Shoebury Common Flood Defence by Peter Lovett
I
was born and bred in Southend, but retired & moved to Shoebury in 2010 and have fallen in love with the uniqueness of Shoebury Common & the tranquillity along the promenade. When Ray Bailey informed me that Southend Council want to build a 2 metre high secondary sea wall through our Common, starting October 2012 with completion in March 2013, I was shocked. What a surprise that this coincided with removal of soil from the Cliffs?
The more I investigated the answers, the more questions evolved and the more I wanted to find the truth. Why was there no transparency? Why was the information not consistent? Why are only certain questions answered? Why are the facts different on other projects? I joined with Ray & Peter Grubb (Uncle Toms) in August 2012 and the first question raised was “Where are the 500 homes at risk of flooding”? They gave us their flood map showing about 80 homes, but with no further comment since. It became clearer later when we were told about a developer who wanted to build 450 homes on a level 3 flood plain, but needed this flood defence to obtain planning permission. They apparently offered a six-figure sum subject to planning approval. (Echo 24th April 2013).
I tried to attend the consultation meeting at the Yacht Club, but could not get near the displays. I downloaded details from Southend Council’s website and was surprised by what I saw. I thought I would obtain facts to support future flooding on the Common, but all I could find was Predicting sea level rises between 200mm & “predictions”. 950mm is difficult, but at least history proves that 1953 was the worst Storm for over 300 years, causing 58 deaths on Canvey, 7 at Great Wakering & 2 in Southend. Shoebury Common had minor flooding and as all roads run uphill, even breaches in sea defences at Gunner Park contained on the flood plain, with no damage to the Common or Uncle Toms. Nobody can predict major storms in the future, but although the council have £4.6m to invest in Shoebury, you would think they would consult the residents / businesses and find a JUNE 2013

defence wall, but surely you should include the total cost, including the maintenance over 50+ years and the repairs / replacement of the existing sea wall? Compassionate requests from an 11-year-old girl saying “Please stop them building this wall on my Common” or a widower who said, “I paid for a bench because my loved-one enjoyed the views”. None of the 19 questions have been answered.
compromise, but despite intelligent concerns, nobody is listening to them. Like the councillors, we care about our neighbours, but this must also include consultation not dictatorship. When the preferred option was first made public, we queried “common sense” issues about disabled access, security, crossing the road through a floodgate / cycle path, reversing boat trailers through floodgates at the slipway and the 1.8 metre high wall being extended to St Augustines Avenue, where the promenade is two metres higher. We were amazed when all these concerns were included in the councils “revised” preferred option 2013 shown on their website. They even used our design by sloping the wall away from the cycle path, next to the sea wall with separate foundations, but we have not been paid over £80,000 in consultation fees.
We offered an alternative design, which included raising the promenade and constructing a new 700mm wall in front of the existing. Supported by APS Designs, we created a set of drawings that depicted greater detail & clear graphics, with accurate views from all directions. We thought this would reduce public costs by eliminating very expensive floodgates, walls, disabled ramps, lighting & landscaping the soil from the cliffs, but the council said our alternative scheme was £6.8m.
The support we have had is unbelievable and with over 2,000 emails in 3 months, it has been a full time passion. Intelligent questions like “We know it is £4.6m to build the secondary flood Apparently, this included beach re-charge at £3m, six disabled ramps at £270,000, £60,000 for new shelters, £820,000 for the soil, £100,000 for gas modifications, £172,000 for lighting & £100,000 for repairing the existing storm drains. If you support our challenge email peterlovett46@gmail.com We thank all our supporters, the Echo, APS Designs, Circle Printing & others for helping us to create a better future for Shoebury Common, but the fight goes on. Think About Lighting Hallway lighting is often forgotten, but this is one way to really create ambience. Pendant lights give good functional light - and are a great way to add decoration to a hallway. Think about a period-style chandelier or striking modern light fitting to create an eye-catching feature. If your ceiling is low, recessed ceiling lights are a great alternative. If you have space for a console table you could add a lamp which gives a really inviting homely feel almost immediately. A few well chosen pictures, a vase of flowers or other decorative items will complete the look.
A warm welcome By Samantha Gundy
Ban the Clutter
L
ast month we explored the exterior of our home. Now we are taking a step into the hallway, the spine of the house. This is the starting point for creating the mood and tone of your home.
Finally, If you have an understairs cupboard, use it wisely. Add coat hooks and shelving to remove all the day to day items that can clutter this area. Less is most definitely more when it comes to a welcoming Hallway.
Setting the scene Don’t be afraid to experiment with paints and papers in the hallway. Use sample pots, paint onto some card and place your samples around various points of the hallway, paying attention to the darker areas. Stand back and assess the colours at different times of the day.
For a modern classic consider walls in Hardwick White (Farrow&Ball), with Shirting Eggshell woodwork (Little Greene) and Slaked Lime (Little Greene) on the ceilings. Add some black picture frames and a deep red stair runner if you’re bold enough and you’ve got an immediately glamorous hallway that will be the envy of your visitors .

Use designer tips too -for example stop your hallway looking like a corridor, you can use colour to alter its appearance. Using lighter shades on the long walls and a darker colour to complement on the far wall that will make the space appear wider, but not as deep. You could try Cornforth White and Dove Tale in Modern Emulsion from Farrow and Ball.

Get the Gatsby look Y
ou might not remember reading F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel at school, but the glitz and glamour of The Great Gatsby is everywhere right now thanks to the latest big screen version starring Leonardo di Caprio and Carey Mulligan which has just hit the cinemas. So right now the classic hair and beauty looks of the roaring 1920’s are THE look to have – so let’s see how we can help you achieve them.
Think your grandma could learn a few things about modern makeup? Well, darling, she could teach you a few tricks about how the ladies of Gatsby did beauty, too! To get that authentic Gatsby era makeup, keep your eye makeup dark. Heavy layers of black eyeliner topped with dark grey eyeshadow and the occasional pop of turquoise or green complete the look. Eyebrows back then were very high, thin and arched, usually drawn in with pencil.Want to steal the look? Cover your normal eyebrows using nose putty or soap, Use concealer or camouflage makeup to hide them by blending with your skin tone, then draw away. Red lips and nails were red hot in the 20’s.
The flappers sure knew a thing or two about making a hair statement - all those sleek, slicked back bobs and bejewelled headbands certainly make us nostalgic for a time long past. Start off by creating a side part. Next, smooth your hair with your straighteners. Now, it's time to part your hair into 3 sections – one on the back and Slip into something with feather and sequins then one each side. Lifting the back section, spray and you’re all ready to party Gatsby style – hair underneath. After spraying, tease the bottom have a champagne cocktail for me! layer towards the scalp and cover your Sponsored by remaining hair on top. Now it's time to create your faux bob! Roll the back section up and inward at the nape, and pin. Repeat on the side sections. Shape your fringe into a smooth wave on the right side of your face and spray. Finish off the look with some fun accessories to give your 32 Alexandra St., Southend SS1 1BU look that 20s flair! 01702 340965 JUNE 2013 LEIGH-ON-SEA ORACLE www.oraclepublications.co.uk 18

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major
factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Your local Conservatives I
n challenging times, our local Conservatives continue to deliver quality value for money services in Southend.
These are challenging times for local councils. Over the last 6 years the Conservative Administration has delivered over £50M of year on year savings from a net budget of £139M whilst at the same time driving up service performance and being recognised as “Council of the Year”. The next few years do not look like being any easier as we will need to continue to deliver substantial savings whilst dealing with increased demand on our services, inflationary pressures and balancing the need to invest in social care, education, our parks and libraries, highway maintenance and our other core services. We have shown that we can take difficult decisions in a balanced and measured way. The opposition parties have failed to propose any deliverable alternatives and whilst they “cherry pick” specific items to oppose they have consistently failed to identify a corresponding saving. In the meantime we continue to develop other ways of subsidising our services in a way that avoids excessive hikes in council tax rates or increases in parking charges.
assets and creating council owned trading companies to make profit from our successful services by selling to other councils and the private sector and using the profit to subsidise the provision of services in Southend. In a few months time our new Forum Library will open as a joint venture with Essex University and South Essex College. It will give access to the public to a wide range of academic materials as well as sharing operating costs between the 3 organisations. It is an example of how even in these difficult times there are opportunities to develop services to meet the demands of modern life and that we have a Conservative Administration which is ready to rise to that challenge.

If you are scared of the dentist, then this is the lady you need to see… Childhood tooth trauma made Dee determined to be the dentist you actually look forward to visiting
W
hen I was young, my first experience of a dentist was when I was told I needed to have a filling in my baby tooth. I was absolutely petrified and my friends really didn’t help by telling me it was going to be very painful. And sadly that first dentistry experience lived up to all those bad expectations I had. I remember sitting there in that chair and really wishing there was a gentle, kind and patient dentist I could see who would make all my fears of the dentist go away. I wanted a person who would genuinely understand why I was so scared and do all they could to make my panic vanish whilst also doing their best to make my treatment as smooth and painless as possible.
For me dentistry is all about those little details that make a big difference to a patient’s experience – both my surgeries are designed around that philosophy. I know the sound of drill can be quite disconcerting, but unfortunately for the time being the drill is an integral part of dentistry - so I came up with the idea of providing music headphones for patients which help drown out the drilling sound. Another problem for patients is where to look – you need something to distract
Sadly that never materialised, so as I grew older I became determined that the only thing for it was for me to become that gentle, kind, patient and honest dentist myself. That decision led me to university where I trained as a dentist and I now practise at two clinics in Southend - King’s Clinic in Leigh-on-Sea and Smiles on Broadway in Thorpe Bay. you and take your minds off what is happening, so on the ceiling above my dentists chair is a TV screen to occupy your eyes and thoughts. I hate injections just as much as you so I go that extra mile to ensure they are as painless as possible. I gently numb the target area of the mouth first with a soft, soothing gel before introducing the needle, so hopefully you will hardly feel it once I inject. X-rays can be really uncomfortable too, having to put quite a big piece of plastic in your mouth, so I will always do a relaxing breathing exercise with my patients first to help them prepare for what is coming and make it less stressful. Also there is nothing worse than holding your mouth open for ages – it hurts! – so I finish off extended treatments with a jaw and neck massage. I also understand a lot of the time the jargon that we dentists say makes no rhyme or reason so I always endeavour to be patient and speak in terms that the patient understands as I explain the treatment and advice. And all our decisions will be based on what is best for you AND your wallet. JUNE 2013
As well as your day to day check up’s, fillings and extractions, I can also offer a variety of speciality treatments such as implants, cosmetic dentistry and appliances to help treat clenching, grinding and jaw joint problems. I work really hard to ensure my skills are constantly updated as I think it is really important to keep all treatments under one roof so patients know that they are getting all the treatments they could possibly get from their one dentist they know and trust. My fear of the dentist has never left me, so now every time I treat a patient I put myself back in that dental chair and remember how scared I was looking up at that person as they treated me, and wanting to be treated with that same gentle care that I now deliver to my patients. It means I always strive to be gentle and caring - and I think I’m getting there as my patients tell me it is like having butterflies in their mouths!

Quarter each short crust pastry sheet and use to line 8 x 10cm loose bottomed tart tins. Place the tarts in the fridge or freezer to chill.
2. Meanwhile cook the peas in a saucepan of salted boiling water for 3-4 minutes until tender. Drain then add the knob of butter and a pinch of sugar, cool slightly and then blitz half in a food processor or with a hand blender until you have a smooth puree. Place in a bowl with the remaining peas then add the egg, egg yolk, chopped mint and cream. Beat well with a wooden spoon to combine and then add three-quarters of the goat’s cheese. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and set aside.
3. Place the tarts on a large baking sheet, lightly prick the bases with a fork, then line with baking parchment and baking beans or rice. Bake blind for 10 minutes in the oven, then remove the beans and paper and bake for a further 3-5 mins until just dried out.

In Bloom H
opefully the last few weeks media coverage of Chelsea has fired your imagination or at the very least coerced you into sorting out what is now, and for the next few months, the best room in the house. A good landscaper will be required for any construction but gardening is open to all so here’s some tips on buying and planting.
few pots of organic compost and a small handful of chicken pellets (or other fertilizer) and mix in some of the topsoil. Hold the plant down into a bucket of water until no more air bubbles appear. Tease some of the roots out thus breaking the circular shape and position the plant in the hole ensuring its best side is on show.
Check the leaves – they should be a rich green (unless indicated otherwise on the accompanying picture) and unblemished. The stems should be sturdy and spread evenly around the central stem. The compost on top of the plant should be free of moss and liverworts but don’t worry too much about the odd weed seedling. The root system of any plant is the key indicator of its health, so don’t be afraid to remove the pot and have a good look. Thick, plentiful roots should encircle the compost. Don’t worry if some roots protrude from the bottom but don’t buy any plant if its pot is distorted from excess roots as this indicates neglect.
Check the top of the rootball is level with the surrounding soil and firm it in with the remaining soil. Level and tidy the area and spread a few inches of compost around the plant to keep in the moisture. Water the plant either early each morning or night for the next few weeks until it has settled in. Final tip – shop around as small nurseries will often stock plants and trees you won’t find in the larger garden centres. Enjoy.
O
Give your plant the best start Before planting, take some time to prepare the hole – you’ve just spent valuable time and good money so it pays to give the plant the best start you can. Dig a planting hole roughly three times the width and twice the depth of the pot. Add a

Money Matters
Ensure your pension pot lasts as long as you do by Jacqui Moyies
O
nce in a blue moon your local newspaper salutes a local resident who has reached the grand-old age of 100. Yet by all accounts, local papers may soon have to devote an entire weekly page to people living to 100 because we are living much longer. It will lighten many moods to learn that the total number of centenarians is projected to rise from 14,500 in 2012 to 110,000 in 2035. It’s estimated that 13% of males and 18.2% females aged 50 in 2012 will reach their landmark 100 year birthday. And of your new born children, around one-third of babies born in 2012 in the United Kingdom are expected to survive to celebrate their 100th birthday (Source: Office for National Statistics, March 2012). Of course, people living longer will have an impact on our pensions and long term care systems and, perhaps more importantly, it will greatly affect your own plans. Many people will have an assortment of different pension schemes having worked for different employers, while many will have also made the most of their Pep, Tessa and Isa tax allowances of the years. They need to turn this non-pension money into an income stream that might be needed for another 30 to 40 years. There are also tax implications to consider, be it capital gains, inheritance tax or income tax liabilities. Investors need to ensure they are using all their available tax-free allowances and ensuring they are paying as little tax as they need. After all you work hard, paying your taxes all your
34
LEIGH-ON-SEA ORACLE
life, you don’t want to be needlessly paying HMRC after you have retired. The traditional ways of planning for retirement are past their sell-by date. How lavish, comfortable or tough your retirement years will be is going to be down to you. You simply cannot afford to rely on the state or your employer any more generous final salary schemes are fast disappearing. That’s why it is important to get planning early. There is nothing stopping you from getting a clear view of your current position by establishing what your likely state pension entitlement would be. Examine whether you are on track or whether you may have to consider making extra contributions. Many companies that have replaced final salary schemes with defined contribution pension schemes contribute far less now, putting the onus on the employee to boost their pension pot. It is great to think that we have a higher chance of living longer, but it means that we have to make our money work harder while we can – and the sooner you start the better.

Health & Beauty
Anyone for Tennis? W imbledon will soon be on the telly again. That means a not insignificant percentage of the population will have been inspired to dust off their racquets and head to the nearest tennis court. Whether you’re just hoping to improve your social game or a serious enthusiast aiming to win the club title, with a little extra effort you can improve both your tennis and your health.
Aside from the mental aspects of temperament, tactical awareness and the ability to cope under pressure, what makes a great tennis player? The better your posture is the less energy it’s going to take to get through a match, and the more quickly you’ll recover from your exertions. You’ll also pick up fewer injuries – for example, if you walk around with rounded shoulders your ability to extend your arm overhead becomes compromised, as does the integrity of the shoulder joint. And being able to lift your arm overhead in tennis is pretty essential! Good core strength and stability – by that I mean your torso and internal organs. Given the dynamic nature of tennis - at whatever level it’s played - you need to have a strong core to protect you and your spine from all the twisting and turning it’s exposed to during a match.
then it’s pointless spending hours performing steady-state exercise on the bike or rowing machine. Tennis is a stop-start game rather than a constant one, so you are better off performing regular interval training regularly.
Whilst you don’t need the strength of an Olympic weightlifter to play good tennis, a decent level of overall strength will help your body stand up to the rigours of a match and allow you to put more into your serves, shots and strokes. To build strength that carries over from the gym to the tennis court, use exercises involving bodyweight, free weights and cables. Regardless of whether you play for the fun or social aspects or because you’re serious about your sport, train and exercise with tennis in mind and you’ll end up improving both your health, and your game. Remember I offer a free consultation to anyone who is looking to make positive changes to their health and fitness, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Obviously you need a good level of fitness – but if you’ve got designs to play more than two sets,
