The feedback from last year’s event was outstanding including the following comments; Alun Finnigan - “The event’s organisers and supporters made this event enjoyable and their enthusiasm to make the event a success was evident! If you want a challenge whilst helping a great cause (with no pressure) and to run a beautiful course then I'll see you next year.”

24 hour Run

Clair Evans - “What an amazing event - never done anything like it before and it was brilliant. Lovely route, experienced organisers, great atmosphere. Can't wait till next year!”

T

he second staging of the HARP 24 will take place at Westcliff Rugby Club and Cherry Orchard Country Park on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd June. The event is open to competitors of all abilities and involves running 4.2 mile circuits through picturesque countryside. As well as giving participants the opportunity to get in shape for the summer, the event will raise much needed funds for the homeless of Southend. The first staging of the event last year raised the magnificent sum of £4,500 for HARP and the organisers are hoping to double that figure this year. The event is aimed at teams of from 2 to 8 people but individuals are also welcome. The idea is to have a team member on the course throughout the 24 hours of the event which starts at noon on 22nd and finishes at noon on 23rd June. However, this is not obligatory and if teams wish to take a break, this is OK. Last year one team ran one circuit each, then partied, stayed the night and left the next morning! The emphasis is on having fun while you run and completing the challenges of being involved for 24 hours and running in the dark on the shortest weekend night of the year.

Kasia Kostyrka-Allchorne - “What a cracking race! Excellent organisation and fantastic support from the organisers, nice goody bag and t-shirt, medal and a trophy for all finishers, beautiful course and a great adventure.” So if you are a member of a sports team or club or some other organisation such as a business or community organisation and want to participate in a sporting challenge then visit the website at http://www.harpsouthend.co.uk/HARP24.htm

Leaves of Life : A dedication in memory of your loved one

T

he death of a family member or close friend is an emotional time but our bespoke crafted tree, set in the peace and tranquility of Southend Crematorium, can keep a memory of those loved ones as a dedication. Leaves of Life is a new public memorial at Southend crematorium, Sutton Road, Southend. A memorial to loved ones, a place you can visit to feel near to someone cherished that can help provide comfort. Dedicate an engraved leaf which will adorn our tree – you can choose a large gold coloured leaf or a smaller bronze coloured leaf. The price of your engraved leaf can include the name of your loved one with date of birth and death however a joint leaf can be dedicated with names only.

You can visit the memorial tree any time the crematorium is open as it is situated between the Chapel and Gardens of Remembrance in a serene setting for you to reflect and remember. ‘It is important for families to have dedicated space within the Crematorium grounds to remember someone by and Leaves of Life provides further choice in another area within the Garden of Remembrance for the Community to do this’ A dedicated engraved leaf may be purchased from £50 and will be displayed on the tree for 12 months with a renewable reduced fee for subsequent year. For more information please phone Leaves of Life on 01702 221665 or on their website www.leavesoflife.co.uk

Welcome to my new service

My service various topics such as: •

From personal experience, I know how difficult it can be to decide what to do when a loved one is taken ill or diagnosed with chronic disease.

• • •

Due to the nature of disease, families become very sensitive and protective of their loved ones. Apart from the initial denial and panic that people experience when they see, sense or feel that something is wrong with their loved one, together with the lack of education available, is it really a surprise that individuals don’t really know where to turn especially those old age problems, with rising care costs.

Considerations of what you may have to prepare for when older family members need help and how it may affect you and or your business. Considerations for asset protection. Health- Social Care – It’s impact. Who Pays? Understanding the various powers of attorneys, which one is right for you? The importance of making a will. very year the fashion industry tries to recycle an old look and push it as this season’s ‘must have’. For years and some reason known only to itself, fashion was convinced we should all be rocking the cowboy look and repeatedly flooded the High Street with plaid, denim and faux Stetsons. But, as the folk singer Mike Harding sagely put it, it’s hard being a cowboy in Rochdale, the spurs don’t fit right on your clogs and people laugh when I ride past, on our Alsatian dog. For me, there is one wardrobe staple that never goes out of style and works with any outfit – the simple, crisp white shirt. Whether on a man or a woman, nothing beats the white shirt. The key is its versatility. Ditching a t-shirt for a collar conveys a more sophisticated appearance and leaving a couple of buttons undone looks dressed-down and effortlessly cool. Frills and bows on a blouse add femininity and a touch of fun. This also makes a blouse a little more ‘dressy’, which means that it can be worn as a statement garment in the office or for a night out.

against which you can show off a ‘look at me’ accessory, be it an eye-catching necklace, over-sized watch, bracelet or bold-print silk scarf. Alternatively, keeping things plain and simple allows you to show off a bold new hair cut or make-up without any distractions. What’s more, it is the perfect way to let your personality shine through. Teaming a shirt with skinny trousers and high heels creates a clever mix of professional, assertive and sassy. The versatility of the white shirt or blouse is never more perfectly demonstrated, than when you pull on a pair of blue jeans, or wear it with a suit or belted skirt. Of course, there is one absolute rule, it must fit. If a shirt fits well then it becomes whatever you want it to be and depending on your mood and the situation, you’re wearing one of fashion’s timeless icons. Sponsored by

Money Matters

Your ISA allowance – a wasted opportunity? I

n the current environment of low interest rates, low economic growth and modest but persistent inflation, savers and investors need to make the most of every opportunity to maximise the returns on their money. Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) represent just such an opportunity; yet many people are wasting the valuable tax-saving advantages and investment potential provided by their annual ISA allowance.

There are two types of ISA: Cash ISAs are savings accounts where the interest is paid tax-free and Stocks & Shares ISAs, as the name suggests, allow investment into a wider range of stock market and other financial instruments. The attraction of a Stocks & Shares ISA is that both income and capital gains attract no further tax liability. However, there are restrictions on how much can be invested in each type. Figures from the Bank of England in December showed that the average Cash ISA deposit rate is just 0.65%. That a huge chunk of ÂŁ200 billion in savings is failing to beat inflation is a stark illustration of how this rare tax-saving opportunity is being wasted (source: HMRC September 2012). The reality is that the tax benefits provided by ISAs are best maximised by investing for the long term in assets capable of achieving capital growth and rising income. The likelihood is that interest rates will remain very low for a number of years to come and, regrettably, savers cannot even be sure that their Cash ISA account is achieving a better rate than a standard deposit account. Against that

24

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

backdrop, whilst cash is certainly the right home for money that might be needed in the short term, ISA allowances might be better utilised by investing in a diversified portfolio of assets that have the scope to deliver higher levels of income and long-term capital gains and, in doing so, make the most of the tax freedom on returns. Of course, investors need to bear in mind that the value of a Stocks & Shares ISA may fall as well as rise and it does not provide the security of capital associated with a Cash ISA.

As well as considering the best use of this and future years’ ISA allowances, those who have already built up significant ISA funds might be able to improve the income and capital returns on offer. A thorough review of an ISA portfolio by an experienced wealth manager can ensure that it is appropriately structured and diversified to help achieve immediate or future financial goals. ISAs should be a cornerstone of financial planning, but it is also important to consider them in the context of an overall investment strategy and to ensure that an ISA portfolio can be adjusted easily to cater for changing needs.

recipe of the month

Ingredients cont...

cut into 3cm pieces 2tbsp extra virgin olive oil Grated zest and juice of half a lime 2 tbsp drained capers chopped 1 small garlic clove, crushed 1 tbsp finely chopped flat leaf parsley 1 tbsp finely chopped tarragon

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

1. Cook the potatoes in a pan of boiling salted water until tender. Drain and return to the pan to keep warm. 2. Heat a griddle pan over a medium high heat, spray the salmon fillets with oil and season with salt and black pepper. Cook skin side down for 3-4 minutes until crisp. Turn and cook for a further 2-3 mins or until just cooked through.

‘Chargrilled Salmon with Asparagus in a Lime Vinaigrette’

I

was hoping this April recipe would find the first of the English asparagus in the shops but as I am writing it is cold, windy and wet outside so I doubt it. This is a healthy recipe fairly low in calories and very quick to make. It’s gluten free and Salmon is a good source of omega 3. You can grill, griddle or pop it on a barbecue in the summer. A big platter of this is lovely when entertaining in the garden. Ready in 10 mins Enjoy!

Ingredients 500g/ 1lb 2oz new potatoes, halved 4 x 125g/5oz salmon fillets, with skin Olive oil spray 250g/9oz asparagus, halved lengthways and T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

4. Divide the potatoes between four plates and top with a piece of salmon. Scatter the asparagus and dressing over the top and serve with a simple rocket salad.

3. Meanwhile, cook the asparagus in a pan of boiling salted water for 1-2 minutes only until al dente. Drain and refresh in cold water and then toss with the remaining oil, lime zest and juice, capers, garlic and herbs. Season with salt, pepper and a pinch of sugar.

Health & Beauty

Get Fit for Life: with these simple Golden Rules I

f you’ve let your fitness levels drop over time, don’t worry. If you want get back into shape, my eight golden rules will make it a pleasure rather than a chore.

1. Think positive! Focus on thoughts of success, set yourself realistic goals and tell yourself that you can and will achieve them. 2. Exercise! You can get fitter in just thirty minutes. If you exercise for half an hour every day, you’ll feel the benefits almost immediately. Whether it’s walking the dog or playing tennis, see exercise as essential to your health and well-being.

3. Resistance training with free-weights or using your own bodyweight will cultivate strength, a leaner body and a higher metabolism, which burns fat faster.

4. Avoid doing lots of long duration, steady-state cardiovascular work – such as jogging at the same pace - and use shorter, sharper bursts of activity. Interval training has been proven to have a markedly more beneficial effect in maintaining health and fitness and burning more calories.

6. Avoid processed food! If it came out of a factory, it is not going to be the healthiest thing you can eat. So make time to prepare, cook and eat real food as often as possible. Processed food might be convenient but it is all too often high in calories, salt, sugar and preservatives and low in nutrition.

7. Drink water! Cut down on tea, coffee, soft drinks, fruit juice and alcohol. Our bodies are over 75% water and designed to function best when fully hydrated. 8. Educate yourself! A lot of health advice you see in the media is well intended but misguided. Do your own research, try the advice out on yourself and then make an informed judgement about what’s right for you. You’re unique, so not everything will produce miraculous results for you. 9. And relax… Every day, set time aside for an activity that helps you de-stress i.e. yoga, cuddling your cat or reading a good book. Balance your ‘working out’ with ‘working in’.

5. Go organic! It may cost more, but it hasn’t been bombarded with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. The chemical residues in the food chain can and will damage your health in the long term.

Advertorial

A Great Learning Opportunity

I

n last month’s Oracle article head teacher Mr Schofield highlighted our academic success as we had received a letter from the Minister of State for Education, the Rt Hon David Laws MP. This achievement has further been endorsed by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council as they have congratulated us on our success. Well done Shoeburyness High School! As we strive to improve our results yet further, another important aspect of school life is to encourage students to broaden their horizons through expeditions, school trips and visits to places of interest in this country and abroad. The school’s annual ski trip took place February 2013 and we returned to our favourite hotel in Landeck, Austria, the Hotel Sonne. This year, Students take part in the Duke of Edinburgh

however, we changed our ski area from St Anton to Serfaus Fiss Ladis. This ski area offered students of varying abilities superb skiing. The week was a great success and, once again, the students were a credit to themselves and Shoeburyness High School. In addition to this, also during the recent half term, the 18th to 22nd of February, students from Shoeburyness High School made their first visit to Bude in Cornwall, as part of a residential surf trip. The 12 students from across years 9, 10 and 11 had three sessions to boost their surf skills, along with plenty of waves! The students also took part in a range of exciting, adventurous activities led by the instructors at Outdoor Adventure, including canoeing, coastal traversing, an 80 feet abseil and kayaking. Mr Proudfoot and Mr Gleeson were impressed with the students' determination to give all the activities their best shot and are already planning next year's visit! In April the school once again travels abroad, this time to Madrid. This is the second European Football tour, the previous one being to Milan in 2009. During the week-long stay students will enjoy training sessions with qualified Spanish coaches and they will then have the opportunity to showcase their skills in matches

against local teams. The highlight of the week will be a visit to the famous Bernabéu Stadium to watch Real Madrid play Levante UD. Further adventures take place in July when our students will be participating in white-water rafting in the Dora Baltea River and a two-day descent down the Ardèche River. Mr Beardsall, who runs this adventure, believes that the students gain invaluable experience from this opportunity and, as a result, it has a really positive effect on their school life. At home our students take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. Initially it was the Bronze award but, as they have gained in confidence, they are now embarking on the Silver award and events have been planned in the summer months, including visits to Hockley, Chelmsford and the New Forest. Many training sessions are held during the year which focus on map skills and route planning. Miss Judd works tirelessly to make sure all key aspects of the training will eventually lead to the students gaining their Duke of Edinburgh awards. As you can appreciate, our students enjoy these opportunities and the school embraces and fully supports these activities as they have such a positive impact on school life.

Ardéche 2 day river trip Lastly, we have numerous day-trips taking place throughout the year, amongst which are the London Dungeon experience, London Institute of Education (Mathematics conference), Business Studies and Marketing Seminars, the Clothes Show, Thorpe Park and, of course, trips to destinations in Essex and Southend. Shoeburyness High School is always looking for great learning opportunities for its students. Huw Williams Deputy Headteacher

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
