THE VAPE WORLD MOVE : A CALL FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS TO SUPPORT VAPING

MOVE (https://sciencecig.wordpress.com/move/) is an initiative developed by vapers, and aims to present the scientific evidence on electronic cigarettes to health professionals. The goal is to generate an ethical debate about the importance of these devices as harm reduction tools and their potential to save lives and bring about an end to smoking. In support of the initiative, the MOVE statement has been written by leading scientists, doctors and international public health authorities. The MOVE campaign invites health professionals to support this initiative. Misinformation that has been disseminated about e-cigarettes has resulted in some countries in misperceptions about their safety, quality and benefits. Many health professionals are uncertain what advice they should give to patients about these devices. Many health professionals have been reluctant to speak up in public about tobacco harm reduction. MOVE is a call for all health professionals to, freely and with critical thinking, be informed on scientific evidence about these devices, and their value and importance in the final fight against smoking. Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, nurse... offer them to join the MOVEment.

E-CIGARETTES VAPOR IS LESS TOXIC ON LUNG CELLS THAN TOBACCO SMOKE

Published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, the study by a group of German researchers showed that cigarette smoke is far more toxic to cells than e-cigarettes vapor. The results clearly show that oxidative stress and cell death are much lower after exposure to e-cigarettes vapor, as compared to cigarette smoke exposure. In many cases, the results with the e-cigarettes vapor are close controls (exposure to clean air). Unlike many other recent studies where authors avoid any comparison with cigarette smoke, leading to erroneous conclusions about the harmful effects of e-cigarette, the German study confirmed the conclusions of Dr. Farsalinos’ studies, and that the results of e-cigarettes research are perfectly reproducible when proper methodology is followed.

SWITZERLAND: GREEN LIGHT FOR NICOTINE IN E-LIQUIDS

The Swiss Federal Council is preparing to liberalize the sale of nicotine for vapers. The still confidential project plans the same regulation as for cigarettes. «This is good news, said JeanFrançois Etter, a federal expert, Encouraging vaping with nicotine is positive for tobacco prevention because it is the combustion of tobacco, which is a health hazard.»

18

THE VAPE WORLD A NEW STUDY ON ORAL TOXICITY OF E-LIQUIDES

Published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, this study showed that ingestion of e-liquides does not pose significant problems in the short term. Researchers at the University of Geneva (Switzerland) and Patras (Greece) analyzed 42 models of 14 brands of liquid for the presence of microorganisms and various toxic compounds. The results show that, apart from nicotine (not studied here), acute oral toxicity of the e-liquids tested is low. However, none of the analyzed products was totally free of potentially toxic compounds, and a minority of the e-liquids had high levels of chemicals, which is a concern about their potential toxicity for chronic oral exposure. It is important to note that this study did not assess the effects of inhalation of these products, only those of ingestion. According to Jean-François Etter, one of the authors of the study: It is very important to know what the liquids contain, and that for products other than nicotine ingestion is not dangerous in the short term . It remains to assess the long term effects of these products, especially when they are inhaled.

IS THE FUTURE OF VAPING IN GOOD HANDS?

Early April, AFNOR (French Standard Organisation) has published two standards for manufacturers, suppliers, testing laboratories and distributors who take responsibility for complying or not. The standards are designed to reassure users, promoting the best products, and support the development of the market, but are not mandatory. The first two standards focused on devices, and liquids. A third standard (scheduled for June 2015) will focus on the characterization of vapor emissions. These AFNOR standards will serve as the basis of the European standards project to be developed within the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), where France will chair the work. What are standards? Standards define the manufacturing rules of a product to be placed on the market. Manufacturers are free to self-declare abiding standards without particular control. By using it, a manufacturer shall assume responsibility and must demonstrate compliance when asked by an authority. The misuse of a standard exposes the violator to severe penalties defined by the Consumer legislation. The first two standards for personal vaporizers and liquids are available on the AFNOR website (see press release of 2 April). They define the rules for the manufacture of devices, bottles of liquids, what should appear on the labels and instructions for use, or a list of ingredients prohibited in the manufacture of liquids. The third standard is certainly more difficult to achieve, and will require the expertise of researchers familiar with e-cigarettes and their operating principles. Because unfortunately, many existing studies on vapor emissions should not be taken for granted.

USA: E-CIGARETTES NOT RECOMMENDED TO QUIT SMOKING

A group of US experts said there is not enough evidence to recommend electronic cigarettes to quit smoking. Scientists highlighted the lack of evidence on the efficacy of e-cigarettes and do not recommend its use. «You can find hundreds of studies on this subject, but only three are randomized, the most reliable ones,» explained Jean-François Etter. Despite the caution of public authorities, e-cigarettes are seen as an alternative to tobacco smoking by many smokers. Indeed, a survey conducted by INPES in France in 2014 estimated that 400,000 smokers quit smoking with e-cigarettes. Even the French High Health Authority recommends not to discourage the use of electronic cigarettes in smokers who wish to get rid of their addiction.especially when they are inhaled.

DR KONSTANTINOS FARSALINOS

Trained as a cardiologist, Dr Konstantinos Farsalinos now spend most of his time to the study and research on e-cigarettes. With its independent and impartial expertise he has gained an international reputation and stands as the referent for scientific research on vaping. By Jacques Le Houezec

D

most important determinants of toxin emissions. We know that propylene glycol and glycerol undergo thermal decomposition, resulting to aldehydes (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein) emission. We want to see how evaporation temperatures affect this. We also want to see how puff duration and power levels affect the temperatures in the coil. People usually think that high power (watts) levels will result in higher temperatures so they try to reduce power delivery to the atomizer. However, by doing that, they usually increase puff duration. We currently do

espite a particularly busy time schedule, Dr. Farsalinos agreed to grant us an interview from his distant Athens, and we thank him warmly.

JLH: First of all, you are very well known in the vaping community, but how would you present yourself for those who are not familiar with your work? Dr. F: I am a physician and have completed my cardiology specialization in 2011. Since late 2011 I started working on e-cigarettes. I was intrigued by 2 friends who started vaping at that time. Initially, I knew nothing about e-cigarettes, but I learned a lot through the vapers who participated to my first clinical study. Since then I have 25 publications in peer reviewed medical journals on e-cigarettes [Editor’s note: to be published in a scientific or medical journal, the manuscript which is subjected is reviewed and criticized by doctors or researchers who analyze if the article is worth to be published, and possibly ask for clarification or corrections]. I also made numerous presentations in international scientific conferences.

We currently do not know if this is the best they can do or perhaps they can use higher power levels and take shorter puffs.

JLH: We all followed your crowdfunding for your new study on temperature, can you tell us a bit more about this study? Dr. F: I think this is a revolutionary study. First of all, we are able to measure temperatures of evaporation (the temperature of the resistance, or coil) through external equipment. Although there are devices which, under certain circumstances, can measure temperatures, we can do it through equipment attached between the battery and atomizer and by using some complex electronics. In this way we can use any battery device, as well as any atomizer as long as it has specific coil wires (e.g. nickel and titanium, but other pure metals too). Temperature and thermal load (Watts/surface unit) are the

21

INTERVIEW

This graph shows the temperature rise of the resistance during a 4-sec puff at 7 and 10 Watts, and 3-sec puff at 15 watts (silica wick in Kayfun atomiser mounted on a box with a DNA module). The final results will show if toxic substances are released and under what conditions.

not know if this is the best they can do or perhaps they can use higher power levels and take shorter puffs. Finally, this study is important because we will define the sensitivity of the dry puff phenomenon and taste. We know this is a natural defence mechanism, but we do not know at what aldehyde levels is this unpleasant taste triggered. Our preliminary results are very reassuring, but we need to expand them before publishing our final results.

I think the future will bring several novelties, like the ability to control toxin emissions and a bigger potential in nicotine delivery.

[“Currently, there is a lot of ignorance among scientists on the mode of function and patterns of e-cigarette use by consumers.]

JLH: I know, since I am involved in this, that you are also planning a new study in vapers in Canada and France. Would you tell us what this study is about ? Dr. F: In my opinion, we should separate the 3 main parts of the e-cigarette market: C-stores (convenient stores, where usually first generation e-cigarettes are sold), internet market and vapeshops. My experience has shown that failure rate and dual use (e-cigarettes + tobacco cigarettes) are less prevalent in vapeshops. In my opinion, the combination of getting proper education from the vapeshop staff with the availability of more advanced products plays a major role. We want to verify this hypothesis, therefore we will establish the profile of vapers who are customers of specialized vapeshops. I think this will be important for regulators to identify the most useful and effective products, and for the smokers to realize the potential of products sold by vapeshops.

22

DR KONSTANTINOS FARSALINOS

The early stages of this research, measuring the temperature on an open system. The current study is realised with a closed system that can be used in normal vaping conditions. Temperature measurement tests on a closed system.

evaporation and aldehydes release is the most important field of research in terms of safety. This is related to every vaper and every vaping pattern, including subohm, direct-inhale vaping. Also, we need to identify which liquid components are safest to use (between PG and VG) and perhaps find some novel molecules which will be even safer. Additionally, we need to evaluate and improve nicotine delivery. Monitoring of e-liquid quality is essential, and we hope one of our future projects will be the evaluation of e-liquids for the detection of diacetyl and acetyl propionyl, to see if there was any improvement since our study last year. Additionally, we need to identify the advantages of new-generation devices, which seem to be more effective as smoking substitutes. Regulations should make sure not to restrict such devices.

JLH: Recently there have been some attacks in the Press all over the world about Personal Vaporisers (e-cigarettes), one coming from Japan, other ones from the US, not to mention the WHO report last summer. What can you tell to our readers about this ? And how vapers and smokers can tell what is a good and a bad study ? Dr. F: It is very hard for non-experts to understand methodology issues in e-cigarette research. This is a controversial issue, and has generated a lot of discussions and conflicts within the scientific community. Currently, there is a lot of ignorance among scientists on the mode of function and patterns of e-cigarette use by consumers. This results in unrealistic experiments and results which cannot be related to regular use. Unfortunately, this is creating a lot of confusion among vapers but also among smokers who are in reality discouraged from using a significantly less harmful that smoking product.

JLH: How the vaping community, the vapers themselves, can help ? Dr. F: The vapers can help by participating in our studies (like the surveys or the vapeshops studies we will perform in Canada and France) as well as spread the news and results of our research. Another important thing is that they should motivate big companies to invest on research. It is not the job or responsibility of the consumers to make the products safer and of excellent quality. Traditionally and in every consumer industry, the industry itself is responsible for funding research.

JLH: After the vote of the European Tobacco Product Directive (TPD), and the current discussions at the FDA in the US, what do you expect from regulators for the coming year ? Dr. F: I am not optimistic. There is still lack of understanding about e-cigarettes. They are treated as a pharmaceutical devices, asking for extensive, expensive and unnecessary testing. Moreover, attempts on taxation (Italy, Portugal) have been very damaging. It is hard to understand why there is such a strong opposition against e-cigarettes. Moreover, it is weird that, at least in the EU, no expert with work on e-cigarettes has ever been asked to contribute to the regulatory process and decisions.

JLH: If you had a dream about the future of vaping, what would it be ? Dr. F: I think the future will bring several novelties, like the ability to control toxin emissions and a bigger potential in nicotine delivery. My dream is that within a few years vaping will substitute smoking to such an extent that we will have more former smokers using e-cigarettes compared to current smokers. l

JLH: According to you, what are the domains that would need the most urgent efforts from the research community and from the PV professionals ? Dr. F: I think the area of understanding temperature of

Are your mech mod-toting buddies singing the praise of their drippers nonstop? You’ll get more taste, they say, you’ll blow huge clouds… What exactly are they talking about? Find answers to your questions, and much more, in this dripper feature! By Jérémie Paret - Pictures: Olivier Moulin

To drip, you need the power of a mod. Mech mods were once the norm, but variablevoltage mods now offer a smooth vape and power above 200 W.

D

your coils, which will make your e-liquid evaporate. Wirh a dripper, it is customary to use coils with a lower reading, often going under 1 ohm. This means the coil needs more power to be fired, and that is why you need a mod. One law of electricity is that watts are equal to volts times amps. Because vaping values are low (4 volts, 0.5 ohm…), you can feel the tyniest loss of tension or voltage. When it comes to voltage, this loss is called ‘voltage drop’. Voltage drop varies according to a number of points, the key one being the capacity of your mod and dripper to conduct electricity. Hence, mod makers use a variety of metals and alloys, such as copper, brass, silver or steel. Silver has the best conduction properties but copper and brass make for a stronger build and are therefore frequently used, notably in the center plots that touch the battery inside the mod.

ripping’ is pouring a few drops of e-liquid onto your atomizer wick. Drippers are a range of atomizers without a tank. It may seem a bother on a daily basis but it has its good sides. Starting with rediscovering your liquids. More taste, more vapour, everything is bigger. Another plus is the faculty to switch liquids simply and quickly, which may come in handy during vapers’ meets. Also, maintenance is much easier than on a rebuildable tank atomizer. Dripping got bigger these past few years and gave birth to cloud chasing, also called ‘power vaping’. It’s all about who will blow the bigger clouds. All cloud chasers use drippers for one reason : room. Drippers’decks offer sufficient room to install your coils and wicks. This allows for a variety of coiling techniques, from simple to twisted quad coil to clapton coil, designed to produce bigger clouds or to enhance the flavours of the liquids.

The Mech Mod

Specific Gear

To simplify, a mech mod is a metal tube inside which a battery touches both ends, creating a contact. A switch opens and closes the electric circuits and sends power to the atty screwed on the mod. A mod has no safety controls and requires that you doublecheck your coil values, to avoid shorts, as well as your contactors. Mech mods allow to draw maximum power from your battery with

To go into dripping mode, say goodbye to your eGo atomizer and your slim variable-wattage battery. You will need a mod, probably a mech one, and, clearly, a dripper. The function of the mod is to produce enough energy to heat up

26

The market offers a wide selection of drippers. Choose your « precious » according to the preffered design, number of pins, airflow holes, and respective importance of flavours and cloud size !

Liquids Favour liquids with at least 50% VG if blowing a morning mist on the moor is your thing. Nicotine-wise, be aware that bigger clouds bring more nicotine into your system. Get your nicotine factor down – dripping aficionados typically drip between 0 and 3, sometimes 6, mg/ml.

minimal loss. The delivered power, however, is not regulated, and with each cloud you billow, the battery will lose a little bit of power and so will you.

Accessories

Variable Voltage Mods

Once you have acquired a mod and a dripper, you need to get coiling. To that effect, you need resistive wire and wick. The best-known resistive wire is kanthal. It differs from metal wires habitually used in electric works in that these tend to carry maximum current with minimal loss, whereas a resistive wire will resist the flow of electricity. When it does so, it heats, and that is what makes your liquid evaporate. The value of your coil depends upon the diameter of your wire, the number of wraps in your coil and the diameter of your coil. There is a very convenient online calculator at http://www.steamengine.org/coil.asp, and a few apps have been developed for your smartphones. And then there is the matter of the wick. The two main materials used today are silica and cotton. In drippers, we highly recommend cotton. It is much easier to work with and providers much better flavours. Several brands have appeared on the market. The French guys at Fiber Freaks offer a wick made not of cotton but of wood cellulose. US-made Bacon cotton has to fight for market shares with Japanese Puff, Muji or Koh Gen Do, much cheaper and earning strong public approval. l

Variable voltage mods offer regulated current. In other words, it delivers the amount of power you ask. Until recently, variable voltage mods were not commonly used for cloud chasing as the electronic parts were not designed to withstand such electrical intensity. These mods offer a smooth vape, constant control of your dripper coil and the display of your battery life. The looks alone, still considered less elegant, remain the drawback of mech mods. You can use variable voltage mods to drip to your heart’s content.

The Dripper Choose the dripper going atop your mod among a variety of designs. Some enhance tastes, others produce bigger clouds via a huge airflow. Most times, a dripper bears three pins : one center, positive pin and two negative pins. You hang your coil between

27

Basic Coils

Recoiling and Rewicking Most dripper users advise changing wicks every other day. Remove the wick in place, then pulse-fire your mod until your coil turns red, in order to clean off the oxydation residue. Watch out for flames when loose strands of cotton remain attached to your coil. You can now install fresh wicks. The frequency of changing coils is relative to the amount you vape, once a week sounds about right. If you do not use your dripper for a while, we recommend that you remove coils and wicks and rince the dripper in water, then dry well. If the O-rings in your dripper feel hard, pour one drop of e-liquid on them and use your finger to spread it along.

Having gathered all your tools, you are ready to coil. Here are three simple coils. They are microcoils, where each wrap touches the next to ensure that heat spreads regularly. For these coils, prefer cotton wicks, the length of which should be 1.5 to 2 times the diameter of your dripper.

1. Single coil. This is the simplest coil you can make. Roll your wire around a rod or a screwdriver – for instance, 7 wraps around a 2-mm rod. Then attach the coil to the positive and negative pins of your dripper. Pulsefire your mod until your coil glows red. Take flat-tipped pliers and bring the wraps close to one another. Be extremely careful not to fire your mod when your pliers are touching the mod or you’ll electrocute yourself – the solution is ceramic-tipped pliers. Your coil should glow red from the center outwards, symetrically.

2. Dual coil. This is a single coil, twice. Install coils on either side of the center pin, as much in the middle as possible. Your coils should turn red from the center outwards, simultaneously. If one coil turns red before the other does, bring its wraps closer together.

3. Parallel coil. For this coil, either single or dual, you use two parallel strands of resistive wire. More complex than the other two, a parallel coil requires that strands are kept straight throughout. Be aware that this coils divides the value of your coil by half.

Breathing

Breathing, indeed. Obvious as it may seem, vaping is done differently on a 7 W eGo and a 100 W-powered dripper. Many vapers blow into their drippers before inhaling. This provokes a heating of the coil while dispersing a huge cloud that would otherwise attack your throat. Now if you want to billow more clouds than the nearby factory chimney, the secret is in the shoulder movement. Start breathing in with shoulders hunched forward and open up as you inhale. Then, well, blow. ‘Dry burning’ is heating your coils in order to clean them from residue.

More taste, more vapour, everything is bigger.

Wicks should measure 1.5 to 2 times the diameter of your dripper. Drip liquid regularly to avoid dry hits.

29

PORTFOLIO

BASIC RULES

To enjoy tasty and safe dripping, you’d do wisely to follow a few rules.

THE BALANCE TRIANGLE

Understanding the balance between airflow, capillarity and power will help you get the best dripping experience. Here is how it works.

Too much airflow means less taste Not enough airflow produces an unpleasantly hot vape Too much capillarity means the coil will not heat Not enough capillarity produces a ‘dry hit’ Too much power produces the same results as not enough airflow and capillarity Not enough power produces the same results as too much airflow and capillarity

There are no absolutes here. You need to fiddle and finetune until you find your ‘sweet spot’, the perfect balance of taste and vapour. Keep in mind that you strive for the biggest evaporation surface possible - that is, for any given power, the largest amount of coil in contact with your wick.

For high-power vaping, the only proper choice is IMR batteries.

SAFETY

30

First things first : check for shorts. An ohmmeter or a mech box mod will help you make sure. Then comes choosing your batteries. This is the no-joke zone. You don’t want to lose a hand. For high-power vaping, the only proper choice is IMR batteries. Then comes the Maximum Discharge Current, or MDC, measured in Amperes or amps. Your battery must provide a MDC superior to the power your vaping will require. Here is a quick formula to figure out whether your coil value is too low for your battery. Take the maximum voltage of your battery, typically 4.2 volts, and divide it by the MDC, indicated on the battery maker’s website. For a 30-amp battery, you get 4.2/30=0.14. This means you are safe to vape on coils as low as 0.14 ohm. But you should allow for a safety margin. And please note that you will be safer on a mech box mod as it is equipped with circuit breakers to keep you safe. Finally, never, ever, stack several batteries on top of one another. Just don’t. Period. You may do so in your remote control, but we’re talking about much larger amounts of power here.

The Toolbox

No need for wrenches, soldering irons and power drills – well, not yet, anyway. But to build a clean coil easily, you will need a few tools. Here is a list of what you require and what you may enjoy. sans un minimum d’outils. Check list de l’indispensable et de l’accessoire.

The microcoil online calculator

Simply enter one or more data and find the coil value, number of wraps, power, voltage and heat capacity. http://www.steam-engine.org/coil.asp

Resistive Wire

Kanthal, Nichrome or Inox are the resistive wires available. They differ in resistivity, heating temperatures, heating speed and the pace at which they get dirty. Resistive wires offer a wide range of diameters, starting at 0.13 mm. Pick whatever tickles your fancy, but bear in mind that the higher the diameter, the lower the resistivity and the stronger the heat.

Wicks

Silica, cotton and wood cellulose (Fiber Freaks) work for microcoils. Mesh (made of 316 L-grade stainless steel) and steel cable are used in genesis coils. Each material has different capillarity, heating resistance, flavour restitution, life span, density and easiness of use. Do not panic. Practice and testing makes for a happy vaper.

Wire cutter, nail clipper or scissors

Tweezers or ceramictipped pliers

You will need either a wire cutter or a nail clipper to cut your resistive wire cleanly and precisely. Scissors are used to cut strips of mesh and cotton.

A pair of tweezers comes in handy to properly install your wick. The ceramictipped pliers are non-conductive and will straighten or compress your red-hot wraps while protecting you from shorts and burns.

The Screwdriver

A must-have tool to screw and unscrew your pins, and also to build your coils. Without your screwdriver, you cannot vape. You will need flatheaded and Phillips screwdrivers, maybe also Allen keys if your dripper calls for them.

31

Not required but very useful

The MMC (Michel’s Micro Coiler) This tool helps you build coils of various diameters, from 1.5 to 3.5 mm, with one single rod.

The ohmmeter

Helps you check your coil value.

Vincent Athéa

Vincent Athéa is a bit of a Gyro Gearloose type of guy. In 2009, he made an E-cigarette using the tail of a remote-controlled helicopter, a lighter spring and a mouse button. But mostly he’s the one behind the In’ax, a clean and sleek-looking mechanical mod, and an atomizer that many consider to be the best Genesis set-up to date.

A

théa is an inventeur, just like his grandfather was. And a true autodidact: as a kid, he was more interested in ripping apart the elements of his physical world to see how they were made up than in the theoretical knowledge school had to offer. Read on to know more about this unique mod maker, challenging and innovative in his work, simple but hearty in his life.

An atypical background

Vincent Athéa made his debut in the film industry at the age of 17. Jean-Marc Mouligné, a childhood friend who was a special effects artist then, introduced him to movie director Jan Kounen. Athéa was spellbound by Mouligné’s personality, as passionate as himself about machines and crazy inventions. On shootings, problems need quick and witty solutions, from what comes at hand, so Vincent swiftly learned from his friend to see what surrounded him from a different angle, to twist things around and divert them from their original design to fit his needs. The resourcefulness he developed to fuel artistic creation is a skill he would later use in his first experiments on E-cigarette. After the cinema, Athéa worked for the street theater and created… smoke machines! The idea was there already as we know it today in our devices: to conceive a system based on compressed air firing glycerin on red-hot copper coils in order to produce, not merely a fog of vapor, but geysers! Some time later, he would also create small vapor diffusers for magicians to hide in their sleeves; devices that somehow looked like atomizers from the past. But back then, it just never occurred to him that you could add nicotine and inhale the vapor… Still, there is something reminiscent of the show in the vape, he says: “In a way, the principle is the same; what people want is to create clouds of vapor huge enough to disappear behind them.” In the year 2000, he left France to settle down in Reunion Island where he built theater sets for performances and puppet shows. There he went on to make a life-changing encounter: a local craftsman who taught him everything he knows today about handiwork. He stayed with him for two years, learning how to build just about anything, but most importantly, the rigor and excellence of craftsmanship that would later become necessary in the mechanical engineering and precision machining of his first mods.

Bingo !

A few years later, when he heard about the electronic cigarette, he didn’t think much of it at first. However, being a heavy smoker at the time, he got curious and, doing some research, realized that the process of vaporizing glycerin was one he already knew and mastered. He decided to put his skills to the test with what was at hand: a piano string he had to file to get a satisfying resistance value and battery tubes he emptied and dipped in an electrolytic bath to clean. And it worked, enough for him to quit smoking and to work on his first prototypes. But equipment was lacking on the island, and to have it shipped from France was as long as expansive. Mostly, if he knew how to build stuff,

L’In’Ax, “in the axis” or simplicity supporting performance

Vincent Athéa, through his original and well thought devices has put the fundamental art of mechanics, craftsmanship and innovation in the hands of all. His mods may not be for the neophytes, but they undoubtedly make the novice want to know more. And the one who does needs to look no further.

In order to suits demands, Vincent Athéa has now opted for a more industrial machining and Vape Prod now handles most of the production.

a reality; people were exchanging ideas on the Internet, gathering to share their experiences.

Ideas, Skills and a Community

Vincent Athéa quickly presented his ideas to the vaping community online. His creations were an over-night success. People were simply mesmerized by the way he could address long known problems in the conception of mods with easy and thoughtful solutions. Athéa’s motto is “keep it simple”. And innovate. In 2011, he launched the Magneto, featuring a simple but revolutionary switch mechanism, making use of the ferromagnetic properties of the battery to push or retain it in the tube with the help of a magnet. Then came the In’ax, which became the hallmark of Athéa’s devices, In’ax meaning in the axis: the idea was to shift the conductive core on which the wick is placed from the side to the axis of the positive pole to ensure a better dilution of air and vapor inside the atomizer. Athéa soon came with other witty ideas : the grip-stick, that holds the wick on the central core for instance, or ceramic wicks. Wicking materials are commonly glass fiber, mesh or cotton. “One was missing, said Vincent, ceramic! And I got it right for my next creation.” l

Vincent Athéa is currently working on a new zippo mod. Here are the protos.

Vincent didn’t have any knowledge of electronics. So he decided to leave Reunion Island back to France and settled in Normandy, in the family house where he built his workshop. For two years, he trained himself to the basics of electronics to understand the fundamentals and develop his skills. Meanwhile, vaping had become

The Loire Castles: Green Vapes Conquering America Pascal Bonnadier started producing eliquids for his work mates. After 25 years in IT, the program manager was on the lookout for new horizons. He launched Green Vapes in December 2013. “I focus solely on taste,” he states. “You could say I’m the cook. I see myself as a kind of “Vape Maker”, akin to wine makers. Flavourists and chemists are technicians – that’s not derogatory, but there is a difference.” Green Vapes eliquids deliver addictive, strong tastes backed by an elaborate composition and powerful sweet notes. “French cuisine and pâtisserie are major inspiration sources,” Bonnadier acknowledges, having just launched an “Ispahan” juice of raspberry, rose and lychee notes inspired by pâtissier extraordinaire Pierre Hermé. “But I also bank on memories of my past life as smoker of cigars. They’re extremely hard to reproduce and very terroir.” Green Vapes embraces the future head on. “We’re considering building an in-house lab to produce our own aromas,” Bonnadier reveals. Immediate plans however focus on international development. The company just opened a lab in Montreal, Quebec, as a base for the conquest of North America. “And our distribution plans are currently targeting 15 European countries.” Lucky them.

Patrick Vincifore, eliquid creator at Vap’ In Provence and born social networker, has turned his official page followers into a bunch of mates. And they’re waiting on the next batch like there’s no tomorrow. The premium-yet-affordable liquids and concentrates are handcrafted by Patrick and Véronique, Mrs Vincifore, in their small workshop outside of Marseilles. “And we intend it to stay that way, “ Vincifore claims. “We craft artisan juices, like grandma used to make,” he jokes. “We are a stone’s throw from Grasse, the world capital of perfumes,” Vincifore points out. “Our liquids usually feature a strong, clear note, showcased by an array of minor flavours. We’re in Provence, so our liquids often use citrus and floral aromas.” One juice in point is Angel Heart, a sun-drenched mix of grapefruit and aniseed, though it is the more candy-like liquids that won the vapers’ hearts. “The major strength of our liquids? I’m a gourmand! This is not chemistry for me, I’m just cooking tasty little morsels of sheer pleasure.”

Brittany: Le French Liquide Haute couture and grand crus

Located between Nantes and Rennes, Le French Liquide started selling their 50-flavour range back in 2013. “Our original specialty, mint, was well-represented then and is to this day with 14 different recipes, “ Cédric Merino-Riocher recalls. A former flavourist for the perfume industry, he now designs premium juices in the collection “Secrets d’apothicaire” (apothecary’s secrets). All his aromas are exclusive to the brand with over 80% of them produced in-house. What defines a “French Liquide”? “It must suit all vapers, beginners and experienced alike; it should surprise with taste pairings; it should ask questions, keep a share of mystery, and remain generous with a long-lasting taste,” Merino-Riocher describes. “That’s what makes a grand cru. I take pride in designing the liquid as I would a perfume for a haute couture fashion house, respecting the taste pyramid of head, heart and bottom notes.” French Liquides are rooted in the French cuisine tradition, as is apparent with their gorgeous Strawberry-Basil juice, “a nod to [Brittany-born, 2-Michelin-starred] chef Christian Le Squer “. Yet archaic they are not. “Complying with European norms won’t be much of a problem,” Merino-Riocher notes. “We’ve already achieved traceability with our unique flashcode system. And we’re on track to get AFNOR certification”. Still, he intends to fight for his right to vape on. “We need the support of all, liquid creators, gear makers and distributors, to support free vaping! “ Well said.

Bordeaux Vineyards: VDLV – Vincent dans les Vapes The Science of Mixing

When Vincent Cuisset discovers vaping late in 2010, he decides to find out what eliquids are made of. As an engineer, he obtains a tiny room inside the Bordeaux University lab. For a year and a half, he analyses, develops, and asks flavourists to work on natural aromas suitable for vaping. Early vapers gorge on his natural-tasting single-aroma creations. The science-conscious company grows to employ 42 people. Can they still be considered craftsmen? “We still are this rare company that will manufacture liquids on demand for the end user. You can choose between a good 40 flavours, 10 nicotine ratios and 8 PG/VG ratios”, Cuisset explains. Yet, when contenders appear on the market with premium mixes, VDLV’s domineering position takes a step back. “Our original collection was free of conservatives, additives and flavour enhancers. But vapers were looking for more powerful tastes. “ So it is no mean surprise when, in December 2014, VDLV launches Black Cirkus. The new line uses artificial aromas and complex combinations. Flavours are elegant, powerful and modern, holding their own against any U.S.-made juice. March 2015 sees yet another hit: “Les Grands” are premium natural-aroma mixes that any fruit lover will find satisfying. Still, VDLV holds true to its identity, opening a full-scale lab dedicated to fundamental research. “On allergens, passive vaping, molecular toxicity. We are starting to be able to analyse exhaled vapour, Cuisset details. We invest a lot in tools, chromatographers, mass spectrometers. The only possible answer to a biased scientific study is a proper scientific study.”

Nathanaël Jacquot and Franck Ritz

Alsatian Christmas Markets: Elsass Funky Juice Living the Vaping Dream

The paint probably hasn’t dried yet in their offices located at the foot of majestic Haut-Koenigsbourg castle. And yet Elsass Funky Juice has become enough of a buzzword to appear in discerning drippers nationwide. The pair of friends, Nathanaël Jacquot and Franck Ritz, has designed a short line of six flavours that proved an instant hit. “We also offer seasonal recipes,” says Ritz, “that last until the next one comes along.” One such liquid was the interestingly-named Santa’s Balls. “We tapped into our regional roots and had a mulled wine aroma developed,” recounts Ritz. “The idea was to share the spicy notes of our Christmas markets with vapers countrywide. Our liquids reflect Alsatian cuisine in their taste for generous, strong, rich flavours.” It takes about a week of tasting for the pair to validate a recipe. “The hardest part remains to source the proper aroma for an addictive, unctuous mix.” The team is clearly living the vaping dream. “We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The only worry I have if we grow bigger is losing touch with users that want to talk vape with us. Our customers are our best representatives, they take our bottles to other shops, we’ve garnered a few contracts that way.” Ritz knows how much his brand owes to such generous gestures: his graphic designer, Florent, who created the recognizable label featuring the traditional Alsatian hat, came on board for no money whatsoever. “That’s vaping for you, meeting wonderful people. Money is not everything!”

Pola Key and Laurent Conduché

Northern Citadels: eSenses Liquid Images, Tiny Revelations

Pola Key discovered vaping while working on wild herb preservation for a cookbook. “We were the first French company to offer complex recipes, and we made sure they had a complex structure. They have head notes, heart notes, bottom notes,” Key recalls. In 2010, she single-handedly launched the Béthune-based company eSenses, which became a duet when Laurent Conduché came along, originally to develop the website. Their first line did things to tobacco no smoker could fathom. “Why would you want to reproduce the horrible taste of smoked tobacco?” Key laughs. “But like tea, an unburnt tobacco leaf is full of surprises. We exploited the riches of the wide range of tobaccos.” Then came two more collections: Miles Away, stunningly evocative of remote cities, and Backstage, inspired by songs – both Key and Conduché are musicians. “The way we work is, we start from an image, and we work towards reproducing it in our liquids.” Despite the current fad for heavy-VG juices, eSenses sticks to its 70/30 base. For better flavour as well as health concerns. “We do not add vanillin, ethyl maltol, taste enhancers, alcohol or water. Additives are to eliquids what compression is to digital music. Take a Pink Floyd song on a vinyl record. It hasn’t been compressed; you’ll discover small surprises along the way. Our liquids are full of tiny revelations that would get lost with enhancers.” Being located at the Northern tip of the country also proves inspirational. “The culinary culture of this area is just mind-blowing,” Key marvels. “You have the sea and the countryside. We were ruled by the Poles, the Flemish, the dukes of Burgundy, the Spanish. The result is a fabulously rich cuisine,” echoed by the complex contents of the ravishing silver bottles. The pair is currently developing a new eliquid together with a French mod maker. We can’t reveal the name, but trust us when we say that the launching of a new eSenses juice is totally worth the wait.

Paris: The Fuu The Fascinating Art of Vaping

“We aim to offer creative, complex liquids, and the gear to vape it in ideal conditions”, states Jean Moiroud, the co-founder of Belleville-based The Fuu. From inception in 2012, the brand has created batteries and clearos. But they are best known for their black-labelled, all-day, inventive liquids. We meet them as they have just launched not one, but two lines: the sweet-toothed Vaporean liquids and a range of eight original concentrates. “A Fuu concentrate is an original recipe, numbering as many as 10 to 15 ingredients,” explains Jean Lorcy, the other half of the duet. The Fuu was the first French brand to support he DIY movement by offering a range of high-quality bases. “To keep your competitive advantage,” Lorcy analyses, “no need for a 200-staff and a mega-factory in China. To remain competitive, you need to stay reactive and innovative. Which is why I don’t believe that the vaping industry will be consolidated into Big Tobacco. That’s so 20th century. Big is too expensive. And as on the whisky market for instance, the consumer needs a wide array of brands.” What makes the Fuu a truly Parisian brand? “Paris has become what it is today by attracting the best of France. The ultimate Parisian specialty is a specialty from another region, interpreted with top-notch products in an amazingly beautiful setting. We want to produce elegant juices, beautiful juices, fine-tasting juices, by attracting what’s best around us. And that’s a very Parisian way of doing things.” But couldn’t others claim the exact same thing? “A good many liquid creators share a fine vision of their products, a common goal, and a love of vaping, this fascinating art, for the good it does to people.”

Jan Kounen

INTERVIEW

‘Somebody must already be doing a movie, right? No! Then, let’s do it!’

74

JAN KOUNEN

Jan Kounen has been driving the buzz since his crowdfunding campaign for Vape Wave, the first documentary about vaping. How did the project start? What is it really about ? The director of Doberman may be a vaper himself, there’s a lot more at stake here. Interview conducted by Magali Egler — Photos by Bertrand Doudet & Olivier Moulin

W

e met Jan Kounen in his favorite café, his “second office“ as he likes to say. Vaping is allowed of course, so the usual questions & answers game was even more of a pleasure. One thing is for sure: not only is the man very passionate about what he is talking of, but he is also very well documented.

Jan, what’s your history of vaping? When I first started, my goal wasn’t really to stop smoking. I simply was interested in having access to nicotine at home, without the smell of the cigarette, or having to go by the window in winter; to get back to the pleasure of watching a movie or to shoot in a studio and not have to deal with my craving for cigarettes was a treat. I had tried the E-cig four years ago, but I quickly went back to tobacco. Devices then were not really convincing and I didn’t put much thought into it until the beginning of the year. Then, during a meeting, Rodolphe Chabrier, my special effects assistant, had a large tank Smok-it device, and I found myself using it the whole afternoon. It made me aware of how much the device you use matters. At the end of the day, I even went and bought the same one. The first three days, I went down from 15 cigarettes to only 4. On the fourth day, I ditched the last one. I went on rebuilding my own coil pretty fast after that. And increasing the quality of my devices helped me reduce the level of nicotine. I started with 16 mg, I’m now at 6 mg and I plan to get under that before the film is done. What made you want to do a film about it? For some, vaping is just a way to stop smoking. But I wanted to go beyond that, to understand and know more about it, as it is always the case when something has a big impact on me. So I decided to go for it and I discovered a totally new world. There is what you can call a ‘vape culture’ emerging; it’s the story of a world of smokers on the way to becoming non-smokers. That’s huge!
And it’s important to be a part of it, as a witness. At some point, I thought to myself: ‘Somebody must already be doing a movie, right? No! Then, let’s do it!’

Shooting organized by Footoo, UVO System, during a vapero in the streets of Seoul.

What do you want to show in you documentary? In order to understand what vape is, you have to go and film that old Filipino grandma using her mod, the guys who makes his own by the seashore, the big Chinese suppliers, the vape bars in Los Angeles, the community within and outside the web, the gatherings. You have to show what it is and what it is made of. Another thing is to explain how the quality of the devices you use is important, and how a good liquid can be as enjoyable as a good wine. Vaping combines mechanical engineering with mixology. The potential for creation is fascinating! Just as the genesis of vaping is, originating from the web.
You’re clearly convinced, but can you remain objective? When something works for you, you want to share it, invest yourself in it and promote it. Vaping is a real health issue whose stakes are not yet perceived clearly by the

general public. And that is because of a long history of manipulation practiced by the tobacco industry! I’m confident that if legislations don’t slow this incredible worldwide phenomenon, cigarettes will become history before the end of the century! So why is there a debate over banning the e-cig? When cigarette is out, I am for regulating the vape, but not before that! I may be convinced, but I also need to know for certain. And I’m responsible. So if I discover something wrong about vaping, it will be in the film. If a respected scientist reveals something negative, I will go and check it out. Will it be the same for companies investing in Vape Wave?
I’m only humanly obliged. I will film what I have to and do what seems right to me. I’m not under any financial pressure that would compel me to say: “This guy is great, that other one is not“. Anyone who wants to contribute does, with no compensations other than stated in the crowdfunding campaign. Even if sufficient funds are not available when it ends, the film will get made anyways. It will only take a little longer… which would be a pity, for who knows if legislations won’t manage to nail it, five years ahead?
Why going towards crowdfunding?
The TV network that was first interested in the project threw in the towel after the Tobacco Directive was voted. I was one of its first victims! But eventually, it’s just as well. Going towards crowdfunding is coming back to the base, made of all the vapers who created or joined the wave. The number of backers is just as important as the amount contributed. This will give a strong signal and show the mobilization of the community on the subject. I like the idea. The first crowdfunding campaign ended on the 14th of August with €37,308 raised and 559

backers. The second one, still open on vapewave.net, averages about €55,000. Are you satisfied? I warm-heartedly thank all contributors. Unfortunately, the target of €100,000 to be collected by crowdfunding was not achieved, so we launched a new one. But the funds we received allowed us to start shooting, as early as the summer of 2014, as we followed Vincent Athéa and David Roze from Vape Prod to Taiwan, and then to Korea. In Séoul, Footoo from UVO System welcomed us very generously. There, we conducted interviews with Mojo, Kato and Tad and discovered the vape gatherings with Vape Prophet! Then we flew to California where we met with local liquid and mod makers. I keep filming on every occasion, like in Tahiti, where I was attending the FIFO (Pacific International Documentary Film Festival), in Hawaii, or during events and fairs like Vapexpo in Paris. I try to meet as many people as possible around the world but my team and I are very cost-conscious: we didn’t earn anything for ourselves, flew on cheap charter flights, slept in some dumpy hotels when we were not welcomed and hosted by local vapers. Some makers also had imaginative ways of assisting in the funding of the project… In Taiwan, Vapeprod came with the most crazy idea: to create the most luxurious drip tip ever, a gold Kaser encrusted with 7 diamonds that reached €2,000 in auction sale! Pipeline France, Pipeline Germany and Dicodes issued a limited ‘Vape Wave’ edition of 10 titanium Pipeline Pros, and StattQualm offered a very limited edition of a gold plated SQuape R. All of these are auction items only, and all profits will go to the project. I warmly thank these makers for their generosity. One last word, Jan? Vape wave is on track and will hopefully convince more smokers to turn vapers.l

The Council of Vapor

To Each His Own

We know the US brand The Council of Vapor for the Kindred 1.5 mech mod and the Aris dripper. Their new line features the 2.0 version of the Kindred and a clearomizer called Stratos, as well as an updated version of their Aris atty. By Le K de Karl

Kindred 2.0: copper conductivity

W

hat we are testing here is the full-copper version of the Kindred 2.0 mech mod. Also available is a version with a copper inner tube and a stainless steel outer layer. I admit being partial to copper. The global look of the mod is simple and to the point. The body is decorated with very elegant engravings, showing the maker’s mark and the serial number on one side, name of the mod on the opposite side, and the brand’s logo on the switch. The size of the Kindred is a standard one, offering an excellent grip. The course of the magnetic switch can be adjusted through an inside silver-plated screw. The switch is pleasant to use, neither hard not too soft. This is the kind of details that matter when you use a mod on a regular basis. So does the design of the locking ring. This one only requires three turns instead of a dozen to safely lock your mod. Also silver-plated is the adjustable 510 connector. The eightbranch star around it only serves decorative purposes, not allowing for ventilation, as the top end of the top cap is slightly elevated. Not that this is a problem as most atties and drippers now come with side air holes. On the opposite side of the top cap are two screws. One adjusts the height of the 510 connector; the other comes in contact with the battery, allowing vapers to use both flatand nipple-top batteries. The silver-plated screws and copper body of the Kindred offer excellent conductivity. Excellent, too, is the quality of the threading, making the screwing of both top and bottom cap a smooth ride. I admit being very pleasantly surprised by the Kindred. The mod is good-looking, simple, and performing very well. It certainly is a fine introduction for newcomers to the world of mech mods.

Technical data:

- Diameter: 22 mm - Batteries: 18350, 18500, 18650 - Materials: copper, or stainless steel and copper, silver plating - 510 threading - Locking magnetic switch - Price: around € 79/$ 85 - Target: expert users

Pros: -

Good looks Well-machined Smooth switch Silver-plated contacts Adjustable 510 connector

Cons:

- No air holes in the top cap

TESTS Aris Pro, now with better airflow and a tighter ring.

T

he Pro version of the Aris rectifies the faults of the previous edition. Notably, the airflow control ring has been improved. It used to swivel rather too easily. No more fun and games, the ring is now well in place and will not move under the pressure of a finger. The airflow, too, has been improved. The holes have been upped from 5.5 to 6.5 mm. And of course, The Council of Vapor made sure to also widen the hole in the centre rod, so that the air flows smoothly from entrance to exit. The glass tank and gold-plated posts of the previous version are still there. Alas, so is the fixed 510 connector, which we hope to see become adjustable one day. On the deck, there is reasonable space to work in. The proximity, however, of the negative posts to the edges of the dripper makes building certain coil an uphill battle, such as with 22 AWG wire. We tested the dripper at 0.4 ohm on a mech mod with a double coil, using a 100% VG eliquid. Flavour rendition is good and so is the hit. The glass tank tends to heat a bit. However there is no chance of your lips turning into chicken nuggets as the glass drip tip rests on a heat-dissipating steel ring. With a few major adjustments and a name change, the Aris is back on track. Granted, it does not target power vapers, as the air holes would have needed to be wider still, but it certainly is very acceptable.

Technical Data:

- Diameter: 22 mm - Well: 1 ml - Materials: stainless steel, glass - 510 threading - Adjustable airflow - Price: around € 45/$ 49 - Target: Expert users

Pros:

- Gold-plated posts - Large juice well - Glass top cap

Cons:

- Fixed 510 connector - Negative posts too close to edges of top cap - Top cap tends to overheat

80

The Council of Vapor

Would you like a clearomizer with that?

S

tratos, a celebrated sports car back in the 1970’s, is now C.O.V.’s latest clearomizer. One could say it’s a tall order: 55 mm high without the drip tip and 23 mm in diameter. The glass tank lies inside a chromed steel case – or there is a 24-carat gold-plated version, should you go for that kind of thing. It comes with two double silica coils, placed one on top of the other and wrapped in padding, similar to Aspire’s Nautilus. The top cap presents a massive centre piece circled by six cooling fins to prevent overheating. On the bottom cap sits an airflow control ring revolving over four different-sized holes. It snaps into place, so there is no chance of involuntarily messing with it.

Filling up proves very easy. Provided, however, that your hands do not sweat. The rather smooth outside makes it hard to unscrew. The tank only contains 3 ml, which is a pity for an atty this big. But you can easily overlook these small drawbacks and enjoy a good performance. The Stratos delivers on both flavour rendition and volume of vapour. Tested with a 50/50 eliquid, the coils prove efficient. The four holes around them leave enough space for the liquid to move about freely but not enough to induce gurgles. The Stratos is a mid-range atomizer with a few first-timer flaws that are easily balanced by the good performance of its coils.

Technical Data: -

Diameter: 23 mm Height: 55 mm Volume: 3 ml Materials: chromed steel, glass - Coils: 0.8 and 1.2 ohm or 2 and 2.4 ohm - 510 connector - Four-hole airflow control ring - Price: around 35 €/$ 38 - Target: mainstream

Pros:

- Four-hole airflow control ring

Cons:

- Fixed 510 connector - Disappointing tank capacity - Tank can prove hard to unscrew

ETOP-A - Ijoy

Try vaping on automatic! The Etop-A opens a new page in vaping, becoming more accessible to beginners looking for quality vape but not quite ready to invest themselves in precised settings. By Gaël Robert

T

he Etop-A is an uncommon electronic mod, from its aspect to functions. With its look never seen before, made out of stainless, with a black rubber grip, with its interchangeable elements, entirely rebuildable, it presents two versions : short version with a single 18350 battery or long version with two 18350 batteries or one 18650 battery. In the pack, there are 3 interchangeable magnets for the dial, in order to personnalize the Mod as you wish.

The automatic Mod, an innovation The Etop-A proposes a variable wattage from 3 to 15 W, in 1 W increment. It beeps every time you turn the dial. Unfortunately, you can not desactivate the « beep » sound for more discretion. Too bad, but if you don’t have the habit of constantly messing with the dial, and with the Automatic Mod, it shoudn’t be an issue. It will support your coils from 1 to 3 ohms, no problem. It’s the first Mod inspired by the digital camera of today. Unless you are a pro or a passionate, although the options of regulation are numberous, often chosen is the automatic option which optimizes all the settings. You probably know the little magic formula : the Ohms law ? For those behind, this is what you should know to catch up : V (tension in Volts) = R (resistance in ohms) x I (current intensity in amps) or : P (Power in watts) = V (volts) x I (amps) The true revolution with this Mod is its powerfull microprocessor. Setting the regulation dial on A, the processor will automatically calculate the value of the resistance of the coil and self adjust the power to reach the « sweet spot ». Where you would regulate the power according to the resistance of the coil, the Etop-A will do it automatically and safely for you. To get the best vape and the best flavor.

eGo One - Joyetech

The safe route to subohm vaping

- Diameter: 19 mm - Height: 105 mm (standard) or 132 mm (XL) - Tank: 1.8 ml (standard) or 2.5 ml (XL) - Battery: 1,100 mAh (standard) or 2,200 mAh (XL) - 510 connector - Very precise airflow settings - Choice of 2 coils: 0.5 ohm (sub-ohm) and 1 ohm - Price: around € 60/$65 (standard), € 65/$70 (XL) - Target: Mainstream users aspiring to a better vape

Subohm is all the rage amongst vaping experts and aficionados. What is subohm, you ask? It is the use of a coil with a value inferior to 1 ohm. Such coils produce fast and intense heating. Subohm is not without risks for the beginners. The eGo One opens a safe route to subohming. By Gaël Robert

T

he eGo One comes in two sizes, standard and XL. The standard version is fitted with a 1,100-mAh battery and a 1.8 ml clearomizer. Total height is a little over 10 cm (3.5 inches), which will be discreet even in the most feminine of hands. The XL version hits a bit harder with a 2,200-mAh battery and a 2.5 ml clearomizer. Each kit comes with a power plug, two very nicely made drip tips (one glass and one metal), a 1-ohm coil for standard use and a 0.5 coil for subohming.

Pros:

Usage This mod works like a mech mod. So you won’t find functionalities or settings here, apart from the battery that charges through a USB port. The clearomizer comes with a very pleasant and smooth airflow control ring. You fill the tank through the bottom; filling it, unfortunately, proves rather uneasy as the massive chimney leaves little room inside the narrow tank. A steel sleeve almost completely coats the tank, only opening in three little peepholes to control the eliquid level, making it an uneasy process. If you opt for the subohm coils, you can expect an exceptional experience – and an eliquid consumption to match. In the unlikely case you didn’t enjoy subohming, you can always replace the coil with a 1-ohm coil. It should be noted that this clearomizer is totally safe when used with its own battery, but presents the risk of possible explosion and/or severe burns if used on other batteries.

Technical Data:

- Totally safe subohming - A 1-ohm coil for a ‘standard’ vape - Maximum power for a very compact setup

Cons:

- Tank is narrow and hard to fill - Eliquid level is hard to read

Subohming: what you should know

Opting for sub-ohm coils will give you stronger flavours and hit. We highly recommend that you seriously lower your usual nicotine level. If making bigger clouds is your quest, favour eliquids with a higher VG (vegetal glycerine) ratio.

Mini, you Said Mini? Very popular at the moment, the minibox mods are blossoming like spring flowers! Pioneer4You is introducing its IPV Mini. So, is the challenge successful for the manufacturer of the famous IPV2 and IPV3? By Christophe D.

A

vailable in black or silver, the finish is pretty sober even though that model has rounded edges. Anyway, it’s more like a Lada than a Porsche…Probably because of its design restrictions, but the 2 screws on the side hurt its general look, as the separations between the parts of a “car body”. Despite this, the IPV Mini provides a good grip. For me, this model is too heavy: about 200 g with an 18650 battery! It’s only 30 g less than an IPV3 that uses 2 batteries and is way more imposing.

Features and Performances As for the features, they are pretty classical with 3 buttons: the first one as a switch (5 times ON/OFF) and a fire button. The 2 other buttons are to set the power up and down, and easily putting the security mode by pressing them at the same time. Well thought, it is that way difficult to fire your box on accident. Pressing these buttons is very straight forward and of good quality, even if the buttons rattle when you shake the box. It’s not a bad point but it’s annoying. For power settings, (5 programmable memory options), simply choose the one you want, push the fire button then the “+” button to memorize a value. Very simple but a little too much: if you want to turn the power up after one drag, it opens the memory mode. Grrrrr…You must systematically push the “-“button before turning the power up at your convenience.

IPV Mini – Pioneer4You

Technical Data:

- Dimensions: 95x40x23.2 mm - Weight: 150g - Aluminum box - Battery: 18650 - Threading: 510 - Accepted resistances: from 0.5 to 3 ohms - 5 to 30 W power in .1 W increment - Chipset: Yihiecigar SX 130 - Price: around € 56/$ 60 - Target: everyone

Pros:

- 510 floating center pin (non screw able) - Removable battery - Rechargeable by USB port - Readable screen even in full sun - Performances - Accurate and well respected tensions.

Cons

: - Not as mini as expected - Its weight - Too slippery in your hand - Bottom cap difficult to screw in and a little cheap - Approximately finished

As for the performances, it’s a good surprise: how accurate are the out puts to the wattage shown on the screen. The fabricant of chipsets Yihiecigar gives himself a good grade of 92%. However, be sure to use a quality battery to get the best out of this accuracy. The autonomy is pretty good with about 20 hours of vape, no problem (test realized with a Nitecore 18650 battery 2000mah 30A). That result will of course vary according to your vape habits. As for charging the battery, the user has 2 choices: by using a charger or directly with the micro USB port on the box.

Box 100W Plus - Sigelei

The Watt Factory The internet has spoken. Sigelei has upgraded. From the 100W box, that is. Could it mean we have the perfect box mod here? By Jérémie Paret

R

eleased mid-December, tested today, the Plus is the new and improved version of the Sigelei 100W, a double-battery variable wattage box mod. Hats off to Sigelei for being so reactive, taking user feedback into account and exceeding everyone’s expectations. For while it was hailed as a very good box mod, the original 100W was ridden with a few bothersome defects. Not so much on security or operational levels as much as where everyday use was concerned. Take the adjustable center pin, for instance. It was wobbling a lot. This meant you had to fiddle with your atomizer to get a flush setup with proper conductivity. Except not all atties are fiddle-compliant. So, Sigelei came up wih a very effective self-adjusting brass spring-loaded center pin. That spring, by the way, can withstand more compression than what we are used to seeing, and that means better conductivity. Add to the list new and improved battery contacts, copper-made and springloaded.

Technical data:

56 x 23 x 102 mm 140 grams without batteries 2x 18650 OLED screen SX330 V3 Chipset 510 thread Minimum 0.15 ohm Black silicon case provided Price: around € 110/ $119 Target: intermediate/ expert users

Pros -

Overall quality Affordable Power Simple to use Autonomy

Lastly, we get an improved design with rounder angles and a ridged double wave on one side. Male users will appreciate the provided silicone case, conveniently hiding a design better suited for a make-up box.

Cons

- Engraved design Another item drawing a lot of forum - Flat-top batteries only angst were the screws closing (65 mm maximum) the back plate – giving access to the batteries – that were playing second fiddle to magnets. How useless can you get. So, out went the screws and Sigelei only kept the clearly sufficient magnets.

A fantastic price/quality ratio Overall quality and detail perfection is on par with the attention given to the upgrade. The 100W Plus means all-around quality. And what a vape! The stated 100W are here all right if you need them, and conductivity is perfect. In the controls department, Sigelei goes simple. You have an on/ off button, a lock mode and a memory of the last used settings. That’s all you need. Settings are by increments of 0.1W until 50W then watt by watt until 100. Autonomy, you ask ? With two 18650, you clearly have some serious margin here. This is a latest-generation box mod that is rather on the affordable side and with great autonomy. If you enjoy your variable wattage mods, this is the one you want !

rDNA 40 - Vaporshark

A Mod Box With Teeth On! ‘What is this contraption, a detonator ?’ Actually no, it’s the latest Vaporshark creation, but in truth you could hammer nails in with it. The rDNA 40 is, arguably, the most compact box mod today and one of the most powerful. Does it make it a mainstream box mod? By Franz-Olivier Seewald

A

variable-wattage, smooth-vape box mod, the rDNA 40 features an OLED screen displaying the selected power, corresponding voltage, remaining battery life and coil value. The ‘r’ in rDNA means ‘replaceable’ and that goes for the 18650 battery going into it. The mod comes with an LG 2500 mAh battery that needs to be loaded separately, either via the mini-USB port or through the induction charger (not provided). The back panel is kept in place with magnets. Autonomy is excellent when compared to power : one and a half to two days, depending on how you use it.

Evolv DNA technology for healthy vaping Technical Data:

This model derives its name from the latest-generation Evolv chipset, DNA 40. What this does is controlling the coil temperature and defining a maximum value above which power will be reduced, if your wick does not get enough juice for instance. The main point of this is to prevent coils from overheating and producing acrolein, an irritant of the respiratory tract that has the health authorities’ collective panties in a bunch. VG boils at 290°C, but starts decomposing at 171°C. A temperature you can only reach with a very low resistance and very high power. Vapershark therefore targets the rebuildable-savvy population. So much so that on a daily basis, while heat regulation is an excellent idea, finiding your operating maximum value requires upgrading your basic understanding of physics as well as your patience, considering how… irritating scrolling through complex menus can become.

- Dimensions: 82,5 x 42,4 x 23,4 mm - Weight: 193 g with battery - Battery: 18650 - Material: Zinc/ aluminum alloy - Connector: adjustable center pin - VW Mode: from 7 to 40 W by increments of 0,1 - Supports coils from 0.16 to 3 Ohms - Price: around € 189/$205 - Target :intermediate/ expert users

Infinity And Beyond? ‘Sub-ohm’, ‘power vaping’, blowing the hugest clouds is definitely

87

Pros : -

Satin finish Magnetic panel Spring-loaded center pin Three charging modes Heat regulation Autonomy

Cons

Weight An 80’s, ‘walkman’ look Long sequences of clicks to browse through menus Screen at bottom of mod Functionalities require a learning curve

a trend. A trend, however, that entails risks and requires some serious vaping knowledge – and building a coil is the easiest part. Vaporshark recommends the use of non-resistive wire such as Nickel 200. With kanthal, the heating regulation will not work. Is this search for greater power a good thing ? At a time when governments look to limitate vaping practices, prudence would be wise. The rDNA 40 is a terribly efficient box mod, should one take the time to learn how to use it.

Game of Mods

The Stark is a French mech mod, a hundred per cent made in France by mod makers calling themselves, surprisingly enough, French Mod Makers. The top-notch creation confirms France’s remarkable position in the vaping world. Big clouds are coming! By Jérémie Paret

88

Stark - French Mod Makers

Technical Data:

I

t will be clear to aficionados that both creators of the Stark are huge Game of Thrones fans. They borrowed the mod’s name from one of the Houses that rule the series’ fictional world. To vapers in the know, it makes a strong statement that had better been backed by results. And it is. The Stark is simply one of the best mech mods we’ve ever tested. The mod, made in France out of surgical-grade steel, assembles 2.5 mm-thick tubes to achieve outstanding conductivity and sturdiness. Pins are made of silver-plated brass for unbeatable conductivity and minimal voltage drop. Hang on to your hats: the Stark vapes like a freight train! The metal case features the House of Stark emblem from the Game of Thrones series. It comprises three tubes, a certificate of authenticity, a spec sheet and, rare enough for a mod, a splendid drip tip. The mod is outstandingly machined - you will find yourself playing with the recessive switch just for fun. And for once, you won’t have to keep screwing it back on. The switch is assembled onto the mod with a tool specifically created for that purpose that uses the cooling fins to lock the pieces together. Good thinking, but for

89

- Diameter: 24 mm - Batteries: 18350, 18500, 18650 - Materials: 316L stainless steel - Silver-plated brass pins - Tube thickness: 2,5 mm - 510 connector - Locking recessive switch - Comes with 3 tubes, a certificate of authenticity and a drip tip - Made in France, 10-year warranty - Price: around € 219/$ 238 - Target: expert vapers

Pros:

- Exceptional conductivity - Solidity - Made in France - Well-stocked, nice-looking metal case

Cons

: Will not be flush on most atomizers (24 mm diameter) Nipple-head batteries are recommended

the fact that it prevents taking the mod apart. Seems like a pity, but you’ll probably never need to disassemble your mod anyway, considering French Mod Makers offer a 10-year warranty on the Stark!

Elements of Style Five stars on the technical side. Which leaves us with the utterly subjective topic of the looks. It is a safe bet that the Stark will win many a vaper over with its… starkness. The laser-engraved logo remains discreet. The smooth finish of the tube will pair nicely with a wide range of atomizers. The diameter, 24 mm, is rather daunting and won’t allow for flush setups, but the chamfer on the top cap balances the performance-oriented thickness. The Stark by French Mod Makers is an incredibly high-quality and efficient mod. Of course, this comes at a price, around 200 Euros. Quite a sum, justified in our eyes by the conception work and the overall achievement. Let us now hope for a Tyrion – a dwarf character from the Game of Thrones series – in 18350 format.

Skarabäus - Taifun

Go-Go Gadget or Mod !

Technical Data:

Taifun introduces its new hybrid Mod, half electronic, half mechanical. With mixed results, it brings nothing new in terms of practicality and functionality. By Jérémie Paret

A

t first look, the Skarabäus looks like a mechanical mod: no screen, pretty small size and only one button. But after further examination, espacially inside, you will see its electronic part. So, what is it for ? Regulate the tension, the power ? Not at all ! But thanksfully I have asked the Inspector Gadget who understood right away. The electronic part of the Skarabäus has 2 purposes : the first is a reverse battery security : if you put your battery in backwards it vibrates. That’s probably how they found the name « Skarabäus ». The second is a LED light that comes on when you push the button. When the LED shuts off, it means your battery is below 3V, but we recommend to recharge it before that. The integrated circuit will allow to cut the current above 30 Amps, to avoid any danger. A function not too interesting either, because experienced vapers would not make that kind of mistake.

And what about the mechanical functions ? You’ll find a gold plated positive connection, a very good compromise, because silver, even though it’s a better conductor, is fragile. The switch is situated on the superior part of the mod, between the wings of the beetle (flying?)

Diameter: 23 mm Battery: 18650, 18500 , 18350 Materials: Staineless Steel 510 connection Lockable switch LED indication light Interchangeable rings Gold plated positive post Price: around € 159/$ 173 Target market : intermediate/ experts

Pros :

- good conductivity light - Extra beauty rings sold separately

Cons:

- Fits flush with few atomizers (23 mm) - Useless options - On/Off lock unpractical

engraved into the stainless steel. It is small and nice to use, but difficult to lock. To do so, you have to pull it out and turn it to the left. A movement easily forgotten and not easy if you have big fingers. Connectivity is excellent, a voltage drop of 0,02 to 0,07 V, according to the current intensity. You can even personalize your mod with other colored beauty rings. Our test model came with black and red beauty rings, but 8 colors are available, sold separately. Note that the top ring is not

90

just for looks, but helps make a flush fit. The positive pin is not adjustable. We would have preferred a floating pin. In my opinion it does not justify the price of 159 € demanded by the Skarabäus espacially when we’re used to the high quality standards from Taifun. However, Skarabäus is a good mecanical mod even if it brings gadget functions with its electronic side, which you may quickly forget or be proud to show your friends at the next vape meet !

G-Hit K3 - Seego

Say no to backing up Juice We stand at the beginning of a new vaping era. Innovation has become a primary focus for each and every brand. With its new clearomizer, Seego aims at sending back to the stone age two frustrating drawbacks known to every vaper: liquids backing up, and gurgling coils. By Gaël Robert

T

he Seego G-Hit K3 surprises with a stainless steel body opening vast windows onto the glass tank, making it easy to check your eliquid level. It boasts a 3.2 ml tank, a feature that many a vaper will appreciate. But where the clearo truly innovates is with a small chamber, which we will detail further down. The clearomizer comes in a little white package with a beauty ring and two 1.5-ohm double coils. Beware: these are proprietary coils and you may not be able to get hold of them that easily as they can only be used with the K2 and K3 Seego models.

Innovative Conception The G-Hit K3 fills from the bottom. Its airflow control is nothing out of the ordinary with its four steps, but it proves quite sufficient and well thought-out for lovers of both tight and very airy draws. Whatever denomination tickles your fancy, you will get good flavour rendition and satisfying vapour volume. Where this clearomizer innovates is in the top part. Seego patented the design of a small transparent chamber, located between the tank and the drip tip. This chamber catches and stores any liquid that might be drawn up along with vapour, even with strong draws. Say goodbye to a particularly unpleasant yet very frequent experience, common to a large number of clearomizers. What’s more, the chamber also prevents any liquid from falling back into the chimney and drowning the coil, causing the famously frustrating ‘gurgle’ effect. The insides of the clearomizer are easy to clean: just unscrew the drip tip section to access the small chamber and pat it with a soft tissue. Finally, the holding chamber offers exceptionally good looks, as every time you draw it fills up with opaque vapour, creating a truly beautiful effect.

Technical Data:

Aspire scored before anyone else with its Atlantis. When it came out on the market, I have to say it was my favorite clearomizer. Yes, it was the best! But, it only last for 15 days. By Xavier Allard

T

he Atlantis is in the same lineof the Nautilus. Very thick joints for leakage prevention. However, the contenance is lower and the drip tip very large: it’s even necessary not to draw to long because of its vapor production! But it keeps its promisses thanks to its flavor being similar to the rebuildable. It’s almost magical. I was expecting a product that brings me the flavor of a rebuildable with the advantages of a clearomizer. But I imagine we would get there slowly within several years. With the Atlantis we seem to reach that goal much faster. A few months ago, I would have had scruples using Premium juices as Five Paws, Suicide Bunny with a 30 or 40 € clearomizer, but that is no longer the case with the Atlantis.

Pros:

Cons:

Yes, but... ...Every rose has its thorn. The Atlantis is a high consuming product: first af all, in resistance: it’s not at all like the Nautilus which would let you use the same resistance for up to one month (even if it’s not recommanded to go over 3 weeks with the same resistance). But with the

Subtank - Kangertech

The Monster

After a very nice serie of Aerotanks – except the Turbo – how will Kanger stay in the game? The challenge of doing as well with a new generation of atomizers was ambitious! Surprising us, even more. However, it’s a success throughout the entire line. By Xavier Allard

T

he Subtank is a clearomizer we have rarely seen before. It’s a monster that holds 6 ml and, with little waste, it’s a reasonable consummation of liquid. Because of its large tank (diameter of 25mm), filling up is easy. A beauty ring of 22/25 comes with it, so that the Subtank looks stylish on a 22 mm Mod. Its giant size is proportional to its quality: excellent flavor, no matter high end or low end quality juice you choose, and a great dense vapor on sub-ohm. The Subtank is furnished with 2 resistances: one 0.5 ohms and one 1.2 ohms. In this version, the result

is not bad but below its potential. The resistances are solid but not as much as the previous generation (Aerotank).

Two in One The Subtank is also a learning tool: not just a clearomizer, also a rebuildable. Everything you need to start with rebuildable is included: well pre-coiled build deck, Japanese cotton, dedicated top cap. The base and the tank are common, but because of the size of the build deck, the

reservoir is reduced to 4.2 ml. In construction terms, it’s pretty much the same as the Kayfun. The results are excellent and for the price, it’s impressive. It’s not very worth doing your own coil as the flavors are pretty much the same in rebuildable the changeable resistance pre-made. The Subtank is aimed to a limited public: for those who have hesitated for a while to try rebuildable without daring. Even if experiencing rebuildable is not your preferred, the Subtank will always be a good clearomizer. Meanwhile, Kanger gives you the opportunity to experience rebuilds.

Technical Data:

- Diameter : 25 mm - Capacity: 6ml (or 4.2 ml on rebuildable) - Materials: stainless steel/Pyrex - 2 resistances (0.5 and 1.2 ohms) - Spring based 510 connection - Airflow: 4 positions (including one closed) - Accessories: Resistances, extra top cap, base and bell RBA, 2 screws, screwdriver, Japanese cotton, 2 coils. - Price: around € 40/$ 44 - Target market: confirmed vapers that hesitate to pass on rebuildable

Pros: -

Very big reservoir Awesome flavors Clearomizer + rebuildable for the same price Sub-Ohm resistances Reasonable price

Cons

Flavours Ahead! A newcomer on the rapidly-growing French scene, Volute Modz introduces its firts dripper, the Richelieu. And claims that the clearly flavour-oriented atomizer is a game-changer. Let’s see about that. By Jérémie Paret

H

ow tough it is to make a name for oneself among the many drippers. The trend being what it is, we’re just a bit swamped in new releases. Still, a handful of items need no help to shine. The Richelieu is one of these, original both by conception and usage. First, the dripper has a deep deck which, for a dripper, can reasonably be called huge. I usually do not care very much about this aspect, given that a dripper’s native defect is leakage. You’ve got juice all over the place. Which is why I only dampen my wicks

and add liquid regularly. The Richelieu is the first atty that’s making me change my ways. Because, you see, it is watertight. Consequently, the autonomy compared to other drippers is massive, as the absence of leakage makes the deep deck simply… useful. This key point allows Volute Modz to offer a hybrid uniting the best of both RTA and RDA worlds. Handling the Richelieu is alarmingly simple, and some would do well to take a page out of its book. The top cap shows several ridges

Richelieu - Volute Modz

Technical Data:

‘What do you mean, there’s banana in there?’ Let’s talk flavours a bit. They are given a major boost here, thanks to the coiling deck. You build a vertical coil, along a threaded rod. At first it seems like a headache and a half,

95

Pros -

Fantastic flavours! Watertight Easy coiling Autonomy

Cons

© Gilor

but coiling the Richelieu turns out to be surprisingly easy. The atty was conceived for single coiling, but Volute Modz has added at the bottom of the threaded rod a welcome brass plate which makes double coiling equally a breeze. And for once, what they say is true: with a coil value of 0.4 to 0.6 ohm, you do rediscover your liquids. So clearly, if cloud chasing is your thing, you’ll want to walk away – or take out the drill bits. But if flavour is your quest, the quest ends here: you have found the Richelieu.

that will face the ridges in the deck. Pick your ridge to either shut the atty down entirely, or set the airflow from almost none to… not a whole lot. That is unfortunately the Richelieu’s main drawback. Admittedly, the flavours are bang on, but the timid airflow will bother the dripping enthusiast. If, on the other hand, your daily vape is on a Taifun-style RTA, you will feel right at home.

Lemo - Eleaf

Pragmatism Art With the Lemo, Eleaf gives everyone access to an easy rebuidable atomizer at affordable prices. An appointment with quality? By Jérémie Paret

Technical Data:

No Risk Taking!

Pros:

or 40 € ($ 43), don’t wait for a miracle. But, the Lemo has more than one trick up its sleeve. Of course the quality of fabrication is not as good as the Kayfun, but for a fraction of the price, you can get an RTA, that is not the best looking but that keeps its promises in vaping terms. And more, it has nothing to envy to many atomizers on the market because it has classical but interesting functions like a variable airflow or a build deck inspired by the Kayfun 3.1 (single coil). The Lemo is also pre-mounted with a single coil, that you will not keep to build your own, as well as the pack of cotton in the box. Unusual, the packaging is very cool, inspired by that of… the IPhone. The Tank is made of Pyrex, which is a good addition, but so thin that the user should be very careful.

- Diameter: 23 mm - Length: 86 mm - Tank: around 5ml - Materials: stainless steel - Adjustable 510 connection - Furnished with drip tip, Pyrex tank, extra joints, cotton, screwdriver, user manual

You will understand, the Lemo plays it safe, based on what’s been working good for a while. Same thing with the design, it’s banal, so that you’ll have the impression of seeing it before, like a new album of AC/DC! Well, when one has the right recipe… The only major innovation for the Lemo is its adjustable airflow: the screw situated underneath the build deck allows you to adjust the airflow with accuracy and when it’s opened, it blows clouds!! Too bad filling up the tank was not as well engineered: filling up the tank by the bottom of the atomizer with a little screw that oxidizes rapidly is not very practical.

Price: around € 40/$ 45 Designed with the essentials in mind Good airflow for an RTA

Cons:

Despite a few negative points, the Lemo is still a good investment to try rebuildable atomizers, before passing to a high quality model. For those crazy about kanthal, it’s limited. We’re still wondering how it will last in time.

Origen V2 Genesis - Norbert

Genesis, Episode 2 : Norbert is back!

For a while now, we’ve been reading on forums a lot of good things about a new atomizer designed and fabricated by NORBERT, an Hungarian moder. But the Genesis, isn’t it a little has been? By Christophe D.

P

retty sober, the Origen V2 Genesis gives you the impression that it’s another difficult model to use. But that impression goes away once you examine it. Many manufacturers hesitate to consider this type of model, because it’s not easy for a beginner to start off with a Genesis: it’s rare to get good results the first time you use it. However, NORBERT‘s last model is a dripper with a reservoir. Because of its design of 4 holes in the build deck, the user has many choices for its builds: cotton, Fiber Freaks or mesh. To improve the build deck, already well finished, the kit comes with extra parts to build in single or dual coil.

Easy to use to bring the perfect flavor Filling up is very easy: just take off a finger screw to insert in a normal size bottle. Everything is so well positioned that the user can not make any mistake, such as the airflows very well positioned and adjustable to the 4 positions. By using this atomizer, there is no need to use a dripper anymore! The vapor is warm, perfect for a gourmet juice! End over 45 W, no dry hit! Totally unexpected: it’s necessary to cut the nicotine level down, the hit throat being too strong as I’m

concerned. All the tests I’ve done, either with mesh, cotton or Fiber Freaks were conclusive. A little advice: I took the bottom joint off in order to insert the top cap easier. Attention also, the 510 connection is not adjustable. The screw only serves for the positive post to get the kanthal into different positions. We regret the packaging was not better and wish the atomizer would come with a drip tip.

Pros:

- Very solid - Extremely compact - Uses mesh/cotton/ Fiber Freaks - Joints and screws furnished - 2 functions well defined single/dual coil

Cons:

Small capacity A little hard to manipulate with new joints Reservoir complicated to dissemble to clean it Nonadjustable center pin made out of brass, so too fragile! 510 threading too fragile

A Vaping Revolution

SvoëMesto strikes back with a new version of its legendary Kayfun RTA. The fully revamped V4 is nothing short of a vaping revolution. By Jérémie Paret

ost current brands tend to offer improvements over their former products, rather than full overhauls. Our pages abundantly testify to that. Yet a few craftsmen, caring very little about resting on their laurels, seem set on shaping the future of vaping. SvoëMesto, it appears, belongs to the latter category. As a result, what we get here is a totally newfangled version of the Kayfun. And right off the bat we should say how exceptional vaping on it feels. How demanding, too. With a whopping 41 parts, you’re guaranteed to spend a good while reading the rather well-made and exhaustive user manual. Alternately, you can turn to online videos. The micro-engineering of this atty is as top-notch as the conception itself. You can access your coil without draining your tank. A liquid flow control, set by turning the atty on its base, allows to easily finding your sweet spot while preventing leakage during transportation. Airflow, of course, is adjustable. Does it seem rather tight on low res? Fear not, for about 10 Euro, SvoëMesto offers a separate sub-ohm kit. And that kit is the cat’s pajamas. What it gives you is a much wider airflow and a larger deck on which a dual coil will fit comfortably. This sub-ohm kit turns the Kayfun V4 into the closest thing there is to a dripper.

The Chameleon Atomizer As looks go, the Kayfun V4 is rather on the heavy side, although of balanced proportions. It comes with several connectors so you can hybridize it with the latest top-of-range mods such as the ProVari P3. No shortage of tanks with PMMA, Pyrex and

- Top-notch building standards - Versatility - Wide range of possible coils and accessories

Cons

Airflow adjusting requires a terribly fine and long screwdriver Hybrid connectors are difficult to install

stainless steel versions provided. We were also able to test a PMMA bell cap that makes the atty easy on the eye. One caveat though: the diameter of the Kayfun V4, an unfortunate 23 mm. There seems to be a trend here, adding 1 mm everywhere to make us buy more gear. Other than that, it is the perfect atty for expert vapers. Should you belong to that persuasion, make a dash to your nearest shop – unless you’re already there.

GT II - Taifun

The GT I version 1,5 Taifun comes back on the scene with the GT II. This High End atomizer in direct competition with the Kayfun by SvoeMesto, has been highly anticipated by many vapers for several months, espacially those of the GT community. So, was it worth the wait? By Jérémie Paret

P

robably not, espacially if you are a fan of the first model, the GT I. In fact, the new innovations, compare to the first GT, are light. For me, that’s a problem: on one hand, the GT is a fabulous RTA that gives great flavors, able to produce a good quality of vapor, on the other hand, it’s the same version as the first model, but in 1,5 or 1,2. After you think about it, why change a team that wins? That’s probably what Taifun thought while they designed the GT II. As for the innovations, we find some improvments expected by the commnity, starting

Pros:

Incredible flavors Easy to build Constant quality in every piece Reliable Compatible with GT I pieces

Cons:

Not flush on many mods (23 mm) Nothing really new compared to the GT I Can leak through the airflow

with the airflow. On the GT I, it was not adjustable, even though it was, at that time, properly sized, things have rapidly changed. Today, when I see the huge cloud that comes out of my Mutation X, it’s hard to go back to a small hole of 1,2 mm, even with a rebuildable with tank (like many say, once you’ve tried a dripper...). Many users even make a bigger hole with a drill. Taifun has improved his model with an adjustable airflow with rotation ring and 2 lines of 5 holes help to get the air to the coil. Its better but it could have been bigger. Be careful of leakage through the airflow, an inherent problem to a large majority of RTA, whose solution is hard to find. This requires finding the balance between leakage and excessive compression of the wick (dry burn). Another innovation: the Stainless steel tank of the GT II can be replaced by a Pyrex tank. Simply unscrew the top cap to change it.

Anything else? Except for its new design, the GT II is identical to its predecessor. Then certainly, and it’s pretty cool, all the parts of the GT I can be used with the GT II, but why not offer to the users of the first model, an upgrade kit, sold separately? To resume, if you don’t have a Taifun, and you’re looking for a High End RTA, then go for it! For the others, just buy some more juice and pull out your drill.

Magma V2 - Paradigm Modz

Technical Data:

Vape in fusion The Magma dripper is presented to you today in its second version. Known for its fabrication quality, will this new model from Paradigm Modz reach the expectations? By Jérémie Paret

-

Diameter: 22 mm Materials: stainless steel Connection: adjustable 510 Dual Coil set up Adjustable airflow Delivered in a case, with no drip tip Price: around $ 120 Target market: experts

Pros:

- Airflow positioning - No joint - High quality fabrication - Style

paradigm is a framework containing the basic assumptions, ways of thinking and methodology that are commonly accepted. We often use the expression “change of paradigm” to name a profound change in the human comprehension of its environment: the passage of a vision of a flat Earth to a round Earth is a good example. The discovery of the relativity of time is also a good example. At Paradigm Modz, based in the Philippines, that’s probably what they said about vaping compared to smoking. Unfortunately, the Magma V2 pretty far from this concept and do not bring any innovation in the drippers world. Worst, it’s not even better than its predecessor, due to a big mistake in conception, which penalizes the usage a lot. In fact, when we use a dripper, we have to put juice regularly on the coils to avoid a dry burn. This regular manipulation implies a top cap that takes on and off with ease and rapidity. The problem with the Magma V2 is that the top cap is directly screwed on the airflow ring. So, every time you want to put juice on the coils, you have to unscrew the top cap

completely which leaves the airflow ring without any attachment. Very bad point. You will always be able to use the hole of the drip tip to drip the juice on your coils, but it’s not very convenient. Paradigm explains why this choice was made to propose a RDA with no joint. It could have been a good idea, but there is another problem: during inhalation, the airflow passage makes noise, the whistle is loud and very annoying. The first version, equipped with joints, didn’t have those problems.

Cons: -

Not very convenient to use Loud Sold without drip tip

An Explosion of flavors Thanks fully, the Magma V2 has good points such as the position of the airflow holes, directly underneath the coils like an RTA that brings excellent flavors. Careful anyway not to put too much liquid, or it will leak throughout the holes. The quality of fabrication is also a strong point. Every piece shows attention to details, as well as the black finish of our test model. As an extra style and customization options, we will note the several airflow rings in steel, copper and brass, highly

used in the vaping community. As for the price, we will only give it to you in dollars, since we didn’t find any distributors in France, at least for this version V2: 120 dollars furnished without drip tip. It’s pretty expensive, but with the exchange rate, it’s not that bad. If you are ready to forgive its defaults and are looking for great flavors, the Magma V2 is worth trying.
