verybody goes through growing pains. It’s as natural as a summer full of movie sequels and comic book adaptations. Let’s get one thing out of the way. The “Guardians” follow-up is every bit as boisterous, bonkers and polished as its 2014 counterpart, which I loved so much that I gave it a 4-star review. This follow-up is just less fun, and that’s a big deal. Sure, there’s plenty to like in “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2,” but I’ll use an Adam Sandler movie to illustrate a point. Why not? It’s about as random as the pop culture references in this Marvel movie. In “Billy Madison,” Sandler makes a bet that involves him going back through

elementary school and high school. There’s something gleefully weird about watching a man-child pelt his tiny classmates with dodge balls. When he tries similar jokes in high school, his doofy charm isn’t as warmly welcomed. That same dynamic is at play in outer space. A vocabulary-challenged tree (Vin Diesel), a feisty, foul-mouthed raccoon (Bradley Cooper), a reddish-gray rage monster (Dave Bautista), a green ninja (Zoe Saldana) and a lovable guy/celestial god nicknamed Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) run through a lot of the same plays that felt especially fresh three years ago but have lost a bit of luster. The original “Guardians” flick was so fun because it arrived seemingly out of left field and was ready to party. It simultaneously existed in the Marvel superhero world and lampooned
the serious tone of so many comic book adaptations. A bunch of heroes unknown to every day moviegoers outshone multiple Iron Mans and Captain Americas with spitball from the back of the classroom antics and a groovy soundtrack. Today, the first “Guardian” movie casts a big shadow. “GOTGV2” feels like the b-side to a really great album. It’s just fine on its own but gets caught up in CGI bombardment, a swollen runtime, repeated penis jokes and a weaker story. This sequel has a darker, meaner tone, and it doesn’t mesh as well as round one. For example, when the Guardians decimate a prison in the first go-round, it was pretty funny. When a space ship of goons is massacred in round two, it just feels plain nasty. Even the Awesome Mix concept could use some fresher tunes. Overused slow motion walking and diving can only carry a movie so far. Remove those scenes from “GOTGV2” and there’s not much to replace it. Also, one David Hasselhoff joke is too many. Still, I enjoyed spending time with these lovable losers, and this movie delivers a lot of laughs. Baby Groot alone is worth the price of admission, and Cat Stevens’ “Father and Son” remains as goose bumpy as ever. The team’s all here, there’s some new friends/fiends and a lot to visuals to soak in. I’m not counting the Guardians out, but I’m looking forward to round three offering some intergalactic course correction.

10 SUMMER 2017
MOVIE HIGHLIGHTS JUNE 2 Gal Gadot takes flight again as “Wonder Woman,” the role she first lassoed in 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which was the fourth installment in the planned DC Comics-based movie series spotlighting various superheroes and villains involved with the Justice League of America. Previous releases have been “Man of Steel” (2013), “Batman v Superman” (2016) and “Suicide Squad” (2016). “Justice League,” featuring several DC heroes, is due out later this year, with “Aquaman,” “Shazam” and “Green Lantern Corps” to follow through 2020. Other planned projects include “Dark Universe,” “Man of Steel” and “Justice League” sequels, “The Flash” and “The Batman,” to name a few. “Wonder Woman” is directed by Patty Jenkins from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns.
JUNE 9 “It Comes at Night” is quite a departure for writer-director Trey Edward Shults, from his critically lauded family drama, “Krisha” (2015), to this horror piece about a man, his wife and their son whose domestic security in their desolate home is shaken by an unnatural threat that terrorizes the world, and the arrival of a desperate young family seeking refuge with them as outside horrors creep closer, awakening something monstrous within the head of the household. Stars are Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott, Riley Keough, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Carmen Ejogo.
JUNE 16 Henry Carpenter (Jaeden Lieberher) is small, but he’s a crafty 11-year-old tasked with taking care of his single suburban mother, Susan Carpenter (Naomi Watts), and his younger brother, Peter (Jacob Tremblay). Taking care of everyone and everything in his own unique way is Susan’s older son, Henry (Jaeden

Lieberher). “The Book of Henry” follows this tiny, tireless supporter of his often selfdoubting mother and unravels the secret Henry’s kind classmate, Christina (Maddie Ziegler), is hiding. As his brainstormed rescue plan for Christina takes shape in thrilling ways, Susan finds herself at the center of it. Colin Trevorrow (“Jurassic World,” “Safety Not Guaranteed”) directs the thrilling effort. (Limited release)
JUNE 21 “Transformers: The Last Knight” is the fifth — and director Michael Bay swears it’s the last — installment in the sci-fi action series based on the toy line created by Hasbro. The story thus far: In the absence of Optimus Prime, war has broken out between the human race and the Transformers. To save the world, Cade Yeager forms an alliance with Bumblebee (a robot which transforms into a cool custom Camaro), and an English lord and an Oxford professor to learn why the Transformers keep returning to Earth. See the first four films if all this makes no sense.
JULY 7 Tom Holland dons the red and blue tights and the title role in the second reboot of the Marvel Comics movie series starring everybody’s favorite webslinging teen, “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Robert Downey Jr. makes a guest appearance as Spidey’s new superhero acquaintance, Iron Man, and Michael Keaton turns vicious as Vulture, the latest villain to darken Spider-Man’s day. Jon Watts (“Cop Car”) directs from a script he co-wrote with five other guys, which doesn’t bode well when a screenplay needs so many cooks. This film follows up “Captain America: Civil War,” in which Holland first appeared as Spidey.

JULY 14
JULY 28
“War for the Planet of the Apes” is the third entry in the reboot series that began with “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011) and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (2014), all inspired by the original ”Planet of the Apes” (1968) that was co-written by Rod Serling. The 21st-century re-imagining of the tale centers on a race of apes possessing superior intelligence unintentionally created by human experimentation. Caesar (Andy Serkis) is a noble and intelligent chimpanzee who leads a tribe of genetically enhanced apes forced into battle with an army of humans led by a ruthless colonel (Woody Harrelson). Matt Reeves directs from a script he co-wrote with Mark Bomback.
Charlize Theron is the “Atomic Blonde” in director David Leitch’s Cold War thriller about an undercover MI6 agent who is sent to Berlin to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents. Kurt Johnstad’s screenplay is based on a graphic novel by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart. A decade after he sounded the alarm about global warming with “An Inconvenient Truth,” Al Gore is back with “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power,” a follow-up documentary that demonstrates just how close we are to a real energy revolution. Barack Obama and Donald J. Trump also make appearances in the film.
AUG. 11 JULY 21 Christopher Nolan writes and directs the epic action thriller “Dunkirk,” in which allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, Canada and France are surrounded by the German army and evacuated during a ferocious battle in World War II. Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and Mark Rylance star.
Writer-director Edgar Wright (“Shaun of the Dead,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”) turns Ansel Elgort (“Allegiant,” “Insurgent,” etc.) loose behind the wheel in “Baby Driver,” a crime thriller about a young getaway ace who’s pushed into participating in a heist doomed for disaster. He’s aided and abetted by a smoking supporting cast including Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx — and a musical soundtrack that really rocks.

TIP TOP HOP JAM Hanson’s beer, music festival finds a groove during busy weekend
BY BECKY CARMAN | For LOOKatOKC
I
’m not a festival person. By that, I mean the crowds, the chaos, the parking, the sheer length of time people stand outdoors in a constant barrage of smells and sounds. I once watched a row of portable bathrooms catch fire, the resulting plume of black smoke curling through the sky behind the stage. None of that is for me. On the other side of my first Hop Jam — the recent craft beer and music festival founded by Tulsa pop-rock band

Hanson four years ago — I’m happy to report I might’ve met my festival match. In the vein of Nathan Poppe’s Hop Jam recap from last year, here are a few observations from the fest’s fourth edition:
1.
When I spoke with Taylor Hanson before this year’s Hop Jam, he said the festival had no specific inspirations, only that they wanted it to be “world-class,” of the caliber of other festival events with longevity like Coachella and

HOP JAM CONTINUED FROM 10 Bonnaroo. Hop Jam is tiny by comparison, and that works to its advantage. I arrived shortly before the official public start time of 3 p.m. to see a line from the craft beer area stretching all the way to the main stage at the other end of the festival. But only a short time later, everyone had gotten where they needed to go, in a shockingly orderly fashion. I revel in that level of organization. (Hanson bingo: I spotted all three brothers at different times, carrying radios and appearing to deal with various festival management ins and outs.)
2.
Sixty-five breweries is a lot of breweries. Ticketed beer patrons were given a small Hop Jam tasting cup on a detachable lanyard, and word has it the Alcoholic Beverage Laws Enforcement Commission was out and about watching the size of the beer vendors’ pours. SEE HOP JAM, 12

Hop Jam featured more than 200 different beers and 65 different breweries participating, from Oklahoma and all across the country. From left, Alex Gardner and Lucas Dewell pour beer on behalf of Marshall Brewing Co.
HOP JAM CONTINUED FROM 11 That’s probably for the better, since theoretically, one could sample 200-plus types of beer in the five-hour tasting window, were he or she methodical about it. (I did not do this. But for the record, my favorite new beer I tried was the Anderson Valley G&T Gose.) Taylor Hanson noted that many of the craft breweries they contact for the festival are only now looking into distributing their goods in Oklahoma due to the industry’s brief tenure here. Hopefully Hop Jam proves the existing market for them.
3.
When you’re standing in a parking lot for three hours, 76 degrees might as well be 90.
4.
Props to whomever is curating the Hop Jam main stage lineup. It’s a healthy mix of local talent (this year’s Oklahoma artists were Count Tutu, John Fullbright and Johnny Polygon) and national acts. This year’s offerings, South African alt-rock band KONGOS and neosoul act Mayer Hawthorne, are famous enough to draw a crowd and polished enough to entertain festivalgoers unfamiliar with their music.

Hanson fans love Hanson. Hop Jam fell on the fourth day of a long Hanson.net member weekend, where “fansons” from across the country flock to Tulsa to participate in a number of private events, including a Hansonopoly tournament, karaoke and a concert only available to fan club members. Even though their Hanson cups had runneth over at this point (just kidding, ABLE!), dozens of dedicated fans parked it in front of the main stage hours before the music actually started, in order to get a prime spot for Hanson’s headlining set over five hours later. Hop Jam drew an impressive crowd on May 21 when downtown Tulsa had at least two other concurrent festivals nearby. Despite a sanctioned five-hour drinking session for many attendees, the crowds remained fairly tame, and many of last year’s complaints about long lines seem more or less resolved. As Hop Jam continues, it’ll be interesting to see how and if the festival affect the craft beer industry in Tulsa and elsewhere in the state, and whether it takes on a life more its own and less connected to Hanson, the band.

on’t let the tough name fool you. Sam Outlaw has a knack for exploring the softer side of country music and can bring out the sweetheart in anyone. The Los Angeles basedsongwriter performed in Norman last December and was approached by a man he thought was a bouncer at The Deli. The guy needed to make a quick announcement to the bar. “I thought he’d say, ‘Hey, somebody’s car is parked out front and is about to get towed.’ Then he asked a woman to marry him,” Outlaw told LOOKatOKC. “It was so funny, and
the bartender told us later that night the lady he’d asked to marry him accepted. She’d just gotten divorced that morning.” Outlaw’s May 10 concert date at The Blue Door was just as eventful. A thunderstorm knocked out power and kicked on the fire alarm. Once things calmed down, the band continued the concert and performed acoustic renditions in the crowd. SAM CONTINUED FROM 14 Nor is he afraid to test the waters and make a sensitive record under such a gruff-sounding name. His sophomore effort “Tenderheart” landed April 14, and it contains a few honky tonk numbers but also succeeds in its softer offerings. The record is a mashup of Southern California charm and a testament to beautiful songwriting. “I was drawing a lot of influences from rock ‘n’ roll like Tom Petty and Linda Ronstadt,” Outlaw said. “I’m a huge fan of Bryan Adams with a ‘B’ so you know I wasn’t afraid to add some extra guitar stuff and bigger sounding vocals and harmonies. ... Some of the early reviews have been incredibly kind, especially in the U.K. and in Australia. People are getting it, and they’re digging it and no one’s doing the like, this isn’t country enough.” I caught up with Outlaw while he was relaxing with his 11-month old son in California. The younger outlaw was cooing in between questions. Here’s some highlights from our chat.
Q:
I got choked up watching the music video for “Everyone’s Looking For Home.” I liked the way it blended footage of your family with life on the road. What was it like to see that balance played out so literally?
LOOKATOKC.COM
Sam Outlaw: When I was sent the first cut, I started crying in my living room. When I came up with the idea for this video, I knew it was important to not seem emotionally manipulative. Not seem like we’re trying to like get people to cry or trying to make me seem like some rock star or this devout family man. I didn’t want to come off as though I’m trying to run for mayor or something. It’s just real. Like literal, real footage of tour and literal, real home videos of being home. It definitely got to me, and it still does.
Q:
Is it easy for you to write on the road or does a majority of that happen back at home? Outlaw: I still rely on the bolt of lightning technique for coming up with new songs. It’s a mix. I’ll be home, and I’ll be taking a shower and a song pops in my head. I’ll be on the road, and we’ll be getting gas and all of a sudden something pops in my head. I’m not the guy where I sit down, and now I’m going to write a song from scratch. Being on the road is stressful and exhausting, kind of to the point where it’s not like you have a ton of emotional batteries charged to be able to sit down and write something that you feel is honest and hopefully good.
Q:
Your home base is brought up prominently in almost everything I’ve read about you. Has your time in California shaped your music that much, or is it the people?
M U S I C F E AT U R E
Outlaw: If it is the people, then it’s almost like maybe the ghosts of the past a little bit, more than it is even kind of like the future. I’m not spending a lot of time at the hip SOHO club in West Hollywood and, you know, shoulder to shoulder with millennial celebrities for anything. I think there’s a sense of people trying to achieve their dreams and follow their dreams in LA. Obviously it’s a movie town. It’s not really a music town; it’s a movie town. So, I think that distinction plays into the songs because it gives you a sense of hope mixed with loss. I hope that people will look it up and learn the history of California and the history of LA country rock that was birthed in Los Angeles. That is a uniquely Los Angeles creation. Sounds like Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds and guys like Gram Parsons came out here and were the first people to infuse country influences with rock ‘n’ roll. ... If they somehow have never heard of Merle Haggard, I hope that they’ll look him up and get into his music, and if they’ve somehow never heard of Graham Parsons, I hope they’ll discover him; or if they’ve somehow never heard of Desert Rose Band and Chris Hillman, then I hope they’ll find that music and fall in love with it the way I have.
Q:
You quit a comfortable job in the advertising world to pursue music full-time. Have you learned anything during that transition? Outlaw: You gotta believe in yourself. ... If your happiness is attached to what other people say about you, then you’ll quickly realize how disposable that is. Ultimately, you’ve gotta think what you’re doing is good because you have to believe in yourself about 150 percent to get the rest of the world to 80 percent. It’s fascinating to watch this all play out, and so I’m eternally grateful for the fact I get to do this for my life.
Q:
How’d your mom feel about you adopting her maiden name with your stage name? Outlaw: My mom passed away a few years ago, but I was already using the name when she was still alive. I think she thought it was really cool, actually. She was vocally supportive of me doing music. I mean typical mother style, she would have supported me if I wanted to be a professional juggler. Fortunately, the Outlaw family have been very kind and supportive, and my mom, I think she’s probably still up there somewhere cheering me on. I’m very lucky to have the support of our family, and no one in the Morgan family seems to be bothered that I didn’t use that name.

Mason repeatedly has carried out similar transformations since we first met a decade ago. It was in 2007 that Mason invited me to tour some buildings along the 1000 block of N Broadway that had been largely vacant for decades. His plans for the century-old car dealership buildings excited me. His original plan included reopening his Iguana Mexican Grill at a renovated one-story building at 1007 N Broadway. He was
uncertain, however, how to provide the restaurant with parking, so he proceeded to buy some blighted properties to the east on NW 9. It is no secret I am passionate about historic architecture. But I saw no reason to save the old brick garage or three dilapidated homes on Mason’s block. I was surprised when Mason revealed he was going to save the buildings and move the Iguana to the old garage. Over the next couple of years Mason not only pulled off a successful redevelopment of the block, but also filled the spaces with a mix of tenants that continue to be a part of the downtown renaissance. Mason, joined by frequent partner Aimee Ahpeatone, then moved on to the Plaza District where he redeveloped another worn-out set of storefronts and created yet another mix of restaurants and shops. And the list goes on with Mason buying the Yale Theater in Capitol Hill and starting renovations to turn it into an event venue. He already has indicated he is just getting started in Capitol Hill, and looking at the availability of neglected gems by the old Penn Theater, one must wonder what is next for this soft-spoken urban dreamer.

Mother’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year for Sunday brunch, meaning big crowds at restaurants throughout the city. The extra business barely registered at Cafe Kacao, 3325 N Classen Blvd., since lines that stretch out the front door are the norm weekend mornings at the little Guatemalan cafe in the heart of the Asian district. And now that it’s added dinner service, those lines reaching for Classen Boulevard might appear around the clock. But while many folks would be trying to get to Cafe Kacao early, none of them would get there as early as Alex and Luidgi Del Cid’s mother, Veronica Zelada. The Del Cid brothers own Cafe Kacao with their mother, who is also the chef.
Zelada never went to culinary school, but few chefs have worked as hard or faced as many obstacles to earn the title. And, for my money, no chef in town consistently delivers a breakfast equal parts delicious and gorgeous than chef Zelada.
GETTING SETTLED Zelada arrived in Oklahoma City from California almost two decades ago with three children in tow. When she arrived at the home of a cousin whom she’d thought offered a place to stay, Zelada was turned away. “This cousin closed the door in my mother’s face,” Alex Del Cid recalled of the moment he and his family arrived in town. “We had to sleep in SEE HOT, 21

our car that night.” Del Cid said his family’s short-term home was a room in an economy hotel while his mother looked for work. Eventually, she found employment in a pair of local kitchens working breakfast shifts at Jimmy’s Egg and dinner at Cheesecake Factory. “She was always doing whatever was necessary to support us,” Luidgi Del Cid said. “If she had to be working two jobs or doing janitorial work at our elementary school — drive the school bus, she did it.” But Zelada’s move to Oklahoma wasn’t the first time she’d had to take a long trip for the betterment of her family. “When she was pregnant with Luidgi, my mother was told by the doctor there could be a problem,” Alex Del Cid explained. “There was a fear that she could lose her life, and because she was worried if she died there might be complications getting her body returned home, she decided to return to Guatemala.” Once her youngest was born, Zelada faced the long, arduous task of making her way back to the family. It took at least one tearful plea before a Mexican consulate to get her back with young Alex and middle sister Ana Iris, who now lives in upstate New York with Zelada’s only grandson, Jackson. So working two jobs to raise three children didn’t seem like such a challenge to Zelada, who, despite all she’d faced and had on her plate, was unafraid to dream about opening a place of her own. “She told me many times, I’m afraid. I’m nervous about doing this, but we’re doing it anyway.” The proof is in the narrative. Zelada opened Cafe Antigua in 2004 but struggled to find her footing. Friend

and went back to the drawing board. Just like every other time life appeared to have Zelada cornered, she held fast to what she had and patiently waited for wisdom to build and opportunity to knock.
DINNER BELL RINGS AGAIN In the interim, the Del Cid brothers made dramatic improvements to the dining room, installing a coffee bar for their exquisite Eote coffee and tropical smoothie service. Libations are in the plans, but the
family has decided to wait for the new liquor laws to go into effect before applying for a license. They’ve also hired Larry Dean Pickering to build them a new sign and patio that will extend out from the west. Perhaps the most important thing they’ve done in the past six years is to invest in an outstanding staff. Cafe Kacao boasts a loyal, knowledgeable staff who can talk guests through any dish, no matter how poorly your attempt at pronouncing, “Motuleno.” SEE HOT, 23

HOT CONTINUED FROM 22 Zelada has written a menu for dinner that expresses not only her culture but the inspiration she’s drawn from throughout Latin America. “My mother is an amazing chef,” Luidgi Del Cid said. “She has hundreds of menus in her head. For this one, she wanted to represent more than just Guatemala.” Cuba, Venezuela, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico are all well-represented on the new menu, which also includes the breakfast favorites that put the restaurant on the map. The dinner menu includes five appetizers that will prove so difficult to choose between, I’ve already imagined a dinner composed of all of them and some empty plates for sharing. Zelada delivers an authentic incarnation of the classic Mexican dish Queso Fundido with some flourishes of her own: roasted peppers, creamy goat cheese and balsamic vinegar. The Tostones Rellenos are unique to Oklahoma but Del Cid says they represent a common bit of culture from Central and South American countries. “In places where they don’t make tortillas, you’ll see fried plantains used for dipping and to carry toppings.” Plantains are pounded out and deep fried then topped with either guacamole and shrimp mojo (marinated) or picadillo (seasoned ground beef) and tomato. A spicy mayonnaise accompanies both. They arrive looking like Indian tacos that will fit in the palm of your hand and taste like the inspiration of a food truck armada. Zelada’s version of ceviche includes shrimp served on the rim of a bowl filled with white fish prepared in lime juice and pepper sauce, along with onions, cilantro and avocado. At the bottom is a bed of chilled rice that soaks up all that tasty marinade and adds welcome texture. Empanadas are made of blue corn and stuffed with fried pork and cheese and served with ranchero sauce. I’ve had a chance to try four of the

10 new entrees, and was blown away at the evolution of Zelada’s skills since she first opened Cafe Antigua. All of the entrees come with some combination of black beans, fried plantains and rice — often topped by a fried egg (Rice al Caballo). House-made blue corn tortillas also are standard to promote sopping and swiping of residual splashes and bits. Churarasco Chapin is a 12-ounce rib-eye topped with chimichurri butter bound to satisfy big appetites no matter how discerning the palate. Vaca Frita is a dish inspired by Cuban cuisine, Del Cid said. Mojo-marinated beef is slow-roasted then quick-fried to ensure crunchy tips. Cochinita Pibil is a classic dish from Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Pork marinated in citrus juices and guajillo chile is slow-cooked and pulled apart then served a rich sauce. Zelada’s version of Carne Adovada includes a fried pork steak covered in adobo sauce. Frijolada is common to Colombia. It starts with a bed of beans and rice topped with choice of chicken, grilled steak, pork cooked in red chile and pineapple or shrimp. The dish is finished with tomato, onions, escabeche and a fried egg. I sampled the picadillo and look forward to enjoying a full portion. Also on the dinner menu is a taco plate and chicken burrito with cream sauce. Among the sides is a terrific riff on elote, deep-fried yucca fries, and Papas Cobaneros (potatoes smothered in Guatemalan chile sauce). Asked what they’d say to their mother when they got to the restaurant on Mother’s Day, both brothers said they would thank her and tell her they loved her. But Alex had one other thing to say. “She has always put us in front of everything. She’s done all these things so we would have a chance at a good life. And of course I thank her for that,” Alex said. “But I’d also like to say, ‘Congratulations. This is what you worked so hard for, and you’ve accomplished it. Not everyone does that. So, congratulations.’ ” If you happen by Cafe Kacao soon for dinner or are among the crowd on a Sunday, you might echo that sentiment to chef Veronica Zelada yourself.

Spaghetti Warehouse building secured as ownership structure is revealed BY STEVE LACKMEYER For LOOKatOKC
A
national investment group that owns Spaghetti Warehouse in Bricktown secured the empty landmark in May, narrowly averting an abandoned building declaration by the Oklahoma City Council. The threatened action against the property owner, VEREIT, would have given the real estate investment trust two weeks to act or face being charged for all ensuing police and fire responses to the building. Instead, the firm was able to get the property inspected and avoid the enforcement action. Kristy Yeager, city spokeswoman, said the owners have pledged to have a contractor check the building for openings every two weeks. The future of the property, meanwhile, remains uncertain. The restaurant closed in early 2016. The identity of the building’s ownership has been a bit of a mystery to locals for years who could only track the building to a Phoenix entity, USRP Funding, which according to assessor records shared an address with another entity, Cole Capital. Developers who have attempted to buy the property have reported the owners were based in New York, though other contacts have been located in Chicago and Dallas. A representative for VEREIT confirmed the real estate investment trust owns the closed Bricktown Spaghetti Warehouse. The investment group also owns the Spaghetti Warehouse in Tulsa that closed in March.
OTHER HOLDINGS No further questions were answered, but the webpage for the investment trust shows it has 79 properties throughout Oklahoma, including several CVS, Dollar General and Family Dollar Stores. The group also owns the AAA headquarters in northwest Oklahoma City, multiple Red Lobster and Olive Garden restaurants, and fast food properties throughout the metro area. Nationwide, the trust lists 4,105 properties in its portfolio worth $15.4 billion. The holdings are

scattered across 49 states, Puerto Rico and Ontario. VEREIT has several regional headquarters, including one in New York and a corporate headquarters in Phoenix. The trust is led by CEO Glenn Rufrano, who took over the trust after an accounting scandal involving its former executives when the company was known as American Realty Capital Properties. Bloomberg News reported in September the company’s former chief financial officer, Brian Block, was arrested and charged with helping orchestrate an accounting fraud that led to a $4 billion drop in the firm’s market value in 2014. The company’s former chief accounting officer, Lisa
McAlister, pleaded guilty to charges in the case in June. News releases show Rufrano took over in 2015 and promised to sell up to $2.2 billion in assets by the end of 2016. At least three local developers have sought to buy the Bricktown property but have indicated VEREIT has been unresponsive to their offers. The Spaghetti Warehouse in Bricktown until the evening of May 15 had open windows throughout the building. It still has buckling wood floors and extensive pigeon waste and other issues that likely would prevent any restaurant from reopening without an extensive renovation.

7 : 3 0 P. M . J U LY 1 5 For the first time in 20 years, Garth Brooks is planning an Oklahoma City concert. The Oklahoma native and Country Music Hall of Famer announced that his “The Garth Brooks World Tour with Trisha Yearwood” will play at 7:30 p.m. July 15 at Chesapeake Energy Arena, 100 W Reno. As the countdown toward the end of the former Owasso resident’s North American trek begins, this will be the last Oklahoma appearance on the world tour, according to a news release. Brooks, who was born in Tulsa and raised in Yukon, played Tulsa’s BOK Center in January 2015, early in his three-year domestic comeback tour, which confirmed Garth Brooks [PHOTO PROVIDED BY JEREMY COWART] the end of 13 years in semiretirement while he raised his three daughters. The Oklahoma State University graduate said in a 2015 Tulsa news conference that he got a big confidence booster to launch his world tour when he played Toby Keith’s 2013 Oklahoma Twister Relief Concert at the University of Oklahoma before a record-setting crowd that amazed him with its loud devotion. About a year later, he announced that his comeback had officially begun. “They sang like an arena show. Getting a stadium to sing like an arena is impossible. They sang like it was arena, and they made you feel like you had control and touch with everybody, even the furthest away. That gave me great confidence to go, ‘Hey, maybe we can tour again,’ “ he recalled two years ago at his Tulsa news conference. Since he had played the 2013 benefit concert, Brooks said in the 2015 news conference that Oklahoma City moved to the back of the line on his world tour stops — but confirmed that he planned on bringing his comeback to OKC in the next year or two. OKC tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. June 2. There will be an eight-ticket limit per purchase. Tickets can only be purchased at ticketmaster.com/garthbrooks or ticketmaster.com or by phone at either 800-745-3000 or via Ticketmaster Express at 866-448-7849. Please note there will be no ticket sales at the venue box office or Ticketmaster outlets on Friday. Tickets will cost $60.65, plus a $5.08 tax, a $3 facility fee and a $6.25 service charge, for a total of $74.98. All seats sold are best available.
