MISSION The mission of the Handel and Haydn Society is to enrich life and influence culture by performing Baroque and Classical music at the highest levels of artistic excellence, and by providing engaging, accessible, and broadly inclusive music education and training activities. H+H’s Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus present live and recorded historically informed performances of this repertoire in ways that stimulate the musical and cultural development of our Greater Boston community and contemporary audiences across the nation and beyond.

CORE COMMITMENTS • As a performing arts organization of the 21st century, H+H’s primary roles are to perform and educate while serving as a resource center and community partner. • Learning opportunities throughout all of H+H’s activities enrich audience experiences, help bridge the gulf between performers and audience, and foster a healthy, vibrant local environment for the performance of historically informed music. • Excellent historically informed interpretations transform how audiences experience Baroque and Classical music. • Creativity, inclusiveness, and accessibility are vital to sustaining H+H as a thriving nonprofit — a Boston-based performing arts organization that attracts a broad, global audience.

2  HANDEL + HAYDN SOCIETY

June 30, 2015

DEAR FRIENDS, The 200th season of the Handel and Haydn Society was one of the most memorable in recent years. From the launch of the season and the public phase of the Instrumental Voices Campaign on October 10, to the opening of the Bicentennial Exhibition in March 2015, to the glorious music of Handel + Haydn Sings in connection with the Chorus America Conference in June 2015, the 2014–2015 Bicentennial Season created an amazing celebratory platform for the 200th anniversary of H+H. It also served as an exciting opportunity to reconnect the organization to its roots, to honor the legacy of its founders, and to celebrate the great City of Boston and its people, rejoicing in 200 years of great music and innovative programs. Exceptional talent graced our stage: H+H Concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky and Richard Egarr led our talented and committed musicians in programs ranging from Bach to Beethoven; our youth choirs sang with pride from the stage of Symphony Hall; Harry Christophers conducted an historic and majestic Messiah; guest conductor Grant Llewellyn led a fresh Elijah; several of our chorus members were featured as soloists; and we offered a deeply moving performance of Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion — a work H+H premiered in the US in 1879. Under Harry’s guidance, H+H celebrated its Bicentennial in peak artistic shape, and the critics have become more and more effusive in their praises. In addition to its distinguished record of artistic excellence, another remarkable quality of H+H is the vigor of its education and community programs — which include all the activities beyond its busy life of concerts, tours, and recordings. H+H’s far-reaching initiatives to cultivate young musicians and new audiences — along with its friendly openness to the larger cultural community — offer outstanding models for other arts organizations. We are especially proud of how our school residencies at Boston’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School, the Joseph Lee School in Dorchester, and the Michael J. Perkins School in South Boston, have transformed the ways in which music education and choral programs are provided for students living in underserved communities. This past season H+H continued to forge an impressive community presence and build strength towards achieving the goals set out in 2012-2017 Strategic Plan. With a budget of over $5 million, an endowment of over $7.5 million, and total assets approaching $13 million, H+H is on solid financial footing. After the public launch of its $12 million campaign in October, H+H has closed its most recent chapter achieving a milestone of $11 million in the campaign by the end of June. True to its legacy, H+H’s operating philosophy remains committed to growth with purpose. The essence of H+H today is no different from when it was founded in 1815: it is to foster a better community. Thanks to the commitment and trust of our audiences, gifted musicians, dedicated staff, Board, and patrons, H+H continues to enrich the lives of Boston’s citizens through vibrant musical performances. With age comes tremendous strength — and this was recognized by Boston Magazine in its recent Best of Boston® issue: “The Handel and Haydn Society is not only the oldest continuously performing arts group in America, it’s also one of the best.”

After over eight years at the helm of H+H, Marie-Hélène is leaving to embrace new challenges at the St. Louis Symphony and we thank her for her leadership. As we look back on a year of unprecedented success, we are deeply grateful for the continued support of our community and we look forward to a bright future.

THE HANDEL AND HAYDN SOCIETY Founded in Boston in 1815, the Handel and Haydn Society (H+H) is considered America’s oldest continuously performing arts organization. It celebrates its Bicentennial in 2015 with a series of special concerts and initiatives to honor 200 years of music making. Its Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus are internationally recognized in the field of Historically Informed Performance, using the instruments and techniques of the composer’s time. Under Artistic Director Harry Christophers’ leadership, H+H’s mission is to enrich life and influence culture by performing Baroque and Classical music at the highest levels of artistic excellence, and by providing engaging, accessible, and broadly inclusive music education and training activities. H+H’s Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus present live and recorded historically informed performances of this repertoire in ways that stimulate the musical and cultural development of our Greater Boston community and contemporary audiences across the nation and beyond. H+H’s esteemed tradition of innovation and excellence began in the 19th century with the US premieres of Handel’s Messiah (1818), Haydn’s Creation (1819), and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (1879). In 1967, Artistic Director Thomas Dunn transformed the chorus into a small, expert ensemble, and in 1986, Christopher

4  HANDEL + HAYDN SOCIETY

Hogwood became Artistic Director and added period instrument performances. Music Director Grant Llewellyn (2001–2006) and Artistic Advisor Sir Roger Norrington (2006–2008) continued this tradition, as Harry Christophers, appointed in 2008, does today. H+H is widely known through its concert series, tours, 99.5 WCRB, NPR, and American Public Media broadcasts and recordings. Its nine-program series, held at Symphony and Jordan Halls in Boston and Sanders Theatre in Cambridge, reaches nearly 3,000 subscribers and over 18,000 single ticket attendees from throughout New England and beyond. It is one of only two music organizations in New England to regularly feature international guest conductors and soloists, and the only period ensemble in America to present a full-season series at a venue as large as Symphony Hall. It employs the region’s finest period instrument players and singers, including many who represent the next generation of leading artists. Earlier this year, The New Yorker affirmed, “American classical music launched in earnest” at H+H 200 years ago, and the organization is still a “steady heartbeat for classical music in this country.” H+H has also recently been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The Boston Globe, and

Gramophone (UK). In 2011, The Hub Review (Boston) dubbed H+H “the best chorus in New England.” H+H made its European debut in 1996 at the Edinburgh International Festival with a fully staged production of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice with the Mark Morris Dance Group. Recent tours have taken H+H to the Haydn Festival in Esterházy, Austria, in 2006; to the BBC Proms Festival, London with Haydn’s Seasons, which the London Telegraph named one of the top musical events of 2007; and to Cal Performances in Berkeley and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California, with Handel’s Jephtha in 2013. Over the past 20 years, H+H has presented interdisciplinary programs featuring dance, opera, jazz, and theater; collaborators have included the Mark Morris Dance Group, Chinese stage director Chen Shi-Zheng, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, and David McCullough. H+H won a Grammy award in 2003 for its recording of Tavener’s Lamentations and Praises, co-commissioned with Chanticleer, and in 2005, had two recordings on the Billboard top 10 classical music chart. Since its first recording collaboration with Harry Christophers on the CORO label, released in September 2010, it has issued three live commercial recordings of works by Mozart — Mass in C Minor (2010), Requiem (2011), and Coronation Mass (2012) — as well as the critically acclaimed

Haydn, Vol. 1 (September 2013) and the best-selling Joy to the World: An American Christmas (October 2013). Timed expressly for the Bicentennial, Handel’s Messiah, recorded live under the direction of Harry Christophers at Boston’s Symphony Hall, will be released in October 2014 on the CORO label. A recording of Haydn’s Creation is planned for release in 2015, also on CORO. As a 21st-century performing arts organization, H+H’s primary roles are to perform and educate, and to serve as a community partner and resource center. Its Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program, established in 1985, reaches 10,000 children each year through public school visits and chorus partnerships, in-school music instruction, five youth choruses, and pre-professional vocal training. H+H also maintains partnerships with cultural and higher education institutions, offers college students opportunities to learn about and develop mastery in Baroque and Classical music, and offers youth and adult education opportunities that include free concerts and lectures at libraries, community centers, and museums.

The Handel and Haydn Society is supported in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, and by the National Endowment for the Arts.

2014 – 2015 SEASON ANNUAL REPORT   5

The 2014-2015 Bicentennial Season showcased H+H’s continued artistic excellence under the direction of Harry Christophers, now in his sixth season as Artistic Director. The season began on October 12 and 14, 2014 with the festive Baroque Fireworks, which honored H+H’s past, kicked off the Bicentennial, and marked the public launch of the Instrumental Voices capital campaign. Celebratory cupcakes were served to the audience, and a sing-along finale of H+H’s signature work, Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, ended the program. Harry Christophers and the period instrument orchestra and chorus concluded the season on June 18, 2015 with a program in conjunction with the Chorus America conference that included the world premiere of the H+H co-commission of Gabriela Lena Frank’s My Angel, his name is freedom, based on the text of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Boston Hymn.” The 200th season included concerts at Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, and Faneuil Hall’s Great Hall among its 22 subscription performances. Beyond Boston, H+H continued increasing its presence with concerts in Needham, MA; Portsmouth, NH; and Williamsburg, VA. The season also featured the beginning of a multiyear partnership with the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. H+H performed J.S. Bach’s complete Brandenburg Concertos at the Gardner in December 2014, co-led by concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky and Resident Conductor Ian Watson, and offered a vocal and instrumental program of Albinoni, J.S. Bach, Byrd, and Vivaldi in March 2015 led by Ian Watson. Other season highlights included: • 26 concerts in Greater Boston. (Venues included the Boston Athenæum, Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, Boston Summer Arts Weekend Festival co-produced by WGBH and The Boston Globe, the Concord Museum, King’s Chapel, the James

Fifteen of the pieces were selected for display at the performances of The Creation in May. • Performances by students from H+H’s Vocal Arts Program (VAP) Young Women’s Chamber Choir and Young Men’s Chorus on Baroque Fireworks (October 2014), J.S. Bach St. Matthew Passion (March 2015), and Handel and Haydn Sings (June 2015). • Nearly 28,000 tickets (15,000 subscriber tickets and 13,000 single tickets) were sold, almost a 4.5% increase over the previous season. • A youthful audience, with 30% between 18-44 years old. • Well over 6,000 people connected to H+H through lectures, chamber concert activities in non-traditional venues, and free access to performances at Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, and other venues in Greater Boston. • The Heartstrings program, through which H+H offered 3,764 free and discounted concert tickets to public school students, education program families, and other underserved communities who would not otherwise attend a performance. Key partners included the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, Boston Trinity Academy, Boston Rescue Mission, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Hearth-Home, and MassMentoring.

KAREN S. AND GEORGE D. LEVY EDUCATION PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS IN-SCHOOL PERFORMANCES Handel and Haydn Society’s professional Vocal Quartet and pianist presented 62 free performances of Voices of the Stage at no cost to 46 public schools in the Greater Boston area. In addition, the Quartet participated in WGBH’s annual Classical Cartoon Festival at Symphony Hall in October 2014, and performed at the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center in February 2015. Sarah Moyer, soprano, and Christina English, mezzo-soprano, joined the quartet in September 2014. SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS H+H continued to forge ahead to sustain its commitment to making music education accessible to students in the Boston schools. One new program, at Mother Caroline Academy in Dorchester, led by H+H soprano and music educator Sonja Dutoit Tengblad, provides weekly vocal music instruction to students in grades 4-6. This year, H+H received its first grant from EdVestors, which led to the implementation of a singing and music literacy program at the Michael J. Perkins Elementary School in South Boston for students in Kindergarten and grade 1, under the direction of music educator Seychelle Dunn. The program is modeled after the curriculum H+H developed for the John F. Kennedy program in Jamaica Plain, which currently serves all students in Kindergarten– grade 2. This program is led by H+H soprano and music educator, Jennifer Ashe. Upcoming expansion goals include adding grade 2 to the Perkins School Program, and grade 3 to the Kennedy School program. Both programs provide sequential weekly music instruction to students in those grades during the school day as

8  HANDEL + HAYDN SOCIETY

part of the core curriculum for the entire academic year. H+H continues to support a growing after-school music program at the Joseph E. Lee K–8 School in Dorchester. This program serves students in grades 2–4, and is led by Sonja Dutoit Tengblad. COLLABORATIVE YOUTH CONCERTS Collaborative Youth Concerts completed its 28th year during the 2014–2015 Bicentennial Season. Since 1987, high school choruses from Belmont, Boston, Brockton, Danvers, Lawrence, Lynn, New Bedford, Newton, and North Quincy have performed masterpieces by Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Purcell, Schubert, and Vivaldi with H&H’s Period Instrument Orchestra and vocal soloists. This season, 406 students representing the choruses from Boston Arts Academy, Boston Latin School, Brockton High School, Lawrence High School for the Performing Arts, Lynn Classical and English High Schools, Norwood High School and Peabody High School gave performances of Haydn’s Missa Brevis Sti. Johannis de Deo and a chorus from Handel’s Chandos Anthem No. 7 My Song Shall Be Alway with the Educational Outreach Vocal Quartet members of the H+H Period Instrument Orchestra under the direction of guest conductor Lisa Graham. The concerts took place on February 4 at Norwood High School, February 10 at Boston Latin School, March 12 at Lawrence High School. Approximately 60 singers representing the participating high schools opened the Mozart and Beethoven Concert on February 14 with two movements from the Missa Brevis at Jordan Hall.

BICENTENNIAL

200 years of bringing music to life The 2014-2015 Bicentennial Season marked an important milestone for H+H as it celebrated its 200th anniversary through a variety of programs, projects, and events received to critical acclaim. Several exclusive partners joined in the celebration, including: The Boston Foundation, The Boston Globe, Boston Private, Catered Affair, The Parthenon Group, Plymouth Rock Foundation, Ropes & Gray, and WCRB. Mayor Martin J. Walsh declared March 24, 2015 “Handel and Haydn Society Day” in Boston, honoring the founding of the organization that same day 200 years earlier. Governor Charlie Baker also issued a proclamation to recognize the important anniversary, and so did President Barack Obama. H+H’s historical connection to U.S. Presidents and elected officials, and its involvement in many civic and political events that took place in Boston throughout the 19th century were showcased in various documents and at events. The ambitious celebration, which began on October 10 with a large reception attended by many H+H supporters and marked the launch of the public phase of the Instrumental Voices Campaign, highlighted the following projects and events: A Bicentennial commemorative magazine, encompassing H+H’s great 200-year history with comprehensive articles on its evolution and an outline of all Bicentennial events, published in September 2014.
