Creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace is a goal most organisations today share, but, judging from the volume of current research, it’s not easy to achieve. While an increasing number of reports show that achieving workplace diversity is a good business decision, many organsations are struggling to achieve it, with McKinsey & Company reporting in Diversity Matters in 2015:

‘ Look, we’re different, with a different attitude, culture, way of behaving and way of doing things.’

‘ Greater diversity isn’t easy. Women account for an average of just 16% of the members of executive teams in the United States and 12% in the UK, and remain underrepresented at the top of corporations globally. The UK does comparatively better in racial diversity, albeit at a low level: some 78% of UK companies have senior leadership teams that fail to reflect the demographic composition of the country’s labour force and population, compared to 97% for the US.’

‘ We live in a deeply connected and global world. It should come as no surprise that more diverse companies and institutions are achieving better performance. Most organisations, including McKinsey, must do more to take full advantage of the opportunity that diverse leadership teams represent. That’s particularly true for their talent pipelines: attracting, developing, mentoring, sponsoring, and retaining the next generations of global leaders at all levels of organisations. Given the higher returns that diversity is expected to bring, we believe it is better to invest now, since winners will pull further ahead and laggards will fall further behind.’

Why Fielding? Fielding takes inspiration from, and is named after, the fielding positions on a cricket pitch. A collaborative team game, increasingly played by both male and females, cricket’s success is achieved through collective effort.

Fielding’s split top options also open up new and more energetic design options. When a table has two tops, why not take advantage of that and mix a cool veneer with a decorative pattern?

Fielding worktables can’t be compared to or benchmarked against traditional tables or desks. The table architecture and top shapes have been expressly designed to take them as far away from conventional desking as possible, in order to offer a richer, more amenable and more vibrant diversity of work settings.

Fielding worktables are a response to our increasing use of mobile technology technology that helps us to remain

The global coworking movement has pursued very different interiors, desk layouts and shape configurations to those of the traditional workplace. This reflects a simple goal, saying, ‘Look, we’re different, with a different attitude, culture, way of behaving and way of doing things.’ When you have CEOs of Fortune 500 companies declaring that their agenda is to instill a culture of a start-up into their organisation, it seems clear that these seemingly small design ideas can have a big impact.

productive when we’re working away from traditional workstations.

Fielding worktables are designed for McKinsey’s research sets out that more diverse companies do perform better, and the financial and analytical data is there to prove it. However, and perhaps more importantly, it also suggests that diversity brings multiple benefits within organisations, including:

Fielding is suggestive of a new generation networked organisation rather than a hierarchical one, and has a collaborative look and feel that’s more collegiate than administrative desking. Designed to break down the barriers of the hierarchical workplace, Fielding reflects the diversity of the workforce itself. Why not work in a workplace with as much personality and engagement as we share with the best of our colleagues?

Fielding worktables reflect that it’s

a team game,

not a game for individuals.

Winning the war for talent: women and ethnic minorities increase the sourcing talent pool and 40% of European companies say skill shortages are a major concern.

Women and ethnic minorities are key consumer decision makers: within the UK for example, women make 80% of consumer purchases.

Diversity increases employee satisfaction and reduces conflicts between groups, improving collaboration and loyalty.

Diversity fosters innovation and creativity through a greater variety of problem-solving approaches, perspectives and ideas.

Social responsibility is becoming both a cultural and political requirement and is a central tenet of Generation Y and Millennials’ decision making. An HBR paper published by David Rock and Heidi Grant in 2016 reports similar findings to McKinsey: ‘Diverse teams may also change the way that entire teams digest information needed to make the best decisions. In a nutshell, enriching your employee pool with representatives of different genders, races and nationalities is key for boosting your company’s joint intellectual potential. Creating a more diverse workplace will help to keep your team members’ biases in check and make them question their assumptions.

‘ At the same time, we need to make sure the organisation has inclusive practices so that everyone feels they can be heard. All of this can make your teams smarter and, ultimately, make your organisation more successful, whatever your goals.’

Fielding worktables are designed to

encourage organisations to work differently.

connecting people in a new way.

Why not offer a wide choice of finishes that allows designers to customise worktables and offer a new level of diversity and individuality? Research tells us that diversity over conformity is ‘grist to the mill’ of increased productivity and job satisfaction. An intriguingly titled HBR publication, Diverse Teams Feel Less Comfortable – and That’s Why They Perform Better, reported that we’re all prone to the power of the ‘fluency heuristic’. (In other words, we learn better in a hands-on way, preferring information that is processed more easily...) It seems, however, that, despite the evidence, ‘homogenous teams just feel more effective. In addition, people believe that diverse teams breed greater conflict than they actually do. Bringing these biases to light may enable ways to combat them.’ As the HBR article suggests, ‘If leaders can recognise that the debate and unfamiliarity that come with diversity are an important catalyst for creativity and deep thinking, they will invite it and celebrate it. And, very likely, the organisation – and everyone in it – will reap the rewards.’

That’s why the Fielding tables are purposely designed to look different: the very fact that they’re different will help instil a new mindset and a fresh way of thinking and of doing things.

Oracle’s What’s New for HR in 2017? (its annual forecast of what’s shaping up to become critical workplace issues) reports that: ‘For today’s employees, the feeling that they work in an inclusive and diverse workplace has become as important as their pay or benefits. This creates an important sense of kinship among colleagues.’

“The sense of community is palpable.”

Smartworking® – products designed for our increasingly collaborative and shared workspaces.

We’re not all tall; we come in a marvellous variety of shapes and sizes and find comfort in different set-ups, so why not design for everyone rather than to a median pulled upwards by the long-legged amongst us?

Both the Fielding worktable and the Fielding café table offer two work heights: 710 and 750 for the former, and 1050 and 1090 for the latter. This enables more people than ever before to work at a level that suits them. Fielding’s up-to-date anthropomorphic narrative, which is designed to make you a little more thoughtful in how you set yourself up at work, adds to and builds on Orangebox’s long-term, cumulative body of WWW research and consultancy.

‘The best seating position is the next one’ is an often-repeated mantra with a central truism: don’t spend too long in one default position – move around, and work in different ways.

The Orangebox anthropomorphic human scale encompasses body heights ranging from 4’6” to 6’4” for both men and women, so a default table height will inevitably force some users to work at a level they find uncomfortable. Central to an effective WWW programme is the ability to offer workplace choice, and a choice of worktop heights should be part of the mix.

The design ethos of Fielding tables is to make this visible; reminding us that good posture requires mindfulnes, and encouraging a new level of engagement.

If you aren’t comfortable working at one height, it’s no big deal – just move around the table.

Fielding is perfectly complemented by a new generation of ‘light touch’ task seating (easy-to-use chairs that do the adjusting for you) increasingly being adopted within our shared collaborative environments.

Knowing the demographic breakdown of the workforce, we can assert with reasonable accuracy that within the typical workplace the correct mix of worktop heights should be...

Popliteal Height 381mm – 505mm (15.0” – 19.9”)

A good seating position is one in which you feel comfortable, where your feet are flat on the floor and there’s no strain on your buttocks or on your arm or back muscles. This anthropomorphic data sets out the dimensional range, from male to female and small to large, and shows that it is perhaps rather wider than we might have expected.
