Since 1985, Dr. Caroline Leaf has researched the science of thought to help people achieve their greatest potential through techniques that align with brain science and God’s Word. Recently, she appeared on The Place for Miracles and Make Your Day Count to share insights on the power of our thinking—the unique gift that God has put in each of us. Every person who has ever lived is special in God’s eyes. Psalm 139:14 says that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. According to Dr. Caroline Leaf, who has researched the brain, thinking, and communication for 25 years, “Every one of us is gifted.” Every person thinks in a unique way—and that unique way of thinking is your gift from God. Although many people see giftedness as something that only a few people— like Einstein or Shakespeare—ever have, there is a different way to see it. “Giftedness is not what we think it is,” Dr. Leaf explains. “It is not the talent 4
that the world sees, or your skills. Your true gift is how you uniquely think. When you know how to tap into your unique way of thinking, you can apply it as a gift wherever God wants you to apply it.”
Your Thinking Is as Unique as Your Fingerprints Many factors combine to make your thinking special. You have visited places, seen things, and learned facts that all combine to give you a special way of looking at the world. But you also have a unique way to process what you learn. In her research,
Dr. Leaf has identified seven ways that we process what we experience, which she calls the seven pillars of thought. (She has designed a questionnaire to help you find your unique gift, which can be found in her book The Gift in You.) Everyone processes information through all seven areas. But we don’t process information in the same order…and that is what makes each of us unique. We all think at our own speed and in our own order. Not even identical twins think exactly alike.
Your Brain Can Change…and So Can Your Thinking Knowing our gift—how we uniquely think—is only the beginning of how we can fulfill our God-given potential. We must then make the most of our thinking by building healthy thought patterns and removing toxic, unhealthy thinking. In other words, we must rewire our brains. The Bible refers to this process in Romans 12:1 as renewing the mind. Dr. Leaf calls it rewiring toxic thoughts to overcome our gift-blockers. But the principle is the same. “The enemy wants to build strongholds in our minds. When we have toxic thoughts—these gift-blockers— operating in us, our ability to think is blocked, we feel confused, and we can’t feel peace. That’s why we have to renew our minds and bring all thoughts into captivity to Christ.” The good news is, your brain is remarkably flexible. Scientific research has shown that the brain can change. In fact, the brain can actually get better as we age, as Dr. Leaf points out.

“The older you get, the better your brain. As you age, your brain matures. The more you use your brain, the better it gets…and the more intelligent you become. You can even stimulate the brain to the point where major change can happen.” In other words, we can renew our minds, cast down wrong thinking, and change our thought life. And science proves it. The process is called neuroplasticity.
Right and Wrong Thinking Both good and bad thoughts create structures in the brain, which are our thoughts. Scans of the brain reveal these structures, which resemble trees and are called neurons. When the Bible talks about a tree being known by its fruits (Matthew 12:33), it could easily be describing what brain science reveals about our thinking processes. Healthy thoughts build a healthy tree… which leads to clear thinking and good decisions. Unfortunately, toxic thoughts also build structures in the brain. Wrong thinking literally impedes the flow of our thoughts, much like a roadblock keeps a car from reaching its destination. This hinders us from 5
successfully tapping into the uniqueness that is our gift from God. It can also make us sick, because negative thoughts are reflected in the body and mind as illness. Depression… anxiety…all kinds of diseases have been linked to our thought life. For this reason, it is important to guard our thought life and get rid of the toxic thinking that acts as a giftblocker. Unless we get rid of these toxic gift blockers, they stay in our brain, and they are going to affect us. Gift-blockers result in the wrong activity in the brain. In other words, the brain can’t function as fully as it should because there will be electrical chemical chaos from the toxic thoughts. The whole brain is affected, and in a negative way. The things we learn to think become real realities…They grow into thoughts and dictate what we become. As Proverbs 23:7 puts it, As a person thinks in his heart, so is he. We become what we think.
Confronting and Changing Wrong Thinking It is possible to get rid of wrong thinking and build up healthy thinking. When God tells us to think on good things in Philippians 4:8, it is because He has literally given our brains the ability to do so—no matter how old we are. We do this through getting rid of the old thoughts and building in new ones. Dr. Leaf explains how to do this in her book Who Switched Off My Brain? According to Dr. Leaf, we can’t always control the events and the circumstances of life, but we can control our reaction to what happens. When we learn to examine our thought life, 6
we can see clues to wrong thinking… And those clues can then help us to embrace right thinking instead. If we want to know when we have giftblockers in action, Dr. Leaf says we should look for symptoms of stress, depression, or confusion, which can be signs that we have wrong thinking to confront. According to Dr. Leaf, “When you’re under stress, it means you are being directed by a toxic way of thinking, which means you are not thinking clearly. Giftblockers don’t let us move through our thinking properly, and our body translates that as stress. We get overloaded, and we experience foggy thinking.” The effects of wrong thinking accumulate, unless we do something about it. What we do about it is up to us. And what we choose will affect our bodies and our minds. “We have the ability to choose,” Dr. Leaf emphasizes. “Many people will say I can’t, but I can’t is also a decision. When we say I can’t, we build a toxic tree that gets used for everything. So, we actually add to the problem every time we build that tree with the words I can’t. “To get straight to the heart of things, gift blockers are sins. Call on God immediately, and ask Him to help you out. If you ignore the wrong thought or try to suppress it, it will cause you stress… And if you push it back into the unconscious, it will eventually become worse than it first was. “We can train ourselves to suppress problems, which is what a lot of people do. But those thoughts and emotions are alive. They’re dynamic, and like a volcano, they will eventually burst in your body, in your mind, somewhere.”
Real Change Is a Real Possibility for You When it comes to changing your thinking, Dr. Leaf encourages people to be persistent and patient. “You have to take one thing at a time. Anyone who has ever achieved anything has never just done it instantly. Many people who are highly successful have failed many times first, but they never gave up. They found out what didn’t work, and they found what did. “It’s time to take responsibility and recognize that when we make a bad
choice, we are building something into our brain that is going to block our gift. We won’t think clearly, and we’re probably going to make more bad choices. Healed of Back Pain After 10 Years! Over 10 years ago, I fell and hurt my lower back. Doctors told me that I would have to wear a brace for the rest of my life. For years, I was unable to bend over completely and I suffered a Billie lot of pain, which medicine and exercise didn’t help. When I heard about the Richard Roberts Miracle Healing Services in Tulsa, my husband and I decided to go
to the July service to receive my healing. During the services, we planted a seed-faith gift as a point of contact. Then when Richard called out healing for back pain, I went up to have hands laid on me in prayer. I had been in a lot of pain during our drive to Tulsa. But after Richard prayed for me, not only was my pain gone, but I was able to bend over and touch my ankles. Today, I am still pain-free and able to bend. Praise the Lord! —Billie from Texas

God healed many people with back problems. This woman said, “My back felt so warm. Then it felt so good, because the pain went away.”
Some people in the audience said they suffered for a long time before receiving relief through the Healing Service—including this gentleman who had injured his knee years earlier, but who now shared, “The pain is gone!”
Many people stood to testify that they sensed an immediate improvement in their condition. Many with knee and back problems were especially touched. A large number of them demonstrated that they could move better by bending over, twisting, and walking freely up and down the auditorium’s aisles. One woman with a plate in her neck joyfully shared what God had done for her when Richard prayed for her. “I have a plate in my neck, fusions in my spine, and screws holding my pelvis
together,” she declared. “I have done everything possible to relieve the pain, but it just wasn’t happening. When you laid hands on me, my neck popped six times. That’s a miracle, because I’ve got that plate in there. I feel relief now. It’s so much better!” Another woman was amazed to find that her big toe was being restored after Richard prayed and laid hands on her for healing. “Oh, it bends,” she marveled joyfully as she explained how God had just touched her. “I haven’t

Partner Letter Leads to Healing I live in a nursing home. One day, I was unexpectedly called upon to preach to my fellow residents at the home. She was a pagan from the coasts of modern-day Lebanon. Jesus explained to her that she couldn’t request healing based on the covenant God had with Israel, because she didn’t belong to Israel. Yet the woman still refused to be turned away. “She had what I call bulldog faith,” Richard said. “When a bulldog gets its teeth in something, you can’t shake it loose. This woman wouldn’t let go! “In essence, she sa id to Jesus, ‘You’re right. I’m not Jewish. I don’t have a covenant right to healing. give me a crumb, I will loose my faith and believe God for a miracle.’ “Jesus exclaimed, ‘Woman, great is your faith. Let it be done to your daughter even as you believed.’ In other words,” Richard said, “she participated in her miracle. She released her faith to God for a miracle, and she received one! Her daughter was delivered in that very hour.” As Richard taught, he also gave words of knowledge as God led him, calling out healing to lungs… eye problems…neck pain…legs and knees…skin conditions…and other illnesses. As he prayed, he also encouraged people to lay hands on those around them who were in need of healing.
