Patrick “Blake” Leeper Saturday, July 3 - Third Business Session

Sponsored by Optimist International Foundation

Patrick “Blake” Leeper was born on August 31st, 1989, in Kingsport, Tennessee. Born with both legs missing below the knee, Blake still spent his young life focused on succeeding in sports. At nine months old, he began wearing prosthetics and spent his young life thriving in sports. Blake’s top sport was basketball. During high school, Blake almost quit athletic endeavors – as an aspiring pre-med student, he felt that he needed to apply himself fully ahead of the college admission process. However, a high school teammate, (and current NFL standout) Cody Sensabaugh convinced Blake to continue playing basketball during his senior year. On Saturday, July 3, during the 3rd / Closing Session at the International Convention, find out more about Blake’s journey through college and on to becoming an Olympian! Welcome to Atlanta! I am extremely happy to be able to greet you with those words as we gather in person for the first time in too long for most of us. When we left Louisville, Kentucky at the end of the 2019 convention, we never imagined the changes we would see in the world, even as President-Designate Adrian asked us to iMagine a revitalized Optimist International. The last two years have been challenging for all of us, but we are here now to celebrate together, once again, and renew friendships that we were only able to do in the virtual world at last year’s successful virtual convention. Many of our friends will be joining us virtually again, and our Convention this year will be the best of both worlds as we conduct our first hybrid live and virtual convention. You will be a part of history, and I encourage you to take full advantage of all the opportunities presented to be energized, motivated and inspired by your fellow optimists and sensational keynote speakers. There will be changes this year as we combine the Fellowship Luncheon and the Oldtimers breakfast into the Heritage of Optimism Brunch. Please attend and provide feedback for us to make plans for our next convention in Reno, Nevada. Please take advantage of the training opportunities as well, as we have the best people in our organization presenting remarkable programs for you. While you are in Atlanta, please take advantage of the many leisure activities available to you. There is a world class aquarium, historical sights, Centennial Olympic Park and the World of Coca Cola all within walking distance of the convention hotel. You also want to eat as much of the local food as possible (don’t worry you’re on vacation, calories don’t count). The Host Area committee is available to answer all your questions about tourist sites and local food establishments. While there are less people attending in person than we are used to, we will have the largest group of Optimists to attend a baseball game during an International Convention when 140 of us visit Truist Park for the Braves vs. Marlins baseball game and fireworks night. We will also be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Optimist International Foundation this week. We are calling this a family reunion for our Optimist Family. Please find the opportunity to visit with the Patriarchs of our family 1973-1974 International President Ron Thompson who presided over our convention the last time we were in Atlanta, and 1977-1978 International President Don Arnwine who was our convention chair the last time we were in Atlanta. Thank you for Choosing Optimism, and thank you for Choosing to join us in Atlanta.

Mark Weinsoff Optimist International President, 2020-21

Fellow Optimist, You have made a great choice to celebrate your optimistic journey at our International Convention and we do appreciate your continued commitment and support. The Southeast Region is excited to have you. Welcome! The GATEway District and the Host Area Committee have done everything they can to ensure that your Atlanta experience remains etched in your memory for a long time to come. So we encourage you, to immerse yourself in the southern hospitality of your hosts and as much as you will participate in the varied activities and business of the Convention. As you may be aware, when we started this Choose Optimism year, we committed to running our leg of the relay knowing that despite the difficulties of the time, those who passed the Optimist Torch onto us had done a tremendous job at keeping the flame of Optimism burning even in the face of much global uncertainties. Our Atlanta Convention is, therefore, a tribute to the unwavering compassion and the unshakeable spirit of service that are rooted in our DNA as Optimists. It is also a celebration of our success in making our organization stronger to serve more children, young people and communities across the world. This Convention is another opportunity to remind the world that just as we did a little more than a hundred years ago – and at so many other challenging times over the last century – we Optimists are always ready to lift up the spirit of hope and water the seeds of happiness and optimism way into the future. Do take this opportunity to celebrate your choice of happiness, show appreciation to your fellow Optimists for choosing Optimism, and recommit to the journey of hope, positive vision, and bringing out the best in our youth, our communities and ourselves. Welcome to the optimistic party. Welcome to the Southeast Region. Welcome to Atlanta Convention 2021.

Welcome South, Friends! As Governor of the Great GATEway District, I wish you to experience the good-ole southern hospitality offered by our members from Georgia and East Tennessee! I know that you are eager for Optimist training, Optimist fellowship, and just Optimism; yet, there is much to see and do in the Atlanta area. Atlanta is rich in history, culture, culinary delights and just simple fun! Many attractions are within a short walk of the convention hotel; others are just a short MARTA train ride or auto ride away. Two venues offering exciting views of downtown Atlanta are the Sundial Restaurant (located across the street from our convention hotel) and Skyview Atlanta (ferris wheel at Olympic Park). Enjoy an evening in Atlanta with other Optimists over a southern-style meal at one of our many restaurants! Take advantage of one of the tours being offered during the Convention so you can see the variety our city offers. During your Convention stay I invite you to take a minute to thank members of our Host Area Committee, who will be wearing bright green shirts! Chaired by Gwen Gable, this team has contributed many long hours to help create a memorable experience for all attendees! Thank you for coming to Atlanta for our 103rd Optimist International Convention! It is an honor and pleasure to have you with us!

104th OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION Reno, Nevada Brace yourself. Reno Tahoe is about to pull you in all different directions. There are so many things to do in Reno and so little time. You can rock climb in the heart of downtown and rock out on the top of a mountain. Make art and destroy monotony. Paddleboard and crowd surf. Win big and lose yourself. So, what’s first? You could start off by taking in the local flavor at one of our delicious restaurants or craft breweries. Culinarily speaking, we’ve got it made, from casual, pub-style dining to upscale, farm-to-table eateries. Rent a kayak, take a hike, soak in the sun next to an alpine lake or enjoy a glass of wine while overlooking the Truckee River. If you’re feeling ambitious, do it all in one day. Endless options – that’s Reno Tahoe. There are plenty of Lake Tahoe activities to be enjoyed, in and out of the water. Beyond the inviting, crystal-clear water, Lake Tahoe is surrounded by the peaks of the Sierra Nevada and acres of national forest. Mountain biking, hiking, river rafting, camping and sightseeing are just a few of the things to do in the Lake Tahoe area.

SILVER LEGACY RESORT Located in the heart of the Biggest Little City in downtown Reno Nevada, Silver Legacy Resort Casino offers amenities and attractions for the perfect vacation getaway. Big-name entertainment, 6 award-winning restaurants, 8 shops and boutiques, and a beautiful high-ceiling casino make Silver Legacy the best choice for a hotel with modern amenities and friendly, impeccable service. Silver Legacy is connected via walkways to Eldorado Resort Casino and Circus Circus Reno; is within walking distance of the Greater Nevada Field, Truckee river and dozens of restaurants and performance venues, and is located 30-45 minutes away from world-class 14 Lake Tahoe/Truckee California ski resorts. See you next year in Reno! Be sure to stop by the Future Conventions booth in the Community Involvement Expo to pick up brochures of the hotel and Reno and Tahoe, Nevada highlights and start planning your trip to the Wild West!
