T
he master bath is getting a makeover, as this space is becoming a crown jewel of the home. In this recent project on Newport Harbor, Frank Pitman, principal of Frank Pitman Designs, Inc. in Mission Viejo included many decadent details and automated features throughout. The design inspiration was an art deco, luxury stateroom or yacht, which carries through the exotic wood grain cabinetry, glamorous chandeliers and intricate marble work. “Because it’s a high-rise condo overlooking the harbor with a floor-to-ceiling view all the way around, the challenge was to create privacy while keeping it open,” explains Pitman. By inserting a window in the master shower with a two-way mirror, the homeowner can take in the ocean view in privacy. Panels of art glass doors slide closed along a barn door-style track to conceal the water closet. All of the custom cabinetry is automated and interior lit with features like warming towel drawers, a slide-out surface for linens and a vanity mirror with hidden makeup lighting. “Whenever you tap anything, it opens or closes, and comes alive,” says Pitman. “Everything is right there and at your fingertips.”

In the Laps of Luxury Take a visual dip in Orange County’s most luxurious pools. By Kim Haman
W
hen you imagine a high-end swimming pool, you may visualize a pool at an exclusive resort. The water is crystal clear, the tiles hand-selected and the surroundings lush and romantic with a grotto and waterfalls. In Orange County, luxury pools like these exist in our own backyards. Come on in, the water’s perfect.
1. SKY VIEW
Hidden within this 20,000-square-foot home perched high in the hills above Yorba Linda is an interior pool as unique as the home that envelops it. Imported glass lines its walls, making the water glow in a pale turquoise. Palm trees and statuary line its edge, but perhaps its most striking feature is the ceiling above it. Hand-painted, it shows wispy clouds that seem to move on their own across the sky. Continues on page 28.

2. OCEANS AWAY
4. MEDITERRANEAN BEAUTY
For those who love the water, this nature-inspired pool in Laguna Beach offers a soul-satisfying amount. The pool itself is rimmed with smooth rocks in lovely, muted shades of gray, lavender, tan and slate. Its organic shape mimics a natural body of water. And just beyond the pool is an expansive view of the Pacific Ocean that takes the eye to the edge of the horizon.
With azure waters, a rock water slide, numerous waterfalls, a mini island and a cave, this luxurious pool and outdoor space in San Juan Capistrano feels like a getaway destination. Lava rock fire urns surround and light up the entire poolside area and the custom covered cabana. The pool is the centerpiece of an entire backyard styled to resemble a resort on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea.
3. CUTTING EDGE
5. A PERSONAL PARADISE
Contemporary with clean lines, the pool’s infinity edge gives the illusion that the water continues beyond the hilltop view of Yorba Linda. With sleek outdoor furnishings, drought-friendly landscaping and the pool’s reflection of the sky above, the Zen-like atmosphere leaves one feeling relaxed and renewed.
Gracing the one-acre backyard of this Anaheim Hills home, this pool brings to mind a South Pacific paradise where troubles are forgotten and life is enjoyed to the fullest. The pool features a beach entry, multiple water falls, a grotto and a rock bridge. Birds of Paradise and other tropical plants border the edge, completing the tropical vibe.

1. Entertaining is easy with professional-grade appliances. Thermador’s 60-inch Pro Grand range features a 24-inch double griddle, soft-close doors and steam oven option. Available at Thermador, Irvine; Monark Appliances or Pirch, SoCo Collection; and Renwes Sales, Lake Forest.
3. Induction ranges with chef features are all the rage: The new Wolf induction cooktop boils water faster than gas and can simmer sauces and melt fine chocolate without scorching. The E series dual convection oven heats uniformly throughout. Sub-Zero/Wolf, available at Pirch or Monark Appliances, SoCo Collection.
2. “Trends for 2017 will be natural-looking finishes with added durability, such as textured wood laminates and engineered stone countertops, and hidden appliance storage behind cabinet fronts, or sliding or pocket doors. Appliance finishes will expand beyond stainless steel with choices in truffle brown, white glass, copper, black and red,” says Sydney Doulames, CKD, KE Design Studio, SoCo Collection.
4. While stainless steel has been an ongoing trend, people are starting to personalize their kitchen appliances with color accents. The new Jenn-Air Obsidian’s dark interior contrasts nicely with a kitchen color scheme, while adding an on-trend, masculine touch. Available at Renwes Sales, Lake Forest.

7 5. Materials that mimic the look of marble, like porcelain tiles, are popular because they’re versatile, and easy to install and maintain. “Porcelanosa’s vast range of tiles feature a low water absorption rate and are highly resistant to damage,” says Eloy Selles, general manager, Porcelanosa, Anaheim. “The Soul collection is available in seven shades, and is suitable for wall and floor applications, hightraffic areas, showers and outdoor surfaces.”
6. Brassy fixtures and bold patterns pack a lot of punch in a small space. In this powder room Strickler designed, a Martinique tropical banana leaf wallpaper pattern creates an outdoors-inside feel. The mirror and vanity are by Waterworks. “For 2017, we will be seeing a lot more brass fixtures and hardware, along with new quartzites that look like concrete,” says Robin Strickler of Design Works, Irvine.
7. “The era of boring powder rooms has come to an end! Change your powder room into a jewel box, a tiny space to impress and surprise your guests,” says ASID President Elect Nazgol Seyedi. One of Seyedi’s recent projects, this powder room features backlit quartzite from Trendy Surfaces and vanity top with a mix of flattering warm and cool light. Ombré walls by local artist A Brush With Life enlarge the space, while the Italian cut crystal sink by MaestroBath becomes the focal point of the space. Spring/Summer 2017 | Design OC | 47

fter working as a stylist in the fashion industry for several years, Shannon Wilkins made the jump into the decorating world and launched her boutique interior design company, PRAIRIE Interiors. In the city of Newport Beach, where she is also based, Wilkins took up the challenge of staging a 4,000-square-foot modern house built by Jade Homes for the real estate market—having only one week to complete it. Located on a hill in the Eastbluff neighborhood, the home, which features stone and concrete finishes, provides beautiful views of the Back Bay. “With the team, we pictured a well-traveled family with refined taste and a love for minimal architecture,” says Wilkins. “Despite the fact that Newport Beach is the suburbs, everyone who lives here pays attention to trends and follows what’s happening in terms of decoration all over the world. So you can really push the design as if you were in Los Angeles or New York.”
OPPOSITE PAGE: Brightly patterned pillows add personality to an outdoor gathering spot. ABOVE: Low-maintenance landscaping is the perfect match for this home’s laidback vibe. With its clean lines and bohemian touches, this home was filled with natural accessories, such as the bleached jute rug and the shearling throw, to warm up the space. “The modern architecture from the 1960s and 1970s inspires me a lot,” she says. “This style lends itself so well to California.” Many of the furniture pieces range from midcentury modern to contemporary finds, and were sourced from local shops. Vibrant artwork and custom-framed photographs were added to complete the look, making the home feel cozy and ready to move into. “I always strive to create environments that highlight the architectural features with an ambiance that is fresh, timeless and translates into a broader appeal,” Wilkins says.

hile most homes aspire to maximize space, many come up short when fitting in function and aesthetics. Simplicity is the key to making it all work and this San Clemente home manages to pull off all of the above, even within a tight footprint. A two-story home designed for a family, its minimalist design by Anders Lasater, president of Anders Lasater Architects in Laguna Beach, is enhanced by natural light and space-saving solutions that make the home feel open, airy and connected to the outside. On the first floor is the main entry, as well as the two girls’ bedrooms and a mother-in-law suite. The upper floor contains the master bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining area for one-level living and a nearly 180-degree view of the city lights and ocean. In the master bedroom, two large sliding glass panels disappear into a wall pocket so the living spaces and master bedroom suddenly become one. “Opening up the house, while borrowing views and space from the adjacent rooms was the overarching idea, giving them everything they need in one New York loft-style concept,” says Lasater.
“It’s meant to be a fun, convenient California lifestyle kind of a home.”
68 | Design OC | Spring/Summer 2017
Bringing in plenty of natural light was vital to making it feel as spacious as possible. “The more light, the more you can perceive the space,” says Lasater. To achieve this, he came up with a unique double-roof system with a lower “eyebrow” roof above a ribbon of clerestory windows and an upper reflective roof. “We’re able to pull a lot of light in without direct heat from the sun, which is a challenge in southern California. This illuminates the house during the day without turning on any lights at all.” The home’s clean look also extends to natural and no-fuss finishes, such as polished concrete used for the floors. When the concrete was poured and acid washed for the front exterior, it transitioned to a beach sand color, which was a serendipitous surprise. “We kept the materials simple, honest and carefree so you can have beach sandy feet and not feel like you’re going to ruin your house,” says Lasater. “It’s meant to be a fun, convenient California lifestyle kind of a home.” OPPOSITE PAGE TOP: The home’s double roof allows light in without direct heat. LEFT: Outside, drought-tolerant plants complement the contemporary exterior. ABOVE: Glass sliding doors open up the master bedroom to the rest of the living space. right and breezy, the quintessential beach home feels refreshing and relaxing in its natural surroundings. Take a peek inside this Cape Cod-style Corona del Mar home, just steps away from the beach, and you’ll find it strikes the right balance of casual and chic. A vacation home for a family from Texas, the space was designed by Newport-based designer Barclay Butera as the perfect place for the family to unwind after spending their days on the coast. Here, Butera shares his secrets for creating a casual chic beach home with personal flair.
72 | Design OC | Spring/Summer 2017
1
Choose Classic Hues
A color palette that’s inspired by seaside tones is always in style for coastal homes. For accents, classic colors work best. “You can’t go wrong with a fresh mix of various blues and whites,” says Butera. “I love to combine this with dark rich woods, metals and lacquer— the works. The dark wood keeps it from getting too fussy, while the clean slate is soothing and reminiscent of the beach.”
2
Mix and Match Put a personal spin on your beachy decor by mixing in various styles for a well-styled look. For this beach home project, Butera sourced most of the furnishings and accessories from his Newport Beach Barclay Butera Home showroom. “We mixed it up with a bit of vintage and custom—the art, lighting and rugs,” says Butera. “It’s a curated mix of classic plantation and a crisp, sophisticated beach style.”
Decorate in Layers
3
Layers of textures and finishes compose a beach style all your own. “Toss in sisal rugs, soft stripes and mercury glass home décor... Always mix patterns and textures for a rich, layered look,” says Butera.
4
Keep It Casual Bleached white walls and accessories contrast with dark wood floors and plantation and antique-style furnishings for an approachable, casual chic style. “While the furniture is elegant and glamorous, it’s very comfortable and livable. No one is afraid to put their feet up on the ottoman,” says Butera.
Highlight the View
5
Crisp white walls reflect sunlight, while high windows with paneled curtains frame the ocean views. “It’s a very sophisticated beach home with spectacular unobstructed views of the ocean,” says Butera. Spring/Summer 2017 | Design OC | 73

LIVING | OUTDOOR GATHERING SPACES
Living on the Edge An outdoor living room expands your entertaining possibilities. By Margie Monin Dombrowski Photography by Coy Gutierrez
78 | Design OC | Spring/Summer 2017
T
he backyard is moving to the forefront of design, as living spaces are no longer confined to a home’s four walls. With year-round sunny weather, Orange County outdoor spaces have a lot to live up to. When Peggy Dupuis, interior architect and owner of Dupuis Design in San Clemente, was hired to redesign this San Clemente rooftop terrace, her clients wanted it to function as a true outdoor living room, where they could entertain their friends and family. “The balcony was empty [except] for their barbecue grill—and they had no idea how to use the space or make it enticing,” Dupuis says. “All we needed was a proper layout, lighting, and to make it fun and functional.” Bringing in a few furnishings instantly revamped the space: a sleek fire pit table, RGB LED-lighted planters, cube stools, aluminum planters (which she had painted in red, one of the client’s favorite colors), contemporary barstools and comfortable outdoor sofas.
Taking color cues from the natural surroundings, Dupuis chose accents in red to juxtapose the skyline and ocean view. “It’s always amazing to use red as a contrast for the outdoor landscape. [It’s] warm and inspirational.” By balancing the natural elements with casual furnishings and cheerful, colorful accents, Dupuis created a stylish and inviting outdoor living room her clients can enjoy every season and occasion. “It’s a very simple recipe: Combine the elements of nature (fire, water, air, light) with cozy furniture, and eyecatching decor and colors.”
PICTURED: The spatial layout for this rooftop terrace allows for guests to flow from one seating area to another, or sit at the bar with an unobstructed ocean view. Red barstools, custom-painted planters and throw pillows create a fun contrast to the neutral lounge sofas and turquoise waves in the background. Spring/Summer 2017 | Design OC | 79

“
A dramatic setting to engage with family and friends, the dining room flows seamlessly into the adjacent covered outdoor space as sliding walls of glass recess completely into pockets. Slatted, wood screens provide privacy, while also orchestrating light. A reflecting pond wraps around the edge of this space, reinforcing a sense of place; a structure positioned at the edge where land meets the sea. The subtle variations of color and pattern of the sky are reflected in the water, leading to an evolving spatial experience.” —Horst Noppenberger, Horst Architects
