T

his month Oracle has a new article written by guest writer Warren Higgins. Warren works within the music business and has written a review on Essex lad and X Factor winner, Matt Cardle’s new album release. Judy is busy again trying to get us organised before that Christmas rush and this month’s recipe is perfect for that and looks delicious. Craig’s article this month concentrates on giving those brave ladies and gentlemen advice on how to deal with their new hair growth after chemo. Butt-Busters, the newly opened studio in Leigh, are offering its clients a very new and innovative way to tone their bodies and lose weight. Butt-Busters have kindly donated a prize for this month’s Leigh Oracle competition, the chance for one lucky Leigh reader to win a course of 10 x 10 minute sessions worth £35. I suggest you check out their website for further details on www.butt-buster.com To enter simply send in your contact details to, Oracle/Butt-Busters Competition, 39 Alexandra Street, Southend-on-Sea, Essex SS1 1BW or email info@oraclepublications.co.uk closing date 29 November 2012. Be a Christmas Sparkle, not a Christmas Pudding! L

adies of Leigh, you have time to feel fabulous and drop a dress size in time for your Christmas parties. 10 minutes on our amazing Butt-Buster machine is the equivalent of an hour in the gym, without breaking a sweat, whilst you stand & relax, wearing a dress or jeans, watching TV! The Butt-Buster machine has two vibration motors – one which acts like the ‘power plates’ seen in gyms, vibrating up and down - the other pivots like a seesaw. When being pivotally vibrated from side to side, the core muscles work to balance you, thus strengthening them. This in turn, in 10 minutes, burns up to 300 calories, burns fat, increases metabolism, loses inches, reduces cellulite and improves lymphatic

drainage to rid the body of excess fluid. Other reported benefits are an increase in circulation, energy & vitality in the day and at night, a deeper sleep. It also helps keep the monthly bloated feeling and discomfort at bay and eases constipation.

Tummy, Thighs and Bottom Buster After using the Butt-Buster machine in a standing position for 3 or 4 times a week over a period of a month you will notice an increase in core strength and stability. With a stronger core established you can quickly move on to target stubborn areas – tummy, thighs & bottom. For these you adopt The ‘Tummy Buster’ crunch position, or ‘Thigh Buster’ lunge, or ‘Bottom Buster’squat position on the machine, hold each for 10 seconds, repeat and continue alternating them for the 10mins. This equates to an hour of repetitive sit-ups, lunges and squats. You can have a gym honed body, without the gym clothes, sweat, pain and time. The core strength builder is especially good for new Mums whose core is knocked out after having a baby. From the 6 week check you can pop in with your prams and start building up your core muscles and pelvic floor again and help shift the excess fluid and inches of a post baby body. Mums with babies, toddlers and

young children are also welcome and there is space to park a buggy next to the machine so your child can watch you wobble. We have a toy box to keep them amused too. It is possible to Drop a Dress Size in a month with a healthy diet and brisk walking. We, the Butt-Buster Girls are on hand to support and encourage you on your quest to get trim. Remember ‘Nothing Tastes as good as Thin Feels!’ Bear this in mind when shopping for food or eating out. We have produced a list of helpful tips which are on our website and leaflets to support you while using the machines to achieve the best results.

A few tips Be honest with yourself, don’t have chocolate in the house if you can’t stop at two pieces a day. Cut down portion size - we all overeat and simply cutting down portion size makes you slimmer, less weighed down and less tired. Our bodies do not need as much food as we put in them! Drink 2 litres of filtered/bottled a day & limit alcohol. Brush & floss your teeth after meals to stop snacking.

Eat treat size sugar snacks and cakes and stop at that. We, the Butt-Buster girls look forward to meeting you. It is suitable for all ages of ladies who want to look and feel better fast. The windows are obscured and there are partitions to protect our clients from wobbling in public view. Together we can battle the bulge and have a giggle at the wobbly bits along the way! Single 10 min session - £5 Course of 10 x 10 min sessions - £35 so £3.50 a go!

No appointment is necessary just pop in. We are open: Mon to Fri 9am to 8pm Sat 10am to 6pm. Come as you are, take off your shoes, shake on the Butt-Buster & start to look & feel great!

D

o you have bounds of energy, enjoy working as a part of an enthusiastic team and have a little time to spare? Do you want to help make a difference to people’s lives in your local community? If yes, than you could be a great asset to a Havens Hospices local fundraising group. Local fundraising groups are teams of people who donate their time to organising events and activities from coffee mornings to sponsored bike rides, all to raise funds for Essex based charity.

Who are Havens Hospices? Havens Hospices is a registered charity that incorporates Fair Havens Hospice and Little Havens Hospice. Both hospices offer respite and care for adults and children with life-limiting illnesses. When a family has been told there’s no cure for their loved one’s illness, the hospices are there to make the journey as comfortable as possible, controlling pain and medication and allowing family to spend quality time together in the hospice or in the comfort of their own homes. Hilary Metcalfe, Community Fundraiser from Havens Hospices said,“We must raise over £100,00 each week to be there for everyone who needs us. We do not charge a penny for our care, which means the hospices simply could not exist without supporters like local fundraising groups, who donate their time and effort so generously.” NOVEMBER

2012

What do local fundraising groups do? Local fundraising groups act as the face of Havens Hospices in their local communities, promoting the work of the charity, organising fundraising events and encouraging other local people to fundraise. This year, the charity’s eight community fundraising groups have raised almost £30,000 for the charity, all through organising their own events. Hilary added, “Whether you have a few hours spare on the weekend or perhaps just a couple of hours a month, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved. This could mean helping to promote our campaigns or organising or volunteering at a local fundraising event.” Local groups are given the power to shape the way they want to fundraise in their communities whilst receiving expert support and advice from the charity right the way through the year. Tony Cheek, who is part of the ‘Friends of The Hospices’ fundraising group said, “One week you might be organising a street collection, then the next holding a black tie event. It’s completely up to us what kind of events we want to hold. It could be something new every week, which is what makes it so exciting.”

LEIGH ORACLE - Nov 2012_Layout 1 31/10/2012 14:32 Page 10

As well as organising their own events, fundraising groups also support organised events in their community.

Why join? Joining a local fundraising group can be a really exciting experience and a great way to have a lot of fun whilst raising money for local families in need of care. Hilary Metcalfe says, “What’s so fantastic about local fundraising groups is that you meet people from all walks of life, all joining together with the same goal; to raise vital funds for local families in need of care and support. You might be creative, good with numbers or a confident public speaker, whatever it is, every person can bring something unique to the team.” Tony Cheek, who’s been a member of local fundraising group ‘Friends of Havens Hospices’ for 4 years says, “I’d recommend joining a group to anyone who wants to make friends and get involved with the local community. We have a lot of fun and it’s made all the better knowing that every penny we raise is going to care for people who need the love and support Havens Hospices provides. Since our group formed, we’ve raised over £41,000 for the charity, which we’re all very proud of.”

Havens Hospices can only exist because of people like those in local fundraising groups. By joining a group, you’d be a part of raising vital funds for the charity and helping them to fulfil their mission of ‘making every day count’ for the people they care for.

To join... If you’re interested in joining a fundraising group for Havens Hospices in your area or would like to find out more information, please get in touch with Hilary on 07891 514187 or email hmetcalfe@havenshospices.org.uk. Alternatively, take a look at what some of our fundraising groups have been up to at www.havenshospices.org.uk or join us on Facebook or Twitter.

Award winning Butcher, back by popular demand. T

he Butcher of Barling, Philip Splett has decided to reopen his shop to the public. Here we ask why.

What made you reopen Philip? Well I originally decided to retire on the 1st January 2012 after working in the butchery business for over 60 years. Although the shop was not open I was still supplying my famous Barling Beauties sausages to a few local pubs and my existing clients were ordering meat from me on a regular basis. Everywhere I went I bumped into customers of mine who bemoaned the fact that I had closed. Butchery is in my blood and I made a decision to reopen the shop again to existing and new customers from November.

had shops in Benfleet,Woodgrange Drive,Thorpe Bay and latterly Barling. I would class myself as an old fashioned style or artisan butcher. The meat is prepared through minimum use of cleavers or saws but by utilising the natural seams and muscles as nature intended.

Is there a call for an old fashioned butcher? I have seen the role of the butcher change. The days of meat hanging on show with sawdust on the floors are thankfully long gone. However supermarkets are increasingly stocking foreign meat cut to set sizes with little room for alteration.

What is your experience? Splett Family Butchers has been in existence since 1950 when my father opened his shop in London’s Leather Lane. I helped my father in his shop and went to Smithfield learning as much about the meat trade as I could. I was fortunate to train as a Master Butcher under an expert who provided meat to the Royal Family. After I qualified I took over from my father and moved down to Southend and

The service I provide gives advice on what cut is best for whichever dish is being cooked and producing that cut to meet the budget or size required. I pride myself on being able to make customers feel at ease and enjoy their shopping experience. There is also a number of TV chefs who are using types and cuts of meat, such as venison, which can only be sourced from quality butchers.

Where is your meat sourced? I have my own experienced buyer on Smithfield who selects meat to my specification. Smithfield is still the UK’s premier meat market. I stock Aberdeen Angus Scotch Beef, Saltmarsh reared Lamb and rare bread pork. Fresh poultry come from Suffolk, Norfolk and local farms. All the meat is British and is fresh when delivered and allowed to hang to provide the best possible taste and texture. I aim to provide the best quality products when in season at affordable prices. Certainly there is a marked difference in flavour for instance when Beef is allowed to age naturally.

What can you provide us with? The simple answer is anything providing enough notice is given. All types of meat, offal and game. I am happy to take bulk orders where for instance half a pig or lamb can be bought and the customer can specify what types of joints or chops they want. I am currently taking orders for Christmas for local fresh turkeys and geese. These can be on the bone, crowns or boned and rolled. There is no additional cost to the customer in having this work undertaken, it is all part of my service. I produce my own bacon which is cured in the old fashioned way and has a taste unlike anything bought in the supermarkets. I am famous for my sausages,

particularly the Barling Beauties and regularly have many varieties in stock. Cheeses are from the Snowdonia Cheese Company, Suffolk natural hams, Haggis and the famous Stornoway black puddings. For Christmas we are again stocking hot smoked Salar salmon from the Isle of South Uist.

Do you have anything to entice us with? As an opening offer in November I am providing my unique chicken parcel, which is boned chicken stuffed with my own recipe filling. Plus a Vintage Mature Cheddar Snowdonia Cheese truckle at a bargain price of ÂŁ9.95 (as featured in the main photo). Please feel free to call by and say hallo or visit me on my website and join the mailing list to receive regular offers. The website is www.philipsplett.com. Orders can be placed by email through the website or call 216062 or text 07768972579. I look forward to welcoming you all existing and new customers to Burtons Farm Shop, Barling Road, Barling Magna, SS3 0LZ.

Oracle Hair & Beauty

Chemo Curls for Brave Girls M

y column this month is dedicated to Oracle reader Maggi Hobbs from Great Wakering who recently wrote to me saying “Could you do a column on the plight of us post chemotherapy girls (and guys) – we could do with your advice!” So Maggi, this is especially for you and other ladies and gents in your position. The loss of your crowning glory is, sadly, a common side effect of chemotherapy. The treatment also affects hair regrowth, as the drugs involved attack the roots of your hair and its pigment.Towards the end of treatment your hair will start to come back, but when your locks do return, their texture and colour may be very different to your original hair. Patients may experience kinky, curly, coarse, or even fine ‘baby’ hair.We like to call this Chemo Curls. Your new hair can look and feel like a really bad perm,so it makes sense to treat it that way. Use a very mild shampoo, such as baby shampoo or products for dry or damaged hair. When shampooing your chemo curls, massage your scalp to increase circulation to your roots and remove any dry, flaky skin.Avoid using very hot water because your scalp may be tender. After your shampoo, put on a leave-in conditioner for fine or limp hair.

pinning can break brittle chemo curls. Put away your hair straighteners, just for now, as the heat can burn your sore scalp. Styling products that offer a light hold are ideal,as they are easy to wash out and won't make your hair look synthetic.Go for water-based products whenever you can find them because they are kind and healthy for your hair, and the environment! Hair that is shorter than three inches is very difficult to style and manage so your scalp is still tender, please wait until it recovers and then consult your hairdresser for help with any colour or permanent wave treatments. Make sure you get the ends of your hair trimmed every month until your locks returns to their normal texture. In 6-12months, most of your chemo curls will be gone and you can try some new and exciting hairstyles with your short hair. And be proud of it – your new hair is a sign of your bravery and determination in surviving cancer. It really is your crowning glory.

Dry your hair gently by patting it with a thick, absorbent towel, or use a low heat setting on your hair dryer. Style your new hair gently - vigorous brushing, combing and

Money Matters

Pensions – Plan now for that long holiday H

ow does the idea of a holiday lasting perhaps 20 or 30 years sound? No more work, just a permanent break, pleasing yourself what you do every day for the rest of your life.

earlier you make a start, the easier it is to create the lifestyle you want. And in doing so, take into account that pensions still represent the best option when investing for retirement.

It sounds very enticing – and it’s called retirement. The only snag, of course, is that you have to pay for it in advance. And the earlier you start paying for it, the better your lifestyle is going to be when you finally give up going to work.

Whatever choices you make, do take action now. We are living to a greater age and retirement is going to last longer in the future. As a result, it is essential to save more. The decisions you make today will help determine the standard of living likely to be enjoyed in retirement. But the longer you leave it to take action, the more expensive it will be to catch up.

If you don’t, you are running a serious risk of outliving your savings once you have stopped working. So how much are you going to need to fund this long-lasting holiday? The simplest way to find out is to work out your magic number. This helps you calculate how much your pension fund should be to give you the retirement income you want. By taking into account all your likely living costs, calculate how much annual income you think you might need if you were to retire at the age of 65, allowing for inflation. Multiply this figure by 25 and this gives you your magic number – the retirement fund you will need based on current annuity rates. The next important step is to start planning for your retirement – and to do so now. The 20

I am passionate about showcasing what fantastic things the county has to offer, in order to create a memorable dining experience full of new textures and flavours. My aim is that the 1935 Rooftop Restaurant and Bar will become a renowned venue, not only for airport visitors but also people across Essex.”

From there, he worked at The Savoy for five years, before completing his training under Marco Pierre White at the Michelin-starred Harvey’s for a further two years. recipe of the month In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

2 large free-range eggs, hard-boiled and chopped, plus 1 beaten free-range egg, for glazing Plain flour, for dusting 2 x 500g packs fresh puff pastry 900g piece salmon tail fillet

Method 1. Heat the butter and oil in a pan over a low heat and cook the onion for 5-6 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook for 5-8 minutes. Stir in the turmeric and cook for 1 minute, then add the rice, herbs, capers, zest and chopped egg. Season and cool.

2. On a floured board, roll out 1 piece of pastry to pound coin-thickness and trim to a 30cm x 20cm rectangle. Put on a large baking sheet and place the salmon on the pastry. Season, then arrange the rice mixture on top. Brush the pastry edges with beaten egg. Roll out the remaining pastry, so it will generously cover the salmon, and lay over the top. Trim, leaving a 2cm border, and press the pastry together to seal. Use any pastry trimmings to decorate the top.

I was recently able to help a lady in the final stages of clearing a property which had obviously had some very lovely things in it. She began by telling me that the family had done a boot sale with the first things they had sorted out and had raised about £300, which she found very exciting. Sadly the first item she mentioned, that they had sold, would have raised more than that in auction on its own so goodness knows what else went with it.

Matt Cardle:

‘My new album is more honest’ By Warren Higgins

S

ince winning the X Factor back in 2010, Essex lad Matt Cardle has done a full circle. The 29-year-old has a platinum-selling debut album, “Letters”, changed record companies, but “The Fire”, his second album out on the 29th October on So What? Recordings, is a much more honest affair.

Matt Cardle ‘The Fire’ 29th october, Polydor Records

“The Fire” see’s Cardle playing most of the instruments and even producing the album, “It was much nicer being in control as much as I was, this was how I wrote and produced all of my albums before the X Factor, so I didn’t feel out of my comfort zone, it was just a very natural process. Across the board, it’s gone absolutely fantastically,” Matt draws on a lot of his personal expericnes over the past couple of years for his material, he explained: “It’s prominently about the break-up of my relationship earlier this year. It was tough and I was going through all that whilst I was writing the album. That being said, the album’s very upbeat and very uplifting.” While there’s a particular sound for X factor winners, “The Fire” turns up the guitars taking Matt back to the Essex rock bands he played in before the competition ”The change in sound is also similar to why the looks changed as I’m getting closer to myself and getting back to

what I do and what I’ve always done. Just everything’s a bit more honest really.” “It’s Only Love” will be the first single to be released from the album. Talking about the choice, he said: “I wanted to come back out with something really upbeat and something really driving. I just thought it was a great choice for the first single. Prior to the album’s release, Cardle will embark on a short UK tour, which begins at the Birmingham Institute on October 21st, before finishing with an album launch show at The Scala in London on the 23rd. “I’m excited and nervous at the same time! But I just cannot wait to get back on stage with the band and see how the songs translate on stage live,” said Cardle.

Lawson ‘Chapman Square’ 29th october, Polydor Records

London based pop band LAWSON grafted hard for 4 years doing the pub and club circuit before their big break supporting The Wanted last year. Since then, they’ve sold out their own tours and gained two top 5 singles. Their debut LP ‘Chapman Square’ certainly lives up to expectations. Stand out tracks include ‘Learn To Love Again’ and ‘Gone’ plus brand new single ‘Standing In The Dark’.
