Fostering – The new lifestyle career T
he number of children currently needing to be fostered nationally is at a 15 year high. At any one time there are over 50,000 children who are unable to live with their birth parents for various reasons.
Lisa, 47, wanted to be a foster mum after going through the care system as a child herself. There was no foster carer to look after her so she grew up in children’s homes; but she enjoyed the experience and is now using it to help others. She says“I know what it’s like Could you be someone who could open up to be at both sides of the table, so I can feel a their heart and home to a vulnerable child? lot of empathy” Foster caring is a very special role and foster carers come from a variety of backgrounds Now she is caring for a 14 year old girl with It is rewarding both emotionally and finan- behavioural difficulties, alongside her own 18 cially. year old son. She says “It’s going really well. It’s hard going and challenging, but it gives rewards to both of us. It’s great to see the changes in her behaviour”. “It’s a 24 hour commitment, but it’s very good. It’s a lot better than a 9-5 job and there are a lot of benefits. You can really draw on your life experiences and you don’t need any qualifications. If you’ve got a good heart, that is your qualification”. The single mum gave up her full time job and started working for one of i-want-tofoster.com fostering agencies about 2 years ago. Having worked in residential homes for children, she wanted to break free from rules and regulations and be able to trust her instincts as a mother and applied to become a foster carer through local fostering recruitment agency i-want-to-foster.com The application process, in which the agency checks an applicant’s criminal record, takes personal and professional references and examines every part of their history over a period of months. Okay so how much does it cost for children to have their eyes tested? Nothing. Children under 16 are automatically covered by the NHS; as are those 18 or under and in full-time education.
What about if my child needs spectacles? Gone are the days of children having to endure ‘NHS glasses’ and the stigma attached to them. Modern frames are trendy, comfortable and most-importantly durable! If a child does require visual correction then the NHS covers a large part of the cost of the spectacles as well. In some cases there may be no costs attached to them at all.
Caring For Your Child’s Eyes - FAQ
A
t what age should children start having their eyes checked?
Using specialised equipment it is possible for infants as young as six months to be examined to detect the early signs of strabismus (deviating eyes) or refractive error (long-sightedness, astigmatism etc.).
Why is it so important to get children checked at a young age? The early detection of visual problems, such as amblyopia (‘lazy eye’), can make a huge difference to a child’s vision in the future. If the cause of the visual impairment can be corrected at a young age it vastly improves the prognosis for developing good quality binocular vision. Poor eyesight can impair a child’s ability to learn at school and can also be a major factor in reading disorders such as dyslexia.
But my child doesn’t know their alphabet yet. How can you check their eyes? A common misconception with a sight test is that it only involves reading letters from a chart. Whilst a visual acuity measurement is important, it is only one aspect of a child’s eye examination. Instead of letters we often use numbers, pictures or simple patterns to benchmark acuity depending on age.
Can anyone spectacles?
My child is already under the hospital for their eyes. When a child is already receiving regular eye checks at the hospital then there is no need for them to have a check at the opticians too. At each visit the hospital specialist should issue an NHS voucher that will help towards the cost of any spectacles required.
So what should I do next? Book your child in for an eye examination! You’ll be surprised at how easy it is. Tracey Campbell, F.B.D.O. Dispensing Optician Broadway Opticians, Leigh-on-Sea

No. The dispensing of spectacles is governed and regulated by the Opticians Act (1989). Rather worryingly, in the U.K. spectacles can be dispensed to adults by unregistered and unqualified persons. However, children under 16 are still protected. Spectacles can only be supplied by or under the supervision of a GOC registered optician.

Xtend Barre
The Ballet barre workout taking the fitness world by storm!
X
tend Barre is a fast-paced, 55-minute full body workout that combines Pilates with cardio elements and targets all the major muscle groups. Classes begin with an invigorating warm up which increases the heart rate and prepares students for the work ahead. Next, the upper body segment begins using light-weights to target the shoulders, biceps, triceps, and upper back muscles. During the barre portion of class, students challenge their balance, coordination, strength and flexibility with intense seat and thigh work and cardio series. Xtend Barre then engages the core deeper with an intense abdominal series performed on the floor. A calming stretch series relaxes the body and mind, concluding the Xtend Barre class. By mixing different muscle groups into every exercise, Xtend Barre strengthens the body proportionally to avoid overuse of a single muscle group. Individuals use their own body weight as resistance and the weight- bearing positions provide a total body workout without
adding bulk. Xtend Barre provides a stronger core to support a healthy body, a lifted derriere, improved posture, endurance and overall energy, increased flexibility and greater body awareness. Xtend Barre classes equally challenge aspects of stretch, strength, stability and stamina and the results benefit the total body. Individuals sweat and burn calories in addition to sculpting and toning their bodies. Clients rave about how long and lean they look (and feel). Clements Place is proud to be one of the first UK studios to offer Xtend Barre and has the exclusive license for it in the Leigh-on-Sea area. Forget soul-less gym workouts, if you want results with longer term health benefits, come and see what we have to offer! Dedicated to getting you fitter, faster. We also offer: Hot Yoga, Yoga, Pilates, Kettle Bells, Spinning, Body Pump and 1-2-1 Personal Training, Onsite Physio & Chiropractor.

Money Matters
Planning Your Estate? Don’t Leave It Too Late
T
here’s a natural reluctance for younger people to think about death and getting older. You are in all likelihood forging ahead just getting on with life, perhaps climbing up the career ladder, buying a house, settling down with a partner and having children. It’s a fast-paced world we live in and thinking about the future is often put on the back burner. After all, talk of wills, inheritance tax (IHT) and estate planning seems far removed from your day-to-day life. But they are a vital part of financial planning and wealth preservation. Getting your affairs in order could save you and your family a great deal of money and heartache. Have you thought what would happen if the unspeakable was to happen and you died tomorrow? Have you, for instance, got sufficient life cover in place to take care of the loved-ones you leave behind? Changes to the pension rules could trigger unwanted IHT . If you start to redirect your retirement savings over and above the new £50,000 limit into savings vehicles, such as ISAs or unit trusts, they will form part of your estate (not the case with pensions). It is now therefore important to consider the IHT implications when funding for your retirement. A core part of any estate planning is making
20
LEIGH-ON-SEA ORACLE
sure that you have an up-to-date will in place. Many of us are living longer, but this means that there is a greater chance that you may need someone to look after your finances when you are older in the event that you can’t. This is why people should consider appointing a relative or trusted family friend as an attorney who could step into the breach. It is just as important for those who are fit and healthy and of sound mind to have proper plans in place for the future. It is not just your own estate affairs that you need to consider. It is also worth checking that your parents or grandparents affairs are set up to mitigate as much IHT as possible as wealth is passed down through the generations. Talk of estate planning is not the cheeriest of subjects and it is easy to put something off that doesn’t affect you today, or even in the near future. But it is a vital part of financial planning and once dealt with you can rest easy that the loved ones you leave behind will be looked after.

Em-brace a younger looking you with Oralift
A
n acquaintance of mine likes to joke that her husband insists on driving everywhere so fast, that she is given a ‘non-surgical facelift’ with each trip in his sports car. I was reminded of that phrase when I first saw the incredible Oralift brace. This hygienic, plastic device that is worn in the mouth for just two hours, once every three days and really can help to tone up facial muscles, reduce wrinkles and eye bags and restore a much more youthful look to the wearer.
what I discovered. I think the Oralift is perfect for adults who have seen the effects of their advancing years and are less than thrilled by what they see in the mirror but would never contemplate having surgery or Botox injections. For them, wearing this simple brace offers a genuinely, pain-free alternative, that also works! That’s why I have decided to become the first person in South Essex to offer the Oralift treatment and it is now available at my two practices - Smiles on Broadway in Thorpe Bay and King’s Clinic in Leigh-on-Sea.
Celebrity Fame Oralift customers have also reported further anti-ageing effects such as higher cheekbones, smoother skin and a firmer jawline. Unsurprisingly, it has become a hit with celebrities and royalty alike, including Tara Palmer-Tompkinson, actress Sarah Parrish and Janan Harb, widow of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia.
Intrigued, I started to do some research and was both surprised and delighted by 22

Not Just for Smiles! Whether you’re talking or laughing whilst wearing the Oralift, you are creating positive therapy and fascinatingly, patients using Oralift have told me that while using the brace their symptoms of back, neck and shoulder pain, neuralgia and teeth grinding have been greatly alleviated. 8/10 users look younger after Janan Harb says: “This treatment has given me back my youthful look and restored the vitality to my face.

It is amazing.” A research paper in the British Dental Journal qualified this by stating that eight of ten Oralift users were judged to look up 5-10 years younger.
For more information, please call me on No Pain, All Gain! 01702 588 818 and we will be happy to Patients can be fitted with their braces at help. either practice and are also given a series of easy to follow instructions. Oralift is not painful and the treatment itself is very discreet, as the brace can be comfortably worn in the privacy of your own home whilst reading, watching TV or preparing dinner. It works by using your body’s capacity to heal itself and its ability to adapt to change. When a patient wears the Oralift appliance, it separates the upper and lower teeth by an amount much greater than the usual 1-3mm gap created when the facial muscles are relaxed. This gap is called the “free way space” and the muscles in your face can ‘recognize’ themselves.

This process involves greater protein activity for which muscles need more oxygen, and to achieve this, any capillaries which have been damaged due to ageing are repaired. This means this repair process is initiated by the muscles releasing collagen, which triggers the body's healing process, so counteracting the harmful effects of facial ageing.

But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major
factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

recipe of the month
Method Gently melt the butter in a small pan over a low heat. Place the digestives in a plastic bag and crush to fine crumbs using a rolling pin; you can also do this in a food processor. Tip them into the pan with the melted butter, stir to coat, then transfer to a 20cm spring form cake tin (9cm deep). Using the back of a spoon, press them into the base, making sure you seal the edges. Place in the fridge while you prepare the next stage.
In the Kitchen with Judy Barden
If using leaf gelatine, place in a bowl, cover with cold water, soak for 5 mins, then drain. Pour 3 tbsp boiling water over the soaked gelatine and stir to dissolve. Place the crème fraîche in a small pan with the muscovado sugars and a pinch of sea salt, then gently heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon until the mixture liquefies and the sugar has dissolved. Give the mixture a quick whisk to get rid of any lumps. It should be warm, roughly the same temperature as the gelatine solution. Stir the gelatine and vanilla extract into the crème fraîche mixture, transfer to a bowl and cool.
Caramel Cheesecake
T
his is a no-cook cheesecake and the lovely flavour comes from the malassesrich sugars so you don’t have the worry of making tricky caramel. Bit of a cheat really but fairly easy and good for entertaining.
Place the ricotta in a food processor and whizz until smooth, then add the crème fraîche mixture and whizz again. Pour this on top of the cheesecake base. Cover with cling film and chill overnight. Run a knife around the sides of the tin, then undo the clip and remove it. Transfer to a plate or leave the cheesecake on the base for ease of serving. Pile the fudge flakes in the centre and dust with icing sugar. Cover and chill until required.
Enjoy!

Selling Potential A
nyone who watches the TV or reads the newspapers will be very aware of how strong the Asian market has become for antiques and collectable items. There has been a vast increase in the amounts paid for some Chinese items and the Indian and Islamic markets are following suit as their economies grow. A Chinese vase reaching £43 million hit the headlines, albeit it was never paid for.
This Indian ivory box sold for over £2,000
they are looking to the UK particularly for things to buy. If you have items you think may fit the bill and may even be a potential “lottery win” then pop in to your nearest auction house and get them checked out. You never know what you may have been hoarding all these years. This Chinese bowl went for £3,000
O
This opens up a great opportunity for people who have been hoarding things from previous generations, who perhaps travelled in the far east, to cash in while the market is hot, and there is no certainty it will stay that way. The best results seem to be coming from the provincial auction rooms which are on line, such as our own, because buyers perceive that they may find a bargain there, even though they will be competing in basically the same market as a major London saleroom. The demand isn’t just confined to ceramics, as you might expect, but extends right across the board to jades, jewellery, wood carvings, stone seals, pictures, ivories and even postcards. To make the best prices things need not be ancient but should usually be pre-1950 and be in good condition.

T
he defining UK girl band of the modern pop era, since they debuted with Sound Of The Underground in 2002, Girls Aloud have had 20 top ten singles and four #1s. Each of their five albums have gone platinum or above. In total they have sold over eight million records and have clocked up over 45 million You Tube views, close to six million Facebook likes and three million Twitter followers. Ten is a collection of the BRIT award-winning group’s singles over the last ten years as well as four new songs, which the girls have worked on over the past year.
By Jan 2011 Modestep found themselves on the Radio 1 A-List and the hottest unsigned property in UK music. A&M won the race to their signatures, with the band creating their own imprint Max Records. Since then the band have toured relentlessly, smashing it at Festivals all over the world. The band has played to 1.5 million people in 2012 alone - making Modestep a truly international act, able to sell out gigs all over the world. They finally release their debut album 'Evolution Theory' on 11th February, supported by a UK tour which stops off at London's KOKO on 14th Feb.
February sees them head out on a UK wide Arena tour with two nights at The 02, London on the 1st & 2nd March.

They gave the exclusive to dubstep Youtube channel UKF and within weeks it had 4 million hits.

Paloma Faith comes to the Lees Cliff Hall in Southend on the 8th February as part of her UK Tour that will see her playing songs from her stunning sophomore album 'Fall To Grace' which was released last year and just held off the No.1 spot by Gary Barlow’s Jubilee album. Paloma is really starting to blow up in the US so being able to see her in Southend is more than likely going to be a one-off so certainly a show to catch.
