lies in the far north of the Médoc at Valeyrac. The estate has 11 hectares of vines and is classified as Cru Bourgeois. This is a concentrated wine, deep in colour with aromas of dark fruits, smoke and a touch of oak. The palate has a silty structure, with bitter cherry flavours and firm tannins giving it a chewy finish.

Clos des Demoiselles is a tiny property with just 2.4 hectares of old vines in the appellation of Listrac. The old vines were in the same family from 1820 until the property was purchased by Jean and Marie-Hélène Chanfreau in 2002.

The Chanfreau produce concentrated ripe wines from a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Vines are cultivated on the gravelly soils on the south slope of Puy de Menjon, the highest point in the Médoc. The grapes are all handpicked and fermented in small vats at moderate temperature. The wine is transferred and matured in barrels on fine lees, with 40% new, for 14 months.

The 2014 is less concentrated than 2012, but well-balanced. It has musky notes, spices and fruit finishing on bitter cherry notes.

The 2015 vintage produced some delicious, sweet, food-friendly wines in Sauternes.

Following on from the 2014 vintage which was also good, the 2015 is generally slightly deeper in colour and a little spicier. As usual the Lamothe family have demonstrated their art in making fine Sauternes. Bright yellow in colour, Château Fontebride 2015 has elegant aromas of vanilla cream and apricot. The palate is rich and succulent with perfect acidity to balance the sweetness. It has lots of fruit and barley sugar with a fine textured palate, some complexity, and a bitter marmalade finish.

Vieux Clos Saint-Émilion vineyards lie to the west of the plateau of Saint-Émilion, several hundred metres from the medieval town. Michel Terras’ main business is a nursery that supplies vines to vineyards throughout the Bordeaux region. His own estate, Château Vieux Clos St Émilion, has eight hectares of vines, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec, planted on sandy soils with an average age of 55 years. The wine is fermented in cement tanks with four weeks maceration and is subsequently aged in oak using 50% new barrels for 14 months. The wines produced are traditional in style with an herbal character from the Cabernet Franc shining through.

As the purchase price of land rose in right bank appellations such as Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, wine producers started expanding their focus and exploring neighbouring appellations in which to invest. Regions such as Côtes de Castillon and Fronsac have seen their wines improve, as the owners bring expertize, resources and focus on quality. One such owner, Denis Durantou of l’Église Clinet in Pomerol, as well as properties in Saint-Émilion and Lalande de Pomerol, purchased Château Montlandrie in the Côtes de Castillon in 2009. Château Montlandrie 2012 has intense aromas of crushed raspberries, tar and dark fruits. The palate is concentrated with firm acidity and tannin supported by succulent mid-palate fruit. This is a wine that punches above its weight and is well worth laying down for some time. Produced from 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, the estate dates to the 1880s with an ancient stone tower located in the middle of the vineyards. It has been revitalized by Denis Durantou and his team.

Hélène de Boüard de Laforest comes from a long-established winemaking family in SaintÉmilion; her ancestors have been making wine in the region since 1762. Her cousin Hubert has made his mark as the seventh generation, managing Château Ausone since 1985, and is an exuberant global wine personality. Hélène is more reserved and understated in nature. Her wines are too; less polished and more traditional. The 5.5 hectares of Château Daugay is a single vineyard plot that lies on the southern and southwestern part of the famous SaintÉmilion slope, just 800 metres from Château Ausone. The name Daugay goes back more than 500 years and comes from the presence of Jay birds called “daou gay” in local patois.

Hélène’s 2014 is restrained with black and red fruit aromas. Medium-bodied, it has flavours of marzipan and bitter cherry. It is elegant in style, yet powerful with complex notes and a long finish. Produced from majority Merlot with 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the grapes were all picked between October 1st and October 8th, 2014. It was matured 35% in new oak barrels, 35% in old oak and 30% in tank and bottled on April 21st, 2016.

Hélène and Frédéric Soual have lovingly restored this estate located halfway between Margaux and Saint-Julien at CussacFort-Médoc. Hélène, whose grandfather bought the house in the 1950s, made it her home in 1996 and she makes the wines. Her 2014 has spicy, cedar aromas. It is mediumbodied with sweet fruits and tobacco flavours leading to a firm finish with notes of liquorice and spicy oak. After a long fermentation and maceration on skins, Hélène aged the wine for 10 months, half in barrel, half in tank.

Situated in the far north of the Médoc at Saint-ChristolyMédoc, Château Tour St. Bonnet has 40 hectares of vineyards well-situated on a gravel ridge close to the Gironde estuary.

Jacques Merlet makes traditional style wines with less use of oak, maturing his wines in large old oak foudres rather than new barrels. The 2009 has a smoky, blackcurrant aroma with savoury marmite notes. It is still youthful. Mediumbodied with lots of appealing fruit, it is drinking well now and for several years.

The 2014 is dense in colour with ripe black cherry fruits and sweet vanilla aromas. This is a succulent wine with good mid-palate fruit and concentration. It has a fine texture, with juicy vibrant fruit leading to a bitter cherry and

redcurrant finish with firm structure. The 17 hectares of Château Pibran vines sit on the same plateau behind the town of Pauillac as Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Pontet-Canet. They are tended to by JeanRené Matignon and the team from Château Pichon Baron with the same obsessive attention to detail. A hailstorm at the end of July meant extra severe selection of grapes at picking and a much higher proportion of Merlot in the final blend than previous years; 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was matured in 50% new oak and 50% one year old oak barrels.

A rich, dense and concentrated wine, this is textbook stuff from the Médoc, and worth waiting for. Phélan Ségur comprises 66 hectares of vineyards close to the Gironde estuary on well-drained gravelly soils.

The vineyards are surrounded by those of Château Montrose and Château Calon Ségur, and despite its classification as Cru Bourgeois, it is as good as, if not better than, many classed growths in the vicinity. The 2014 deserves cellaring although it already has lots of appeal; ripe forest fruits, vanilla with delicious depth and complexity. The fruit and the oak are well-integrated and lead to a concentrated palate with a grainy texture of firm, but ripe tannins. This is a wine with great balance. A blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Merlot, it was matured in lightly toasted oak barrels for 18 months.

Clos Marsalette is part-owned by Stephan von Neipperg, owner of Château Canon La Gaffelière and La Mondotte in Saint-Émilion.

Neipperg is generally recognized as a driving force behind the rise in right bank wine quality over the last 20 years. This is his foray across the river. Like many estates in the Left Bank Pessac-Léognan appellation, Clos Marsalette produces both red and white wines, although the majority of the production at the 6.3-hectare estate is red. The vines have an average age of 16 years and the younger blocks are planted at high density. A rich and concentrated wine, it has ripe fruit aromas with red berries, red and black cherries, some floral notes and a kiss of vanilla. The smooth palate has a slightly earthy taste combined with a silky texture, leading to a grainy finish with lingering flavours of red and bitter cherries. A blend of 60% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, it was aged in barrel, 40% new.

Olivier Bernard is renowned in the world of wine for Domaine de Chevalier. In 1993 he started managing the 32-hectare vineyard that is Domaine de la Solitude on behalf of the Communauté Religieuse de la SainteFamille, which has owned the estate since 1854. Olivier’s team, who makes Domaine de Chevalier, also tends the vines and makes the wine at Domaine de la Solitude, and it shows! Just seven hectares are dedicated to making white wine. The 2015 is pale in colour and understated in aroma with citrus and white fruit notes. On the palate, the wine has a layered creamy texture. It is elegant, mediumbodied, fresh and crisp. The grapes were selectively handpicked, gently pressed and slowly fermented in barrel and the wine aged on lees for seven to ten months.

Château Les Tuileries is owned and managed by the team at Château Roquefort at Lugasson in the heart of the Entredeux-Mers region. Eight hectares are planted, the majority to Merlot, with an average vine age of 25 years. The 2014 is starting to drink well with some potential for further aging. It is firm and concentrated with good mid-palate weight, and dark fruit and blackberry flavours.

Winemaker Sam Mestre makes powerful red wines which are tight-knit and firm in youth, reflecting the limestone plateau on which the vineyards are cultivated. Château Roquefort 2015 has aromas of ripe dark fruits and cassis. The palate is structured with a firm mineral finish and seems more Cabernet Sauvignon in nature, although it is in fact 90% Merlot. The grapes were picked by hand and underwent a cold soak prior to fermentation. The wine was matured for 12 months in oak.

Château Meillac stands at the entrance to the small town of Saint-Romainla-Virvée in the Fronsac region, on the right bank of the Dordogne River.

The town sits on a hill, its 12th century church overlooking the vineyard slopes. Owned by the Serisier family, Château Meillac also has a 17th century windmill. The family has an interesting history in wine. Originally from Bordeaux, Jean-Émile Serisier went to Australia in 1839. He established a vineyard and winery known as Eumalga, producing around 1,000,000 litres of wine and winning many awards in the 19th century. Excerpts from the local news reports of the day make fascinating reading. Richard Serisier moved to France with his family in the early 2000s and they have been making wine in Fronsac since 2012. Château Meillac 2012 is restrained with coffee notes and a soft plummy attack with bitter cherry flavours. It is medium-bodied with some chewy tannins on the finish.

A vintage that is often overlooked, the 2007 Bordeaux wines have matured nicely and are drinking well. Château d’Escurac has a developed brick ruby colour and an intense, complex savoury bouquet. It is on the lighter side of medium-bodied with lots of delicious spicy and meaty flavours. Perfectly ready for drinking, it should remain at its peak for several years. The estate at Civrac, at the northern end of the Médoc, consists of 22 hectares planted in equal proportions with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The vineyards sit on a gravelly slope next to a pretty 11th century chapel; the second wine is called La Chapelle d’Escurac.

Owner Jean-Marc Landureau inherited the property in 1990. It was his grandfather who purchased the historic estate in 1934 and used it to breed horses.

A very special wine created by Ludovic David exclusively for Wine & Co. Ludovic is the man responsible for turning around the fortunes and reputation of Marquis de Terme. The fourth growth Grand Cru estate has been owned by the Sénéclauze family since 1935.

Situated on the outskirts of the village of Margaux, it had over the years become lost in time until Ludovic’s arrival in 2008. Ludovic and his oenologist Julien Viaud reorganized all winery and vineyard practices. Vineyards were uprooted and re-planted where necessary. Attention was paid to the typical Margaux soils and there was a move to organic viticulture. Cuvée 9 is a special wine created for the first time in 2012. It is intense and complex. The name is a play on words,

neuf, meaning nine and new in French. Quoi de neuf – what’s new? What’s new is that the wine is fermented in barrel and aged in concrete egg-shaped tanks. It is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon from the best parcels located on the north plateau of Margaux. The grapes were picked by hand and directly put into barrel for fermentation and maceration on skins for two months. The wine was subsequently aged in 600-litrer concrete eggs for another year. The result is a 2014 with complex aromas of ginger, spice, liquorice, treacle, herbs and bitter cherry. The palate is voluptuous and concentrated with a grippy finish and bright acidity. A collector’s wine, just 1800 bottles of Cuvée 9 were produced in 2014, each is numbered.

Château Pique-Sègue, located to the north of SainteFoy-la-Grande, on the right bank of the Dordogne River, is close to the boundary with the Gironde department. It grows the same grape varieties as Bordeaux on 60 hectares and produces a range of dry and sweet wines in all three colours.

This rosé wine, made from Cabernet Sauvignon, is salmon pink in colour with fresh apple fruit and earthy aromas. The palate is broad with steely acidity and a crisp finish. Part of the grapes was pressed immediately; part was left for the skins to macerate, giving it the salmon hue. The juice was fermented at low temperature and bottled early.

Bergerac lies east of the Bordeaux region further away from the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, hence its climate is more extreme. Château Pique-Sègue enjoys an exceptional location with white limestone clay soils rich in tuff.

Château Pique-Sègue red 2015 is intense in colour, but a bit more reserved in aroma. It has berry fruits, earth and a touch of coal.

The palate is soft with good mid-palate fruit and a juicy finish.

The top cuvée produced at Château PiqueSègue, Terre de Pique-Sègue Anima Vitis is primarily made from Merlot with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. 2011 is generally a lighter year in Bordeaux, but at Pique-Sègue it has produced a vibrant and concentrated wine. The 2011 is still youthful on the nose with aromas of fresh plums, blackcurrants and vanilla. It was matured in new French oak barrels for 15 months. It is lively on the palate with juicy fruit leading to firm acidity and a bitter cherry finish.

Bernard Perrin Bernard and Blandine Perrin live just outside the village of Ternand in Beaujolais, surrounded by their vineyards. For them 2016 was a nail-biting year which fortunately ended well. A wet spring and violent storms across the region did not bode well, however hot and dry weather during the summer months with just a small amount of rain in early September produced a fine crop and good quality wines. Bernard believes Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, had something to do with it.

Named after the mulberry trees that grow around the edges of the vineyard, Le Mûrier 2016 is aromatic with intense red berry fruits and a touch of earth. It is soft with good weight and has a succulent mid-palate with good concentration. The vines are planted on granitic schist soils with a south, southeast exposition.

As the name suggest, Cuvée Vigne Centenaire is produced from grapes grown on vines over one hundred years old. These are some of the first vines planted using grafted rootstock to overcome the Phylloxera plague. These old vines produce low yields of concentrated grapes, giving wines of structure and depth. The 2015 has aromas of white pepper, spice and earth, laid over a dark fruit background. The palate is structured and firm with flavours of violets and black fruit.

Thomas Patenôtre and his wife Estelle have been running the family estate since 1996.

It was originally created by Thomas’s great great grandfather. Moulin-à-Vent produces some of the most structured, longest lived wines of the Beaujolais crus. The 2014 shows some colour development. It has intense oak aromas, vanilla and red fruit. It is medium-bodied with a lingering vanilla finish. Vines are cultivated on sandy granite soils with veins of manganese rich minerals.

The grapes were picked mid-September after a damp spring and dry summer. After fermentation in concrete tanks, the wine was aged in large old oak vats and barrels.

Frédéric Montageron runs the nine-hectare estate that has vineyards in Fleurie as well as Morgon. The oaked cuvée was aged for 12 months in barrel and is heavily marked by it.

The palate is concentrated and rich, but will benefit from some time in bottle for the oak to fully integrate. The grapes were harvested early and fully ripe due to the hot recordbreaking summer temperatures.

Jacques Charlet The Charlet family have been landowners and wine merchants in Beaujolais and the Mâconnais since the 18th century. In 1754, their wines were already held in high esteem in Paris. One of their customers was the first architect to King Louis XVI, working on the magnificent Palace of Versailles. Today, the family continues to own several estates with wines produced under the supervision of chief winemaker Jean-Pierre Rodet.

The wines are made by Régis Thévenet. The vines face east on silty clay soils. A smooth, structured Saint-Véran with aromas of lemon and apple, and a creamy texture, Château Préty is situated at SaintVéran, one of the most southern villages in the Mâconnais. The vines are 40 years old and cultivated on clay limestone soils facing east and southeast at an average altitude of 260 metres. This family domaine was established in 1850. Wines are currently made by Philippe Curial. Showing nicely now, this wine has good depth and the potential for cellaring for several years. It will become more honeyed and nutty with time.

Domaine des Sansonnets is situated in the middle of the village of Pouilly, in a 19thcentury country house. Its wine, produced from just three hectares of 30 to 60-year-old vines on hillside slopes, has delicious fruit and vanilla notes. It is a succulent wine, with mellow body, warm ripe fruit and roasted almond flavours. It is elegant, yet rich and complex with great length. The grapes were handpicked from the east-facing slopes, immediately pressed and the juice left to settle. After racking, the juice was fermented in tank and partially matured in oak barrels with regular stirring of the lees.

Sew & Sew Wines Jodie Armstrong is a consultant viticulturist by day to many growers and winemakers. Sew & Sew Wines is her own project to produce handcrafted wines. Jodie believes that vineyards create their own patterns; whether it be from sun, water, soil structure or insect behaviour. Predicting and embracing these patterns allows for high-quality, balanced fruit, and the production of memorable wines. She’s also a keen sewer, hence the name.

The cool climate of Adelaide Hills in South Australia produces Chardonnay wines more akin to those from Europe, particularly those from Burgundy. Jodie selects parcels of fruit to suit the season, reflect the vintage and allow the terroir to shine through the wine. The grapes for Sashiko Chardonnay were harvested on March 3rd, 2016 in the cool early morning and delivered to the winery at 6 a.m. for immediate pressing. 30% of the juice was matured in old oak. The wine was left on lees for eight months.

The best of McLaren Vale Shiraz and the antithesis of red Bordeaux, this is a big wine, deep in colour, intensely flavoured and richly concentrated. Aromas of dark berry fruits, chocolate and smoky bacon exude from it.

The palate is fleshy and powerful with both a fruit and a savoury twist. 2015 was a great year in McLaren Vale. Jodie Armstrong uses minimal interference in her winemaking. The grapes were picked by hand, crushed and fermented in small open-fermenters. The ferment was hand-plunged twice daily. The wine was matured for 11 months in oak, 20% new American oak hogsheads and 80% older French and American barrels.

Despite being fermented and aged in oak for eight months, this is not an intensely oaked wine. It shows rather more citrus lemon and lime flavours than rich vanilla and wood. It opens in the glass to reveal a purity of fruit with a creamy texture and persistent finish with flavours of peach, stone fruits and almonds. 40% was aged in new oak and 60% in one to threeyear-old barrels.

Produced from a blend of three distinct clones of Pinot Noir, each is picked and matured separately, allowing Jodie to follow the development of the respective clones over 18 months. The three plots were harvested on March 1st, 6th and 9th, 2015.

Medium brick ruby in colour, the 2015 has wild strawberry and cherry pie notes and is medium-bodied with some savoury tannins on the finish. The grapes were destemmed and fermented in small open-fermenters, initially plunging the skins twice daily.

Towards the end of the fermentation, it is foot-stomped by “dancing girls” until fully dry. It was matured in 20% new oak and 80% old French barrels.
