Coastal Warnings! L

ast month’s article about our local ecology and coastline raised a lot of interest and so I thought I would update you on the situation. Large groups of people are continuing to strip oysters from the foreshore and Council officers have now reported this to the Gang Masters Licensing Agency. The matter has also been referred to the Councils Economic and Environmental scrutiny committee. I would like to thank Peter Wexham Lib-Dem Councillor (Leigh) for his assistance with this month’s article. Like me, Peter is in no doubt the foreshore between Leigh and Shoebury is under threat of erosion. We believe the mud flats and surrounding marshes are now going through their biggest change since the Dutch reclaimed Canvey Island, which started the gradual silting up of the area.

Mudflat effected after 300 years

only be because the water is moving faster and picking up the fine particles and taking them away, therefore lowering the mudflats in some areas by two feet. This is plain to see with the large stony areas that are now showing and the amount of small rills and guts that have been uncovered. The only significant change in recent years has been the dredging of a deep water channel in the Estuary. There is a consensus of opinion that the channel has caused an increase in the speed of water coupled with a swirling effect that is dragging these fine particles away from the mud plains. Southend-on-Sea Council and the Environment Agency are concerned and surveyors will now monitor the whole foreshore. Natural England is addressing the problem of loss of flora and fauna as they are responsible, along with the Council, for the protection of our mudflats.

When the flow of water slows it deposits particles of sand and mud that are held in suspension in the sea. The mudflats become sustainable with the amount of sediment pick up similar to that being deposited and this has been the situation for the past 300 years.

This now leads us to the town’s flood defences which have now also become an emotive issue. Since 1946 the Council has been responsible for maintenance and improvements to the town’s flood defences. Flood defences were introduced at Shoebury Common in 1961/62 in response to the flooding of 1953 but this section now has the Things have now changed; silt is not being lowest level of sea defences in the borough and deposited on the foreshore at previous levels, but improvements are needed to provide the same the amount disappearing has increased. level of protection as Eastern Esplanade. This could be done by increasing the height of the wall by approximately 1m, to a maximum wall height of 1.8m (6ft) at the coast guard station. A draft shoreline strategy identified the need for sea defence improvements at the Shoebury Common area within the next 5 years and this has been given full approval by all of Southend-onSea Councillors. However, until ratified by the Environment Agency it remains just that, a draft strategy.

Objections will be considered It should be remembered that any detailed proposals for sea defence schemes would need to be agreed by the council’s Development Control Committee and objections would be considered before any decision on a formal application is taken. What flood defences are needed at Shoebury Common? Eastern Esplanade starts with a 6ft high wall to protect residents’ homes from flooding. Therefore an indicative project to raise the sea wall was included in the shoreline strategy and work was tentatively programmed for 2014. Before finalizing these plans Council officers felt that raising the sea wall would have a serious detrimental impact on the beach hut owners and a different approach should be sought. However, planning law does not include a right to a view

and if the Council is so minded a higher sea-wall could be built. Council officers felt that a more sensitive construction could be an earth embankment which would be set back from the promenade on open grassed common land. This idea was mooted for consultation and has now become an emotive issue.

Homes must be protected The crux of the matter is this; the Council has a duty to protect homes and businesses from flooding. Civic responsibility to the residents requires that this is done in the most cost effective way and, where possible, to avoid having a serious detrimental effect on the amenity of an area. The Beach Hut Association recently held a meeting on this issue and I was disappointed by the aggressive stance taken by some attendees. If there is to be a satisfactory outcome at Shoebury Common then the Association needs to be more constructive. With a more positive approach and further input from the Council I hope that a satisfactory solution will be found for all parties. Ron Woodley Chair, Burges Estate Residents Association

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

naturally curly hair some control, textures thick hair and adds body to flat or thin hair. The shaggy bob is ideal for today’s woman. A well cut bob doesn’t take a lot of time to style in the morning and is very versatile, for all the situations a busy life throws at you. In a social setting, it can appear fun and relaxed and, when teamed with a glamorous outfit, sassy and chic. Subtle grooming will give you a cool, unkempt and yet gamine appeal.

Visual Impact

Shaggy Bob Story W

hen Keira Knightly stepped onto the Anna Karenina red carpet in New York with a shaggy bob, she was just the latest in a series of fashion-forward women – including Nicole Kidman, Alexa Chung and Kim Basinger – to rock the tousled look.

A shaggy bob haircut combines multiple layers to create a tossed, fresh look. Opt for a length that sits between your chin and shoulders and has several layers around the crown of your hair. These layers can be styled to stand out from the main body of your hair, giving the overall style more depth and visual impact. Many versions of the shaggy bob also feature bangs that sweep to one side of the face. If you are blessed with thick hair then you don’t even have to blow dry after washing, making the shaggy bob an economical hairstyle because less styling product is used compared to longer styles. In turn, this can lead to healthier hair although more frequent trims may be required to maintain the shape and prevent split ends from forming.

Supermodel Arizona Muse kicked off the year by chopping off her locks and revealing a short, chic and layered take on a classic style. Bob hairstyles first captured the female public’s imagination in the 1920s, with Louise Brooks becoming the leading icon of this look.Throughout the decades since, the bob has stayed the course with some modifications along the way. Vidal Sassoon’s dramatic, angular cut caused a media storm in the 1960s but the neat, groomed style preferred by Modettes eventually gave way to the softer, freer and looser style sported by Bianca Jagger. Kim Basinger gave it a sexy twist, when she was filmed with a permanent just-got-out-of-bed appearance in the bonk-tastic 9½ Weeks movie. Another pin-up of the 80’s,Debbie Harry, gave the bob a bohemian edge with her peroxided and scruffily ruffled style.

If you want to stand out from the ultra-preened crowd, the shaggy bob really is a grown-up, comfortable cut that will give you a very feminine, on-trend look.Work it, ladies!

A shorter bob accentuates the jaw line to make an oval face appear more exotic.A heart-shaped face is framed ideally with a medium bob, whilst a rounder face is elongated by a long, layered bob. Layering give

Money Matters

recently the financial crisis of 2008, and near collapse of the global banking system, saw the index return its worse ever calendar year performance, losing almost one-third over the 12 month period (source: Financial Express Analytics). Form Good Habits The whole point of investment is to put money aside to meet medium to long term objectives such as providing security, an income for retirement or money to leave to the children. History shows that a simple investment strategy involving the good habit of regular saving for the longer term is one which rarely fails.

The importance of a long term investment strategy

I

t is over 30 years since Margaret Thatcher came to power as Prime Minister, and one of the lasting legacies of her premiership was to popularise the culture of share ownership among the British people. Thatcher launched a privatisation policy involving the public utilities, with British Telecom the first to be floated in 1984. Its sale did more than anything else to lay the basis for a share-owning popular capitalism in Britain. In the same year as the BT floatation, the FTSE 100 Index - the most widely used UK stock market indicator - was launched, and a look at the Index’s highs and lows over the following three decades emphasises the importance of taking a long term view when it comes to successful investing in equity markets. Whilst the index hasn’t traded below its initial level of 1,000 since 1984, the impact of major global events has, unsurprisingly, heralded significant falls. The 9/11 tragedy led to the index falling nearly 6% in one day and more

Only two prices should ever matter to the investor – the price you buy at, and the price you sell at. What happens in between really doesn’t matter, and as difficult and unsettling as it can be at times of market volatility, investors should always try to hold on to that one basic guiding principle. Regular saving as part of a long term investment strategy offers a flexible, affordable solution for many people. Additionally, investors should look at a diversification strategy, so that they don’t have all their eggs in one basket. Whatever investment route you choose, be it a lump sum investment or regular contributions, the key is to seek specialist advice from a wealth expert and make sure you get the money into funds that will be managed for your benefit over the longer term. And then forget about them. If you follow these simple rules you are in a strong position to build up a substantial portfolio of investments in the long run.

Place it in a large bowl with the breadcrumbs, flour, two-thirds of the chilli, spring onion, the zest of 1 lime and the juice of ½, 3 tsp of the soy sauce, the fish sauce, lemongrass paste and coriander. Add enough egg to bring it all together. Shape into 4 burgers, put on a lined plate and cover with cling film. Chill for 20 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, make the cucumber relish. Mix the remaining soy, sugar, juice of the remaining ½ lime and remaining chilli, pour over the cucumber and combine. Set aside.

Thai Chicken Burgers with Spicy Cucumber Relish

T

his makes a change from a normal type burger and is much lower in fat. A really simple mid- week supper or snack, especially if you have hungry teenagers around. It is really nice to serve them in some warm pitta bread if you don’t want to make any wedges. The uncooked patties also freeze as long as they are wrapped well and put in a freezer bag.

3. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and brown the burgers for 2-3 minutes on each side. Transfer to a lined baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes or until cooked through.

4. Serve with the cucumber relish, roasted sweet potato wedges and extra lime wedges. Next month’s recipe:

This 1.28 carat diamond was destined for house clearance in E.Sussex but sold here for £3,000

Under The Hammer

Value your contents I

t is said that one of life’s most stressful things is moving house. From years of experience moving my own home and dealing with other people sorting out the homes of deceased relatives I would say that the latter is much more traumatic. Not only are people dealing with the grief issue but they are then faced with sorting out endless paperwork, wills, inheritance tax, house contents, property value and so on, not to mention the relatives who come out of the woodwork hoping for a slice! Little wonder then that so many people make big mistakes with the home contents and begin the sorting out process without taking professional advice. It’s hard enough for those of us who are in the business full time to keep up with price trends but for the layman it’s impossible. Result? People make judgements based on their own taste or perception of value and very frequently dispose of the more valuable items before calling someone like myself in for advice.

There are also some who just think they know better and frankly they are the ones who keep the bootsale vultures happy. We deal with deceased estates on a very regular basis as well as the less traumatic “downsizers” moving into retirement flats or rest homes and it is really sad to see how many people make very big mistakes which cost them dearly. Sometimes they become aware of it later but usually not. Local solicitors frequently call us to help their clients deal with the issue of Probate as well as the disposal of effects, as do many people from much further afield. General house clearance is something which should only take place AFTER professional advice has rooted out the valuables and they have gone to auction. I have seen so many cases over the last 20 years in the area of derisory offers being made for complete house contents when auction has resulted in a cheque for thousands of pounds going to the family. These days who can afford to make such mistakes. By Trevor Cornforth
