The Ironworks is Southend’s beloved arts and culture venue, situated at 90 The High Street. The concept has rapidly grown in popularity, becoming a hub of creativity and entertainment in the heart of Southend since opening in September 2022.
The venue boasts a diverse range of activities and performances, ensuring there's something for everyone to enjoy in a safe, fun, and relaxed atmosphere. From live music and comedy to jazz history, musical theatre productions, improv, belly dancing, art workshops, kids' clubs, additional needs club nights, social gatherings, 'Tiny Tots Time,' and ‘Welcome Thursdays’ (a free lunch, hot drink, and social for the over 65s), The Ironworks offers a wide array of entertainment options.
by Natalie Solomons info@kiwiproductions.co.uk
Phone: 07779990786
The Ironworks Community Interest Company (Kiwi Community Events CIC) was established in 2021 as a response by Kiwi Productions to Southend Council's call to activate an empty High Street shop space, emphasizing creative uses, community engagement, and the fight against social isolation, as well as emotional and physical well-being. In such a short time, The Ironworks has become an integral part of Southend's cultural regeneration, with accomplishments including:
• Welcoming over 150,000 individuals since its doors opened.
• Providing space for over 50 charities, local service providers, and local government campaigns.
• Hosting 80 weekly additional needs clubs, welcoming over 1,000 visits from members.
• Offering free arts and crafts for children, with over 150 kids participating each week.
• Hosting numerous private and music events, involving over 1,000 musicians.
• Showcasing numerous artists and supporting local traders.
• Employing 20 individuals and engaging 10 regular weekly volunteers, many with additional needs.
LOCAL ISSUES
Earlier this year, the community interest company (not for profit) announced it was set to close due to a lack of funding. Following the announcement, the response from the community was overwhelming – the news flooded Southend and it became the talk of the city.
Co-Founder Natalie said, ‘We were totally overwhelmed by all of the hundreds of messages of support for The Ironworks – we were actually flabbergasted! The next day, Ami and I agreed that we needed to give this one more fight!’
Community Support Saves The Ironworks
With donations from local businesses, including Atlantic Pacific, Unitruck, and Progressive Media, as well as personal donations from the public, the team was able to pay the rent and remain at the beloved venue on Southend High Street.
Natalie continues, “We still needed to become viable, and the next stroke of genius came from local entrepreneur Sonny Green – he came up with the idea of a membership club! We put this out on social media for feedback and it was received brilliantly, so we made it happen – this is what is ultimately going to sustain us.”
Launch of Ironworks Membership Club
Since the new Ironworks Membership Subscription launched, they have managed to welcome over 200 members of the community to ‘the Club,’ paying a monthly fee.
There are various levels of membership, including £5, £10, and £30 per month (unlimited hot drinks!), all bringing in FREE event tickets, hot drinks, and little treats!
Ami Solomons (co-Founder of The Ironworks) says, ‘The Ironworks is a truly amazing place; we welcome people in to chat, socialise, take up new hobbies or simply enjoy some food and drink in a relaxed environment. The pace of life is so fast and often isolated nowadays, with people working from home, that we need to ensure venues remain open to allow people to be together. We can’t wait to welcome you all in again very soon.’
For more information on the membership packages and how to sign up, please pop in to the Ironworks or visit: ironworkssouthend.co.uk
The Ironworks is not just a place for events and activities; it is a safe, accessible space that enriches the lives of the Southend community. Testimonials and the impact of their work can be found on their social media channels, particularly on their Facebook page (facebook.com/ theIronWorksSouthend) and Instagram (instagram. com/iron.workssouthend/).

CELEBRATING OVER 40 YEARS IN THE TRADE!
Call us on 01702 343896
DG Servicing is a local family run business that specialise in all aspects of double glazing repairs and installations, established for over 40 years (Est. 1983), building a reputation as being trustworthy, reliable and professional. We cover Essex, London and the Home Counties and are able to competently carry out all types of double glazing repairs and new installations for domestic and commercial customers, as below:
>> DOORS - ALL TYPES INCLUDING RESIDENTIAL, PATIO, FRENCH, BI-FOLDING, COMPOSITE, TILT & SLIDE <<
Misted up/broken sealed units, Locks/handles/hinges, Patio door rollers/tracks/locks, Dropped doors, Cylinder change, Letterboxes, Door knockers/viewers etc, Cat/dog flaps, Transom closers
>> WINDOWS - ALL TYPES INCLUDING CASEMENT, BAY WINDOWS, VERTICAL SLIDING SASH, TILT & TURN <<
The external parts of uPVC window frames are continuously exposed to the elements, which eventually causes weathering. Over a long period of time window foil can start to shrink causing the foil to bubble and peel. If left untreated the foil will eventually blister and start to split. Fortunately, our team of DG Servicing fitters can restore damaged window foil back to its original state.
Depending on the quantity of uPVC frame that needs re-foiling, the price can be as little as a tenth of the cost of replacement double glazed frames!
We are proud to be members of FENSA, SafeContractor, Constructionline and CHAS, guaranteeing quality products and service, we are also fully insured for peace of mind for our customers.
If there is something you require that is not listed above, please contact us as we are always happy to give you professional, friendly and helpful advice.
St Michael’s C of E Prep School The Pathway to Success
For St Michael’s School, “the pathway to success" goes beyond just academic achievement. It's about nurturing wellrounded individuals who are prepared to thrive in the next stage of their education and beyond. The pathway to success for any child attending St Michael’s means the following:
“The staff are incredibly dedicated. The quality of teaching and learning is fantastic and what's best for the children is at the heart of the school. I've always thought the standard of music here is phenomenal.”
“A place that gave me the best chance of succeeding in a good career and as a person.”
“St Michael’s set me up for success in life.”
Academic Excellence: A strong academic foundation is a key focus, preparing students for entrance exams to grammar schools as well as top senior schools. Parents have consistently chosen St Michael’s for their small class sizes, to ensure their children get the individualised attention and nurturing they need to succeed.
Holistic Development: We go beyond academics, fostering a love of learning and encouraging pupils to explore their interests. This can involve extracurricular activities in sports, arts, music, and clubs that develop wellrounded individuals.
Character Building: Our Christian ethos emphasises strong values like kindness, integrity, resilience and thoughtful leadership. We create a supportive environment where pupils can develop these qualities and become confident individuals.
Preparation for Senior School: St Michael’s prepares students not just academically, but also socially and emotionally for the transition to a larger and more demanding senior school environment. With pupils learning in specialist classrooms, taught by experienced subject matter teachers, they are ready for the secondary school format way ahead of their peers.
Strong School Community: A sense of belonging and a positive school community are important aspects of the success of our school, fostering a safe and nurturing environment where pupils feel comfortable taking risks and learning from their mistakes.
A St Michael’s education lays the foundations for a lifetime of achievement, helping children find their own unique pathway to success in the future.
The Knife Angel
By Southend Community Safety Partnership
National Monument Visits Southend to Combat Knife Crime
The Knife Angel, the National Monument Against Violence and Aggression, is a thought-provoking 27-foot-high sculpture crafted from over 100,000 confiscated or surrendered weapons and is now in Southend-on-Sea.
The weapons, including knives inscribed with messages from impacted families or former offenders, were confiscated by Police Forces across the country.
Educating Youth on Violence:
It has been created as an iconic symbol against violence and aggression, particularly knife crime in the UK, to educate young people on the harmful and long-lasting effects that violent behavior can have on communities, families, and victims. The Knife Angel has been touring the country as a poignant symbol of hope and social change. From now until Sunday, 28 July, it is located at the Victoria Circus end of the High Street, offering both residents and visitors a unique opportunity to witness the sculpture up close and the powerful message it sends.
surrender bin located near the sculpture. A free program of learning opportunities is planned throughout July, aimed at preventing youth involvement in violence. The sessions will encourage parents, carers, and residents of all ages to learn more about the impacts of violence, the signs of exploitation and county lines, explore proactive solutions, and engage in meaningful dialogue
Activities for Youth
A unique aspect of Southend-on-Sea's hosting is the spotlight on positive recreational activities available for children and young people across the city, with clubs offering a host of demonstrations and taster sessions throughout the month. The council is keen for as many residents, charities, and businesses as possible to get involved during July as part of the innovative program of activities. Any organization or individual interested in donating their time, providing sponsorship, or in-kind support can find out more by emailing: knifeangelsouthend@southend.gov.uk.

St. Bernard's Triumphs in Athletics Cup
by Michael Saad Merito Marketing

St. Bernard's High School Teams Achieve Unprecedented Success in English Schools Athletics Track and Field Cup.
St. Bernard's High School, in Southend, is proud to announce the outstanding achievements of its athletics teams in the 2024 English Schools Athletics Track and Field Cup. The dedication and hard work of our students have resulted in phenomenal success, marking a significant milestone in the school's athletic history.
Since February, the girls' athletics teams have been rigorously training with sessions held in the mornings, at lunchtime, and after school. Despite the small school site, over 100 students have demonstrated remarkable commitment by walking 4 km to the school's playing fields each week to train on grass and access necessary athletics facilities.
Historic Advancement
Both the Junior and Intermediate Girls teams showcased their prowess by qualifying from the Essex firstround match and advancing to the East Anglia Regional B Final. This prestigious event gathers schools ranked 11th-25th from Essex, Suffolk,
Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Norfolk. This year marks the first time in many years that St. Bernard's has reached this stage of the ESAA competition.
In the Regional B Final, the Intermediate Girls team delivered an exceptional performance, securing 1st place out of all the competing schools. The Junior Girls team also excelled, finishing in a commendable 5th place. These results are a testament to the girls' dedication, resilience, and teamwork.
Pride and Future Aspirations
Mr. Phillips, Head of Physical Education, expressed his pride in the teams' achievements: "The success of our athletics teams is a brilliant reward for their hard work and dedication. The commitment shown by our students is truly inspiring. We are excited for the future and aim to go even further next year, with the goal of qualifying for the National finals."
This year's achievements have set a new standard for St. Bernard's School, and they look forward to supporting young women athletes as they continue to strive for excellence in their sporting endeavors.

By the Pond
Plant herbs, leek, and winter brassicas. Continue to sow successions of carrots, radishes, spring onions, and beetroot. This is also the time for your final batch of French beans. Check runner beans for black fly and twist them in when required. Feed and water tomatoes regularly; irregular watering can cause splitting. Additionally, check for cabbage white butterfly eggs under brassica leaves or in the shade of other leaves, and squash any that you find.
Cut back pond plants if they have finished flowering or are out of control. Ensure that you have some splashing water in your pond to increase oxygen. Top up ponds and water features, ensuring that you use de-chlorinator.

District Commander:
Maintaining the trust of the local community remains
My Top Priority!
Southend’s District Commander, Chief Inspector Jo Collins, has said increasing public engagement and addressing local people’s concerns has helped to improve confidence levels and reduce offending.
Ch Insp Collins also cited the work of the force’s Town Centre Team, the importance of being highly visible in the community, and the strong partnerships forged with public sector partners and the local business community as being key to keeping Southend safe.
Across the district, crime is down by 9.6% with 1,940 fewer offences reported in the year to the end of April. Anti-social behaviour decreased by more than a third (34.6%) in the same period.
High Confidence in Local Policing
In a recent survey, Southend residents had the joint-highest levels of confidence in policing in Essex, the most confidence in the quality of service, and 80% believed that officers were doing a good or excellent job.
Ch Insp Collins said: “When I became District Commander in 2022, I spoke about building local relationships for the benefit of everyone in the district. “I wanted to challenge the perception that we were only focused on the seafront, increase confidence, and show people that we understood their issues and
were there to help them. “We have worked hard to be visible. We’re running more engagement events in more places than ever before and the feedback from local residents has been encouraging. Maintaining the trust of the local community remains my top priority.”
Numerous Arrests and Prosecutions
Significant policing initiatives in Southend include Operation Union – which runs from May to September to deal with summer demand and has so far this year led to 23 arrests for offences including assault and drug possession - and the Town Centre Team’s Operation Raker, which targets the city’s most prolific offenders and has led to 50 prosecutions.
Committed to Ongoing Improvement
Despite the positive results, Ch Insp Collins said her team are always looking at how they can improve: “We are listening to people and acting on their concerns. We put operation in place after people made us aware of issues in York Road and Hamlet Court Road, we gave the residents’ association in Shoebury an officer to be a point of contact for their area, and we’ve concentrated on improving levels of communication with victims of crime.
“We know we don’t always get it right but when mistakes have been made, we learn from them.”
Chief Inspector Collins

Gabrielle's Journey to Success!
Gabrielle came to me feeling stuck and unable to move forward with her dream of writing a children's book. She had wonderful ideas about creating stories with meaningful messages, aiming to help children recognise their unique qualities and embrace differences. However, she felt blocked and had lost her confidence and self-esteem.
When Gabrielle first approached me, it was clear that several underlying issues and anxieties were holding her back. We worked together to address these issues, helping her reconnect with her inner strength and creativity.
As we continued, Gabrielle began to regain her sense of self-worth and confidence. She could see her path forward clearly and felt motivated to pursue her goals. The sessions helped her overcome the mental blocks that had previously hindered her progress.
Achieving Creative Success
With her newfound clarity and determination, Gabrielle was able to complete her children's book, "I Love You Just The Way You Are." This book is a beautifully simple yet powerful story that encourages children to appreciate their unique qualities and understand that everyone is special, despite their differences. Gabrielle’s journey shows the importance of addressing personal barriers to
achieve one's dreams. By overcoming her anxieties and rebuilding her confidence, she was able to bring her creative vision to life. Her book now teaches children about self-acceptance and the beauty of diversity.
Advice for Others Feeling Stuck

As a leading domestic glass replacement company for more than 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows are the leading name in the industry. There is no need for you to risk your windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the street. You can join over 336,000 happy customers and replace your glass ethically and affordably. Take a minute to check your home to see if any double glazing has failed? Taking action now can prevent future financial problems.
When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Chris Miller it became clear that these
values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money.
The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Chris commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.
