Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell Join us in reading Eleanor & Park during the 11th annual Omaha Reads campaign.

Set in Omaha, Neb., over the course of a school year in the mid-80s, this is the story of two star-crossed misfits who are smart enough to know that first loves almost never last, but are brave and desperate enough to try.

Omaha Reads is Omaha’s biggest book club and aims to promote literacy and provide the city with a common theme to discuss. One book is selected each year and celebrated with book discussions, author visits, and related programs and events.

Rainbow Rowell is the author of four critically acclaimed novels, including Eleanor & Park. Her fifth novel, Carry On, will be released Oct. 6.

Banned Books Panel Discussion Tues | Sept 29 6:30 - 7:30 pm Abrahams Branch OPL will highlight the value of free and open access to information during Banned Books Week by hosting a panel to discuss challenged and banned books. This year, Banned Books Week will focus on young adult books.

Panelists include former OPL assistant library director Verda Bialac; author Marilyn Coffey; author and University of Nebraska—Lincoln professor Timothy Schaffert; and Laura Pietsch, supervisor of library services for Omaha Public Schools.

Panel members will share their perspectives and answer questions about controversial book challenges and censorship.

“Eleanor & Park” was challenged by a Minnesota school district’s Parents Action League in 2013.

Director Search Update As we approach the beginning of fall, it’s hard to believe how much has already happened this year. With the departure of OPL’s previous executive director in January, many library staff members have shifted roles and responsibilities to ensure that OPL continues to provide the quality of service that Omaha and Douglas County residents deserve. It’s our sincere hope that you didn’t even notice.

Our top priority is and always will be you. Whatever is happening behind the scenes at OPL, our mission remains the same – to strengthen our communities by connecting people with ideas, information and innovative services.

Keeping this common goal at the forefront of our minds helps us to provide the services and resources people have come to expect from their public library, such as access to books, DVDs, music, research tools, computers, and more. We’re also moving forward with new ideas and relationships that create opportunities for individuals to discover their own potential.

While seeking a new executive director, the search committee identified many talented candidates to help drive OPL’s efforts into the future. By the time you receive your next Connect newsletter, we hope to be introducing you to OPL’s new executive director. It’s been a long time coming, but finding the best person to lead Omaha’s library system will be well worth the wait.

Thank you for your patience and support during this transitional time. Most of all, thank you for using your library. There’s so much to look forward to, and we are thrilled to have you as a part of it!

Summer Reading Program Wrap-Up Heroes of all kinds saved the day during this year’s Summer Reading Program (SRP). Kids, teens and adults had the chance to enjoy their favorite superheroes and celebrate local community heroes. SRP participants met horses at the Omaha Police Department barn, made superhero gear, learned about the historic figures of the Lewis and Clark journey, and much more at over 1,000 programs throughout the city.

Events and activities provided educational and fun ways to participate in SRP, but reading has always been the emphasis of the program. This year, 24,219 participants logged an outstanding 202,824 hours of reading time during the summer months.

Participants also collected virtual badges through program attendance, sharing opinions about books, making and getting book recommendations, and exploring a different genre of book. For each activity completed or event attended, participants redeemed a code online to receive a virtual badge. New badges were available this summer, providing over 60 badges for each age group to collect.

More than 70,000 virtual badges were collected by library users during SRP. Thank you to the SRP primary sponsor, Cox Communications, and to the many new and returning sponsors who provided the support to make this year’s program a success.

Public Public examines space in public places through the lens of art, and architectural interventions and investigations. Featuring a range of mediums, the exhibit proposes alternative dialogues to the spatial configurations that dictate contemporary civic environments.

Download Nebraska, a collaboration between OPL and Hear Nebraska, is a new website that allows OPL card holders to download free music from local bands and musicians.

OPL strives to connect people with ideas, information and innovative services that matter to them. Offering access to local music in a city with such a vibrant music scene serves to support local artists while allowing Omaha area residents to discover unique content.

Teen Read Week is a national teen literacy initiative created in 1998 to encourage teens to be regular readers and library users. The campaign’s theme for 2015 is Get Away @ your library. The intent is for libraries to help teens escape from the day-to-day grind of school, homework, family responsibilities, and part-time jobs by picking up a book.

Staff Spotlight Challenge accepted! When teams from the Omaha Parks and Recreation Department called upon other city departments to participate in the 2015 Omaha Women’s Triathlon on June 7, three OPL employees answered the call. Laurie Hajek-Jones, senior clerk at South Omaha Library; Megan KleinHewett, adult services librarian at Main Library; and Cynthia Vana, library specialist at Millard Branch; formed Team Dewey Decimators to represent OPL in this community event.

Volunteer Spotlight

Volunteerism teaches teen work ethic Rachel Callahan was in a pickle when she realized that she had outstanding fines on her library account. As a teenager with no job, she needed to find a way to reconcile her account, and decided to apply to OPL’s All Clear program.

All Clear is a program offered to patrons ages 10-18 as a way to clear fines and maintain check out privileges while learning about responsibility and the value of volunteer service, as well as acquiring work experience at Omaha Public Library. Through the program, Callahan started volunteer work in October 2014 and had cleared her fines within two months. She decided to stay on as a volunteer with Willa Cather Branch.

“I needed service hours for college applications,” said Callahan, “and I liked it. It seemed like everyone enjoyed having me there.”

Callahan has worked on a variety of tasks at OPL, including helping to prepare materials for Summer Reading Program events and shelving books.

“She has done everything we have asked willingly and cheerfully,” said Willa Cather Branch children’s librarian Lori Pitman.

This fall, Callahan will be a freshman at Washington University in St. Louis studying chemistry and believes her experience as an OPL volunteer will serve her well.

“Volunteering has taught me how to better follow directions, listen and practice strong work ethic,” said Callahan.

The Omaha Women’s Triathlon brings together women of all athletic abilities to promote the pursuit of healthy and active lifestyles. The event consisted of a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride, and a 5k run.

Teams had the option to participate in the event as a relay, with each member of the team completing one leg of the triathlon.

This option encouraged Klein-Hewett to join the team. “I have always wanted to try a triathlon, but cycling isn’t a strong suit for me,” said Klein-Hewett. “Having the opportunity to do a triathlon as a team let me experience the swimming portion of the race without having to commit to the whole thing. Plus, being able to do it as a team was fun! We supported one another during our training and on the day of the event.”

Congratulations Laurie, Megan and Cynthia on a job well done! In case you’re curious, books about triathlons can be found in the 790s section of the Dewey Decimal System, under “recreation.”

Podcast welcomes 1877 Society, OPL

The 1877 Society, a relatively new young professionals networking group within the Omaha Public Library Foundation (OPLF), recently participated in the second installment of the Gather Omaha podcast.

The podcast, which was recorded live on July 22 at Aromas Coffeehouse in Benson, is designed to share stories and experiences happening in Omaha.

“Through the coffeehouse, I consistently meet customers who are humbly doing important work in our area. Our team created Gather Omaha to share their stories and provide an additional platform for these incredible people and projects,” said Autumn Pruitt, Aromas Coffeehouse owner. “It is easy to be discouraged about problems in Omaha. We hope that our podcast will inform listeners on how to become involved with these organizations and serve as a reminder of the various and continual forces of good that are happening right here in our city.”

The podcast focused on the relevance and importance of libraries in our community. The event featured Micki Dietrich, Omaha Public Library community engagement and outreach coordinator; Rebecca Stavick, Do Space executive director; and Wendy Townley, OPLF development director. Micah Yost was the moderator.

In Memory of Patrick Esser October 26, 1956 – July 20, 2015

With heavy hearts and deep respect, OPL staff say goodbye to a dear colleague and friend, Patrick Esser.

Esser served 13 of his 30 years of service with OPL as the technology manager. Esser passed away after a brave struggle with cancer.

Esser was born and raised in Omaha, and was a graduate of Creighton Prep High School and the University of Nebraska Omaha. He originally joined the library staff in 1974 as a library page at the Main Library. Through the years, he worked in a variety of roles, and was eventually transferred to the Business, Science and Technology department in 1987. In 1990, Esser took leave to pursue his Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Iowa. He returned to OPL as many library functions were becoming automated. He developed a keen understanding of library technology and systems and helped to bring OPL into the digital age. He was honored by the City of Omaha in 2000 as Employee of the Year.

“Patrick was a kind and gentle man. If you asked him a technology question, he would research it thoroughly and give you an answer - sometimes more than one answer as he liked to delve deeply into an issue and provide several scenarios on outcome,” said assistant library director Maggie Tarelli-Falcon. “He was an expert on our library computer system and his knowledge and talent will be greatly missed.”
