No style is complete without a great colour. Get noticed for yours and choose a beautiful colour for the coming season that not only complements your style, but will make you stand out from the crowd. For you blondes, it’s less of a sun-kissed, back from holiday look and more an autumnal glow. Take your shade down a few tones by weaving caramels, toffees and honeys through the hair to add warmth and shine.

Stay cool in Autumn/Winter 2011

Red hair continues to be the colour of the season, and whatever shade you choose, it’s not just a hair colour, it’s an attitude. Whether you opt for copper, cherry, mahogany or a deep wine, you’ll be in good company, as stars such as Blake Lively, Florence Welch and Rihanna continue to express their fiery side. For your brand new look for the coming season, why not call Jerry Bell Hairdressing, The Broadway, Thorpe Bay on 01702 588 404 to book your appointment.

S

ummer’s gone for another year as the world around us turns into a rustic vision of reds, browns and yellows. But don’t get blue; it’s the start of a whole new season and A/W 2011 promises to be more exciting than ever! With lots of beautiful trends and colours for you to choose from, it’s time for a whole new you. Let your new look go to your head with advice from Jerry Bell Hairdressing.

The Inbetweeners Growing out your crop, a la Emma Watson, is so in style. The great news is, for ladies that like it short, the boy crop, or ‘Bop’, is so on trend right nor. Styled shabby and textured, curly on top or sleek and smooth, there’s a look for you. Currently trying to grow your hair? There is hope, as mid-lengths prove to be the most versatile. Flicks are back and in 2011, they are sexier than ever, more Farrah Fawcett than Anthea Turner, think Molly King and Una Healy from The Saturdays. The 70’s ‘Charlie’s Angels’ look is back, and big is most definitely beautiful.

Compassion comes to Shoebury

A

Member of our Fellowship, Johan Weber, a local Dentist, who was originally from South Africa, brought the concept of "Compassion" to us. The interest was immediate, and one of Compassion's workers came to see us. Compassion is an international charity with an English office in Weighbridge. Eighty-Five percent of any sponsorship money reaches its designated target. It is a Christian charity, and is ruthless in its budgetary controls. Their motto is "Changing the World -one Child at a Time". There are a number of ways to participate. A particular Church or organisation can twin with a Compassion project or individuals can sponsor a known, identified child. Several people could pool their contributions towards one sponsorship. In our Church, there are people of limited means who the Church support with sponsorship funds. This assistance is a "two-way" benefit, another child feels supported and the sponsor sends affection and prayer. The whole congregation feels better.

NOVEMBER 2011

It is Compassion's desire that the partnerships between those who have a little and those who have nothing will be transforming and enduring. The Shoebury Methodist Church in St. Andrews Road, is seeking to sponsor a number of children, each one with a story to tell. Many stories are beyond our comprehension, for instance Jackie Nakabugo lost her father to Aids when she was nine, and she sold charcoal, sitting by the roadside, day in day out. The family as a whole labouring in filthy and unhealthy conditions -charcoal burning is not easy work. A Compassion sponsorship over some years helped her health, welfare, education and personal development so that she can now lift her own family out of poverty. Where a group of people wish to cooperate, they can sponsor a Leadership Development Student. Jackie has completed her training as an Advocate at Law. and supports under privileged people. This sponsorship level costs ÂŁ180 per month for full University education.

We said that sponsorship is a two-way benefit, that immediate benefit to the sponsored child but as they grow into adulthood, there is a dramatic effect in their communities. Firstly, it costs -70p. Per day, Secondly, you are committed to the welfare of a particular child, named, photographed and located. (We are putting "our Child's" photograph with the other grandchildrens' and hope over the years to build up his album). To grow the relationship you write several times a years, imagine the effect of a letter or a greeting card on a child who has never received anything. Each letter is translated until the child has enough English. Tiny gifts such as a book mark and/or our photograph can be included. You are asked to pray for that child and their Community. It matters not if you are of any faith, or none, we can all try to pray, but for sure we can all pay.

The little boy is called Yasin, from Ethiopia, he is our ONE child. Ethiopia has a literacy rate below 40%, life expectancy about 50 years, religions -60% Christian and 32% Muslim. More than a quarter of the people live on less than 63p per day. There is scant access to basic health care, the calamity of 2.2 million aids/HIV sufferers with 1.2 million children orphaned from this scourge Education is scanty. Child labour is the rule and over half of them are less than 14 years old. We cannot help everyone, but we can help someone. Mother Teresa in the slums, was moved to say "If I look at the mass of people I will never act. If I look at the one person, I will". Will you look at just ONE, will you or your club, your work place, your Church or Place of Worship.....WILL YOU ACT? A happy child is a learning child at Thorpe Hall

A

t Thorpe Hall School pupils are taught to understand themselves as much as they understand the world around them. “We all know that a happy child is a learning child,” said Mr Andrew Hampton, Headteacher, “and at Thorpe Hall we extend that into the classroom and teach pupils how to reflect on what motivates them to learn. Pupils explore their reactions to being frustrated or thwarted so that they can learn how to turn failure into success. At the same time they make the vital connection between hard work and satisfaction.” The way children’s work is assessed is also focused on promoting emotional maturity and self-reliance. “Whilst rewarding children for good work is vital in the earlier years of education, it is also important for pupils to understand that hard work is its own reward and leads to long term success.” continued Mr Hampton. “As children progress through the school they are encouraged to see each

classroom activity and piece of homework as a stepping stone to greater knowledge and understanding. We gradually wean pupils off the need to chase grades and focus instead on well-grounded learning. This is undoubtedly the best way to prepare young people for the next stage of their lives. When pupils leave Thorpe Hall they understand that, as well as good GCSEs, they need to have excellent life skills in order to succeed. These skills include being polite and charming, confident and self-assured - and all these things are based on an awareness that emotional intelligence is as important as intellectual intelligence.”

forward thinking Here at Thorpe Hall, we hold traditional values dear but we keep a clear and consistent focus on a brighter future. This is a progressive and forward thinking school for a modern world; a place where new ideas and initiatives are always explored and embraced. Our teaching style is founded on support, guidance and a love of learning and our pupils are actively encouraged to become strong, independent thinkers. Our aim is to bring life to education as well as bringing education to life. Thorpe Hall - for girls and boys from nursery to GCSE

erfume or aftershave makes a perfect seasonal gift and with Christmas fast-approaching, it is no surprise to see increasingly bizarre adverts on TV trying to convince you to buy that particular “frag –rance”.

It used to be so easy, to nip out to Debenhams or Boots in your lunch hour and pick up something by Chanel or Dior. But over the past few years it’s got harder, thanks to the deluge of celebrity scents that now, if you’ll pardon the phrase, flood the shelves. As if being in the papers, on the radio or TV and cinema TV screens is not enough for them, many celebrities are now creating a different kind of chemistry by producing their own perfumes. Marilyn Monroe famously said that she wore nothing more than Chanel No 5 in bed but it was Jennifer Lopez who arguably created a scent-sation when she brought out Glow back in 2000. It didn’t take long for other stars to follow suit. Now it is de rigeur for A-listers like Rihanna and Kim Kardashian to have their own fragrances. Mariah Carey has four scents to her name, whilst Britney Spears has a whopping six. Talk about spritz me baby one more time! X Factor judge,Tulisa Contostavlos has just launched her first perfume, The Female Boss. Packaged in an electric-lilac bottle with street-style graffiti-esque logo, the fragrance is meant to capture her confident, sassy personality with sweet rose, jasmine and peach. And oh…my…days, if you fancy smelling like a proper Essex girl or boy, then there’s a brand new TOWIE fragrance, Dazzle is an ‘intricate

18

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

blend of white florals, jasmine and a touch of amber’ in a gold bottle and Reem is ‘a rich, woody fragrance with citrus undertones and a touch of vanilla.’ Shut up! Frankly, I’m feeling left out but any talk of me launching my own range soon is just non-scents. Seriously though, whatever the marketing suggests, a bottle of Heat will not make your girlfriend as sexy as Beyonce and a few squirts of Mysterious Girl will not give your husband a 6-pack like Peter Andre. And whatever celebrity’s offering you eventually go for, the recipient might not appreciate the comparison you are making! For me, buying a celebrity scent as a genuine gift, no matter how sincerely it is meant, looks a bit naff. I am not alone in saying this, a recent survey for an online perfume retailer found 72% of men found their other halves celebrity perfume anything but a turn on! So when thinking what fragrance to put in his or her stocking this Christmas, step away from the Justin Bieber Someday or Katie Price Stunning and keep it classic. You really do get what you pay for, so be prepared to splash out, rather than splash it all over. For all your hair and beauty issues write to beauty@oraclepublications.co.uk Sponsored by

Money Matters

Add a little certainty to your future

W

e live in economically-challenged times. The threat of a double-dip recession, rising unemployment, and a second global banking crisis have left many people with less money in their pocket to spend.

Most parents will have some level of life cover in place, typically enough to pay off their mortgage should the unthinkable happen, but protecting your family is more than buying a simple life insurance policy. The harsh and sad fact is that we are very likely to be close to someone who gets a serious illness. Taking out a critical illness policy can offer some financial reassurance. These policies promise to pay out a lump sum not when you die but on diagnosis of a specified terminal or other debilitating condition, which typically includes cancer, a stroke, heart attack, kidney failure or multiple sclerosis. It might also be worth reviewing your life cover too. Buying extra life insurance, beyond the amount that covers the mortgage, could provide a legacy for your heirs to fall back on. The more immediate concern for many families will be the possibility of losing a job. It is possible to buy insurance that will pay a proportion of your salary for a fixed period of time, should this happen. The sickness benefits available vary substantially. With an income protection policy you can claim for as long as you are unable to work or until retirement. With a payment protection plan, payments are made for 12 months.

24

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

There are also standalone mortgage protection policies to consider, which will help cover your mortgage repayments while you are ill. It is not just younger people that need to consider all eventualities. If your children have flown the nest and your mortgage is, all but, paid off, that doesn’t mean you should stop thinking about insurance and protecting your family, wealth and health. Inheritance tax is currently paid on an estate worth more than £325,000 or £650,000 if you are married or have a civil partner and where the full allowance is passed to the surviving spouse. A common way to prepare for IHT is to take out a whole-of-life assurance policy in trust, which provides a sum that can be used to pay the IHT bill after you die. Many people think of financial planning as creating wealth. It is, but it is also about protecting what you already have. These are nervous times, which are riddled with uncertainties. With a little bit of thinking - and some expert guidance - you can add some certainty to your financial future. by Jacqui Moyies

“What do points make?” By Stuart Winder ADI

P

RIZES! I hear you cry, but not in the case of penalty points on your driving licence. The risk of losing their licence and the increased cost of insurance associated with points mean 300,000 people in the UK have persuaded another driver to take their points, according to recent AA survey.

Serious Offence In the poll of 16,961 members, 13% of respondents claimed to know someone who had passed points to other drivers, while a further 12% said they would tell the Police if asked to take points for someone else. Clearly, the desire to avoid a ban for accumulating too many points (6 points during your first two years as a qualified driver, 12 points thereafter), or minimise insurance costs leaves some drivers feeling like they have little choice but to pass on the points. However, anyone thinking of doing this should be aware that they are committing a serious offence – attempting to pervert the course of justice – which could leave them facing a large fine or up to 9 months in prison!

by pleading that disqualification would cause them “exceptional hardship”, whilst 13,499 drivers with more than 12 points were banned for a minimum of six months. The worst example was the driver in Bradford who has 32 points on their licence – the highest nationwide – all received for uninsured driving, yet they are still sharing roads with the rest of us. Analysis of the worst drivers (with 25 points or more) shows that 13 have committed uninsured driving offences, while 13 have been given points for speeding or failing to identify the driver of the vehicle. Other offences include driving without due care and attention, mobile phone offences and defective vehicles. With over a 1000 of these ban-dodgers on London and South East roads, perhaps our endorsements should be displayed on our cars and not our licence Stuart Winder Planet Leasing

recipe of the month In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

Bring a pan of salted water to the boil, lower the heat and then simmer the fish for 3-4 minutes, until just turned opaque. Drain and leave to cool. Boil the potatoes until tender, drain and pass through a ricer or mash into a bowl. Flake the salmon into the potato and add all the remaining ingredients. Mix well, allow to cool, cover and chill. Now with wet hands divide the mixture and roll into 30 small balls then flatten each one to form a mini fish cake. In 3 separate bowls place the flour, egg and breadcrumbs mixed with sesame seeds and coat each fish cake with each ingredient in order. Return all the fish cakes to the tray, and refrigerate. (If freezing, open freeze then bag up the next day). When ready to cook heat some oil in a frying pan and shallow fry the fishcakes until crispy and golden on both sides, place on some kitchen paper and keep warm in the oven until ready to serve. Push them onto small individual forks and serve with the warmed dip.

Sesame Salmon Cakes with Spicy Tomato Dip

These are great to make ahead for a party and although a little time consuming well worth the effort. You can of course make large fish cakes to have as a starter or a lunch and they go just as well with some mayonnaise if you don’t want to make the tomato dip. You can also freeze them and then just defrost and cook as many as you need.

Spicy Tomato Dip Saute 1 chopped red chilli, 3 finely sliced shallots and 2 crushed cloves of garlic in a little oil until soft. Add 3 chopped plum tomatoes, 2 tsp tomato puree and cook for 2 mins. Add 300ml/ ½ pt vegetable stock, 1 tsp white wine vinegar, 2 tsp caster sugar, salt and pepper. Simmer for 1015 minutes, blend then pass through a sieve. Taste for seasoning, cool and put into an airtight container and refrigerate until needed (can also be frozen). Heat slowly in a saucepan and pour into dipping bowls to serve with the fishcakes

Spice Up Your Life by Cris Ramis

f all the herbs used to improve health and well-being, ginseng is the most well known and widely used - and for a variety of very good reasons.

Studies done in China also show that ginsenosides increase the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain, helping restore memory, plus enhancing concentration and cognitive abilities.

Used in Oriental medicine for more than 7000 years - as both a prevention and cure for a wide range of ailments - ginseng can reduce the effects of stress, boost energy levels, enhance memory and stimulate the immune system.

Ginseng is commonly used as an adaptogen, meaning it normalises physical functioning depending on what the individual needs (for example, it will lower high blood pressure, but also raise low blood pressure).

Ginseng is native to China, Russia, North Korea, Japan and some areas of North America (it was first cultivated in the United States in the late 1800's).

Men have also used ginseng to improve sexual function and remedy impotence - it is also believed to increase oestrogen levels in women and is often used to treat menopausal symptoms.

It is difficult to grow and takes 4-6 years to become mature enough to harvest. The roots are called Jin-chen, meaning 'like a man,' in reference to their resemblance to the shape of the human body, and can live for over 100 years.

A powerful herb, ginseng can be taken by anyone on a regular basis but my advice would be to avoid mixing it with blood-clotting drugs, if you have had tumours or high blood pressure. Of course, if you have any doubts but would like to try taking a ginseng supplement, always consult your GP first.

Ginseng contains vitamins A, B-6 and the mineral Zinc, all of which aid in the production of thymic hormones, essential for the functioning of the immune system. However the main active ingredients are steroid like ‘ginsenosides’, which are great for preventing the adrenal glands (the ones that react when we come under physical, chemical or biological pressure) working overtime, therefore countering the effects of stress.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 By Tracey Jones

O

n November 18 the latest big screen adaptation of a worldwide literary phenomenon hits our cinemas.

The Twilight series (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn) has sold more than 116 million books worldwide and been translated into 38 different languages. On publication in 2005 it became an instant hit with teenagers, but then just like the Harry Potter series which it is often compared with (for similarly having a plot device revolving around supernatural beings living amongst humans) it soon became loved by adults and children alike. Twilight is by American author Stephenie Meyer and can best be described as a ‘vampire-themed fantasy romance.’ It charts the life Isabella "Bella" Swan, a teenage girl who moves to Forks, Washington, and falls in love with 104-year-old vampire Edward Cullen – but is torn by her feelings for best friend Jacob Black, a werewolf. Meyer, a Mormon, acknowledges that her faith has influenced her work, although she did not consciously intend her novels to promote the virtues of sexual abstinence and spiritual purity, According to the author, her books are "about life, not death" and "love, not lust". Each book in the series was inspired by - and is loosely based on - a different literary classic: Twilight on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, New Moon on-

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Eclipse on Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, and Breaking Dawn on a second Shakespeare play, A Midsummer Night's Dream. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 is the much-anticipated fourth installment of the box office record-breaking saga. Brooding Brit actor Robert Pattison plays Edward, and has become a global superstar thanks to the role – he also spookily starred as Cedric Diggory in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (with a re-appearance in Order of the Phoenix.) Bella is portrayed by Kristen Stewart (now Pattinson’s real-life girlfriend) with Taylor Lautner completing the love triangle as werewolf Jacob. In this latest film, newly-weds Edward and Bella honeymoon in Rio and are soon looking forward to the birth of their first child. But the arrival of their incredible daughter, Renesmee, starts a chain of events that pits them and their allies against the Volturi; the fearsome council of vampire leaders, with the stage being set for an all-out battle. However - spoiler alert! - fans will have to wait for the conclusion. Part 2 is not due for release until November 2012.

Costa del Shoebury! H

ola! The hot summer months may be a distant memory for some but here, as always, we are keeping the sun shining with the launch of: Costa Del Shoebury!

I can already hear you shaking your maracas as you wait to hear more about this exciting initiative. Our successful Modern Foreign Languages Department has been running our Spanish Club for a number of years with great success. But at Shoeburyness High School we never like to stand still, so we have decided to bring Spanish to everyone. Costa Del Shoebury promotes a love of languages across our school and community. We aim to get all members of our school community learning Spanish together through a variety of interactive activities. Many exciting events are taking place throughout the year to celebrate 52

learning a language together with our community. Each department has planned Spanish themed activities which will be integrated into our lessons throughout the school year. This way all our students will get to learn, not just about Spanish language, but also about the culture within Espana. To give you a taster of what our students will experience our Creative and Expressive Arts faculty will study Spanish art, music and dancing, the English faculty will study Spanish literature and Physical Education will learn about the Spanish football league. Our plan is to introduce Spanish into our curriculum in 2012, offering our students both French and Spanish as we believe learning a language is an essential skill for all our young people.

NOVMEBER 2011

Within our brilliantly successful community events, such as the Shoebury Fair in June and our summer Shoeburyness Art trail, you will notice and enjoy a Spanish sparkle, making them even more enjoyable for our local community. The excellent Modern Foreign Languages department have also developed the original Spanish club so that more people can enjoy learning Spanish together. Hola todo el mundo! and Viva Espana! run during lunch break and after school and are open to students and staff enabling them to learn together. We warmly invite residents of our local community to join in with our celebration of all things Spanish. If you would like to take up the opportunity to learn spoken Spanish in a relaxed environment please email Mme Bontemps, the Head of MFL, for more details on emiliebontemps@shoeburyness.southend.sch.uk

We do hope you will join with us in our Spanish Adventure and below are a few new words and phrases for you to learn with us: Hello = Hola Goodbye = Adios Please = Por Favor Thank you = Gracias Yes = Si No = No How are you? = Como Estas? I am fine thank you = Múy bien, gracias Katrina Lambert Assistant Headteacher STOP PRESS! HIGH 5 - Shoeburyness High School has launched its High Five Club with Year 5’s.
