Sea wall objections overruled D

oing nothing is not an option - is what the Conservative Councillors say to confuse you into thinking that this is the only option, then tell you this is what you will have, whether you like it or not. With over 2200 planning objections & only 4 in favour, provides evidence to support you do not want this sea wall. We believe if we provide the facts, you are more than capable of making your own informed choices, but the Council just inflates the cost of other alternatives, so they are rejected. Did you know, once they spend the £5.2m on the new sea wall, they still have to repair the existing and maintain the new wall over its 30 / 50 year life span. Why not spend this money on the existing sea wall? The Councils produced life costs, which proved the Councils alternative option two was £2.2m cheaper, but this information was never given to the Place Scrutiny committee. It must be cheaper to look after one defence – not two?

John Prescott blamed The day after the preferred option was approved, Garrison Developers applied for planning permission to build 172 (2/3-storey) houses & 15 (3/4-storey) office blocks, in the middle of the Flood Plain. You may remember they offered £2.5m towards the sea wall & local schools. This has now been reduced to £970,000 leaving £1.5m funded from the public purse. Half the houses previously built on their flood map were built within the last 20 years, so this new development will add yet another 200 to the statistics. Southend Council blamed John Prescott for allowing developments on flood plains, but will not change it back? Association of British Insurers confirmed that houses built on flood plains after 01/01/2009 will NOT be covered under the new FloodRe agreement, so how can they approve this application? The CP8 Core

Strategy Policy insists on 30% being affordable homes, but none are shown. 850 cars a day are expected to use this site – How do you think this will affect the infrastructure, drains, water table etc? This is not a political challenge, but when 51 Southend councillors are ruled by 8 Conservative cabinet members, it is time to do something – Doing nothing is not an option. We have had tremendous support from all the Independent Councillors in the borough, but they have limited voting power. Having been a Conservative voter all my life, it is a sad day that the only way to obtain Councillor support, is to vote for a local Councillor that listen to your concerns, not just at election time. By the time you read this, local elections will be over, but your vote will give them the mandate to proceed or reject the Shoebury Common preferred option. In preparation, we have instructed a Marine Consulting Engineer to design an alternative flood defence scheme, using the soil, but this will not effect our Common. We are excited by the preliminary details received. The wave engineer is just finishing the final touches, after which we hope to submit for Planning Permission. More news to follow. By Peter Lovett

hy do so many men make such a meal of their holiday wardrobe? Here's my jetsetter's guide to getting your man looking cool this summer.

Decent shades can soften a multitude of sartorial sins. I’d also advise you to buy your sunnies at home, before the combination of heat, booze and “holiday brain” start to rule his mental roost.

Avoid going native What’s more, when you buy clothes at home, you tend to think in terms of what looks good at home and abroad. If he decides to go native and sport what is all the rage with the locals, this can look incredibly daft when strolling down the High Street. Finally, it goes without saying that what he sticks on his feet can make or break not just the holiday but also your relationship. In the right context, flip flops are fine and sandals, such as Birkenstocks, add an air of relaxedness but under no circumstances should they be worn with socks. by Craig Smith

1 tbsp mustard powder 4 tbsp softened butter 6 tbsp fresh breadcrumbs 6 tbsp finely chopped watercress 6 tbsp finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 tbsp green peppercorns in brine, drained and chopped

Method:

Preheat the oven to 200/fan 180/gas 6

1. With a sharp knife remove all but a thin layer of fat from the meaty side of the racks and then score diagonally in both directions to make a close lattice pattern( this will help hold the crust in place). 2. Season generously with salt and pepper and a

hint of cayenne pepper. Roast the racks for 10-15 minutes, remove from the oven then leave at room temperature to cool.

You can sear the lamb and put the herb crust on well in advance and then 25 minutes before you need them pop them in the oven. They really are easy to do and worth the effort.

In July 2008, Norway met the top nations of European cricket where they participated in the Division One of the European Championship but only finished sixth. In August 2009, Norway travelled to Singapore to compete in Division Six of the WCL. Norway only won one of five group matches and finished sixth overall. As a result, Norway was relegated to Division Seven.

International Cricket comes to Southchurch

n the 21st June at 2pm, Old Southendian & Southchurch Cricket Club will be hosting the Norway national team, in a T20 warm up game for the ICC Division 2 European Championship tournament, being played throughout Essex during the following couple of weeks. The Norwegian cricket team is the national cricket team of Norway. In a country of 5.0 million, Norwegian Cricket has about 5000 members. Cricket was first organised in the 1960s by a few Asian immigrants and has grown to the current state of 24 clubs playing in three divisions.

ECC Trophy won Norway became a member of the International Cricket Council in 2000, and played their first international tournament that year. They won the tournament without losing a game, but did not play again until 2003 when they took part in the ECC Trophy for the first time and won the tournament. This qualified them for Division Two of the European Championship in 2004. In 2005 they won the European Affiliates Championship, the equivalent of the ECC Trophy. They once again won the tournament and qualified for Division Two of the European Championship in

In May 2011, Norway travelled to Botswana for Division Seven of the World Cricket League and their relatively poor performances at ICC events continued as they finished fifth overall. Fifth place saw Norway relegated to Division Eight of the WCL.

Fresh Blood However, by the end of year 2011 a drastic change in team performance was observed, due to inclusion of some fresh blood. Under the captaincy of Zeeshan the team went on to win several qualifying rounds and titles. This success got the team a spot in another ICC qualifier event and in 2013 they competed in the 2013 ICC European T20 Championship Division One in England where they finished in 8th place, securing wins over Sweden and Gibraltar. Old Southendian & Southchurch Cricket Club are delighted to be hosting Norway and wish them every bit of luck in the tournament.
