Get rid of the January blues As January becomes a distant memory, we hit a realisation that those things we said we wanted to do, we haven’t achieved. We then worry about how difficult it will be to achieve these goals... Worrying drains your energy, it can make you more stressed and overly anxious and interfere with your daily life. Did you know that the average Brit spends five years of their life worrying? Worrying at all times will never help you in the long run. So before you get stressed, here are some great ways to defeat your worries: 1. Understand that too much worrying is never going to help. Constant worrying makes you anxious and stressed. As a result, you become less productive and unable to make good decisions. 2. Turn the worrying into a puzzle or challenge. So you can’t help but worry? Fine. But instead of burdening yourself, why not try to conquer it? Instead of worrying about your problems, think of how you can resolve them. 3. Don’t think about what MIGHT happen. No one can ever predict what’s going to happen later today, tomorrow or during the next few days. If you keep on thinking ‘what if’, you’re simply wasting energy – which you need to work on your goals. 4. Expect the unexpected. Every day will not always be sunny. Neither will it always be rainy. Once you accept this fact, you will be able to manage your worries because you recognise the possibility of failing. Build a tolerance. 5. Learn the art of optimism. Negative thoughts fuel worrying and anxiety. Never let negative thoughts and emotions overwhelm you, you can always find a way to smile. 6. Don’t hide from your worries. Do not suppress your worries

because you never can. Worrying is hardwired in our brain. You simply have to acknowledge your issues and then move on! 7. Schedule time for your worrying. Never let worrying eat at your day! If your life is stressful, find suitable ways to express it. 8. Don’t get stuck with worries, find solutions. Your worries should be compensated with appropriate solutions. Don’t just sit there and worry - do something! 9. Sleep it over. You don’t really want to take your worries with you as you sleep, or else you will wake up the next day anxious and feeling less energetic. Before going to bed, write down all your worries on a piece of paper. You will be surprised on how this simple activity can lighten your mood. 10. Live in the now. Stay in the moment. No one can tell what’s going to happen in the future. Nevertheless, you are capable of making the future more favourable for you. How? Live in the now and do your best! SOLUTION FOCUSED HYPNOTHERAPY is an effective way to change unwanted behaviours, boost motivation, gain increased confidence, lose weight and generally feel the best you can…. and it’s easy to do! Solution focused Hypnotherapy uses the most up to date brain based research so we understand why we feel the way we do, but most importantly we know and understand how by using Psychotherapeutic techniques and Hypnotherapy we can get you back to feeling the best you can, sleeping better, making better choices for yourself and ditching unwanted habits including smoking and poor eating habits. The side effects are that you become more motivated and start achieving positive things in your life. Nicola Parker Counselling & Hypnotherapy - 01752 710310

home to the revolutionary VibroSLIM weight loss machines and now St. Budeaux are delighted to announce the arrival of VibroSLIM at their studio. Using the principles of vibration training to create instability in the body, the machines repeatedly vibrate and oscillate, forcing the muscles to contract up to 50 times per second allowing up to 300 calories to be burned in as little as 10 minutes. For those looking to get into shape for the summer, without breaking the bank, or even breaking a sweat, VibroSLIM could be the kick start they’ve been waiting for. With no kit and no hard physical activity required, the tried and tested machine has proven extremely successful for all shapes, sizes and

abilities. Caroline Tiernan-Locke, Marketing Manager for Consol says ‘We’ve had some really fantastic results. As well as helping our customers to achieve their weight loss goals, we’ve found that VibroSLIM is also a key factor in helping to improve skin tone, circulation, flexibility and stress. In fact, with success comes a diverse customer base and we even have an 84 year old male coming in for regular sessions!’ What’s more, anyone thinking about trying VibroSLIM can pop down and have their first session for free and after that, customers can use the VibroSLIM machines an unlimited amount of times in a one month period from only £15 a month! A Black Englishman By Carolyn Slaughter This is an enthralling novel set in 1920 in India. It follows the story of a young lady, Isabel, in search of herself and escaping the death of her fiancé and the great war. She wrongly marries a career soldier and soon finds out he is cruel and brutal. Ending up in India, she falls passionately in love with Sam, an Indian doctor. This is an intimate epic of their love and the religious violence and terror they have to face. It takes them across the width and breath of India and it is a very powerful novel, rich in descriptions and very emotional.

A Perfectly Good Man By Patrick Gale The only other book of his that I have read is “Notes from an Exhibition”, which I loved. His books are set in the Penzance area and this enhances his beautiful stories if you are a lover of Cornwall. He has written this tale with such thoughtfulness about love, morality and faith. The story revolves around Barnaby, a quiet parish priest whose world is changed by Lenny, a twenty year old paralysed on a rugby pitch. The author brings in other characters of varying ages which brings together a compelling novel waiting to be read. I quickly got into the story and found it utterly absorbing and hard to put down.

Tiny Sunbirds Far Away By Christie Watson This is an enthralling epic of life in Southern India through the 19th and 20th century. The book really captivates the vivid atmosphere and interesting cultures of the area, and all the way through you feel totally swallowed up by the vast beauty of the region. It follows the lives of three main characters, Devi, Devanna and Machu and explores their lives, loves and losses. Once over the first 50 pages you feel you know the families and background and you become totally enthralled with the story. It is a riveting novel about the choices we make in the name of family, nation, and love. There are many surprises in the plot, which compel you to keep reading and make it very hard to put down.

Plant & Rake without the ache As a nation of garden lovers, gardening can be very rewarding, but when activities such as seeding, weeding, watering, digging and lifting are done the wrong way, this can place strain and stress on our backs. So before you race in to the garden or allotment you may wish to consider some of the following tips.

Offer First Appointment:

Bend your knees to lift with ease Get Close to the Load: Keep feet shoulder width apart, head up. Pivot with your feet, don’t twist your body whilst carrying the load Keep your knees bent and your back straight, using leg and arm muscles to lift Do not lift heavy objects above your waist. Avoid lifting after bending or kneeling for a long time.

Initial Consultation and Full Spinal Assessment Thermal Scan / X-rays*

The Right Moves Positioning your body correctly reduces strain on muscles and joints. Alternate tasks from heavy to light, back to heavy. Change hands regularly and don’t stay in one position too long. Kneel to plant (using knee pads or a mat), keeping your back straight. When raking, put one leg in front of the other, and switch often.

Second Appointment:

The Right Tools Choose tools that are ergonomically designed, are correct for the job, have padded handles, are lightweight, and have spring action, where appropriate. Separate large loads into smaller ones, using a wheelbarrow if possible. Wear comfortable supportive footwear. In general, about 80% of people experience low back pain at some stage in their lives. Back or muscle pain that lasts longer than 48 hours is your body’s way of saying it needs help. Chiropractors are trained to detect and treat spinal problems. They provide expert care for your back, muscles and joints.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day is a wonderful occasion that has been a highlight in our calendars for hundreds of years. It is the perfect time to revive your relationship and fill the air with romance. Anne Corry reveals..

E

verybody knows that 14th February is Valentine’s Day, the day when Charlie Brown waits in vain for a card from the little red haired girl and Snoopy gets more cards than anyone. Perhaps because of Charlie and his friends many people think of Valentine’s cards and gifts as an American tradition, but they would be wrong. In England we have been sending romantic greetings on February 14th for over five hundred years. It may have started with a Christian priest named Valentinus who lived in Rome and was arrested for following what was then a banned religion. The story goes that he cured his jailer’s daughter of blindness and when he was taken out to be executed he left her a farewell note signed “from your Valentine.” Valentinus was made a Saint and his feast day was February 14th. The romance didn’t come in until 1382 when the poet Geoffrey Chaucer wrote a poem celebrating Richard II’s engagement. Valentine’s name was mentioned in the poem and the tradition of associating St Valentine with lovers took off. Early Valentine’s greetings were hand written of course so it was hard to be

anonymous. That didn’t start until the end of the eighteenth century when publishers began printing cards for folk who could not write soppy verses of their own. The Victorians loved them and because they were anonymous the verses got more than a little racy. In Japan and Korea, it’s the girls who give chocolates to the boys on February 14th. But they get their own back on White Day in March when the boys are supposed to reply with more chocolate. It’s considered an insult if the “reply” is not worth two or three times the value of the original gift. Back at home, St Valentine’s Day is as much a day for couples as it is for the lovelorn Charlie Browns. People exchange cards and gifts and many try to

make some sort of a romantic gesture like going for a quiet dinner or a trip to the theatre or the cinema. Some people take short-break holidays to romantic destinations. It’s all great fun, of course, but does it really make a difference to a relationship? If the relationship is already good then the answer would be yes. Romance is a necessary component of a healthy relationship and Valentine’s Day is a good time for keeping it alive or perhaps revitalising a slightly tired sense of romance. If the relationship is in trouble then no amount of chocolate is going to rescue it. Instead of using the traditions of February 14th to cover up what is wrong, it may be more useful to use the day as a chance

for taking stock and trying to come up with a plan to put right the cracks that have appeared. Doing something different is a good start. Relationships can get into trouble for no other reason than that the partners have become too used to each other. It can seem endearing when long established couples finish one another’s sentences but it can also be a sign that they have lost interest, that they don’t really notice each other any longer. A Valentine’s Day surprise can be the little jolt that makes them really see each other. If two people are so used to each other that they can predict the other’s reactions (or think they can) then they stop communicating and without communication a relationship will suffocate. Taking a Valentine’s trip is an opportunity to stop taking each other for granted and start talking again.

“Relationships can get into trouble for no other reason than that the partners have become too used to each other” One of the most destructive things in any relationship is “mind reading”. Mind reading happens when one partner assumes that they know what the other person is thinking and “puts words in their mouth”. A Valentine’s date can be a way of clearing out these old assumptions. On a date two people can get to know each

other all over again; asking questions and listening to the answers; finding out what the other person really thinks, what they like and dislike, what hurts them and what strengthens them. They were awake to all of these things when they first met and began to fall in love but time and familiarity can blunt that awareness of the other until the relationship is almost gone and there are just two people living separate lives, but who just happen to live together.

joke of it. But as time goes by and they get too used to one another, differences become less tolerated and eventually turn into a source of annoyance and even quarrelling. Each one begins to try to

Perhaps one partner start talking again” likes something that other was always When two people first meet and experience that spark that tells them that something is going to happen between them, they tend to tread carefully. They won’t express strong opinions until they have “scouted the territory” and discovered what the other person thinks. They recognised that other people do things differently. If one of them was the sort of person who catches a train with a minute to spare while the other arrives at the station in time to catch the train before the one they want, they would make a

unwilling to try. A Valentine’s date may be the time to try it, or it could be a bit more adventurous, trying something that is new to both of them. If the relationship is already in pretty good order, why not take it to the next level? Be like the car that can switch its engine from six cylinders to twelve – only once the relationship is firing on twelve cylinders, keep it that way. HIGH QUALITY DINING in a relaxing pub atmosphere T he recently refurbished Elburton Inn, is situated in the centre of Elburton Village with easy access on the main road leading to Kingsbridge. Greeted by a relaxing, inviting atmosphere with candles burning. The new décor is smart and modern, and creates a spacious feel with beautiful oak tables filling the room.

The menu is ample and covers lunches, set course deals and evening dining. The main focus is on their homemade local produce burgers and steaks, offering both traditional & exciting flavours such as ‘Thai Spiced Pork Burger with Mango Chutney’. Their meat is locally produced and freshly prepared and the prices are incredibly reasonable. The 8oz homemade beef burger is mouth wateringly tender and just unbelievably tasty. The burger is served in a soft, toasted sesame seed bun with handmade chunky chips and salad.

22 Feb/Mar 2013

Presentation of the meals is fantastic and makes the experience that bit more exciting! The Sirloin Steak is cooked to perfection and served exactly how it is requested. It comes served with triple cooked chips that were desirably fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. It was also served with Mushrooms, a stuffed tomato, peas and upon request there are choices of sauces to accompany the meal. Sampling a range of the desserts was definitely a real treat! They have a wonderful range of desserts including the warm delights of Sticky Toffee Pudding, Winter Crumble with Clotted Cream, Chocolate Fondant and Crème Brulee, just to name a few. The homemade chocolate fondant melts in the mouth. It is served with vanilla ice cream topped with indulgent homemade dark chocolate fudge.

The service is with a smile, pleasant and approachable. A highly recommended choice would be to sample The Elburton Inn’s burgers on a Wednesday with a meal for 2 and a bottle of wine for only £20. So why not escape those winter blues and enjoy high standard, local produce at great value in a relaxing atmosphere. The Elburton Inn, Elburton, PL9 8HX Tel: 01752 403213

Mothering Sunday is fast approaching and as we rush round grabbing cards, flowers and chocolates, spare a thought for those mums of old who were so down-trodden this was the only day they got a break.

W

world to dedicate a day specially to mothers when a clerical decree in the 1600s expanded the celebrations.

hile you might be treating your beloved mum to the latest home appliance, a meal out or a luxury spa session, mothers in days gone by were lucky if saw their offspring once a year. Although often called Mothers’ Day, Mothering Sunday has no connection to the American festival of the same name and is always celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which this year falls on March 10. The celebration has its origins in the ancient Roman Hilaria Festival to honour Cybele, mother of the Gods. This tradition gave way as Christianity spread through Europe and became part of Laetere Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Lent.

In times when it was common for children to leave home at the age of 10 to work as apprentices, farm hands and domestic servants, this was the only day of the year families were reunited.

Early English Christians used this day to venerate the Virgin Mary and Mother Church and usually celebrated at their local chapel - their ‘mother church’ - and were said to have gone ‘a-mothering’. England became the first country in the

Returning sons and daughters who were in service often picked posies of flowers for their mothers on the way to the service, hence the long-standing tradition. To enable them to further enjoy the celebrations, the Lenten fasting rules were relaxed and the day also became known as Refreshment Sunday. Young servants and maids were therefore allowed to bake a cake as a gift for their mother and fruit cakes with two layers of almond paste, known as Simnel Cakes, became a popular present. Of course it’s a fruit cake with a religious flavour and is topped with 11 marzipan balls, signifying 11 of Christ’s

eventually agreed to do both so the cake was named after them both - Sim-Nell. The advent of the Industrial Revolution almost spelt the death-knell for this tradition as harsh working conditions put paid to the annual celebration for the vast majority of the working poor. But with the inux of American soldiers into England during the world wars, the tradition was revived by homesick troops, albeit on the second Sunday of May.

12 Apostles, minus the traitor Judas Iscariot. The name itself is likely derived from the Latin simila - a ďŹ ne wheat our - but legend has it that a man called Simon and his wife Nell argued over whether the cake should be backed or boiled. They

The US celebration renewed interest in Mothering Sunday in England and today while it has retained its religious roots, the festival has evolved into a broader, secular celebration of motherhood. So go on, make some time just for your mum this Mothering Sunday. There was a time when it was the only day of the year you would get the chance.

New showroom now open! System KBB are celebrating 25 years in business with a fantastic new showroom...

T

he best way to view a range of products is to see them first hand. Brochures are great to get an idea of the product, but a showroom is the perfect way to view all the features. This is why, at System KBB, they are determined to present their range to its best advantage for the customer. Now celebrating 25 years in business, based at Stowford Business Park in Ivybridge, they are creating a brand new showroom to display kitchen, bathroom and bedroom furniture. Joyce Roberts, Director of System KBB has seen dramatic developments in the industry over the years and is delighted with the quality of products that are on the market today. “Everything has improved tremendously. Showers have a lot better enclosures and all the products are a lot easier to use”. The showroom will be gradually transformed over the next few months, with new displays being installed and some added to existing pieces. System KBB has become a Neff Partner, so visitors will be able to see a working Neff Kitchen in the showroom, 28 Feb/Mar 2013

including a working hob and ideal boiler. This will be extremely helpful for customers when planning to buy a new kitchen. “Because we are changing the showroom we will have more kitchens. It is going to be more contemporary – showing all the different things people can have,” says Joyce. While System KBB offer a fantastic variety of modern fittings, they have a versatile range of traditional styles, so they can cater for all tastes. “We are showing some of the modern free standing and wall hung items – but we also have a Burlington suite featuring a slipper bath and old fashioned pedestal with a base sink and toilet unit.“ Not only do the company offer standard sizes, but they have a bespoke service for made to measure fittings where everything is tailored to the specific requirements of the customer. Whatever your personal requirement and choice of purchase, System KBB ensure realistic prices and a high

level of customer service. “My pet hate is once a company has taken your money they don’t care anymore,” says Joyce. Fortunately at System KBB much of the business is through “Word of mouth and recommendation.” The Showroom is in an ideal location, with close proximity to the A38, making it easily accessible for customers living in Plymouth, Plymstock, Plympton and the surrounding areas. With its workshop on the premises and a team of fitters and allied trades to deal with all aspects of installations, everything is arranged for you, so all you need to do is enjoy the finished job. Visit the showroom to view the quality of the products available at System KBB, so you can see how good your new kitchen, bedroom or bathroom will look in your own home.

What’sOn

Feb/Mar 2013 Royal Plymouth. One of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies of love and confusion, Twelfth Night tells a twisted tale of mistaken identity, transformation and deception. The value of good quality care homes in our community These days, life in a reputable care home is a positive outcome for many older people who benefit from the regular contact and support of having people around them 24 hours a day.

L

ife in a care home can be very good indeed with three delicious cooked meals a day, regular hot and cold drinks, snacks and home baked cakes and biscuits. A friendly face who knows you well enough to detect if you seem a bit ‘off colour’ or just ‘not yourself’. People around, to keep an eye out should you fall or just not be able to get up and about as easily as you used to. The reassurance of knowing that trusted help is close at hand from people who understand the challenges and frustrations growing older can bring. Care staff there to protect your dignity in difficult times and support you to make your own choices to live as full a life as you wish to. Care homes are just that – ‘Home’ where you are cared about – just like our own family homes. A place of comfort, safety and familiarity, a care home provides a secure base for the person who lives there and relieves loved ones

from the worry of something going wrong for a person living on their own. Care homes offer employees a rewarding career that develops professional skills and knowledge as well as diploma qualifications. Increasingly recognised as hubs of excellence, medical staff work within the care sector during their university degrees to gain valuable training, understanding and appreciation of care of the elderly. These days a career in care is both satisfying and (due to the high level of professionalism now demanded) highly respected within the community.
