The team at Pace

Advertorial

Setting the Pace! : Celebrating 20 years

I

t’s 20 years this August since Pace Plc began trading as a private property management company in Southend. Looking back on the last two decades, the company has grown from a small family business to the wellknown and respected property company it is today. The team at Pace has worked hard to build a reputation for excellent customer service and an honest approach. Over the years, many local lettings and estate agencies have come and gone but Pace continues to go from strength to strength.

1994 – Property and Commercial Enterprises (Pace) Plc is founded as a property management company to manage a private portfolio of local flats and houses. 1998 – Pace now owns 100 residential

properties in Southend.

2001 – The company acquires the lettings business of a local agent and begins to let properties for third parties. The company is in a unique position since it now owns a portfolio of 120 properties. Being a landlord itself, the company truly understands the challenges its clients experience. As such, the company takes a proactive role in working directly with local stakeholders and decision makers to ensure the best interests of landlords and tenants. 2002 – The company moves to a larger workplace in Westcliff on the London Road. 6

2005 – Pace establishes an Estate Agency department with the aim to offer the same exceptional service experienced by clients of the PACE Lettings agency for those wishing to sell property. 2005 – Pace relocates to the current larger, modern offices on Southchurch Road.

2007 – Crystal Horwood is asked to rejoin the family firm as Business Development Director, returns to the UK and becomes a member of the NAEA. Crystal endeavours to improve customer service and grow the business. All senior staff are now encouraged to pass the technical training award and become members of the NAEA and ARLA. 2008 - Marcus James begins working for Pace as a lettings negotiator and Kelly Jenkins, is employed as an Accounts Assistant. Local Issues

It’s good to give T

he majority of us get a great deal of pleasure from giving, whether that’s to our loved ones or giving something back to our local community. And an increasing number of business owners recognise that not only do they have a responsibility to support the community in which they are based, but there are tangible benefits to be gained from doing so.

One of the most important ways a company can engage with their local community is by supporting its young people: becoming a mentor, offering work experience and / or employing apprentices can make such a difference to today’s youth.

One of the biggest benefits is increased reputation. Well actually, that might be second to how good business owners feel when they are able to “give something back!” Staff will also feel motivated, engaged and proud to work for the company. And for many companies, being able to demonstrate appropriate levels of community support and engagement could even help them win contracts; social and environmental criteria is increasingly being driven down both the public and private sector supply chain.

Businesses are an integral part of the community where they are based, particularly if it is also the same community in which the business owners and many of their staff live. Southend needs thriving, profitable businesses if the borough is to continue to flourish. But equally, if a community is under stress from societal issues, it will negatively impact upon local businesses either directly or indirectly.

Businesses should be creative - community support isn’t just about issuing a cheque! Some companies may be able to offer specific skills on a pro-bono basis; or perhaps have surplus IT equipment or office furniture that a local charity, community group or even school could benefit from. Many companies offer their staff paid volunteering time; or employees might work together on fund raising projects such as a fun run. SEPTEMBER 2014

Stronger together

Businesses and the communities in which they operate are definitely stronger if they work together. A new business award To encourage businesses to support their local community, a Southend Business and Community Charter has been launched which includes a rolling awards system to acknowledge and celebrate businesses that demonstrate appropriate levels of engagement.

www.oraclepublications.co.uk

ORACLE-ON-SEA

9

The project is designed to increase community engagement, ensure it is meaningful, and profile businesses that are making a difference. To ensure that any size business can apply from a tiny business upwards, the award works to the ASTI system: Appropriate to the Size, Type and Impact of the business. The first award winner was Moredge Canine Hydrotherapy Centre consisting of a sole proprietor and one employee. Jacqui Fry, proprietor of Moredge, impressed the Charter Committee with her commitment to supporting young people. Her one employee is a former apprentice and she offers work experience to students on an ongoing basis who invariably thrive under Jacqui’s watchful eye. The award is available at bronze, silver and gold, and we want to see an increasing number of businesses proudly displaying the award logo.

Who operates the award? The Southend Business and Community Charter is administered by the Organisation for Responsible Businesses (ORB) and supported by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, Essex Chambers of Commerce, Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), Southend Association of Voluntary Services (SAVS), Southend BID, Southend Business Partnership, Southend Adult

Is it easy to apply? The application process itself is easy and companies can apply at any time. But this is a robust two-stage award and businesses will need to allocate time to completing it and ensuring they meet the criteria. As Jill Poet, Managing Director of ORB explained: “We wanted an award to celebrate businesses of all types and sizes that are doing their bit to support the local community. But equally, we also want to help ensure that Southend businesses are robust, efficient and compliant, so that is why we have developed this two stage approach. It does mean a bit of effort is involved, but it also ensures the award has a great deal of credibility. “All the information about the award is on the web site www.bccawards.org.uk/Southend, but I’m more than happy for anyone to give me a call on 01702 468387 and we’ll arrange for me to visit and explain how the process works.”

Community College and Groundworks Essex. All these organisations form the Charter Committee, and it is that committee which decides if an award is given and at what level – bronze, silver or gold.

Oracle Hair & Beauty

Right hair, right now? I

t sounds like the beginning of a joke but isn’t. A middle-aged man walks into a hair salon, asking for a cut similar to a leading sportsman’s. He gets it and is delighted. His wife, however, hates it and says it makes him look twenty years younger. So what’s the problem?

Adjust your hair style

two options; going for shorter or much longer hair. As the song says, anything goes. However, be careful because the wrong short haircut can have an ageing effect, but by going shorter on the sides and at the back, but heavier on top, will give you the volume you need to help balance out your features.

Look Younger

Of course, had the shoe been on the other foot, there wouldn’t have been an ‘issue’ - but then, just as you should change your wardrobe, skincare, and cosmetics as you age, you also should adjust your hairstyle. Here are my top tips for fabulous age-appropriate hair no matter how many candles are on your cake, baby!

Confident & settled

In your twenties, you can be far more experimental and change your cut and colour almost to suit your mood and outfit but as you enter your thirties, the more confident and settled you begins to emerge and that’s the time to still be creative, but a little less wild. If you’re thirty-something, why not try a sexy, shoulder-length bob with slight layers and a wavy, tousled texture. The short length and angles make it sophisticated, but the bed-head texture keeps it sexy and cool. Think Cameron Diaz.

My advice for ladies in their fifties is simply this: shoulder-length and angled. Wearing your hair shoulder-length can actually make you look younger. Layered and slightly angled cuts help to soften your features. Michelle Pfeiffer is in her mid-fifties, has this cut and looks H.O.T. That said, a short hairstyle can look very chic on a fifty-something woman. Make sure it’s not too severe by keeping more length on the sides and top of the head. This diverts attention away from life’s little imperfections and draws attention up to your eyes - Dames Judy Dench and Helen Mirren are style mavens for this look. by Craig Smith

As they hit their forties, a lot of my clients consider

Council News

Keeping you informed T

his month’s main issue is the new Waste Collection and Cleansing Contract and in particular the Council's long standing contractual relationship with Cory. The procurement for the contract was agreed in March 2014 (before my time). Prior to this a cross member working Party were briefed in September 2013 of the procurement process with suggested areas of improvement and value for money opportunities. Companies interested in the new contract were invited to what are called ‘supplier engagement interviews’ from that process it was apparent that tendering for the new contract would be extremely competitive. Unfortunately Cory was not successful as a preferred bidder. I am aware that most of the Cory staff live locally and the Council will ensure that the transfer of all existing staff that are eligible under TUPE is undertaken with any new contractor to try and avoid job losses.

The Royal Hotel It appeared earlier this summer that there could be an opportunity to purchase the Royal Hotel. Having looked deeper into the issue, there is only a small part of the property available on a leasehold basis (my feelings are well known about leaseholds and landlords). I have therefore instructed officers not to proceed.

Some good news Officers have managed to secure £40m ‘Better Start’ lottery funding with the Pre School Learning alliance. What happens in the first three

recipe of the month

Ingredients 300g caster sugar plus 3 tbsp extra 5 large egg whites ( about 150g in weight) 50g dessicated coconut 50g natural pistachios, chopped 500g strawberries, hulled and halved if large 500g raspberries Juice of ½ lemon 300ml double cream 100ml Greek yoghurt

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

1. Preheat the oven to 200c/fan 180/gas 6. Tip the 300g sugar into a small roasting tin and place in the oven for 7 minutes. Remove and turn the oven down to 110c/fan 90/gas ¼ 2. Whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt in an electric mixer until frothy. Tip all the hot sugar onto the egg whites and put on high speed for 10 minutes until the mixture is stiff and glossy. 3. Using a large metal spoon, fold in the coconut

and half of the pistachios. Line two baking sheets with baking parchment and then spoon the meringue into 8-10 portions. Cook for 1hour 45mins, remove and allow to cool (The meringues will keep in an airtight tin for up to a week).

Pistachio & Coconut Meringues

I

don’t think there is a more popular dessert than meringues with cream and berries. This is a slightly different method as the sugar is heated first so that the meringue is slightly cooked to begin with. It is very easy to do and the meringues can be made up to a week ahead.

4. One hour before serving place all the berries, lemon juice and extra sugar in a bowl and mix lightly. This will macerate the fruit so that the juices start to run. Whisk the cream and yoghurt until it is a soft whip and then top each meringue with a spoonful of the cream and top with berries and finally the remaining chopped pistachios. Next month’s recipe: Vegetarian Pasties

Mobile Website Solutions

The macerated fruit is lovely as the sugar and lemon really bring the flavours out, so worth doing even if just serving with cream or ice cream. This is a perfect summer dessert. Enjoy! Pistachio & Coconut Meringues with Red Berries

Oracle Security

Security : Glass & Film

I

f you value your safety, it’s really key to know your security ‘ABC’, in fact it’s the basis of your security which once monitored will help you feel safer, more secure, protected and self-assured. If you’re like most people you’ll be thinking that ‘local crime’ is just ‘statistical fubar’ and won’t happen to you. It’s a sad fact then to know that unfortunately statistics aren’t on your side... You’d think that armed with this knowledge would give us a kick up the backside to get something done about it but for whatever reason we simply don’t. Traditionally ‘us Brits’ consider security as a ‘grudge buy’ tending to leave it until something does happen, don’t let us say we told you so; nobody likes a know it all!

Security Checklist If however you feel like you’ve done all you can to secure your property and belongings, you might want to double check and run through our ‘ABC Checklist’ to really, REALLY make sure that you’re ‘on the ball’. We’ve numbered them according to their importance as under:

A}

1. Locks (Previous issue) 2. Safe/Security Boxes (Previous issue)

B}

3. Alarms (Previous issue) 4. CCTV (Previous issue)

C}

5. Laminated Glass/Bandit Film - This issue 6. Grilles, Bars & or Roller Shutters

30

ORACLE-ON-SEA

Laminated glass is harder to break and will slow down an intruder

So if you’ve been listening and you’ve upped your security you should have kept the burglars at bay for at least a while.

So what’s next? Laminated glass that’s what’s next! Yes, laminated glass might seem a bit of ‘overkill’ but it all depends on the level of security that you’re after. It’ll certainly stop a quick smash and grab as laminated glass is harder to break. Alternatively, using various grades of protective film can make your glass anti bandit, anti-blast and even bullet resistant so you should be okay even if you get caught in the middle of a bandit gun fight, Awesome!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Oracle Gardening

What can you do if your garden is waterlogged? Try not to walk on the soil as this can make the situation worse. The compacted soil will affect the drainage. This can lead to garden fungal diseases and phytopthora (a type of water mould, known as ‘The Plant Destroyer’) growing. Dig up plants damaged by waterlogging and replant them in free draining compost. If you have non-clay soil, encourage drainage by pricking the surface of your lawn with a garden fork and filling holes with horticultural sand. If you have a clay garden, a drainage system will need to be installed.

How to clear a waterlogged garden

T

he recent rain has caused waterlogging in gardens across Essex. Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to help your garden make a full recovery and prevent waterlogging from reoccurring.

What is a waterlogged garden? The term ‘waterlogged garden’, simply means a garden that has been overcome by heavy rain. There may be puddles resting on the top of the soil, and plants will look like they need water, with yellowing leaves and black soggy roots. Other obvious signs include lots of mud and squelching underfoot.

What conditions encourage waterlogging? Some gardens are more prone to waterlogging than others. Conditions that encourage waterlogging include: n Homes built on clay (common in South East Essex), as water cannot drain away as easily. n Poorly planted lawn and turf. n Homes situated at the bottom of a hill.

32

ORACLE-ON-SEA

Drainage solutions An effective drainage solution is a soakaway. This simple system takes water away from your garden to be pumped out. Another solution is building a trench or ditch, lined with hardcore. If the area you live in is prone to flooding, consider growing plants that do well in wet conditions. Salix, Conrnus and Betula thrive in moist areas. Why not cultivate a bog garden? This is great for attracting wildlife and makes an unusual garden feature. Whatever you decide to do, don’t leave waterlogging to chance. Long term effects can lead to permanently damaged lawns and shrubs, leaving you frustrated and your garden looking sad.
