HUNTINGTON BEACH SURF CITY

WELCOME Huntington Beach—“Surf City USA”—has a vibrant energy like few classic surf towns around the world. Surfing dominates everyday life here and it gives the community a color and style that make it someplace special. I left Australia in 1978 to make Huntington Beach my home. The deep golden sunsets over the water, perfect waves, and friendly locals are part of the city’s magic spell. It doesn’t matter if you’re a world champion surfer or just like to gaze at the ocean with your toes in the sand, this city has it all. Today, HB is the showcase of the surf industry and Main Street is the Times Square of the surf world. The Surfi ng Walk of Fame, Surfers’ Hall of Fame and the International Surfi ng Museum make Huntington Beach the center of global surf culture. I can’t imagine living anywhere else! PETER “PT” TOWNEND 1976 men’s surfi ng world champ, former U.S. team coach, pioneer, Surfi ng Walk of Fame Chairman, surf industry businessman and Huntington Beach resident.

PT COLLECTION

to Surf City USA

In 1963, I co-authored the song “Surf City” with my partner Jan Berry, along with Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. I was inspired by Huntington Beach and all it had to offer, and listeners were thrilled by the images of our great beach lifestyle. It was the fi rst surf song to hit No. 1 on the charts, and it became a classic anthem to millions who were looking for fun in the California sun. Walk the 10 miles of sand populated by sunbathing beauties, take a leisurely ride on a beach cruiser, go fishing off the pier – Huntington Beach is sure to inspire. So welcome to Surf City; you have found The Endless Summer! DEAN TORRENCE Co-founder of the rock duo Jan and Dean, rock and roll pioneer, artist, photographer, businessman and longtime Huntington Beach resident.

Must-Dos

ROBERT STERN

LUCIA GRIGGI

Stay for a day, a weekend or a week and Huntington Beach offers plenty to explore and enjoy. Ten miles of warm sunny beaches, palm trees swaying in the breeze and days full of sunshine can be the inspiration for your beach adventure.

A ONE-DAY VISIT:

A WEEKEND VISIT:

Start with a walk to the end of the pier. After a few minutes soaking up the view and fresh ocean air, enjoy a burger and milkshake at Ruby’s Surf City Diner as you gaze out at the Pacific. Wander down Main Street and step into the footprints of famous surfers at the Surfers’ Hall of Fame or make an etching of your favorite surf star on the Surfing Walk of Fame. Walk down the street to the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum and check out the “Century of Stoke” exhibition on the 100 years of surfing in Huntington Beach. Top off the night as the ocean breeze settles with dinner at one of the many Main Street restaurants.

If you can stay more than a day, check in to one of our many hotels and awake to the sound of the Pacific Ocean before you get breakfast at a place beloved by locals and surfers: The Sugar Shack. Then spend a morning or an afternoon at one of Surf City USA’s five beaches and take a long walk along the water’s edge. While you’re here, be sure to watch the sunset from the sand while you make s’mores over a beach bonfire. And it won’t take long to find out that a great lunch at one of downtown’s many restaurants and cafes is matched only by dinner and drinks. Finally, if you spend a day exploring the neighborhoods of Sunset Beach and Huntington Harbour, you can complete the trip with a romantic gondola ride through the Harbour canals with Sunset Gondola.

A WEEK’S VISIT: Staying for the week? Rent a bike and go for a ride along the Beach. Buy fresh local produce straight from the source at the farmer’s market at Surf City Nights, HB’s weekly Tuesday night street fair on Main Street. Bring your camera for a quiet morning with the birds at Bolsa Chica Wetlands, then get surf or standup paddle lessons. Of course, if you’re more of a skateboarder, head over to the new Van’s Off The Wall Skatepark, one of the most cutting-edge skateparks in the U.S. sample some traditional German treats or a beer at Old World Village, then cheer along at their popular dachshund races or pack a picnic and walk around lush Central Park. If you’ve got the time, make Huntington Beach your basecamp and head south to Newport Landing Whale Watching, or go sightseeing in Los Angeles with Surf City Adventure Tours.

Surf Speak

SURFING HAS A LARGE AND COLORFUL VERNACULAR THAT IS ALWAYS EXPANDING AND CHANGING. BUT IF YOU PLAN TO LEARN HOW TO SURF WHILE YOU’RE IN HUNTINGTON BEACH OR JUST WANT TO FIT IN WITH THE SURFERS, HERE ARE THE FIRST FEW WORDS YOU NEED TO KNOW.

AIR: When a surfer and board launch off the lip of a wave and become airborne. BARREL: As a wave breaks, it folds over itself, making a barrel or tube shape in the middle. When conditions are right, a surfer can ride in that barrel.

1 2 • H U N T I N G TO N B E AC H 2 0 1 4 / 1 5

BOTTOM TURN: Right after catching a wave, a surfer will turn the board hard at the wave’s base to generate power to carve the face of the wave. CARVE: Move along the face of a wave.

CAUGHT INSIDE: When a surfer is stuck between the shoreline and breaking waves. DROP IN: A cardinal surfing sin, when a surfer who doesn’t have the right of way catches a wave that another surfer is riding. Often done by kooks.

JASON BOGS

D JORVVDU\ RI VXU¿QJ WHUPV

DUCK DIVE: When a surfer pushes their board under the water to avoid a breaking wave. FACE: The part of the wave that a surfer rides. FIN: A fin-shaped piece on the bottom of a surfboard that helps steer it. GOOFY FOOT: A surfer who rides with the right foot in front. GROM: A young (usually teen) surfer. KOOK: A person in the lineup who is uncool, disruptive or dangerous because they don’t know how to surf or don’t follow basic surfing etiquette.

LEASH: A plastic cord that keeps a surfer connected to his board and keeps the board from floating out of control through the surf zone. LIP: The breaking edge of the wave. LINEUP: Spot where surfers wait just beyond where waves break. LONGBOARD: A larger type of surfboard at least 9 feet long with more rounded edges than a shortboard. NOSE RIDE: When a longboarder rides the front end of a longboard. REGULAR (OR NORMAL) FOOT: A surfer who rides with the left foot in front. SHORTBOARD: A shorter, lighter board with a pointed nose. SPONGER: A derogatory word for a person riding a bodyboard. SWELL: A few hours to a few days worth of waves generated by a storm. WAHINE: A female surfer.

HB ON THE WING Connecting to nature is easy at eight of the city’s remarkable and unique habitats.

Wings flutter and flap at the beach too. On their way from places where it’s too cold or too hot for the season, birds from around the Western Hemisphere stop by Huntington Beach for a rest. AN ICON OVER THE SEA The single most iconic symbol of Huntington Beach is the Huntington Beach Pier. That’s because the pier and the city came into existence together in 1904. The backdrop to a century of historic surfing, from pioneers like George Freeth and Duke Kahanamoku to modern world champs Kelly Slater and Stephanie Gilmore. After storms nearly destroyed it in the 1980s, the pier was rebuilt and reopened in 1992. It now stretches 1,850 feet into the Pacific, making it one of the longest on the West Coast. Visitors can catch halibut and sea bass without a license and can rent a rod and reel from Let’s Go Fishing, the pier’s bait-and-tackle shop. A variety of colorful kites are available from Kite Connection. And you can’t eat a burger any closer to the water than at Ruby’s Surf City Diner on the end of the pier.

STOKING THE BEACH FIRE There are over 500 concrete fire rings stretched along Huntington Beach’s 10 miles of sand, making Surf City USA one of the last places on the California coast where you can still build a beach bonfire. They are beautiful, relaxing, great for a beach barbeque and perfect for staying warm as the cool ocean air settles during a perfect Southern California sunset. And a bonfire in Huntington Beach isn’t complete without a gooey s’more—a combination of roasted marshmallows, graham crackers and Hershey’s chocolate. Bonfire rings are free and available on a first come, first served basis. So if you’re planning a beach bonfire night, choose your spot early and bring your gear out to claim it. Or if you’d rather kick back and let someone else do the work, beach butler services are available through the beachfront concessionaires. This service reserves a bonfire ring for you and the beach butler will keep the fire going, and supply you with waters, hot chocolate, s’mores fixin’s, chairs and blankets.

BEACH LIFE

THE BEACHES OF SURF CITY USA Sea and sand stretch for 10 miles along Huntington Beach, where you can surf, swim, bike, play beach volleyball, fish, fly a kite, walk, run, picnic, watch a sunset, or just stretch out on the beach and do nothing at all. The endless summer starts right here. There’s not just one beach along the Surf City USA coastline, but five. All the beaches boast clean, wide sands, and have their own special character. BOLSA CHICA STATE BEACH: Small waves and shallow waters make this a great swimming area. The 3-mile-long Bolsa Chica State Beach is also an excellent spot for beginning surfers and surf schools. Pacific Coast Highway at Warner Ave. HUNTINGTON CITY BEACH: The landmark Huntington Beach Pier runs right down the middle of this beach and leads you right into downtown. This beach is the focal point of local life and hosts many events. A steady flow of good waves make it the home of the world’s biggest surf contest every summer, the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing, along with countless other surfing

2 2 • H U N T I N G TO N B E AC H 2 0 1 4 / 1 5

competitions. Plus, it’s a good swimming spot for families because of relatively calm waters. Pacific Coast Highway at Main Street. HUNTINGTON STATE BEACH: This beach is popular for swimming in the summer months because surfing is only allowed in certain areas, leaving much of the ocean open for bodysurfers and bodyboarders as well as swimmers. It’s also the certified training center for California State Lifeguards and a favorite place for surf fishermen too. Pacific Coast Highway at Beach Boulevard. SUNSET BEACH: The city’s most northern beach is

also the smallest at 1.5 miles long. Sunset Beach offers a classic strip of sand as well as a park with a playground just off the beach. Pacific Coast Highway between Anderson Street and Warner Ave. DOG BEACH: It’s tough for dog owners to find a beach anywhere on the coast where you and your best friend can play off-leash in the waves. With a mile and a half of sandy paradise, Surf City USA’s Dog Beach is a much cherished locale by dogs and their families. Dog Beach is also a hot spot for surfing and paddle boarding. Pacific Coast Highway at Golden West.

NIGHTLIFE The cool ocean breeze keeps flowing along with the good times after the sun goes down. Just pick the place that suits your style – beer, cocktails or wine, quiet or high energy, sports or live music –and raise a glass. Main Street Wine Company are specialists in California boutique wines. Discover new varietals in a modern, relaxed setting or enjoy a craft beer on the patio. At SeaLegs Wine Bar, find the perfect match for California-style tapas and cheeses with a glass or two from a vast selection of wines and beers. Gallagher’s Pub & Grill features live Irish music and comedy nights. Craft whiskeys and cocktails named after icons like Joe Strummer and Iggy Pop make Johnny’s Saloon one of the county’s best punk-rock bars. O’Connell’s Sports Pub & Grille can boast a reputation as one of the best local sports bars for a fan-friendly game-day experience, with cold and affordable beer, and cocktails that are always at the ready. Huntington Beach Beer Company & Restaurant brews an outstanding pale ale, and its patio is the ideal place to drink on warm nights. House of Brews is Huntington Harbour’s wellnamed sports bar with 11 craft beers

on tap and a selection of bottled beers from around the world. Or, if you’re up to the challenge, brew and bottle your own libation at Brewbakers. Put on your favorite Hawaiian shirt and drop in to Don the Beachcomber’s for old school tiki rum-based tropical drinks or some of the world’s best rums straight up, paired with live surf music. Ireland goes to the beach at Nadine’s Irish Mist, serving up a mix of classic pub food and live music. Things are more refined at Huntington Beach’s resorts, where you can pass the evening sipping cocktails in the lounge at Zimzala Restaurant and Bar in the Shorebreak, a Joie de Vivre Hotel. Relax by the pool or sit back in The Red Chair Lounge’s ocean-view patio in the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa. Watch the sun go down with a signature cocktail like the H.B. Margarita, featuring Tanteo jalapeño tequila. Thursday wine-tasting events and live music kick the weekends off right at Shades PM in the Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel, and the music keeps playing through Saturday night.

Finally, check out WATERTABLE, the new restaurant and gastro bar at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach, where stunning views are matched with innovative cuisine and artisanal cocktails.

OF SURF CITY USA

IN 2014, HUNTINGTON BEACH CELEBRATES THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF LOCAL SURFING WITH EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE YEAR (SEE PAGE 67). HERE’S HOW HUNTINGTON BEACH BECAME SURF CITY USA.

GEORGE FREETH, A QUIET LIFEGUARD FROM HAWAII

arrived on the sands of Huntington Beach on June 20, 1914. It was just weeks before the start of World War I and this sleepy seaside town was celebrating the opening of the new concrete pier. Freeth carried his heavy 8-foot surfboard made of redwood into the water and did things people

4 2 • H U N T I N G TO N B E AC H 2 0 1 4 / 1 5

had never seen before. He rode the waves. This stunt got a small mention in the next day’s paper, but left an indelible mark on the city of Huntington Beach. Schoolboys whom Freeth had taught to surf kept the sport alive by building their own boards and teaching others to surf. Another Hawaiian, and the man considered the father of modern surfing, Duke

Kahanamoku, gave surfing momentum when he came for a visit a few years later. Even in the early 1930s, groups of surfers could often be seen out in the waters off the Huntington Beach Pier. By the 1960s, surfers crowded the water by the hundreds. In the 1950s, the surf industry was born with the making of the first mass-produced foam and fiberglass surfboards down the road in nearby

Laguna Beach, as well as the opening of surf shops around all of Southern California. Local surfer Gordie Duane opened his first surf shop in 1956 at the foot of the pier. Later, Duane opened a full shop down the street and remained one of the steadiest surf stores for decades until the shop closed in 1988. The West Coast Surfing Championships began in the summer of 1959, sponsored by the city, and unquestionably featured the best West Coast board riders and the biggest crowds. The contest grew each year until surfers from across the country began entering the event and in 1964, the name was changed to the United States Surfing Championships. Crowds at the event

this format continued to grow in popularity for future events . Ten years earlier, the song “Surf City” by the surf music group Jan and Dean topped the U.S. pop charts. Lyrics of surfing, girls and cars ignited something in the American imagination. Songwriters Brian Wilson (of the Beach Boys) and Jan and Dean were careful not to name a specific town in the song, but the Southern California surf community quickly attached it to Huntington Beach, and it stuck. However, the Beach Boys name dropped HB specifically in their first big hit, “Surfin’ Safari” and fellow surf music star Dick Dale regularly played in town over the 1960s and 1970s, preferring to keep near the waves he rode.

continued to grow and averaged over 10,000 people every year. The spectators were vocal about what they wanted to see. Any surfer who took on the dangerous maneuver of riding between the pylons of the pier – known as “shooting” the pier – got the biggest cheers. Shooting the pier remains one of the most crowd pleasing tricks at pier surf contests to this day. Local knowledge of surfing the south side of the pier paid off as famous surfers Jack Haley, Mike Haley, Corky Carroll and David Nuuhiwa all picked up victories over the 1960s and early 1970s. Carroll won lots of contests, but Nuuhiwa’s easy, flowing style would make him one of the biggest, most influential stars of the era. In 1973, the US Surfing Championships moved out of Huntington Beach, but the blueprint for big-time surf contests and what was later referred to as “stadium surfing” had been established and

sponsors. Organized and sponsored by Huntington’s Kanvas by Katin, it was a six-day event with a $10,000 prize. It further set the stage for larger things to come in the city and all of Orange County. Bud Llamas became a local sensation just as amateur surfing got off the ground in the U.S. Coaches Chuck Allen, John Rothrock, and Tom Gibbons formed the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) in Huntington Beach in 1978, with Llamas winning its inaugural title. It elevated the training received by young surfers like Llamas, who

went on to a brief pro career in the 1980s, especially when top former pro surfers from Australia, Ian Cairns and Peter Townend took over as executive directors. Together they helped produce several of the most successful American surfers of the last 30 years, including Huntington Beach’s Lisa Andersen. Also, under the NSSA format, Huntington Beach High School has become the most successful high school program in the country with 17 team titles. Cairns and Townend saw business opportunities in Orange County, so they moved

to Huntington Beach, took over the NSSA and soon after, Cairns founded the Association of Surfi ng Professionals (ASP) in the city. A few years later, Townend created Surfi ng America, the current national amateur governing body, and Cairns founded the OP Pro and U.S. Open of Surfi ng, events ideally suited to utilize the size, space, and reliable surf at the Huntington Beach Pier. Both Townend and Cairns have also coached U.S. surf teams to multiple-medal finishes at the World Surfing Games; Cairns led the U.S. to gold in 2009.

THE CORNERS OF MAIN STREET in Downtown Huntington Beach feature the Surfing Walk of Fame, modeled after Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. The Walk includes stone plaques of the surfing world’s biggest names from musicians and surf ambassadors to the athletes themselves. Across the street is the Surfers’ Hall of Fame that has memorialized the cement hand and foot prints of the greatest surfers much like movie stars in front of TCL Chinese Theater. The focal point, standing directly in the center,

is a statue of Duke Kahanamoku, the godfather of modern surfing. The International Surfing Museum, founded by local realtor Natalie Kotsch, is just around the block and full of archival photos and film, surfboards and various artifacts of Surf City USA’s amazing history. The world’s largest and most media-friendly surf event, the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing is often called the “Superbowl of Surf.” The tradition of major contests continues at the Huntington Beach Pier and stretches back more than 50 summers, bringing together more than 500 surfers from 11 countries each year. Several world champions, including Kelly Slater, have won the event. In 2009, Courtney Conlogue and Brett Simpson became the first two Huntington Beach locals to sweep the women’s and men’s titles at the same time. Huntington Beach surfing history is still being made every day. Explore the beach, pier, and Downtown, and it will be easy to see why it is known worldwide as Surf City USA.

LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

LISA ANDERSEN ARRIVED IN SURF CITY USA as a 16-year-old runaway from Florida. It was here that she put her young life back together, partly under the guidance of Cairns and involvement in NSSA contests. She won four surfing world titles in the ’90s, and eventually settled in Huntington Beach as global brand ambassador for Roxy, the Huntington-based Quiksilver women’s brand. She remains an inspiration to female surfers—recreational and professional—around the world.

DOWNTOWN DINING A perfectly prepared steak comes via a 1,600-degree broiler at the Spark Woodfire Grill, where it’s yours to savor while gazing off the balcony at breathtaking views of the ocean and pier. G’s Boat House Raw Bar & Grill is a must for seafood lovers with a menu that includes peel-and-eat shrimp, chowders, and mahi mahi tacos. Endless toppings and sauces will raise your burger to a whole new level at 25 Degrees – and don’t miss their “adult” milkshakes, made with rum and Guinness. Fred’s Mexican Café is well-known for its unbelievable ocean views, but also for its calamari or Cajun shrimp tacos, and burritos so large they weigh more than a pound. With a distinctly Baja vibe and authentic menu items, Avila’s El Ranchito Mexican Restaurant has earned a faithful following, as well as Pete’s Mexican Cafe and Dos Toros Mexican Grill. Aloha Grill offers a great view over Main Street and the beach as well as a South Pacific Rim menu. Five different flavors of ahi tuna poke bowls are served up for

a tasty tour of Hawaii at North Shore Poke Company. Or if you only want breakfast on the islands, No Ka Oi serves up macadamia nut pancakes, French toast made with sweet bread, and loco moco. Huntington Beach is home to a lot of sushi lovers, and the massive selection of rolls at Sushi On Fire is such a people pleaser, reservations are recommended. So if you can’t wait, the same owners will serve you at Shabu on Fire next door. RA Sushi Bar’s rolls, signature cocktails, and vibrant atmosphere have created admirers all their own. Bruxie has attracted attention with gourmet waffle sandwiches, while newcomer Ritter’s Steam Kettle Cooking is making a splash with a Cajun Creole style oyster bar. Surfers have discovered Sancho’s Tacos, especially the breakfast burrito. A few slices from Pizza Lounge are perfect before a handmade dessert or pastry from Baguetier or Funnel House or try Mangiamo Gelato Caffe’s fresh, cold gelato in unique flavors.

THE SUGAR SHACK

SURF CITY CLASSICS Along Main Street, The Sugar Shack is an iconic little eatery that opened in 1967 and is beloved for its breakfast burritos, pancakes, cinnamon rolls, and at lunchtime for its burgers. The popular Keppler’s Special (which includes eggs, avocado, and hollandaise sauce) earned kudos in Saveur magazine. This is a must-eat spot for local surfers before or after they hit the waves. The Longboard Restaurant and Pub is a great spot to experience the local vibe. In a building dating back to 1904, The Longboard offers everything from pulled pork sandwiches to Maine lobster. Since 1965, the classic Captain Jack’s Prime Rib & Seafood Restaurant is famous for its Alaska king crab legs. Zubies Dry Dock, also opened in the ‘60s, features giant aquariums, an oyster bar, and good old fish and chips, making seafood tasty for any appetite. Duke’s Huntington Beach is one of HB’s most popular restaurants with their wide Pacific Ocean view and Hawaiian-inspired décor and cuisine. Nobody can beat the ocean view of Ruby’s Surf City Diner, situated on the end of the Huntington Beach Pier. Surfers and locals alike have always loved TK Burgers for their charbroiled burgers on plush egg buns and perfect location, just across the street from the beach.

desert from Casey’s Cupcakes or Paradis Ice Cream. Speaking of variety, around town there’s also burgers for serious burger connoisseurs at Slater’s 50/50, old school, family-run Mexican food at Don Ramon’s, and a great selection of affordable seafood at Market Broiler. Hawaiian bread French toast is a favorite at Bread Crumb Ohana Café, get the popular Dutch Baby at Original Pancake House or a bakers’ dozen at The Donuttery.

FOODIE FINDS Slapfish is often considered the best seafood restaurant in the county by Yelp reviewers, while SLOW Fish lives up to its name, stressing careful preparations of highend, but sustainable ingredients. Foodies love the place for the Fat Avo (an avocado filled with seared, seasoned albacore), marinated tender rib, and black rice sushi. Café Cup’s breakfast line-up includes chicken chile verde omelettes, cinnamon roll pancakes, and pesto bagels, making it a Yelp favorite. The Seafood Zone’s mingling of Latin American fusion with traditional Mexican items has earned raves for its shrimp tacos and ceviche. Classy yet casual, The Corner, with its baconwrapped dates stuffed with blue cheese, gnocchi mac and cheese or the red wine braised brisket, is a modern American comfort food paradise. Mitasie 3’s vegan and vegetarian Vietnamese dishes keep the regulars happy with the soy barbecue pork rolls. The lamb shank and chicken koobideh make Green Rice Kabob one of Orange County’s best Persian restaurants.

From the popular US Open of Surfing at the beach to the BB Jazz Festival in Huntington Central Park, these events are family-friendly affairs where everyone is welcome to attend. Surfing fans flock to the US Open of Surfing each summer, but Surf City USA hosts over 50 surfing competitions each year. On any given weekend, you'll find pop-up tents along the shoreline, a sure sign of a local surfing competition. Each summer, the International

BB Jazz also holds quarterly jazz concerts at the Huntington Central Library Theater, along with their popular BB Jazz Festival in Central Park each September and a New Year's Eve Celebration at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa. LAST LOOK

A late spring day provides a bit of temptation for surfers and beach lovers. The marine layer of coastal low clouds keeps the beach hidden in the morning fog. Surfers sneak out for a few waves before work. As the clouds burn off, the beach volleyball courts come alive with players digging, setting and spiking. Another beautiful beach day unfurls.
