Anthony Breitbach PhD, ATC, FASAHP Associate Professor/Director Athletic Training Program Doisy College of Health Sciences
Learning Objectives • Describe Athletic Trainers and their scope of practice • Evaluate the potential benefits and disadvantages/challenges of adding Athletic Trainers to SBHCs • Describe how Athletic Trainers can be integrated in SBHCs • Develop a plan for introducing ATs into SBHCs in the participants’ SBHCs
About Us
Athletic Training(AT) – Scope of Practice “Athletic trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize patient physical capacity, health and well-being. The practice of athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination and diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of emergent, acute, subacute, and chronic neuromusculoskeletal conditions, and certain medical conditions in order to minimize subsequent impairments, functional limitations, disability, and societal limitations.
AT- Scope of Practice • • • •
Entry-level practice Continuing Education and Training State Regulation Public Protection
AT settings • • • •
College and Universities Secondary schools Professional Sports Physician practices and specialty clinics • Performing Arts • Occupational health departments – Police and Fire – Manufacturing
Why ATs? • Interprofessional vs Multiprofessional • Public health issue – Lack of ATs in public schools – Staggering cost of sports related injury in ED – AT can save lives
• Cost Effective care • Potential reduction in non-emergent ED visits – Onsite rehabilitation
Why ATs? (cont’d) • Concussion Management – Return to Play – Return to Learn
Challenges/Disadvantages • New Concept for everyone • Buy in from stakeholders – Teachers/coaches – Administrators (school level and district level) – Students – School nurse – NP and SBHC staff
Challenges/Disadvantages • Administrative Challenges – EMR system – MOU limitations
• Financial sustainability • Population able to treat may be limited by practice act
AT Integration • Our Initial Model – Wellness-based Interprofessional School Health (WISH) • University +SBHC partnership ( via Mercy Hospital System)
– Complementary collaborative roles – Common physical facility – Shared medical documentation
AT Integration • AT’s Roles and Responsibilities – Injury assessment – Injury Rehabilitation – Sport event coverage – Referrals
AT Integration • Current Model • Alternatives – AT coming in afterschool in working out of SBHC – AT hired directly through school but works with SBHC/in SBHC
