Inside the Creative Collaboration

Designer Rhonda Drakeford’s showroom transformation for Clerkenwell Design Week 2024

We spoke with Rhonda Drakeford, the founder and visionary behind Studio Rhonda to find out more about her transformation of our London showroom. Renowned for her expertise in graphic and interior design, Rhonda revitalised and infused our London showroom with vibrant colours and bold styles.

Describe your new design for the London showroom?

A sensory journey through colour, form and texture. It’s intentionally impactful and surprising, yet also relaxed and inviting.”

Tell us about your design process for the space?

It’s a layered approach. The first element I explore is the functionality of a space and observing how a building is used. One of my main aims was to declutter and strip it back to a neutral canvas to allow the product to be the focus.”

“ “

What about the chosen finishes?

Textile-wise, it’s been important to use fabrics with a natural character and patination to soften the brighter colours. I’ve also brought in a base-palette of natural, earthy tones, an intentional move away from greys. It’s resulted in a space that is surprisingly calming.”

What is your work influenced by?

I’m inspired by modern and brutalist architecture, and nature. They go hand-in-hand — I love the contrast of bold buildings overgrown with foliage. The Barbican is a great example of functional, bold and organic principles working together beautifully. ”

What would you recommend to those unsure of adding colour to their workspace?

Colour doesn’t have to be scary, or permanent. One key principle I use is layering of tonal colours, rather than everything being ‘matchy matchy’. I also offset bold colour with natural, earthy tones. It gives everything space to breathe.

It’s also important to create zones of calmness and areas that are more stimulating and joyful. Colour is a powerful tool for this.”

Is there a technique you always apply in interior spaces?

Always declutter! I love working with colour but in a very controlled way — I use it architecturally, creating journeys through a space. Layering within colour-blocking is a great way to add depth and interest whilst avoiding visual clutter.”

The centrally located spiral staircase was painted leafy green, creating a sculptural backbone and landmark within the showroom.

Rhonda naturally creates graphic and sculptural compositions in a space. She loves using a layered approach, carefully accenting with colour and form.

Beyond the Desk was where Rhonda was able to install a variety of seating configurations in a spectrum of immersive colours. Rhonda worked with a colour-blocked system, creating areas of calm tones contrasted with neighbouring bolder shades.
