ith all the recent hype surrounding Southend United, they seemed an obvious choice for Oracle’s next event. CEO, Stephen Kavanagh has kindly agreed to be the guest speaker and answer residents questions on the Clubs plans for next season. The event will be held at the Blues Lounge,Roots Hall on Tuesday, 7 July at 7pm. Tickets will be £20 per person and will include a hot buffet. Spaces are limited so call early to avoid disappointment on 01702 393838.
New Bathroom? Leaking Tap? Boiler need attention?
This month instead of a competition I am using the space to appeal to all of you who have a favourite recipe and would like to get involved and help support Southend’s homeless charity, HARP. This year is Oracle’s tenth anniversary and to help celebrate this I have decided to publish a cookbook, comprising of local residents’ favourite recipes. The book will be called Cooking-on-Sea with all profits going to HARP, Southend’s charity for the homeless, a cause I feel very strongly about. To have a chance of being part of this special cookbook, please send in your favourite recipe whether it is a food dish or a cocktail. Please see page 25 for more details on how you can take part. Thank you for your continued support and I can’t wait to see your favourite recipes!

Local Issues
Within Southend Council the Mayor’s main responsibility is to chair the meetings of the Full Council, where all 51 Councillors debate and confirm Council policy. I am proud that, in a previous role, I introduced webcasting in order that these proceedings can be witnessed by a wider audience. Externally, the Mayor is the figurehead of our town and represents the people of Southend. This involves promoting charities and voluntary organisations, the business community and education. The Mayor opens events and makes presentations, attends functions as Southend’s representative, hosts events organised by the Council and receives high profile visitors to the town. In so doing the Mayor represents and promotes Southend to a wide audience. On average each Mayor receives 600 invitations during their year in office.
Traditional role
A Mayor’s role T
he first Mayor of Southend was appointed when the town was incorporated as a Borough in 1892, the population was then 13,000. Today the population is over 170,000 and I am honoured to have been elected by my fellow Councillors as our 95th Mayor. When I meet people in my official capacity they often ask two questions. The first is “How do you become Mayor?” The current convention is that the longest serving Councillor who wishes to stand for the Mayoralty is nominated as Deputy Mayor and if there are no other nominations and a majority of Councillors vote in favour of the nomination he/she is elected Deputy Mayor. The following year the Deputy Mayor is automatically nominated to be Mayor, again other nominations are called for and it is then put to the vote.
While not a formal role it has been a long tradition for the Mayor to raise money for his or her selected charity. I am continuing this tradition and have formed a Charity Fund Committee to assist me. It was not easy to select one charity having been involved with so many charitable organisations. In addition, the people of Southend are amazingly supportive of members of our community who are less fortunate than themselves and I know through the work of SAVS, the Southend Association of Voluntary Services, that there are over 340 deserving local charities in Southend. However with the help of my wife, Louise, I have selected two charities to support this year: The first anchor charity is the Southend branch of the Samaritans.
The second question is “What does the Mayor do?” – This answer is somewhat longer: The Mayor represents the public face of the Council and although holders of the office will have been elected as a member of a political party, during the Mayoral Year the Mayor takes on a non-political role. The Samaritans provide a drop in service and an around the clock helpline for people when they need to talk to someone without interruption or judgement. There is no waiting list; no assessments and conversations are confidential. For some, the Samaritans are the only place they can turn to without fear of repercussions. For others who might worry about burdening friends or family, they offer a safe place to turn. An additional reason for supporting the Southend Branch is that it relies solely on fundraising through the local community, mainly through their Charity Shop in Hamlet Court Road, which may be under threat as it is held on a short term lease. opening prayers at Full Council and presides at Civic Services. Southend encompasses a rich and Our second charity is the Southend Community Fund. This umbrella charity fund provides grants diverse community of religious beliefs. For this exclusively to Southend charities who present reason I have chosen a different Chaplain for each suitable bids for funding. Through the Southend event, reflecting the balance of religious beliefs in Fund I feel we are supporting a wide range of the town. other Southend Charities. Mayor’s Charity Lunch

I will also help any registered local charity by offering them the use of Porters, our Civic House, for fund raising activates, for a small fee to cover costs. In addition, incoming Mayors have the honour of selecting a Mayors Chaplain who conducts
I hope to meet as many residents as possible during my Mayoral year. Oracle Hair & Beauty
Over the Rainbow T
he trend for multi-coloured hair is bringing the candyfloss pinks, sea greens, lilacs and sky blues of My Little Pony out of the toy shop and into the grown-up world of cafes, clubs and workplaces … Rainbow-coloured hair is the uber cool and colourful response to the news that sales of silver and grey hair dyes have rocketed as (young) men try to ape George Clooney’s natural silver fox shades. No longer the preserve of ageing punks or angry protestors, pastel-coloured hair is being rocked by the likes of Lily Allen, Katy Perry and even Southend’s own Dame Helen Mirren.
Be confident So why not give this sensational look a go? After all, you live once! If you have the confidence, here are my temporary technicolour tips to help you dye before you buy. First up; coloured hair gel. An opaque gel works well on dark hair, so there’s lees need to commit to bleaching your roots or whole head of hair. Start by creating some neon streaks with the gel using your hands, raking them through your hair. Then pull your hair back into a loose pony tail.
from the top on some strands, while others from the bottom up.
Alternatives Hair extensions can create a real wow factor without resorting to the bottle. Create a pony tail at the top of your head before clipping in a brightlycoloured extension on one side of the elastic and one on the other. If you place them right next to the pony tail, you’ll find it much easier to twist it all into an impressive topknot, where all the colours blend seamlessly. To finish this look off, tease the extensions and your natural hair together and set with hairspray to add texture and hold. Using a temporary colour spray will allow you to experiment with the whole rainbow look on a short-term basis and this method is ideal for one-off occasions. And don’t worry if the initial result is a little too bright, the beauty of this look is that it looks better as it fades. Sponsored by
Hair chalk can create a range of effects, from subtle to bold. To begin with, prepare your hair by using a wide curling iron to create a soft, wavy texture. Next, section off your hair and chalks away! Work your way

Council News
Business as usual F
irstly, thank you to the electorate of Thorpe for taking the time to vote for me in the recent local elections and I promise I will continue to do my utmost for all residents of the ward. I continue to be the Leader of the Council and once again lead a joint administration, which has not been finalised at the time of writing.
common goal of a better Southend is at the forefront of decision making.Working collaboratively with other groups has meant we can see the town in the round; in fact I believe we have been very successful in running the town with many positive visions going forward.
A thank you goes to the residents of Southendon-Sea for their understanding and support throughout last year, we listened to residents and, where possible, changed policies if they proved unacceptable. The administration made a joint promise to be open, honest and transparent and we have done that.
We still need to enhance the opportunities for young people and actively promote apprenticeships. I am committed to continued economic growth, regeneration and redevelopment of our town including attracting investment to the Pier. There are many things to achieve, and it’s not going to be an easy ride. The Government has announced a second budget and this may mean yet more cuts to local authorities like Southend. To this end I will be holding surgeries around the town to get your views and a better understanding of your priorities. I know with your continued support we can improve the way of life for all our residents in this beautiful part of the country.
Success in Southend Some of our notable successes over the last year included saving council care homes, protecting library services, saving Shoebury Common from a mud sea wall and the threat of development. Kept our street lights on, begun to develop our economy and create jobs, started to build affordable homes and cut planned council debt. The regeneration in the neglected area of Victoria Avenue has started and we are working with local people on the new design for the Shoebury Common sea defences. The joint administration has worked well, strong financial management is in place and the

Your 6 steps to health and wellbeing
W
ith the fast-paced lifestyles we now lead, our bodies have become out of sync. Long working hours, spending most of our lives sitting, reduced/lower quality sleep and diets high in processed foods, sugar, caffeine and alcohol are leading to increased dis-ease within the body (disease).
Breathing – This may sound simple, but taking time out to breathe correctly reduces our stress hormone (cortisol) and also keeps the body pumping. Try relaxing and breathing in through your nose so that your belly expands and exhale through your nose or pursed lips.
To keep our bodies healthy, we should all address the following 6 principles:
that personality traits like optimism and pessimism can affect many areas of our health and well-being. Positive thinking leads to lower cortisol levels, a longer life, improved health and well being, better relationships, an increased likelihood of success and higher levels of fulfilment in life.
Sleep – Sleep is underestimated when it comes to health. We should naturally be rising and sleeping with the sun. Sleeping between the hours of 10pm and 6am will give our bodies the best ‘recovery’, so try going to bed 15 minutes earlier each night until you get to bed around 10pm and you will see an improvement to your health.
Thinking – There is plenty of research to show
Addressing these simple factors could have a dramatic effect on your health and wellbeing, why not give them a try?
Nutrition – We now consume too many products that are not recognised by the body as ‘food’. We buy convenience foods that consist of a long ingredients list, rather than buying fresh ingredients to make our own meals. All of our meals/snacks should contain a mixture of good quality fats, proteins and carbohydrates to provide us with a healthy balanced diet.

water? Our body weight (in kg) x 0.033 = the amount of water (in litres) that we should be drinking a day.
Movement – With the amount of time we spend sitting our bodies become stagnant. The heart and muscles act like a pump to prevent the body becoming stagnant, which is why you want to keep the body moving. 28

Advertorial
Alleyn Court's first 4 pupils in 1904
An historic year for Alleyn Court A
lleyn Court was founded in 1904 by my great-grandfather, Theodore Wilcox, whose own education had been paid for by his father’s cousin, Charles Dodgson, better known to us all as Lewis Carroll. The school has been led by 4 generations of the Wilcox family and has flourished because we have never forgotten our motto, ‘non progredi est regredi’ – not to go forward is to go backward. We have reached a moment when we must be true to that motto. This school is unique in that it has been owned and run by the same family for so long. Indeed, we believe it to be the oldest family-owned school in the country. However, as the family grows in number generation by generation, it is important to consider how the school would be governed in the years ahead. For this reason, and other positive benefits, I made a proposal to the shareholders (the generation above me), that they should gift their shares to a charitable trust. The shareholders requested that my generation be consulted on this also - in all, 12 members of the Wilcox family. There is unanimous agreement within the family and, as a result, from September 2015 the shares in the school company will be given to a charitable trust. 36

Charitable Trust
This change in share ownership will have no effect on the day-to-day running of the school. In the first few years I will remain Chairman and be able to share my knowledge and experience with the other governors who will generally be former pupils or parents, committed to retaining the ethos and unique character of Alleyn Court. Current parents will also be represented. The charitable trust is already in existence and there is a truly exceptional group of people who have helped me drive this process forward. I am grateful to them and my family for their support, generosity and foresight in enabling this to happen.
Enhanced Changes During my working life I have witnessed a number of changes including the relocating of the main school to its current beautiful site in Thorpe Bay, the school becoming coeducational as well as a change in leaving age from 13 to 11. Change often meets resistance but I can honestly say that all these initiatives have strengthened the school and enhanced what we are able to offer our pupils. Our recent

outstanding inspection report only confirmed what I already knew, that Alleyn Court offers an all-round education which is second to none. A recent visitor, a high ranking figure in the education world, told me that what stood out for her was the incredibly high expectations we have for all our pupils whatever their talents may
be. There is no ceiling. This has been a feature of the school since its founding by my greatgrandfather and perhaps explains why so many former pupils have gone on to achieve so highly in their chosen fields.
The next step While this may be an emotional time for the Wilcox family, I am excited about this next step in Alleyn Court’s proud history knowing that it will secure the school’s future and enhance its governance for generations to come. I feel sure the local community will offer the new trustees the same generous support my family has received for 111 years. Here’s to another 111 years of Alleyn Court! by William Wilcox

recipe of the month
Salmon on a bed of spinach with an easy tartare sauce
Ingredients:
In the Kitchen with Judy Barden
1 tsp sunflower or vegetable oil 2 skinless salmon fillets 250g bag spinach 2 tbsp reduced-fat crème fraîche juice ½ lemon 1 tsp caper, drained 2 tbsp flat-leaf parsley, chopped lemon wedges, to serve
Method: Heat the oil in a pan, season the salmon on both sides, then fry for 4 mins each side until golden and the flesh flakes easily. Whilst the salmon is cooking, sort out the spinach. Tip the leaves into a colander and pour over a kettle of boiling water. Stir it once or twice until wilted and then just squeeze a little fluid out by pressing with a large spoon. Season with salt and pepper, and a little nutmeg if you have it.
salmon and spinach
T
his is a healthy, quick supper dish that can be ready in 15 minutes. It will work with almost all fish, white as well as smoked. Just add a few hot, buttered new potatoes. Enjoy!
Spoon the spinach onto plates, then top with the salmon. Gently heat the crème fraîche in the pan with a squeeze of the lemon juice, the capers and parsley, then season to taste. Be careful not to let it boil. Spoon the sauce over the fish, then serve with lemon wedges.

Next month’s recipe: Cherry and Almond Sponge
Salmon fillets are a healthy and sustainable choice when choosing fish. Oily fish is high in omega-3 which protects the heart and circulation, as well as being a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals

Police Watch
Social media works! E
ssex police have been out at the Royals Shopping Centre in Southend to encourage the public to interact with their social media channels and help share appeals and solve crimes. The Follow, Like, Share, Help campaign saw shoppers taught about the benefits of engaging with Essex police on Facebook and Twitter as well as offering advice on keeping safe online. More than 160,000 social media users already follow Essex police, and this latest campaign is designed to increase that number and encourage more people to help keep the county safe. Essex police use Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube every day to tell the public about the work of officers in Southend and throughout Essex in solving and reducing crime, but the channels are also a way of asking for help in looking for vulnerable missing people, passing on information about crimes you may have witnessed, identifying suspected criminals caught on camera and telling us about the whereabouts of wanted people.
Social Media Success The many social media success stories include an incident where CCTV footage of a man wanted in connection with a dog attack was published on the YouTube channel and shared to the Essex police social media channels. A

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E
member of the public recognised the man and as a result he was arrested, charged and jailed. Followers of the Essex police Facebook page helped find a vulnerable elderly man who had gone missing from his home. A trio of local residents who had seen the appeal felt they had to help officers and began searching. They found the man, confused and cold, having fallen into a ditch. He was taken to hospital and later reunited with his family.
Two-way communication Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh said: “Social media really works. It’s all about two-way communication. It’s a great medium which gives us the opportunity to talk about the fantastic work my staff and officers do on the behalf of the people of Essex day in day out but it’s also about engaging with our communities and ensuring we listen to what they have to tell us.” For more information, please www.essex.police.uk/socialmedia.

A Date for your Diary – Wednesday, 17 June 2015
O
n this evening, between 6.00pm and 7.30pm, Shoeburyness High School holds its Selective Information evening. It is to help you to decide whether you wish your child to sit the 11+ test in order to gain a selective place at Shoeburyness High School. Following nine years of record performance the school has attracted pupils for selective places for the next Year 7 intake in 2015.The biggest change, however, is that we are now also becoming the school of choice amongst families within our community.
A real advantage Key to this has been the huge improvements in the results of all our students, but in particular those of high ability. In Year 10, they gained 71 A* to B grades in GCSE English. In Year 11, our highest-ability students also take their AS English a year early, achieving outstanding grades. This gives them a real advantage in Year 12. At A level, our pass rate is an impressive 98% and our whole post-16 cohort are currently above the national standards in all performance indicators of success rate, achievement rate and retention rate. At Shoeburyness, we have also bucked the national trend for university entrants, doubling the number of our students going on to university and getting our first students studying at Oxford University.
52
T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E
The offer at Shoeburyness for our high-ability students starts with High 5. High 5 Club has been running over the last few years with more than four hundred Year 5 students from across the borough attending. High 5 has been designed to develop students’ skills in English and Modern Foreign Languages, alongside Science,Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). These subjects are delivered through an interactive engineering context by our own specialist teachers, including Heads of Faculty, Outreach Co-ordinators and Advanced Skills Teachers, using our own high-quality, specialist facilities. Whilst the students enjoy hands-on activities the teachers are ensuring that they focus on adding value to the excellent learning that the students already receive in these areas at Key Stage 2. Fantastic opportunity and excellent transition scheme.Thank you’.
www.oraclepublications.co.uk
JUNE 2015
Each week, students arrive, get a biscuit and a drink, and then, for an hour, they delve into the imagination of an engineer following a natural disaster. The students work in rotations, taking part in activities such as making their own torch, building and testing a first aid drop or designing a search and rescue tool; all activities that in some way relate to the theme of the roles engineers play - an approach which immediately captures the students’ imagination and interest. It has been absolutely fantastic to see the enthusiasm with which the student approach all the tasks set and also the enthusiastic support the parents have given us. If you would like any further information about High 5, or have any questions about our programme, please do not hesitate to contact us at high5@shoeburyness.southend.sch.uk or Tel. 01702 292286.
Individual Challange Plan Once they officially join us at the start of Year 7 there is a full curriculum available including two languages: French and Spanish. Our most-able students have an Individual Challenge Plan (ICP) to provide higher-level curriculum mentoring to accelerate progress in all subjects. In addition, Year 7 students, during their first half term, are enrolled in our Academy+ groups which cover everything from Chemistry Club to Music Tuition, Maths+ to Digital Art and Astronomy to Computer Science. These groups stretch and engage our most-able students.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) students complete bronze and silver CREST awards. At Key Stage 4, our pathway curriculum ensures that students have the opportunity to study for the full range of Baccalaureate subjects. Currently in Science, they can study separate Sciences and, in English, they can take their English AS level a year early, which our high-ability students have done with outstanding results.
Unique reputation Shoeburyness High School’s offer for high-ability students continues in post-16 and, because of the size of our intake, we offer over 40 different courses. There are learning groups that are pathway based, including ones aimed at students applying to the prestigious Russell Group universities.Shoeburyness High School has built its reputation on being unique and different and for being innovative and highly successful. Our ethos is based on a positive, “can do” attitude and everything we do is aimed at fostering a love of learning that results in high attainment. Quite simply our aim is to be the most outstanding school nationally.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major
factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
