WANNA PL AY? GAME ON!

“Hungry Hungry Hippos,” anyone? Maybe a round of “Red Rover, Red Rover” or “Twister”? You can play to your heart’s content from 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday at PlayDate OKC’s June event. At PlayDate events, “kids” of all ages (21 and older, that is) get their game on with board games, interactive games and video games. It’s social networking at its finest — a place where it doesn’t matter if you’re single or taken, white or black, old or young. All that matters is that you’re ready to play. The phrase “Don’t hate the player, hate the game” doesn’t apply at PlayDate events. Here, it’s all about the game. “The catch line is ‘Wanna play?’” said Candice Henderson, president of Us Productions. She launched the PlayDate OKC concept in 2009. “What are they going to say, ‘No’? That’s what they’re there to do, play games!” The event will be at Cox Convention Center, 1 Myriad Gardens. Admission is $10. For more information, call 227-0364, e-mail info@playdateokc.com or go online to playdateokc.com. “You don’t stop playing because you get old,” Henderson said. “You get old because you stop playing.”

The evening will feature a mix of hors d’oeuvres by the Catering Connection that will compliment the martini, margarita and sangria bars by Bin 73 Wine Bar. There also will be an open, full-service coffee bar by Cafe Evoke. Partygoers can make their own salsa with a mix of fresh, seasonal ingredients, create their own sweet treat at the “mix your own truffle” bar and have a quick course in making fresh fruit mixers while concocting their own signature drink at the “mix your own cocktail” bar. Deejay extraordinaire Mix Master Mooneyham will be on hand for musical entertainment, and everyone can enjoy one last look at the exhibit of mixed-media art by William Christenberry that closes the following day. There also will be an opportunity to win a limited edition photographic portfolio by Phil Stein worth $750. Tickets are $75 in advance or $80 at the door. For more information or to buy tickets, go online to artspaceatuntitled.org or call 815-9995.

Glamour, tailoring and style

all in a day's work for designer Lourdes Chavez Lourdes Chavez owes a bit of who she is as a designer to the companies she worked for before starting her own more than 10 years ago. “I have worked at three companies all my life,” she said. From each she brought something valuable to the design table. Seven years at Travilla instilled in her an appreciation for glamour. Bill Travilla was a Hollywood costume designer who created the iconic dress Marilyn Monroe

wore over a subway grating in “The Seven Year Itch.” Another seven years at Ernst Strauss allowed Lourdes to work with different materials and master tailoring. “With Travilla I loved the glamour,” she said duringavisittoBalliet’s.“Ijustcan’tletitgo.I still show a little piece of it. I hope some women will always want to dress and be glamorous, and they do.” At Ernst Strauss, she created daytime pieces out of Ultrasuede, mink, fox and leather. Working for a company known for great tailoring helped her elevate her own skills. All of that and more rolls into the Lourdes Chavez signature collection featuring daytime, evening and custom pieces. Each is special; there’s nothing plain about any of it. She uses all European fabrics that beg to be touched. Seamstresses with an eye for perfection match the lines and prints with precision. “Fabrics match the way they’re supposed to be,” she said.

ANTI-ART SCHOOL ADDING SPICE TO LIFE DRAWING By Heather Warlick-Moore / Mood Publication Editor Life drawing doesn’t have to be serious. In fact, it can be downright playful. That’s the case at Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School sessions.

who was tired of the usual silent life-drawing classes with uninteresting and bored models. Since then, the concept has bloomed worldwide. Today, Dr. Sketchy’s franchises are in more than 80 cities on several continents.

“It’s where life drawing meets cabaret,” said Marilyn Artus, who owns Dr. Sketchy’s OklahomaCityfranchise.“Wehave a beautiful flamboyant model with costumes and props. They can be a side-show performer, a burlesque model, a singer, you know, just people that are kind of outrageous and have big personalities.” At Dr. Sketchy sessions, artists of all skill levels from coloring book aficionados to fullfledged professionals meet to have a rip-roaring good time. What makes these life-drawing sessions so much fun? Well, a full bar never hurts. Nor do wacky contests such as who can create the best sketch using Cheese Whiz while Hula-hooping or linked in to a conga line. “It just creates such a fun environment,” Artus said. But don’t get the wrong idea. Dr. Sketchy’s events can be serious, too. In between all the shenanigans, artists have several 20-minute sessions to sketch the beautiful models who change costumes four times. “It’s just a lot of fun for people who are maybe out of art school and aren’t creating with other people anymore, for them to come back in and be in an environment creating with other people,” Artus said.

This sketch was created at a Dr. Sketchy’s session by Muriel Fahrion, the artist who created Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears.

Burlesque themes are becoming quite trendy. You can catch the “7 Deadly Sins Review” burlesque show around town. You can take burlesque dance lessons at Teaze Dance & Fitness. There’s even a burlesque festival in the planning for August. “Long ago, the burlesque trade was completely run by men. And there’s been a real resurgence in the burlesque movement as well, and it’s women controlling it, which I find fabulous,” Artus said. “Because it’s women presenting themselves in a sexual way that’s comfortable for them, and they get to make the terms on it.” Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School was started in 2005 by Molly Crabapple, a New York artist

Artus opened the Oklahoma City franchise in January 2009. She is a professional artist whose current exhibit, “Our Lady of the Anti-Personnel Weapon & Her Stepford Friends,” runs through Saturday at AKA Gallery, 3001 Paseo. The exhibit features Artus’ original artworks that incorporate vintage ads, images of the Virgin Mary or a nun, and weapons. One of Artus’ favorite moments from a recent Dr. Sketchy’s event: Muriel Fahrion, the artist who created Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears characters and now lives in Medicine Park, came by a session. Artus and Fahrion are friends, but the appearance was a surprise to the students. The evening’s model, Savonne the Minx, posed in a sexy Strawberry Shortcake costume. STOCKYARDS CITY TO HOST WINE FESTIVAL The Wines of the West Festival is a perfect time for wine lovers to taste Oklahoma’s best wines. The festival takes place Saturday in Stockyards City (at the Oklahoma City stockyards). Buy a wine passport and get it stamped by all the wineries at Stockyards City stores to be eligible for a variety of prizes. Stay for a block party and concert by the Rodeo Opry Saturday evening.

Proceeds of the evening’s entertainment will benefit the Rodeo Opry’s Granville Music School in Historic Stockyards City. Wine passports for the daytime activities, from 2 to 6 p.m., cost $10. Tickets to the evening festivities, which run from 6:30 to 10 p.m., are $40. Buy both for $45. Guests must be 21 to participate. For tickets, go online to stockyardscity.org.

also is named after the nature of winemaking. A bottle of wine, points out winery owner and president Mark Albrecht, is the culmination of scores of decisions — where to plant, how to grow, when to pick, how to age, where to age. “Winemaking truly is an educated guess. There’s no right or wrong to it,” Albrecht says. In a nod to the “educated” part of making wine — the science that winemaking judgments are based on — the labels carry a selection of winemaking formulas, an approach that has drawn a warm reception. So how much is in a name? Winemakers agree, if you don’t have something good in the glass, not much.

NEW PRODUCTS MAKE PERFECT NAILS A WRAP

Go online to mood.newsok.com to watch a video about the Minx nail wrap process.

Linda Miller | Fashion Editor Finally, a perfect set of natural nails with longwearing color or an eye-catching design is at women’s fingertips. We’re not trying to fake you out. Nails are getting plenty of buzz, and what’s new for natural nails is a big part of it. For years, the industry’s only hoopla came with the introduction of seasonal colors and the much-hyped Chanel must-have. Now, polish-loving women have more to be enthusiastic about than the “it” color. Chip-free manicures, once attainable only for those who wore acrylics, are now the perfect complement for natural nails. Prints and patterns worthy of a favorite sweater, and chrome metallics that shine brighter than foil-wrapped holiday packages, dress up fingers and toes. Leading the revolution are Minx, a heat-activated nail wrap that celebrities have taken a shine to, and the new CND Shellac, a long-wearing polish that’s described as a hybrid because it goes on like polish and wears like gel. OPI Axxium, introduced a year ago, is a colored gel that’s painted on with a brush. Stylists say it is thicker than Shellac and requires minimum roughing of the natural nail. Both Shellac and Axxium are UV-cured for staying power and continued shine.

All are professional-only products, so a salon visit is required. Besides a bigger pay out — $45 to $60 for Minx and up to $35 for Shellac — what’s the pay off? With Shellac and Axxium, it’s manicures that last two

weeks without chipping, dulling or wearing at the tips. The polish dries instantly, another big plus. Minx delivers mirror finishes and intricate designs that can’t be duplicated with polish.

Her customers ask most often for the houndstooth pattern and silver chrome. Instead of a full pedicure, she cleans up the cuticle and shapes the nails before heating up and applying the wrap.

Shellac or Axxium is a personal preference, but both are a great alternative for anyone who doesn’t want acrylics, said Samantha Hanby, owner of Polish Nail Salon in Yukon.

At Diva Salon, nail technician Debbie Harris is talking up Shellac.

While celebrities such as Beyonce, Rihanna and Lady Gaga often show off Minx fingernails, stylists say it wears best on toes. Hanby wore her flash of gold for four weeks with no noticeable wear-and-tear. She said women like Minx, as well as hand-painted designs on acrylic nails, because it’s an expression of their creativity, and it’s special. “Clients tell me they can show their personality with their nails,” Hanby said. She said for some women it’s almost addictive. They walk out the door, start receiving compliments and look ahead to what design or color they want next. Elena Parr, nail technician at LeFringe near downtown Oklahoma City, said she loves Minx. “I’ve done a few sets on hands, but on toes, they last forever, basicallyuntilthetoenailgrowsout,”Parrsaid. “They last through swimming, almost anything, and they don’t wear. All of my customers really, really like them. I’ve been working with Minx for nine months now and haven’t had a problem.”

5

“I absolutely love it,” she said. “I was so anxious to get my hot little hands on it that I went to Tulsa to pick it up. I’ve been doing Shellac since the first of May.” Customer response is the same; they love it, she said. “They’re excited about it. They had some of the same concerns. They wanted to take care of natural nails and use a product that was reliable and researched and not damaging in any way.” While Shellac can be soaked off at home with acetone, most stylists recommend salon-applied individual removal wraps that cover the nail and limit finger and skin exposure to acetone. Like acrylics, OPI’s Axxium is removed by soaking nails in acetone. The thicker gel often requires more soaking time. Acrylics have been a main stay for women whose nails were thin and weak or who didn’t want to deal with polish that chipped quickly. Acrylics continue to be popular, but the nail industry anticipates women with natural nails coming to the salon for Minx, Shellac and Axxium — even if it’s just for special occasions or vacations. For more information about Minx or Shellac nail treatments or to locate a practicing salon near you, go online to minxnails.com and cnd.com.

Lyric Theatre opens season with lively ‘Pump Boys’ I feel obliged to begin this review with a disclaimer: The homespun charms of “Pump Boys and Dinettes” completely elude me. The show, Lyric Theatre’s 2010 season opener, functions as theatrical sleight of hand in that it tries to create something out of precious little. A stretch of highway in North Carolina provides the setting for “Pump Boys and Dinettes,” a place where filling station attendants flirt with the women who run the nearby diner. It’s part “Petticoat Junction,” with Frog Level and Smyrna standinginforHootervilleandPixley, and part “Green Acres,” without the mock sophistication to balance the rural humor. The musical’s two dozen songs hang precariously on what director David Lutken calls a “tissue of a story.” Unlike more conventional musicals, “Pump Boys” avoids conflict and has virtually no character development. But because it doesn’t aspire to grandiose expectations or lofty goals, it’s more of a perfect advertisement for “what you see is what you get.” The cast of six is uniformly strong. The men — Lutken, Jon Brown, Eric Scott Anthony and Louis Tucci — double as musicians, playing piano, guitar

mandolin, banjo, string bass, harmonica and accordion with conviction. The women — Barb Schoenhofer and Sherry Stregack — wring every ounce of humor out of their roles as the diner’s sassy waitresses. The score is filled with solos, duets and full company numbers, each offering a look into the lives of people whose motto is “taking it slow.” As Jim (Lutken) explains, “Work won’t kill you, but worry will. Worry is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do, but it don’t get you nowhere.” The lively “Highway 57” serves as an introduction to the cast, while the “Menu Song” is a honky-tonk number that enumerates the diner’s specialties. Later, the women sing about the importance of “Tips” as they

single out unsuspecting audience members in hopes that someone is carrying around some spare change. The men display their fine close harmony skills in “Fisherman’s Prayer,” but the livelier “No Holds Barred” suffers from excessive amplification, rendering most of the lyrics unintelligible. Jim recalls the grief of losing his grandmother in “Mamaw,” while L.M. (Brown) explains that his “Farmer Tan” is the secret behind his character’s charms. If the girls tend to be a livelier group than their filling station pals, the latter often employ an “aw shucks” attitude that endears them to the audience. Amanda Foust’s set design vividly brings to life the ramshackle filling station and the spic-and-span diner. Jeffrey Meek’s costumes further underscore the contrast, with overalls for the men and neatly starched aprons for the women. As a folksy slice of life about six residents in rural North Carolina, Lyric’s “Pump Boys” succeeds thanks to Lutken’s sure-handed but never intrusive direction and a cast of pros whose keen understanding of the material celebrates the unvarnished joys of country living. — Rick Rogers

CANCER (June 22-July 22): If you were to list the activities that fill your current life, you would find a glaring task that eats away the hours and doesn’t bring you much fulfillment or pleasure. Set the stage for a wonderful experience, and then invite people to enjoy it with you. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You are filled with curiosity and a driving desire to expand your mind. You’ll have three times the number of requests, queries and prayers you usually would, all of which will be answered in time. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23): You want to be where you are, doing what you’re doing. You thoroughly enjoy yourself. Instead of doing what you think people expect of you, pour your generosity into your highest goals.

DEAR DR. GRAHAM: I’m in prison because I got angry and killed someone, and I’m haunted by guilt. Someone told me that Jesus forgave a murderer once, but when I challenged him to prove it, he couldn’t find it in the Bible. I wish I could believe God will forgive me, but I can’t. — M.M. It may seem like over-the-top generosity, but the truth is that you would do the same and more for them, and probably have many times before. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Popular work is not the same thing as good work. What you’re doing now may not be understood by a majority of people, and that’s why you must have great faith to follow through. What you’re not taking into consideration is that there are many happily married pilots who enjoy flourishing family lives as well as careers. Do some more research about the various kinds of jobs that are offered in the aviation industry, and you may be pleased to find that you, too, can have both. And keep in mind that your ambitions may change as you get older.

DEAR ABBY: My 73-year-old mother took it upon herself to go to a senior center and

learn how the computer works — Internet, emails, etc. She has five children, and we’re all on the Internet. She didn’t tell us because she wanted it to be a surprise — and was it ever! I flipped when I turned on my computer and found her name on an incoming message! Abby, Mom doesn’t own a computer, and the nearest senior center that has one is 30 miles away, but that didn’t stop her. We’re currently setting up a computer for her, and I’m proud to say that she’ll be able to use it for more than playing one of her favorite card games, Hearts. We’re all proud of Mom! — Colleen in St. Paul, Minn.

DEAR COLLEEN: I salute your mother and the burgeoning number of seniors who refuse to be intimidated by technology. Computers and cell phones have become cheaper and easier to use, and Web surfing isn’t a “sport” that’s meant to be enjoyed only by the young. The computer-phobic can learn a lot from your mother’s example.

DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have been married five years and have a beautiful 4-year-old daughter. Two years ago, my wife cheated on three different occasions with three different men. Each time she admitted her infidelity to me the following day. I was heartbroken. I have fallen out of love with her and no longer find her attractive. I didn’t leave immediately because I didn’t want our daughter to be raised in a broken home. Also, my wife didn’t have a job. I thought I could forgive her and get over it, but I can’t and don’t think I ever will. Should I leave her or stay in a marriage where I feel I am being unfair to myself and that I deserve better? Please advise. — Betrayed in Kansas DEAR BETRAYED: I’m sorry your wife cheated on you — three times, yet. But if you have to ask me for permission to leave her, the answer is no. You’ll know the time is right when you are ready to take the responsibility for that decision all by yourself. Write DearAbby.com or P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069. SEN. SCOTT BROWN’S WIFE LEAVING TV NEWS JOB The wife of U.S. Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts is leaving her longtime job as a Boston television news reporter and will be working at a Washington TV station. Gail Huff says she is stepping down from WCVB-TV to spend more time with her husband and their daughters, Ayla and Arianna. She calls it one of the most difficult decisions of her career. Huff says she has accepted a part-time reporting job at WJLA-TV in Washington and plans to split her time between the capital and the family’s Massachusetts home. Huff did not campaign for her husband and has avoided covering stories about him before and after his upset win in the January special election to succeed the late Sen. Edward Kennedy. LEANN RIMES’ LOVE LIFE: IT’S COMPLICATED LeAnn Rimes is so over Dean Sheremet. But don’t hold your breath on her being the new Mrs. Eddie Cibrian anytime soon. The 27-year-old country songbird’s divorce was finalized Friday, six months after she and Sheremet, 29, reached a settlement and about a year since her torrid on-set affair with Cibrian doomed her marriage to her LeAnn Rimes former backup dancer. However, while Cibrian and his estranged wife, Brandi Glanville, had been close to ending their marriage, his recent unemployment situation has thrown a monkeywrench in their settlement plans. Cibrian was dumped from “CSI: Miami” after producers declined to pick up his contract. Cibrian had no immediate comment on his looming divorce, but Rimes was far from reticent.

MICHAELJACKSON SON PRINCE s c hool- b oun d They’ve been homeschooled all their lives, but now it seems Michael Jackson’s kids could be making the transition into a private school environment. According to a report, 13-year-old Prince will be attending a private school this fall to help him become more socialized and well-rounded. Katherine Jackson’s attorney Adam Streisand told reporters, “He is ready to branch out and have a more socialized experience.” Prince’s sister Paris and brother Blanket are yet to be assigned to a more traditional school locale, though Katherine Jackson, their grandmother and guardian, says she’s willing to think about it. “I’d say I’m a little less strict, but I’ve tried to follow the way Michael was raising them.” Source: www.celebrity-gossip.net

“It makes me sad that the media once again can take something as personal as a divorce and make it a top news story. It’s hard enough dealing with it on our own. Sucks to see it in your face at all times,” she tweeted on Sunday. Source: www.eonline.com

Vanessa Carlton: Bi and proud Between songs during her set at the Nashville Pride Festival on Saturday, the “Thousand Miles” singer made a big announcement to 18,000 of her closest pals. “I’ve never said this before, but I am a proud bisexual woman,” she proclaimed. Nashville Pride is a celebration of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, and given that she was the main headliner, it was hardly shocking that the 29-year-old singer-songwriter would drop Vanessa Carlton the news. Carlton has previously dated the likes of John Mayer and Third Eye Blind front man Stephan Jenkins. Source: www.eonline.com

I guess it started with Cyrus’ nearlynude Vanity Fair shoot when she was 15. Even then, she said she wanted people to realize she’s growing up. Looking back at that photo, it’s shocking to see just how much she has “grown up.” That is, if growing up means wearing less clothing. She recently told The Associated Press, “I’mnottryingtobeslutty....WhatI’m trying to do is make a point with my record and look consistent, in the way my record sounds and the way I dress.” The thing is, 17-y e a r- o l d Cyrus’ primary Hannah Montana fan base is aging 10 times slower than Cyrus’ image. And though some of her music appeals to a wider audience now — “Party in Miley Cyrus the USA” is a huge hit even among adults — her image is maturing too fast. It seems like every time I see her, she looks more and more like a dominatrix. Not to mention her “Can’t Be Tamed” video that caused such a stir for its blatant sexual overtones. I’m not hating on Miley — I think she’s a talented and beautiful young woman withabrightfuture.Ijustworrythatthe same preteens who are decorating their roomsinHannahMontanapropaganda will want to follow Cyrus’s new sexpot style that, while perhaps not “slutty,” is without a doubt inappropriate dress for normal teenage girls. — Heather Warlick-Moore
