all in a day's work for designer Lourdes Chavez Lourdes Chavez owes a bit of who she is as a designer to the companies she worked for before starting her own more than 10 years ago. “I have worked at three companies all my life,” she said. From each she brought something valuable to the design table. Seven years at Travilla instilled in her an appreciation for glamour. Bill Travilla was a Hollywood costume designer who created the iconic dress Marilyn Monroe

wore over a subway grating in “The Seven Year Itch.” Another seven years at Ernst Strauss allowed Lourdes to work with different materials and master tailoring. “With Travilla I loved the glamour,” she said duringavisittoBalliet’s.“Ijustcan’tletitgo.I still show a little piece of it. I hope some women will always want to dress and be glamorous, and they do.” At Ernst Strauss, she created daytime pieces out of Ultrasuede, mink, fox and leather. Working for a company known for great tailoring helped her elevate her own skills. All of that and more rolls into the Lourdes Chavez signature collection featuring daytime, evening and custom pieces. Each is special; there’s nothing plain about any of it. She uses all European fabrics that beg to be touched. Seamstresses with an eye for perfection match the lines and prints with precision. “Fabrics match the way they’re supposed to be,” she said.

For fall, Chavez offers a champagne-color tail-back jacket that can be worn with the expected pants or unexpectedly over a beaded dress. ANTI-ART SCHOOL ADDING SPICE TO LIFE DRAWING By Heather Warlick-Moore / Mood Publication Editor Life drawing doesn’t have to be serious. In fact, it can be downright playful. That’s the case at Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School sessions.

who was tired of the usual silent life-drawing classes with uninteresting and bored models. Since then, the concept has bloomed worldwide. Today, Dr. Sketchy’s franchises are in more than 80 cities on several continents.

“It’s where life drawing meets cabaret,” said Marilyn Artus, who owns Dr. Sketchy’s OklahomaCityfranchise.“Wehave a beautiful flamboyant model with costumes and props. They can be a side-show performer, a burlesque model, a singer, you know, just people that are kind of outrageous and have big personalities.” At Dr. Sketchy sessions, artists of all skill levels from coloring book aficionados to fullfledged professionals meet to have a rip-roaring good time. What makes these life-drawing sessions so much fun? Well, a full bar never hurts. Nor do wacky contests such as who can create the best sketch using Cheese Whiz while Hula-hooping or linked in to a conga line. “It just creates such a fun environment,” Artus said. But don’t get the wrong idea. Dr. Sketchy’s events can be serious, too. In between all the shenanigans, artists have several 20-minute sessions to sketch the beautiful models who change costumes four times. “It’s just a lot of fun for people who are maybe out of art school and aren’t creating with other people anymore, for them to come back in and be in an environment creating with other people,” Artus said.

Burlesque themes are becoming quite trendy. You can catch the “7 Deadly Sins Review” burlesque show around town. You can take burlesque dance lessons at Teaze Dance & Fitness. There’s even a burlesque festival in the planning for August. “Long ago, the burlesque trade was completely run by men. And there’s been a real resurgence in the burlesque movement as well, and it’s women controlling it, which I find fabulous,” Artus said. “Because it’s women presenting themselves in a sexual way that’s comfortable for them, and they get to make the terms on it.” Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School was started in 2005 by Molly Crabapple, a New York artist

Artus opened the Oklahoma City franchise in January 2009. She is a professional artist whose current exhibit, “Our Lady of the Anti-Personnel Weapon & Her Stepford Friends,” runs through Saturday at AKA Gallery, 3001 Paseo. The exhibit features Artus’ original artworks that incorporate vintage ads, images of the Virgin Mary or a nun, and weapons. One of Artus’ favorite moments from a recent Dr. Sketchy’s event: Muriel Fahrion, the artist who created Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears characters and now lives in Medicine Park, came by a session. Unlike the critter labels that were hot a few years ago, brainteaser labels are more about “Aha!” than “Aww.” TakeChaosTheory,azinfandel from Brown Estate Vineyards in the Napa Valley. “The concept in a nutshell is something that we see in the vineyard,” says Coral Brown, one of three siblings running the winery founded by their parents. “It’s about discovering order in seemingly random events.” The wine is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, the king of grapes, and zinfandel, which Brown calls “the court jester.” They’re opposites but complementary, she says. “The wine is just a crowdpleaser. Of course, we’ve got a lot of meteorologists and economists who are big fans of the wine. So how much is in a name? Winemakers agree, if you don’t have something good in the glass, not much.

Nails are getting plenty of buzz, and what’s new for natural nails is a big part of it. For years, the industry’s only hoopla came with the introduction of seasonal colors and the much-hyped Chanel must-have. Now, polish-loving women have more to be enthusiastic about than the “it” color. Chip-free manicures, once attainable only for those who wore acrylics, are now the perfect complement for natural nails. Prints and patterns worthy of a favorite sweater, and chrome metallics that shine brighter than foil-wrapped holiday packages, dress up ﬁngers and toes. Leading the revolution are Minx, a heat-activated nail wrap that celebrities have taken a shine to, and the new CND Shellac, a long-wearing polish that’s described as a hybrid because it goes on like polish and wears like gel. OPI Axxium, introduced a year ago, is a colored gel that’s painted on with a brush. Stylists say it is thicker than Shellac and requires minimum roughing of the natural nail. Both Shellac and Axxium are UV-cured for staying power and continued shine.

All are professional-only products, so a salon visit is required. Besides a bigger pay out — $45 to $60 for Minx and up to $35 for Shellac — what’s the pay off? With Shellac and Axxium, it’s manicures that last two

weeks without chipping, dulling or wearing at the tips. The polish dries instantly, another big plus. Minx delivers mirror ﬁnishes and intricate designs that can’t be duplicated with polish.

Her customers ask most often for the houndstooth pattern and silver chrome. Instead of a full pedicure, she cleans up the cuticle and shapes the nails before heating up and applying the wrap.

Shellac or Axxium is a personal preference, but both are a great alternative for anyone who doesn’t want acrylics, said Samantha Hanby, owner of Polish Nail Salon in Yukon.

Hanby wore her ﬂash of gold for four weeks with no noticeable wear-and-tear. She said women like Minx, as well as hand-painted designs on acrylic nails, because it’s an expression of their creativity, and it’s special. “Clients tell me they can show their personality with their nails,” Hanby said. She said for some women it’s almost addictive. They walk out the door, start receiving compliments and look ahead to what design or color they want next. Elena Parr, nail technician at LeFringe near downtown Oklahoma City, said she loves Minx. “I’ve done a few sets on hands, but on toes, they last forever,basicallyuntilthetoenailgrowsout,”Parrsaid. “They last through swimming, almost anything, and they don’t wear. All of my customers really, really like them. I’ve been working with Minx for nine months now and haven’t had a problem.”

“I absolutely love it,” she said. “I was so anxious to get my hot little hands on it that I went to Tulsa to pick it up. I’ve been doing Shellac since the ﬁrst of May.” Customer response is the same; they love it, she said. “They’re excited about it. They had some of the same concerns. They wanted to take care of natural nails and use a product that was reliable and researched and not damaging in any way.” While Shellac can be soaked off at home with acetone, most stylists recommend salon-applied individual removal wraps that cover the nail and limit ﬁnger and skin exposure to acetone. Like acrylics, OPI’s Axxium is removed by soaking nails in acetone. The thicker gel often requires more soaking time. Acrylics have been a main stay for women whose nails were thin and weak or who didn’t want to deal with polish that chipped quickly. Acrylics continue to be popular, but the nail industry anticipates women with natural nails coming to the salon for Minx, Shellac and Axxium — even if it’s just for special occasions or vacations. Lyric Theatre opens season with lively ‘Pump Boys’ I feel obliged to begin this review with a disclaimer: The homespun charms of “Pump Boys and Dinettes” completely elude me. The show, Lyric Theatre’s 2010 season opener, functions as theatrical sleight of hand in that it tries to create something out of precious little. A stretch of highway in North Carolina provides the setting for “Pump Boys and Dinettes,” a place where filling station attendants flirt with the women who run the nearby diner. It’s part “Petticoat Junction,” with Frog Level and Smyrna standinginforHootervilleandPixley, and part “Green Acres,” without the mock sophistication to balance the rural humor. The musical’s two dozen songs hang precariously on what director David Lutken calls a “tissue of a story.” Unlike more conventional musicals, “Pump Boys” avoids conflict and has virtually no character development. But because it doesn’t aspire to grandiose expectations or lofty goals, it’s more of a perfect advertisement for “what you see is what you get.” The cast of six is uniformly strong. The men — Lutken, Jon Brown, Eric Scott Anthony and Louis Tucci — double as musicians, playing piano, guitar

mandolin, banjo, string bass, harmonica and accordion with conviction. The women — Barb Schoenhofer and Sherry Stregack — wring every ounce of humor out of their roles as the diner’s sassy waitresses. The score is ﬁlled with solos, duets and full company numbers, each offering a look into the lives of people whose motto is “taking it slow.” As Jim (Lutken) explains, “Work won’t kill you, but worry will. Worry is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do, but it don’t get you nowhere.” The lively “Highway 57” serves as an introduction to the cast, while the “Menu Song” is a honky-tonk number that enumerates the diner’s specialties. Later, the women sing about the importance of “Tips” as they

single out unsuspecting audience members in hopes that someone is carrying around some spare change. The men display their fine close harmony skills in “Fisherman’s Prayer,” but the livelier “No Holds Barred” suffers from excessive amplification, rendering most of the lyrics unintelligible. Jim recalls the grief of losing his grandmother in “Mamaw,” while L.M. (Brown) explains that his “Farmer Tan” is the secret behind his character’s charms. If the girls tend to be a livelier group than their filling station pals, the latter often employ an “aw shucks” attitude that endears them to the audience. Amanda Foust’s set design vividly brings to life the ramshackle filling station and the spic-and-span diner. Jeffrey Meek’s costumes further underscore the contrast, with overalls for the men and neatly starched aprons for the women. As a folksy slice of life about six residents in rural North Carolina, Lyric’s “Pump Boys” succeeds thanks to Lutken’s sure-handed but never intrusive direction and a cast of pros whose keen understanding of the material celebrates the unvarnished joys of country living. — Rick Rogers

SEN. SCOTT BROWN’S WIFE LEAVING TV NEWS JOB The wife of U.S. Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts is leaving her longtime job as a Boston television news reporter and will be working at a Washington TV station. Gail Huff says she is stepping down from WCVB-TV to spend more time with her husband and their daughters, Ayla and Arianna. She calls it one of the most difficult decisions of her career. Huff says she has accepted a part-time reporting job at WJLA-TV in Washington and plans to split her time between the capital and the family’s Massachusetts home. Huff did not campaign for her husband and has avoided covering stories about him before and after his upset win in the January special election to succeed the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.
