Shout from the Rooftop! T

he magnificent 1935 Rooftop Restaurant & Bar at the new London Southend Airport Holiday Inn is now open and welcoming diners.

a business partner and established the Diamond Club at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium - despite being a West Ham fan!

Guests are enjoying the unique views of the airport and surrounding countryside whilst enjoying drinks and dinner in the fifth floor restaurant, which takes its name from the year the former airfield became a municipal airport for the public.

He describes the 1935 Rooftop Restaurant & Bar menu as Classic British with a contemporary twist: “We have created an imaginative and exciting menu, using as many local, seasonal ingredients from suppliers here in Essex as possible. I am passionate about showcasing what fantastic things the county has to offer, in order to create a memorable dining experience full of new textures and flavours. My aim is that the 1935 Rooftop Restaurant and Bar will become a renowned venue, not only for airport visitors but also people across Essex.”

1935’s Head Chef Kieran Moore brings both Michelinstarred and international experience to Southend. As the UK still basks in the glow of the 2012 Olympics, Kieran himself has won five gold and five silver medals in previous Culinary Olympics. The 49-year old father of three from Benfleet started his career at the legendary Eccentric Club (established 1890 in St James’, London) as a teenager. From there, he worked at The Savoy for five years, before completing his training under Marco Pierre White at the Michelin-starred Harvey’s for a further two years. Since then Kieran has cooked all over the world, including the USA, Australia, the Middle East, and Asia. He was also a key member of the team that opened seven restaurants at Disneyland Paris. Returning home, Kieran has worked at the Merchant Tailor’s Hall in London and Lords Cricket Ground. He can count none other than world-renowned Raymond Blanc as

To start your meal, the melt in the mouth Twice Baked Cheese Soufflé, served with a Tomato Ragu is proving a real hit with local celebrities and other guests. Further highlights of the Starters include Seared Scallops with Chorizo and Petit Salad, Ham Hock with Red Onion Marmalade and Soft Herbs and Smoked Haddock Beignets with Pea Puree. Moving on to the Main Course, the menu is divided into‘From the Grill,’‘Braised, Roast and Grilled,’‘Fish’and ‘Traditional Homely Classics.’ “We’ve had great fun taking much loved classics and giving them our own, unique twist using only the finest ingredients,” says Kieran. “I think my favourite must be our version of the timeless classic,Tournedos Rossini. We take a 6oz fillet steak and place it on a brioche croute topped with duck liver parfait. We serve it with wild mushrooms, a Madeira jus and luxurious fondant potatoes.” Guests can also enjoy the homely delights of Shepherd’s Pie, made with slow-braised lamb and everyone’s favourite, Sausage ’N’Mash, which features locally produced Pork and Apple Sausages. The delicious Beef & Ale Pie is made with slow-braised, twenty one day aged beef, flavoured with ale and served with beautifully crisp-on-the-outside-fluffy-inthe-centre triple cooked chips. Diners have also fallen for the eighteen-hour roasted Pork Belly with a Marco Polo Sauce, Calves Liver with Smoked Pancetta and a tasty Risotto of Italian Peas and Wild Garlic Leaves. Of course, no restaurant menu in Southend-on-Sea would be complete without a selection of local seafood dishes. 1935 offers classic Fish ’N’ Chips, a Homemade Fish Pie, Grilled Lemon Sole and a Salmon

Nicoise Salad – all absolutely delicious! A wonderful Seafood Platter for two to share offers smoked and poached salmon, Carlingford Oysters, king prawns, sole goujons and seared scallops served with hand-cut chips and garden salad. To finish your meal there is a lip-smacking array of puddings that will satisfy even the sweetest tooth. White Chocolate and Orange Truffle Mousse is served with a praline biscuit and bitter chocolate sauce. You can also enjoy classics such as Eton Mess, Lemon Meringue Pie, Sherry Trifle and a sublime Bread and Butter Pudding. Naturally, Southend’s own Rossi Ice Cream is on the menu. The 1935 Rooftop Restaurant & Bar seats seventy guests in style and comfort, and boasts a ten cover, private dining room complete with its own private terrace. 1935 is open every day for breakfast and dinner, plus Sunday lunch. D

o you have bounds of energy, enjoy working as a part of an enthusiastic team and have a little time to spare? Do you want to help make a difference to people’s lives in your local community? If yes, than you could be a great asset to a Havens Hospices local fundraising group. Local fundraising groups are teams of people who donate their time to organising events and activities from coffee mornings to sponsored bike rides, all to raise funds for Essex based charity.

Who are Havens Hospices? Havens Hospices is a registered charity that incorporates Fair Havens Hospice and Little Havens Hospice. Both hospices offer respite and care for adults and children with life-limiting illnesses. When a family has been told there’s no cure for their loved one’s illness, the hospices are there to make the journey as comfortable as possible, controlling pain and medication and allowing family to spend quality time together in the hospice or in the comfort of their own homes. Hilary Metcalfe, Community Fundraiser from Havens Hospices said,“We must raise over £100,00 each week to be there for everyone who needs us. We do not charge a penny for our care, which means the hospices simply could not exist without supporters like local fundraising groups, who donate their time and effort so generously.” NOVEMBER 2012

What do local fundraising groups do? Local fundraising groups act as the face of Havens Hospices in their local communities, promoting the work of the charity, organising fundraising events and encouraging other local people to fundraise. This year, the charity’s eight community fundraising groups have raised almost £30,000 for the charity, all through organising their own events. Hilary added, “Whether you have a few hours spare on the weekend or perhaps just a couple of hours a month, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved. This could mean helping to promote our campaigns or organising or volunteering at a local fundraising event.” Local groups are given the power to shape the way they want to fundraise in their communities whilst receiving expert support and advice from the charity right the way through the year. Tony Cheek, who is part of the ‘Friends of The Hospices’ fundraising group said, “One week you might be organising a street collection, then the next holding a black tie event. It’s completely up to us what kind of events we want to hold. It could be something new every week, which is what makes it so exciting.”

As well as organising their own events, fundraising groups also support organised events in their community.

Why join? Joining a local fundraising group can be a really exciting experience and a great way to have a lot of fun whilst raising money for local families in need of care. Hilary Metcalfe says, “What’s so fantastic about local fundraising groups is that you meet people from all walks of life, all joining together with the same goal; to raise vital funds for local families in need of care and support. You might be creative, good with numbers or a confident public speaker, whatever it is, every person can bring something unique to the team.” Tony Cheek, who’s been a member of local fundraising group ‘Friends of Havens Hospices’ for 4 years says, “I’d recommend joining a group to anyone who wants to make friends and get involved with the local community. We have a lot of fun and it’s made all the better knowing that every penny we raise is going to care for people who need the love and support Havens Hospices provides. Since our group formed, we’ve raised over £41,000 for the charity, which we’re all very proud of.”

Havens Hospices can only exist because of people like those in local fundraising groups. By joining a group, you’d be a part of raising vital funds for the charity and helping them to fulfil their mission of ‘making every day count’ for the people they care for.

To join... If you’re interested in joining a fundraising group for Havens Hospices in your area or would like to find out more information, please get in touch with Hilary on 07891 514187 or email hmetcalfe@havenshospices.org.uk. Alternatively, take a look at what some of our fundraising groups have been up to at www.havenshospices.org.uk or join us on Facebook or Twitter.

t this time of year, thinking of taking colours used from Farrow & Ball’s range, truly a trip to our seafront isn’t particularly transforms the furniture into a unique creation at the top of my list of things to do. However, every time. one good reason to visit, is the newly opened shop ‘Beside the Sea’ which is just along from Ocean Beach on Eastern Esplanade. The shop ‘Beside the Sea’ is the dream child of local father and daughter team, Roger and Lisa Pickering. Roger has an amazing eye for detail and has been working with furniture for over 25 years whilst Lisa has a great gift for sourcing individual pieces of furniture that are in tune with today's trends. With their combined skills ‘Beside the Sea’ gives furniture a delightful modern infusion on classic styles and is already proving to be a success locally. ‘Beside the Sea’ spends their time travelling the length and breadth of the country, looking for the perfect pieces in need of restoration. They are firm believers of ‘they don’t make them like this anymore’.

Upholstered furniture is also brought back to life using these gorgeous fabrics without spoiling the pieces character and fineness.

Christmas Gifts With Christmas fast approaching ‘Beside the Sea’ also has many gifts ranging from signs using local wood that can be personalised and other such recycled materials such as slate and vintage cutlery to create wonderful chalkboards and hanging solutions. SIA Home Fashion is also available in the shop which includes beautiful picture frames, candle holders etc. ‘Beside the Sea’ is very proud to display & sell the art of local artist, Toni Lee. Toni paints on recycled floor boards using Farrow & Ball paint to create unique pieces in floral designs that can be ordered to work with your own colour schemes. And that’s not all, you can order bespoke cushions, bunting, kiddies dribble bibs, shoe bags, door stops and even a beautiful crystal chandelier! Oracle Hair & Beauty

Chemo Curls for Brave Girls M

y column this month is dedicated to Oracle reader Maggi Hobbs from Great Wakering who recently wrote to me saying “Could you do a column on the plight of us post chemotherapy girls (and guys) – we could do with your advice!” So Maggi, this is especially for you and other ladies and gents in your position. The loss of your crowning glory is, sadly, a common side effect of chemotherapy. The treatment also affects hair regrowth, as the drugs involved attack the roots of your hair and its pigment.Towards the end of treatment your hair will start to come back, but when your locks do return, their texture and colour may be very different to your original hair. Patients may experience kinky, curly, coarse, or even fine ‘baby’ hair.We like to call this Chemo Curls. Your new hair can look and feel like a really bad perm,so it makes sense to treat it that way. Use a very mild shampoo, such as baby shampoo or products for dry or damaged hair. When shampooing your chemo curls, massage your scalp to increase circulation to your roots and remove any dry, flaky skin.Avoid using very hot water because your scalp may be tender. After your shampoo, put on a leave-in conditioner for fine or limp hair.

pinning can break brittle chemo curls. Put away your hair straighteners, just for now, as the heat can burn your sore scalp. Styling products that offer a light hold are ideal,as they are easy to wash out and won't make your hair look synthetic.Go for water-based products whenever you can find them because they are kind and healthy for your hair, and the environment! Hair that is shorter than three inches is very difficult to style and manage so your scalp is still tender, please wait until it recovers and then consult your hairdresser for help with any colour or permanent wave treatments. Make sure you get the ends of your hair trimmed every month until your locks returns to their normal texture. In 6-12months, most of your chemo curls will be gone and you can try some new and exciting hairstyles with your short hair. And be proud of it – your new hair is a sign of your bravery and determination in surviving cancer. It really is your crowning glory.

Dry your hair gently by patting it with a thick, absorbent towel, or use a low heat setting on your hair dryer. Style your new hair gently - vigorous brushing, combing and

The vibration causes the muscles to contract and relax anything between 3 and 50 times per second, which means just 10 minutes of vibration training is the equivalent of 60 minutes resistance training. The wonderful thing about this machine is its versatility. It allows you to get to tone and exercise different parts of the body by just changing your body’s position. The i.fit machines have three different speeds to cater for people’s different abilities. Therefore, people as young as 16 and up to the age of 80 are able to use the machines once they have been given instruction from i.fit Studio’s staff and answered a few health questions.

Money Matters

Pensions – Plan now for that long holiday H

ow does the idea of a holiday lasting perhaps 20 or 30 years sound? No more work, just a permanent break, pleasing yourself what you do every day for the rest of your life.

earlier you make a start, the easier it is to create the lifestyle you want. And in doing so, take into account that pensions still represent the best option when investing for retirement.

It sounds very enticing – and it’s called retirement. The only snag, of course, is that you have to pay for it in advance. And the earlier you start paying for it, the better your lifestyle is going to be when you finally give up going to work.

Whatever choices you make, do take action now. We are living to a greater age and retirement is going to last longer in the future. As a result, it is essential to save more. The decisions you make today will help determine the standard of living likely to be enjoyed in retirement. But the longer you leave it to take action, the more expensive it will be to catch up.

If you don’t, you are running a serious risk of outliving your savings once you have stopped working. So how much are you going to need to fund this long-lasting holiday? The simplest way to find out is to work out your magic number. This helps you calculate how much your pension fund should be to give you the retirement income you want. By taking into account all your likely living costs, calculate how much annual income you think you might need if you were to retire at the age of 65, allowing for inflation. Multiply this figure by 25 and this gives you your magic number – the retirement fund you will need based on current annuity rates.

Whatever your stage of life, it is important to receive expert and professional advice on your pension requirements. The role of a specialist retirement planning adviser is to help you understand the need to approach retirement planning as soon as possible and to gain a better understanding of the various opportunities available. by Jacqui Moyies

Nursery education – what’s the difference? I

t pays to do your homework when it comes to choosing a nursery. This is where children will take those first steps away from home and towards independence and a good nursery will teach children the social and life skills to help them through their early years.

bring learning to life across the entire range of imaginative, creative, social and academic curricula. Specialist teaching in subjects such as music, dance, drama and sport underpins learning with the emphasis on having fun.

Numbers are a factor. The ideal setting should limit numbers so that children don’t feel overwhelmed but at the same time, be big enough to provide social interaction and build confidence. At Thorpe Hall, our facilities are divided into two sections – a pre-nursery for girls and boys of 2 and 3 years old and a nursery where the children are 3 and 4 years old. With a maximum of 8 children in one class and 16 in the other, we can provide the individual attention children need to feel happy and secure.

Good communication with parents is essential. We are committed to regular, open and flexible parent communication and this happens on a daily basis, with staff ensuring parents always feel informed and involved.

Child’s Play

Keeping in touch

“Parents feel fully involved in their children’s learning and appreciate the family-like atmosphere and excellent attention to the children’s individual needs”. Independent Schools Inspectorate February 2012

The nursery environment is also key. Our architect-designed and custom-built rooms provide the space and freedom to learn effectively through play. Children also enjoy our superb outdoor classroom throughout the day and explore the woodland, on the edge of our 10-acre site, in weekly Forest School sessions.

Thorpe Hall School accepts Nursery Entitlement for 3 and 4 year olds.

Teaching style is paramount. We embrace the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum but pride ourselves on adding so much more to

Award winning Butcher, back by popular demand. T

he Butcher of Barling, Philip Splett has decided to reopen his shop to the public. Here we ask why.

What made you reopen Philip? Well I originally decided to retire on the 1st January 2012 after working in the butchery business for over 60 years. Although the shop was not open I was still supplying my famous Barling Beauties sausages to a few local pubs and my existing clients were ordering meat from me on a regular basis. Everywhere I went I bumped into customers of mine who bemoaned the fact that I had closed. Butchery is in my blood and I made a decision to reopen the shop again to existing and new customers from November.

had shops in Benfleet,Woodgrange Drive,Thorpe Bay and latterly Barling. I would class myself as an old fashioned style or artisan butcher. The meat is prepared through minimum use of cleavers or saws but by utilising the natural seams and muscles as nature intended.

Is there a call for an old fashioned butcher? I have seen the role of the butcher change. The days of meat hanging on show with sawdust on the floors are thankfully long gone. However supermarkets are increasingly stocking foreign meat cut to set sizes with little room for alteration.

What is your experience? Splett Family Butchers has been in existence since 1950 when my father opened his shop in London’s Leather Lane. I helped my father in his shop and went to Smithfield learning as much about the meat trade as I could. I was fortunate to train as a Master Butcher under an expert who provided meat to the Royal Family. After I qualified I took over from my father and moved down to Southend and

The service I provide gives advice on what cut is best for whichever dish is being cooked and producing that cut to meet the budget or size required. I pride myself on being able to make customers feel at ease and enjoy their shopping experience. There is also a number of TV chefs who are using types and cuts of meat, such as venison, which can only be sourced from quality butchers.

Where is your meat sourced? I have my own experienced buyer on Smithfield who selects meat to my specification. Smithfield is still the UK’s premier meat market. I stock Aberdeen Angus Scotch Beef, Saltmarsh reared Lamb and rare bread pork. Fresh poultry come from Suffolk, Norfolk and local farms. All the meat is British and is fresh when delivered and allowed to hang to provide the best possible taste and texture. I aim to provide the best quality products when in season at affordable prices. Certainly there is a marked difference in flavour for instance when Beef is allowed to age naturally.

What can you provide us with? The simple answer is anything providing enough notice is given. All types of meat, offal and game. I am happy to take bulk orders where for instance half a pig or lamb can be bought and the customer can specify what types of joints or chops they want. I am currently taking orders for Christmas for local fresh turkeys and geese. These can be on the bone, crowns or boned and rolled. There is no additional cost to the customer in having this work undertaken, it is all part of my service. I produce my own bacon which is cured in the old fashioned way and has a taste unlike anything bought in the supermarkets. I am famous for my sausages,

particularly the Barling Beauties and regularly have many varieties in stock. Cheeses are from the Snowdonia Cheese Company, Suffolk natural hams, Haggis and the famous Stornoway black puddings. For Christmas we are again stocking hot smoked Salar salmon from the Isle of South Uist.

Do you have anything to entice us with? As an opening offer in November I am providing my unique chicken parcel, which is boned chicken stuffed with my own recipe filling. Plus a Vintage Mature Cheddar Snowdonia Cheese truckle at a bargain price of ÂŁ9.95 (as featured in the main photo). Please feel free to call by and say hallo or visit me on my website and join the mailing list to receive regular offers. The website is www.philipsplett.com. Orders can be placed by email through the website or call 216062 or text 07768972579. I look forward to welcoming you all existing and new customers to Burtons Farm Shop, Barling Road, Barling Magna, SS3 0LZ.

2 large free-range eggs, hard-boiled and chopped, plus 1 beaten free-range egg, for glazing Plain flour, for dusting 2 x 500g packs fresh puff pastry 900g piece salmon tail fillet

Method 1. Heat the butter and oil in a pan over a low heat and cook the onion for 5-6 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook for 5-8 minutes. Stir in the turmeric and cook for 1 minute, then add the rice, herbs, capers, zest and chopped egg. Season and cool.

2. On a floured board, roll out 1 piece of pastry to pound coin-thickness and trim to a 30cm x 20cm rectangle. Put on a large baking sheet and place the salmon on the pastry. Season, then arrange the rice mixture on top. Brush the pastry edges with beaten egg. Roll out the remaining pastry, so it will generously cover the salmon, and lay over the top. Trim, leaving a 2cm border, and press the pastry together to seal. Use any pastry trimmings to decorate the top.

I was recently able to help a lady in the final stages of clearing a property which had obviously had some very lovely things in it. She began by telling me that the family had done a boot sale with the first things they had sorted out and had raised about £300, which she found very exciting. Sadly the first item she mentioned, that they had sold, would have raised more than that in auction on its own so goodness knows what else went with it.

Matt Cardle:

‘My new album is more honest’ By Warren Higgins

S

ince winning the X Factor back in 2010, Essex lad Matt Cardle has done a full circle. The 29-year-old has a platinum-selling debut album, “Letters”, changed record companies, but “The Fire”, his second album out on the 29th October on So What? Recordings, is a much more honest affair.

Matt Cardle ‘The Fire’ 29th october, Polydor Records

“The Fire” see’s Cardle playing most of the instruments and even producing the album, “It was much nicer being in control as much as I was, this was how I wrote and produced all of my albums before the X Factor, so I didn’t feel out of my comfort zone, it was just a very natural process. Across the board, it’s gone absolutely fantastically,” Matt draws on a lot of his personal expericnes over the past couple of years for his material, he explained: “It’s prominently about the break-up of my relationship earlier this year. It was tough and I was going through all that whilst I was writing the album. That being said, the album’s very upbeat and very uplifting.” While there’s a particular sound for X factor winners, “The Fire” turns up the guitars taking Matt back to the Essex rock bands he played in before the competition ”The change in sound is also similar to why the looks changed as I’m getting closer to myself and getting back to

what I do and what I’ve always done. Just everything’s a bit more honest really.” “It’s Only Love” will be the first single to be released from the album. Talking about the choice, he said: “I wanted to come back out with something really upbeat and something really driving. I just thought it was a great choice for the first single. Prior to the album’s release, Cardle will embark on a short UK tour, which begins at the Birmingham Institute on October 21st, before finishing with an album launch show at The Scala in London on the 23rd. “I’m excited and nervous at the same time! But I just cannot wait to get back on stage with the band and see how the songs translate on stage live,” said Cardle.

Lawson ‘Chapman Square’ 29th october, Polydor Records

London based pop band LAWSON grafted hard for 4 years doing the pub and club circuit before their big break supporting The Wanted last year. Since then, they’ve sold out their own tours and gained two top 5 singles. Their debut LP ‘Chapman Square’ certainly lives up to expectations. Stand out tracks include ‘Learn To Love Again’ and ‘Gone’ plus brand new single ‘Standing In The Dark’.

Eat Right for your Type T

biochemistry (or “metabolic type”) of any individual. Different foods have the power to strengthen or weaken metabolic imbalances, so you need to know which foods will improve how you feel, and which will make you feel worse.

One day we read that a diet high in protein and fat and low in carbohydrate will help us shed excess weight, increase our vitality and address disease. The next day we hear another expert saying that a low fat, high carbohydrate diet will prevent heart disease and help us to lose weight! Who is right? In a sense they both are.

Externally, we have different hair and skin colours, textures and different bone structures, builds and personalities. We are all different internally too, that means we all process and use foods and nutrients differently.

We are all as unique as our fingerprints - so why would we think that there is a single diet that works for us all? If such a diet worked, then it would have been discovered a long time ago. I follow - and heartily recommend - Metabolic Typing. This is a nutritional system that anyone can use to customise their diet to meet their body's unique individual needs. It is based on the idea that there is no single, universal diet that is right for everyone.

You really don’t need to understand all of the science behind metabolic typing in order to reap the health benefits for yourself. These include increased energy and mental clarity, freedom from cravings and hunger between meals, improved digestion and immunity, improved sports performance, decreased fatigue, anxiety and depression. You can find out more and discover your type by visiting www.metabolictyping.co.uk

Whilst some foods are unhealthy for all of us, there are also some healthy foods that may be unhealthy for some people. The health benefits of any food is dependent upon the stimulatory, or inhibitory effects on the

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Advertorial

Post-16 Success At Shoeburyness! O ver the past three years we have seen some impressive developments in our Post-16 provision here at Shoeburyness High School. The number of students choosing Shoeburyness to carry on their education after GCSEs has risen each year and is now at an unprecedented level of almost 300, including 60 students from other schools. So why is Shoeburyness becoming the place of choice for so many of our local students who wish to continue their education?

Excellent Results As our numbers have been rising, our results have been improving too. We now have an impressive 97.4% pass rate at A-level and an average point score of over 600 for each student. University Success Against the national trend, at Shoeburyness we are sending more and more successful applicants to University every year.

Great Facilities Our Year 12 and 13 students enjoy the best study facilities and largest exclusive areas in the school in which to work. Computer suites dedicated to Post-16 students are available 58

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

throughout the day, as are our excellent canteen facilities and fitness suite.

Personalised Pathways Not all students are the same and here at Shoeburyness we provide different Pathways to cater for their different needs. These Pathways are designed to help students get the most out of their education and provide that crucial stepping stone to employment or further education. A Wider Choice We have over 40 different courses to choose from in our Post-16 offer at Shoeburyness, ranging from traditional A-level subjects, to more creative and vocational courses in BTEC. There really is something for everyone and, if you haven’t quite managed to achieve that C grade in English or Maths GCSE, we also offer the opportunity to study for these alongside your other choices. An Enriching Experience As well as the academic choices students make, we also offer an exciting Enrichment programme to widen their experiences through Sports, Performing Arts, Stage Make-up, Photography and Film Editing courses.

Basketball Academy This year, Shoeburyness High School became one of only a small handful of accredited Basketball Academies. This had led to a number of students joining us from far and wide to enjoy expert coaching and the opportunity to compete at a national level in the sport, alongside their academic studies. We Care a Lot! A number of students find that the impersonal approach and independence required at college simply does not suit and many return after a short time there. Here at Shoeburyness we have exceptional pastoral care and academic support which continues throughout Years 12 and 13, making us a true 11 – 19 school. Come and See! However, don’t take our word for it; come and see for yourself! On Thursday 8 November we have our Post-16 Information Evening from 7:00pm – 9:00pm in the Singleton Centre in the school. There you will have the opportunity to hear about all the courses on offer and chat to the students and teachers which make our school community such a unique place to learn. We’d love to see you there. If for some reason you can’t make it that evening, give us a call and we’ll arrange a guided tour when you can. Bill Peel Assistant Headteacher
