BORDEAUX, BEAUJOLAIS, SAVOIE & AUSTRIA

ORDER APR 30 - JUN 2, 2025
Savoie is an alpine corner of eastern France near the border with Switzerland and more a smattering of isolated sub-regions and vineyards than a contiguous wine region. It is responsible for less than one per cent of France’s total wine output: notably, as much as 70% of its production is whites –based on a cluster of local grapes –not easily found elsewhere. Despite the location, the cooling effect of the Alps and its higher elevation, Savoie enjoys growing seasons which combine just enough warmth and optimal exposure to result in fresh wines with a moderate alcohol and a bright but not harsh acidity.

EARL MILLION ROUSSEAU JACQUÈRE CRU JONGIEUX AND ROUSSETTE DE SAVOIE CASE: 3 BOTTLES EACH:
$ 37 $ 222
This case features two native grapes that are the epitome of what the region is all about: freshness and delicacy with a subtle delivery. Jacquère is planted over 50% of the region’s surface and makes an attractive, easy-going, early-drinking wine. Altesse (also known as Roussette) is clearly very capable of making a wine that is enjoyable early but has a bonus of being able to develop some additional facets with a couple of years in cellar. It is hard to argue against opening them side by side to compare and contrast the two signature Savoie white grapes.

EARL MILLION ROUSSEAU GAMAY DE SAVOIE, CRU JONGIEUX AND MONDEUSE DE SAVOIE CASE: 3 BOTTLES EACH:
$ 35 $ 210
Freshness in the glass: this pair speaks to their provenance with fresher fruit and lighter weight, and they represent their region well. Gamay does quite well here and vinified in a traditional red-wine manner offers a different expression than the one it is known for at home in Beaujolais. Mondeuse is an ancient and native cultivar, known in pre-Roman times, and supremely adapted to its environs. While enjoyable young, it has been known to develop nicely in bottle over a few years.

Austria, in the heart of central Europe, boasts a rich winemaking tradition shaped by its diverse soils and climates. The abundant sunshine, moderate climate and loess, gravel, and limestone soils of lower Austria and Vienna are perfect for Grüner Veltliner (nearly a third of Austrian plantings), Riesling and Pinot Blanc. The warmer Burgenland region, with its clay and slate soils, is prized for its more concentrated whites, bold reds and exquisite botrytized sweet wines. This is where we find Jost Höpler: for over 25 years, the estate has crafted highly complex and expressive dry whites, fruity rosés and distinguished reds.
Höpler, a family-owned winery since the 1860s, is situated on the northwest shore of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, Austria. Under the stewardship of Christof Höpler, who succeeded his father Jost in 2007, the estate cultivates 50 hectares of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt vineyards. The estate is sustainably certified with a state-of-the-art winery powered by solar energy.

Grüner Veltliner
36 $ 216
A medium-bodied Grüner Veltliner with a pleasing, subtly chalky texture. Intense floral, citrus and peppery notes on the nose. The palate is equally lively and brightfruited with lingering savoury and saline hints. Zippy, high acidity adds freshness and energy. A fantastic white with plenty of punch and precision. 2025-2030 –jb
5505 HÖPLER ROSÉ CÉLESTIA, BURGENLAND, 2024
Pinot Noir, St Laurent, Blaufränkisch
The Austrian red wine grape Blaufränkisch is known for its bold, spicy, tangy fruited character: these traits make for a delicious rosé with a little more body and oomph than a classic Provençal style. Pale salmon in colour, this is a medium-bodied, unoaked rosé with a smooth, rounded palate brimming with raspberry almond-cream flavours underscored with citrus and herbal nuances. 2025-2027–jb
5506 K7 CUVÉE, QUALITÄTSWEIN, BURGENLAND, 2022
Blaufränkisch, Syrah, Merlot
A full-bodied blend of Blaufränkisch, Syrah and Merlot, this red boasts a plush, supple texture with lots of depth. Firm, finegrained tannins frame the finish. 2025-2032–jb

By Michael Palij MW
Most Bordeaux wines exist outside the en primeur spotlight and face a tough market. According to wine writer Andrew Jefford, some struggle with a reputation for green tannins and lean fruit, though this isn’t always deserved. Meanwhile, lower production costs in Chile and Argentina make their wines appealing alternatives. This shifting demand has pushed Bordeaux to refine its offerings, eliminating mediocrity and driving producers to improve quality to stay competitive.
Bordeaux’s style is evolving. Harvests in Saint-Émilion now happen weeks earlier than a century ago, according to vine expert Cornelis van Leeuwen and wine scientist Philippe Darriet at the University of Bordeaux. Recent years have seen extreme humidity and temperature fluctuations, adding complexity to winemaking decisions.
The 2023 vintage, the third warmest since 1990, saw early budbreak (late March). Though downy mildew was a risk, it wasn’t especially wet. However, May and June brought bouts of rain and high temperatures, causing rampant humidity that reduced yields in Moulis and Listrac to a seven-year low. Elsewhere, Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac, and Saint-Julien reported their best crops in a decade, while Pomerol, Saint-Émilion, and Sauternes performed well.
Bordeaux is facing challenges. Prices are down, and the en primeur system has left collectors nursing losses. Yet, Bordeaux remains the most traded wine by value on Liv-ex, the global marketplace for fine wine trading, often capturing over 40% of the market. While some vintages are old gems, many newer ones are actively changing hands. The takeaway: Bordeaux is still delicious, remains popular, but is no longer the foolproof investment it once was. As a result, it offers better value than ever before.
The white grape harvest began in mid-August after a warm spell, with reds following on September 5. Those who waited until early October benefited from late-season warmth. Bordeaux expert Jane Anson describes 2023 as a vintage with "good tannic potential but not as powerful as recent years, with strong aromatic intensity." Winemaker and writer Gavin Quinney notes the wines "will show fruit and finesse over structure and power." Expect fresh, energetic dry whites and reds favoring Cabernet Sauvignon (Pauillac) and Pomerol. Sauternes appears more ageworthy than 2022.
If 2023 was humid, 2024 was outright wet—the wettest in 30 years. Early budbreak from a warm spell brought the double threat of frost and mildew. Conditions improved slightly in late May and August, but September rains complicated harvest. Cooler temperatures at harvest added further challenges. Still, there’s reason for optimism. Jane Anson highlights "lower alcohol levels and higher acidities than in recent vintages" with "beautiful aromatics from the best locations." The wines will be lean and fragrant, with whites drinking well young and reds benefiting from short aging. Estates that adapted well will shine, particularly those sourcing from diverse locations. Second wines will be worth exploring. Cabernet Sauvignon from well-drained Left Bank soils and Right Bank wines with a strong Cabernet Franc component should be strong contenders.

Vignobles Darriet do not do Bordeaux like one might think. Sixty per cent of Bordeaux’s vineyards are certified “High Environmental Value,” but – and without hubris – the Darriet family started limiting their use of chemicals in 1950. Their holdings have steadily increased to include six châteaux, all genuinely managed with the same astute husbandry that they practice at DauphinéRondillon – the jewel in the crown of Loupiac’s sweet wines. Jean-Christophe Darriet is the eighthgeneration marketing director and winemaker, seeing the operation right through from growing to bottling to delivering to Opimian Members. His Château Moutin estate, planted to one hectare white and three red, is situated at Portets, equidistant between Léognan and Barsac. Domaine de Roumaud, on the other hand, is made from small parcels at Loupiac.
CHÂTEAU MOUTIN, AOC GRAVES, VIGNOBLES J. DARRIET, 2019
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon
Sémillon
Medium ruby hue. The nose shows wellaligned primary, secondary and tertiary notes of black cherry, damson, vanilla, tobacco, mushroom and cooked plum. The palate opens confidently with ripe, glossy blackberry and dried blueberry plus cedar, mushroom and pencil shavings. Fully mature, the acidity is still lively and the tannins firm but handy. A dash of licorice on the finish rounds off this delicious Graves. 2026-2028 – mp
Medium lemon hue. No mistaking this for anything but Sémillon! There is a luscious nose of candle wax, wet wool, banana skin and musk melon. The palate is equally appetizing offering creamy layers of stone fruit, apple, pear and grape. With moderate acidity and a long, textured finish, this is an accomplished effort – and without an oak stave in sight. 2026-2028 – mp
Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon
Medium lemon hue. This opens with enticing wafts of vanilla kicking off a beguiling mix of banana, blackcurrant leaf, peach, juniper and candle wax. There is a lovely touch of oak on the palate bringing weight and complexity to a core of apricot and passionfruit, peach and banana. The acidity does it justice, leading a mouthwatering finish that bursts with stone fruit. 2026-2028 – mp
Loupiac has ancient traditions: the Romans made wine here, and there is a villa that belonged to the most able of fourth-century Latin poets, Ausonius. The region lies on the opposite bank of the Garonne River to Sauternes, benefiting greatly from the localized morning mists that are so central to the development of noble rot. When it comes to regulations, the minimum must weight that must be reached before harvest is slightly higher than in Sauternes, ensuring that these wines are invariably very sweet. If you enjoy Sauternes (but wince at the price tag), Dauphiné-Rondillon should be of interest: the estate is the cream of Loupiac, and the century-old vines produce outstanding fruit.

CHÂTEAU DE ROUQUETTE CUVÉE DU PAVILLON, AOC LOUPIAC, 2018
Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon
Medium gold. Elegant, stripped-back nose that hints at marzipan, grilled almond and pineapple juice. The succulent, uncluttered palate delivers a hit of tinned peaches, fresh pineapple, marzipan and coconut, all bound by crunchy acidity and rolling nicely towards a lingering finish. 2026-2030 – mp

amber hue. A nose of ripe mango, grilled pineapple, honeycomb and butterscotch leads to a mature palate that offers an amalgam of tropical fruits and candied orange peel with winter spice and mulled wine syrup. This shows off the intensity of the 2022 vintage –finishing sweet by any measure but full of pomp. 2026-2030 – mp
Deep gold hue. A stacked nose showing focussed aromas of ripe apricot, almond, coconut, white pepper, pineapple and caramel. The full-bodied palate unwinds in languorous fashion, steadily increasing its range to include butterscotch, vanilla, apricot, pineapple and almond. There is high acidity and alcohol working together to create a powerful wine and driving towards a rich, satisfying finish. 2026-2032–mp
Creamy risotto with scallops and peas
5493 CHÂTEAU BEAUPORTAIL, AOP PÉCHARMANT, 2020
Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec
$ 38 $ 228
Medium ruby hue. Opens with an exotic nose of cassis, black cherry, undergrowth, white pepper and nutmeg. The palate also makes a splash with healthy dollops of ripe black fruit, kirsch, dark chocolate, nutmeg and clove. This storms the senses but is nevertheless particularly well-balanced, showcasing wellintegrated (if powerful) tannins and plenty of drive. Somewhat predictably, the finish is admirably long. 2026-2028 –mp
Pécha-where? Surely the most hidden of hidden gems, Pécharment (from “pech” meaning hill in Occitan and “armant” meaning charming) is a small region on the outskirts of Bergerac, historically overshadowed by its downstream neighbour, Bordeaux, though capable of producing exquisite wines in its own right. Château Beauportail belongs to Niagara-native Stefan Niedojadlo who turned a dream into reality when he purchased the estate along with his uncle, Jerzy, in 2018. Although his winemaking was previously just a hobby, he works with considerable skill claiming a gold medal for his “Quintessence de Beauportail” at the 2023 London Wine Competition. And we certainly like that they use Canadian oak barrels for maturation!
5494 QUINTESSENCE DE BEAUPORTAIL, AOP PÉCHARMANT, 2020
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec
$ 52 $ 312
Deep ruby hue. Tightly knit, the complex nose of ground coffee, winter spices, blackberry, fresh and cooked cherries, kirsch and prune signals a certain élan. This has an extra gear again on the palate, offering the very ripest black fruit and Herculean levels of alcohol to match impressive tannins and acidity. There are flavours of fresh plum, blueberry, cooked black fruit, cedar, dark chocolate, licorice and tar, plus excellent concentration. 2026-2028 – mp

From the heart of Entredeux-Mers, an unusual Merlot and Petit Verdot blend. A deep purple, opaque pour. The nose opens with mediumminus intensity elements: creamy, black plum nectar, chocolate, lees, poached red pear and flowers/potpourri. The dry palate follows with a medium-minus acidity, a medium extract, medium fine-textured tannins, a medium body and attractive flavours of black plum nectar, cream, tar, chocolate and lees, closing with a medium finish. 2025-2028 – ir
A classically styled, easydrinking Merlot from Bordeaux with its tangy red and dark fruit flavours underscored by notes of licorice and subtly spiced cedar nuances from extended oak ageing. Very brisk and youthful at present with ripe yet firm tannins. Needs a little time to soften.

Duck à l’orange
In Bordeaux, the Sauvignon Blanc grape can be made in a light, crisp, unoaked manner and also in a richer, more concentrated, oak-aged style. This second type of white Bordeaux is meant for the table with its full body, its creamy texture and lingering toasty, vanilla oak nuances. The “Myosotis” cuvée is a great example balanced by zippy acidity and vibrant fruit. 2027-2037–jb
FUSION, AOC BORDEAUX ROSÉ, ELIZABETH & DAVID LABAT, 2024
Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon
Two Cabs’ blend, with the colour picked up during the pressing, results in a light redplum pink hue. There are medium-intensity dough, lees, wild strawberry and watermelon elements on the nose. The palate is dry, has a low-plus adequate acidity, a medium extract, a soft texture and a medium-plus body with a cushy mouthfeel, lovely length and flavours of lees, watermelon and wild strawberry before a medium finish. 2025-2026 –ir
This kit is a Bordeaux mixed case but without what people usually mean when they mention Bordeaux – a red. However, rosé and white
Bordeaux deserve their share of respect and attention. In the Middle Ages, claret, the name that today became synonymous with the region’s reds, referred to a lighter red or a deeper rosé that the early Bordeaux wine on the English market looked like. And Sauvignon Blanc – usually blended with Sémillon – had been in Bordeaux well before Cabernet Sauvignon took hold: the former grape is, in fact, one of Cab Sauv’s parents. And yes, what a refreshing pair to start an outdoor summer shindig with.

Pale lemon hue. Frank, fresh nose of gooseberry, lime juice, conference pear and blackcurrant leaf. The nose greets with lively, medium-plus intensity aromas of white spice/cardamom, quince, star fruit, tomatillo and tomato leaf, wax, camomile and pickling spice/dill. The palate is a bit more subdued right now: dry, with a medium-minus acidity, a medium extract, a soft texture, a medium body and subtler expressions of star fruit, quince, camomile and dill, with a brief finale. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot
From Margaux district, one of top names in all of Bordeaux and one famed for its elegant wines and the oldest vines of the estate. The winemakers leaned into the delicacy, elegance and pure fruit expression by, unusually, using only amphora to vinify and age the wine. It has a deep ruby, opaque color and mediumintensity aromas of lees, tar, chives and onion tart, red and black plum reduction. The palate is dry with a soft acidity, a medium extract, medium-minus finetextured tannins, a medium body and delicate fruit replays of the aromas – red and black plum, tar, lees, chives – flowing towards a medium finish. 2025-2026 – ir

Who says winemaking excellence knows borders? Cantenac is a family-owned estate shaped by the skill and vision of winemaker Charlotte Krajewski. With deep Anglo-Polish roots, this estate continues to thrive. Krajewski draws on global experience to craft wines that breathe new life into the muchmaligned Merlot grape, proving that Bordeaux’s right bank still has plenty of spark. The project has seen considerable investment – including a new winery and barrel room – which is handsomely paying off. Jane Anson (probably the most authoritative voice on Bordeaux in the English-speaking world) is very complimentary, and Krajewski works hard to make sure each grape is fit for purpose, picking in tries and employing two sorting tables before pressing. In the vineyard, yields are restricted, and cover crops have been reintroduced to protect the soils.
LA DEVINE DU CLOS CANTENAC, AOC SAINT-ÉMILION GRAND CRU, 2023
Medium purple hue. Forward, inviting nose of red currant, plum, violets, licorice and black cherry. The palate has heft and bluster, offering an array of black cherry, blackcurrant, black pepper and mint, plus cedar and clove. There are firm, fine-grained tannins and usefully high acidity hinting at a promising future. Finishes strong with rippling blackcurrant fruit. 2026-2030 –mp 5540

Blackcurrant, black pepper, mint, clove
Beef entrecôte with butter beans and red-wine sauce
Light pink hue. Youthful and reserved but showing plenty of promise: underneath the puppy fat, there is a core of red currant and strawberry supported by delicate floral notes. On the palate, this shows the beginnings of generous aspects with strawberry, cherry and cranberry, a firm acidic structure and commendable length. If I were a betting man, I would bank on this coming up flush. 2026-2027– mp
Medium ruby hue. Intense, even indulgent nose of vanilla, clove, dark chocolate and smoke that hints at its ageing potential. The palate shows heart: boisterous black cherry, cooked plum and sultana backed by brisk acidity and chunky tannins with a bit of pencil lead thrown in. Full throttle stuff that will eventually blossom into gorgeousness. 2028-2035 – mp
CLOS CANTENAC, AOC SAINT-ÉMILION GRAND CRU, 2023
Deep ruby hue. Rather youthful but with a core of concentrated blackcurrant and black cherry fruit under a blanket of fulsome oak. The palate reveals robust tannins – this is certainly in need of cellar time – while there is plenty of acidity to keep it afloat while those tannins soften. Vanilla, tar, nutmeg and clove to the fore take centre stage on the beefy finish. Patience is the word. 2029-2035 –mp

CLOS CANTENAC, AOC SAINTÉMILION GRAND CRU VERTICAL TASTING CASE: 2 BOTTLES EACH: 2019, 2020, 2021 (WOOD CASE)
$ 145 $ 870
Clos Cantenac, located in Bordeaux’s prestigious Saint-Émilion, produces wines of depth and finesse: the 2019 vintage is ripe and richly textured, while the 2020 is vibrant with lively fruit thanks to a more moderate growing season. The 2021, the coolest vintage, showcases fresh acidity and elegance. All three reflect the estate’s commitment to creating wines with balance, longevity and vintagespecific character.
CLOS CANTENAC, AOC SAINT-ÉMILION GRAND CRU, 2019
Merlot 5549
The 2019 Clos Cantenac is an unabashedly big wine with a dense, velvety texture tapering to muscular tannins. The nose is restrained initially with herbal and savoury nuances. This understated, brooding quality is quickly replaced by a riot of baked fruit and floral notes. This is a ripe, bold wine with a subtly warming finish. It will benefit from a few years additional cellaring for the oak and tannins to harmonize further. 2026-2040 –jb
CLOS CANTENAC, AOC SAINT-ÉMILION GRAND CRU, 2020
Merlot
The 2020 vintage is as powerful as the 2019 but has a fresher, more lifted fruit profile. Aromas of ripe and cooked black and blue fruit mingle with pleasant balsamic, forest floor nuances and gamey undertones. The weighty, fleshy palate is nicely matched by bright acidity and a juicy fruit character. Finishes with grippy tannins and lingering, subtly bitter herbal notes that only add to the complexity and balance. 2027-2040 –jb
CLOS CANTENAC, AOC SAINT-ÉMILION GRAND CRU, 2021
Merlot, Cabernet Franc
The 2021 vintage is a marginally lighter wine with a more refined, high-toned elegance. The nose is shier than 2019 and 2020, revealing layers of peppery, earthy and tangy dark fruit. The palate is full bodied yet lithe balancing firm, fine-grained tannins with a taut, structured frame and lively acidity. A long, polished finish with already approachable tannins hints at a graceful evolution over the moderate term. 2026-2036 –jb

Beaujolais probably needs little introduction but just as a refresher: the region is the southern-most part of Burgundy and actually closer to Lyon and the Rhone Valley than Beaune. Primarily red wine made of the Gamay grape, the rise and the eventual fall of its annual “Beaujolais Nouveau” campaigns was its most recent claim to fame. However, if you haven’t looked lately, there has been a steady renaissance of the region rooted in its return to the quality focus, greater expectations of the grapes and the vineyards and more traditional treatment in the winery. While there is still plenty of typical – and some quite
good – examples of what Beaujolais was to a consumer for many years, there are more and more serious examples of Villages or Cru bottlings that show an even greater expression of terroir and ageability not expected of these wines in the past. Some of these are favourably compared to mid-level Pinotbased Burgundies from Cote d’Or for value and what they offer in the glass. And while it is still a red-wine region – 95% of production in fact – there has been a significant growth of rosé and Chardonnay-based whites from 1% to 5% within a matter of years, offering value and with some showing promise.

DOMAINE SANCY, AOP JULIÉNAS, 2024

DOMAINE SANCY CRU DU BEAUJOLAIS CASE: 2 BOTTLES EACH: CHÉNAS, SAINT-AMOUR, JULIÉNAS
This mixed case from Domaine Sancy offers a chance to compare three of Beaujolais' renowned crus: Juliénas, Chénas and Saint-Amour. Each wine reflects its unique terroir from Juliénas’ granite and clay soils and Chénas’ granite-rich, highaltitude vineyards to Saint-Amour’s more temperate climate. Each has its own personality: Juliénas is bold, Chénas elegant and Saint-Amour fragrant and silky. Together, they offer a fascinating exploration of Beaujolais diversity.
The Beaujolais cru village of Juliénas is known for its firmer, fuller-bodied Gamay grown on steep southerly slopes of weathered granite and clay. The 2024 from Domaine Sancy needs a little time but is already very pleasant with its vibrant red and blackberry fruit, its lingering spiced notes and its finely structured, sinewy tannins. 2026-2033 –jb
This Chénas is a little fuller in body and more firmly structured than is typical for the cru. Restrained tart red and blue fruit mingle with earthy, peppery and herbal notes. Bright acidity keeps it brisk, while firm tannins add grip. A little closed now but offers good depth and moderate aging potential. 2026-2033 –jb

A St. Amour with the cru’s signature elegance, though marginally firmer in structure. Tangy red berries mingle with floral and peppery undertones; lively acidity lifts the fruit and leads into a brisk, fresh finish, highlighting its bright, food-friendly character. 2025-2033 –jb
Coq au vin
Château Séraphine, a family-owned estate since 2016, is situated in the heart of Pomerol. The moderating influence of the nearby Dordogne River creates optimal growing conditions for the region’s star grape, Merlot. This estate’s 2.2 hectares of vineyards are planted, in part, on Pomerol’s famous blue clay soils, which impart distinctive richness and finesse to the wines. The Krajewski family have a careful, minimal-intervention winemaking approach: grapes are hand-sorted, then fermented and aged in a mix of bespoke steel tanks, barrels and amphoras. “A rising star in Pomerol,” according to Jane Anson in Decanter, Château Séraphine’s wines balance purity, character and longevity.
The 2023 vintage of Château Séraphine’s grand vin is an imposing, powerful wine with dense, full-bodied richness. Lavishly oaked with vanilla and cedar notes complementing fragrant floral, ripe red and dark fruit and underlying exotic spice. Fresh acidity provides balances and lift. Finishes with ripe yet still youthful, muscular tannins. Needs another 4–5 years to harmonize. A beautifully complex and perfumed expression. 2029-2043– jb

A FAMILY’S PASSION IN THE HEART OF POMEROL
With its weighty structure and glossy texture, the 2023 vintage “L’innocence” cuvée is both powerful and refined. Already quite approachable with good midterm cellaring potential. 2026-2037– jb 5550 L'INNOCENCE DE SÉRAPHINE, AOC POMEROL, 2023
The Sauternes vineyards of Château Haut-Bergeron span four communes, with certain parcels bordering the legendary Château d'Yquem. Since the 19th century, the Lamothe family has excelled in the local art of producing complex, lusciously sweet wines from Botrytis-affected Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Regular high scores – and over 70 gold medals – are a testament to their success. The estate recently celebrated its 200th anniversary with the release of the opulent 2020 vintage which will feature a special anniversary label. Sauternes lovers will also enjoy the fresh, vibrant 2022 vintage, also on offer in this cellar.
An exceptional Sauternes: full bodied, luscious yet lifted with a fine balance of tangy acidity and lavish but well-integrated oak. The wine offers intense botrytis character with complex toffee, nutty and marmalade notes, complemented by tropical fruit and lifted, lemony flavors. Smooth and concentrated with a long, hedonistically sweet finish balanced by lively freshness. 2025-2035– jb
RARE WINES TO ENHANCE YOUR CELLAR
The 2022 vintage is full bodied and luscious with a weighty texture. Wellintegrated oak adds subtle vanilla notes, while intense tropical fruit flavours of mango and pineapple are complemented by salted caramel and custard. It is sweet and plush with modest freshness but may lose balance with age, limiting its aging potential. Drinking well now with good typicity. 2025-2030– jb

France, the top European exporter of malted barley, has a natural advantage in whisky production. Rozelieures, a small village between Nancy and Épinal, is home to the Grallet family who have farmed cereals there since the 19th century. In 2002, Sabine Grallet and Christophe Dupic, passionate whisky lovers,
founded their own brand. Uniquely, Rozelieures oversees every stage of production – from barley cultivation to bottling – an achievement matched by only one Scottish distillery, Springbank. The result is a whisky well worth tasting.
