Welcome to my new service

My service various topics such as: •

From personal experience, I know how difficult it can be to decide what to do when a loved one is taken ill or diagnosed with chronic disease.

• • •

Due to the nature of disease, families become very sensitive and protective of their loved ones. Apart from the initial denial and panic that people experience when they see, sense or feel that something is wrong with their loved one, together with the lack of education available, is it really a surprise that individuals don’t really know where to turn especially those old age problems, with rising care costs.

• • •

! covers

Considerations of what you may have to prepare for when older family members need help and how it may affect you and or your business. Considerations for asset protection. Health- Social Care – It’s impact. Who Pays? Understanding the various powers of attorneys, which one is right for you? The importance of making a will. Considering A Care Home, Ask the right questions. How to manage and cope with Alzheimer’s disease.

The experience has taught me just how much I am able to contribute to my clients by making sure they stay two steps ahead of the system.

The feedback from last year’s event was outstanding including the following comments; Alun Finnigan - “The event’s organisers and supporters made this event enjoyable and their enthusiasm to make the event a success was evident! If you want a challenge whilst helping a great cause (with no pressure) and to run a beautiful course then I'll see you next year.”

24 hour Run

Clair Evans - “What an amazing event - never done anything like it before and it was brilliant. Lovely route, experienced organisers, great atmosphere. Can't wait till next year!”

T

he second staging of the HARP 24 will take place at Westcliff Rugby Club and Cherry Orchard Country Park on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd June. The event is open to competitors of all abilities and involves running 4.2 mile circuits through picturesque countryside. As well as giving participants the opportunity to get in shape for the summer, the event will raise much needed funds for the homeless of Southend. The first staging of the event last year raised the magnificent sum of £4,500 for HARP and the organisers are hoping to double that figure this year. The event is aimed at teams of from 2 to 8 people but individuals are also welcome. The idea is to have a team member on the course throughout the 24 hours of the event which starts at noon on 22nd and finishes at noon on 23rd June. However, this is not obligatory and if teams wish to take a break, this is OK. Last year one team ran one circuit each, then partied, stayed the night and left the next morning! The emphasis is on having fun while you run and completing the challenges of being involved for 24 hours and running in the dark on the shortest weekend night of the year.

Kasia Kostyrka-Allchorne - “What a cracking race! Excellent organisation and fantastic support from the organisers, nice goody bag and t-shirt, medal and a trophy for all finishers, beautiful course and a great adventure.” So if you are a member of a sports team or club or some other organisation such as a business or community organisation and want to participate in a sporting challenge then visit the website at http://www.harpsouthend.co.uk/HARP24.htm

demand for immediate internet access from all portable devices will increase, allowing more and more people to browse the net via their mobile phone. Other countries whose 4G is already up and running have already seen a significant growth in mobile usage. According to estimates by The ITU (June 2012) there are 1.1 billion active mobile-broadband subscriptions in the world, that is 16 percent of the global population. Mobile-broadband subscriptions have grown 45 percent annually over the last four years and subscriptions outnumber fixed broadband subscriptions 2:1.

Natural Progression Judging by the above evidence and seeing how the mobile phone market is still growing at such a pace it isn’t difficult to see why so many businesses are now making their general websites mobile phone compatible. This next stage in the development of websites is a natural progression and those businesses who want to maintain a strong competitive edge will need to think seriously about updating their website to become mobile phone compatible in order to maintain their market share and be credible within this continually challenging technical climate.

approach to website creation that I straight away asked her to help me out. I was hugely impressed with the professional approach and how everything was indeed made to seem very simple – I was included as part of the process and all my views and thoughts taken on board and great advise given as we went along. As I work in PR and Marketing I was possibly the worst client they had ever had! I examined every word and every single piece of punctuation and made innumerable changes so I could get it 100% how I like it – but every single time nothing as too much trouble and any problem at all, and things were done super fast. Steve was a total angel and gave me a great training session and has been on tap for ongoing support as I get to grips with using the site. I am absolutely delighted with my final website and think it is everything I wanted and more – and I have had tonnes of feedback from other people asking where I got it from as they want one too and I am very happy to send them to the Oracle. I would heartily recommend anyone to work with them. - Tracy Jones www.brera-london.com

White Hot! E

very year the fashion industry tries to recycle an old look and push it as this season’s ‘must have’. For years and some reason known only to itself, fashion was convinced we should all be rocking the cowboy look and repeatedly flooded the High Street with plaid, denim and faux Stetsons. But, as the folk singer Mike Harding sagely put it, it’s hard being a cowboy in Rochdale, the spurs don’t fit right on your clogs and people laugh when I ride past, on our Alsatian dog. For me, there is one wardrobe staple that never goes out of style and works with any outfit – the simple, crisp white shirt. Whether on a man or a woman, nothing beats the white shirt. The key is its versatility. Ditching a t-shirt for a collar conveys a more sophisticated appearance and leaving a couple of buttons undone looks dressed-down and effortlessly cool. Frills and bows on a blouse add femininity and a touch of fun. This also makes a blouse a little more ‘dressy’, which means that it can be worn as a statement garment in the office or for a night out.

against which you can show off a ‘look at me’ accessory, be it an eye-catching necklace, over-sized watch, bracelet or bold-print silk scarf. Alternatively, keeping things plain and simple allows you to show off a bold new hair cut or make-up without any distractions. What’s more, it is the perfect way to let your personality shine through. Teaming a shirt with skinny trousers and high heels creates a clever mix of professional, assertive and sassy. The versatility of the white shirt or blouse is never more perfectly demonstrated, than when you pull on a pair of blue jeans, or wear it with a suit or belted skirt. Of course, there is one absolute rule, it must fit. If a shirt fits well then it becomes whatever you want it to be and depending on your mood and the situation, you’re wearing one of fashion’s timeless icons. Sponsored by

Money Matters

Your ISA allowance – a wasted opportunity? I

n the current environment of low interest rates, low economic growth and modest but persistent inflation, savers and investors need to make the most of every opportunity to maximise the returns on their money. Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) represent just such an opportunity; yet many people are wasting the valuable tax-saving advantages and investment potential provided by their annual ISA allowance.

There are two types of ISA: Cash ISAs are savings accounts where the interest is paid tax-free and Stocks & Shares ISAs, as the name suggests, allow investment into a wider range of stock market and other financial instruments. The attraction of a Stocks & Shares ISA is that both income and capital gains attract no further tax liability. However, there are restrictions on how much can be invested in each type. Figures from the Bank of England in December showed that the average Cash ISA deposit rate is just 0.65%. That a huge chunk of £200 billion in savings is failing to beat inflation is a stark illustration of how this rare tax-saving opportunity is being wasted (source: HMRC September 2012). The reality is that the tax benefits provided by ISAs are best maximised by investing for the long term in assets capable of achieving capital growth and rising income. The likelihood is that interest rates will remain very low for a number of years to come and, regrettably, savers cannot even be sure that their Cash ISA account is achieving a better rate than a standard deposit account. Against that

20

LEIGH-ON-SEA ORACLE

backdrop, whilst cash is certainly the right home for money that might be needed in the short term, ISA allowances might be better utilised by investing in a diversified portfolio of assets that have the scope to deliver higher levels of income and long-term capital gains and, in doing so, make the most of the tax freedom on returns. Of course, investors need to bear in mind that the value of a Stocks & Shares ISA may fall as well as rise and it does not provide the security of capital associated with a Cash ISA.

As well as considering the best use of this and future years’ ISA allowances, those who have already built up significant ISA funds might be able to improve the income and capital returns on offer. A thorough review of an ISA portfolio by an experienced wealth manager can ensure that it is appropriately structured and diversified to help achieve immediate or future financial goals. ISAs should be a cornerstone of financial planning, but it is also important to consider them in the context of an overall investment strategy and to ensure that an ISA portfolio can be adjusted easily to cater for changing needs.

If you are scared of the dentist, then this is the lady you need to see… Childhood tooth trauma made Dee determined to be the dentist you actually look forward to visiting

W

hen I was young, my first experience of a dentist was when I was told I needed to have a filling in my baby tooth. I was absolutely petrified and my friends really didn’t help by telling me it was going to be very painful. And sadly that first dentistry experience lived up to all those bad expectations I had. I remember sitting there in that chair and really wishing there was a gentle, kind and patient dentist I could see who would make all my fears of the dentist go away. I wanted a person who would genuinely understand why I was so scared and do all they could to make my panic vanish whilst also doing their best to make my treatment as smooth and painless as possible.

For me dentistry is all about those little details that make a big difference to a patient’s experience – both my surgeries are designed around that philosophy. I know the sound of drill can be quite disconcerting, but unfortunately for the time being the drill is an integral part of dentistry - so I came up with the idea of providing music headphones for patients which help drown out the drilling sound. Another problem for patients is where to look – you need something to distract

Sadly that never materialised, so as I grew older I became determined that the only thing for it was for me to become that gentle, kind, patient and honest dentist myself. That decision led me to university where I trained as a dentist and I now practise at two clinics in Southend - King’s Clinic in Leigh-on-Sea and Smiles on Broadway in Thorpe Bay. Coming to the dentist can be really difficult - even for those who aren’t scared! The last thing you need is to be lectured – so I won't lecture you and I won't tell you what you need to do. I’ll always ask what you want and based on my findings together we will develop a relationship towards you gaining a healthy mouth.

you and take your minds off what is happening, so on the ceiling above my dentists chair is a TV screen to occupy your eyes and thoughts. I hate injections just as much as you so I go that extra mile to ensure they are as painless as possible. I gently numb the target area of the mouth first with a soft, soothing gel before introducing the needle, so hopefully you will hardly feel it once I inject. X-rays can be really uncomfortable too, having to put quite a big piece of plastic in your mouth, so I will always do a relaxing breathing exercise with my patients first to help them prepare for what is coming and make it less stressful. Also there is nothing worse than holding your mouth open for ages – it hurts! – so I finish off extended treatments with a jaw and neck massage. I also understand a lot of the time the jargon that we dentists say makes no rhyme or reason so I always endeavour to be patient and speak in terms that the patient understands as I explain the treatment and advice. And all our decisions will be based on what is best for you AND your wallet. APRIL 2013

As well as your day to day check up’s, fillings and extractions, I can also offer a variety of speciality treatments such as implants, cosmetic dentistry and appliances to help treat clenching, grinding and jaw joint problems. I work really hard to ensure my skills are constantly updated as I think it is really important to keep all treatments under one roof so patients know that they are getting all the treatments they could possibly get from their one dentist they know and trust. My fear of the dentist has never left me, so now every time I treat a patient I put myself back in that dental chair and remember how scared I was looking up at that person as they treated me, and wanting to be treated with that same gentle care that I now deliver to my patients. It means I always strive to be gentle and caring - and I think I’m getting there as my patients tell me it is like having butterflies in their mouths!

recipe of the month

Ingredients cont...

cut into 3cm pieces 2tbsp extra virgin olive oil Grated zest and juice of half a lime 2 tbsp drained capers chopped 1 small garlic clove, crushed 1 tbsp finely chopped flat leaf parsley 1 tbsp finely chopped tarragon

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

1. Cook the potatoes in a pan of boiling salted water until tender. Drain and return to the pan to keep warm. 2. Heat a griddle pan over a medium high heat, spray the salmon fillets with oil and season with salt and black pepper. Cook skin side down for 3-4 minutes until crisp. Turn and cook for a further 2-3 mins or until just cooked through.

‘Chargrilled Salmon with Asparagus in a Lime Vinaigrette’

I

was hoping this April recipe would find the first of the English asparagus in the shops but as I am writing it is cold, windy and wet outside so I doubt it. This is a healthy recipe fairly low in calories and very quick to make. It’s gluten free and Salmon is a good source of omega 3. You can grill, griddle or pop it on a barbecue in the summer. A big platter of this is lovely when entertaining in the garden. Ready in 10 mins

3. Meanwhile, cook the asparagus in a pan of boiling salted water for 1-2 minutes only until al dente. Drain and refresh in cold water and then toss with the remaining oil, lime zest and juice, capers, garlic and herbs. Season with salt, pepper and a pinch of sugar. 4. Divide the potatoes between four plates and top with a piece of salmon. Scatter the asparagus and dressing over the top and serve with a simple rocket salad.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
