Holiday of 2019: “Songs of the Scuttled” The road to Roark’s heart passes through Scotland. It wasn’t the famed rock formations of Skye, glorious North Sea reefs or slopes of Glencoe that moved our wayward souls. Nor did the history, color, ale and music sway our compass cometh Holiday. It was the Highland Whisky Trail that summoned us as the artery to each of Scotland’s precious organs. By hook or by crook, bagpipes led us through the highlands on trail North through the oldest operating distilleries in the country. Serendipitously we chased the fairies of Skye on motor bikes, while the jugs and cracks on the seawalls of Elgol provided the perfect escape route. As with any foul weathered trip, Roark was tempted into the cold as Scottish slabs tested our resolve to navigate an ever-opinionated Sea. Every great climate spawns ingenuity. Our product was designed with the Scottish climate and adventure-travel with a mindfulness to purpose. We were inspired by the tweed of the Outer Hebrides that’s hand dyed and woven by village communities throughout the islands, the waxed cottons of Dundee, as well as the floral markings of a medieval warring tribe named the “Picts.” And yes, the spirits of the highlands took us places oft not imagined. Our crew of revivalists was comprised of surfers Parker Coffin, Raph Bruhwiler and Ivah Wilmot, climber and photographer Drew Smith, skateboarder Jamie Thomas, adventure writer Jeff Johnson as well as resident photographer Dylan Gordon. Through Roark’s exploration of Scotland and the unearthing of the country’s history, we found a unique opportunity to partner with Harris Tweed, premium wool tweed woven by the inhabitants of the Outer Hebrides.

The islanders of Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra produce this luxury cloth entirely by hand and have long been known for the excellence of their weaving. Over the decades, Harris Tweed was embraced by the world, from royalty and landed gentry to Hollywood icons and the finest designers of culture. In the early 1990s the industry set out to transform and modernize itself by producing a new double width loom, re-training weavers, introducing new, tougher quality standards and marketing a new wider, softer, lighter tweed. Roark presents a co-branded jacket, cap, wallet and flask with a label of authenticity.

K E N N E T H M A C K E N Z I E M I L L - S TO R N O WAY Our love for special products reached new levels as we experienced a tour and deep dive into the Kenneth Mackenzie Mill, one of the special locations in which Harris Tweed is manufactured. From the sheep farm, through the dying process, then twisted into individual strands, ultimately finding their way into the home of a weaver, in which every sheet is manually pedaled on a loom. The entire process is hand done by the community on the Isle of Lewis & Harris straight to garments that we will specially release come Holiday.

ELECTRIC Always having our backs, Electric provided once again to outfit the team with a mix of eyewear as we navigated our way through northern Scotland. Primarily grey skies, the latest Melanin infused Zombie and Knoxville protected the eyes and provided just the right tint as we navigated by motorcycle and foot trail.

BMW MOTORRAD CENTRAL With such a large adventure riding culture in Scotland, we knew there was only one way to commute the Isle of Skye. Thanks to our friends at BMW Motorrad Central and guide Martin, the crew was outfitted with the latest from BMWâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s adventure collection of 750 & 850â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s along with an R nineT Urban to take on all the conditions the Skye could throw at us.

BELL HELMETS High speeds, harsh weather, and unpredictable road conditions can all make for a difficult scenario on two wheels. Thanks to our friends at Bell, we had the safest lids possible to keep us protected from the elements.
