1982.
Ah, the 80s! Back then everything seemed so new. Big color TVs, giant shoe-sized cell phones, Ronald Reagan was President and Pac-Man and Space Invaders ruled the video game market ... then MTV was launched and teen angst had reached a whole new level and the bad boys from Bad Religion had no problem using it to their advantage, brick by brick. In heaven there’s a stretch of Country called the Seven Mile Miracle. We call it the North Shore of Oahu. The North Shore offers a wide variety of surfing spots, from slow rollers to steam rollers and every other type of ‘bowler’ in between. Some of the waves like Banzai Pipeline shown here are among the most lethal in the world serving up no less than a thousand ways to die. Just ask Volcom Pipe Pro finalist Maikai McNamara, who came up smiling (and relieved) after this human pile driver. Mad respect for both.

#PASTPRESENTFUTURE
It’s that time of year when the days get longer and everything you love about Spring and Summer comes full circle. That’s a great way to describe the near future ... one blended with bits and pieces of our rickety past. Skaters, for example, might be just as stoked skating a delapidated wood ramp as they would be bustin’ 1080s on a Mega Ramp. Maybe’s it a vintage thing or something but whatever the case a respect for the past only fuels our future. Milton Martinez, wood for days. Jail Babes of the OC We can only imagine how much of a bummer the booking process must be. For anyone! It’s a tough time we’re sure and proves to us all that making the right choices in life matters. Sure there are cases of “mistaken identity” or “being in the wrong place at the wrong time” or “I didn’t know that was in my purse” but whatever the case, or pending case in this matter, it’s never any good.
HANK F O T O
In Loving Memory of Brock Little 1967 - 2016
We lost legendary surfer Brock Little to cancer in February. The last six months were the ride of his life but one he was unable to pull out of. His death reminds me of how special Brock was and how lucky I was to know him personally. He once took me on the ride of my life. It was around 4:30 PM Tahitian time on the point at Chopes after he water patrolled the Gotcha Pro Tahiti all day. During this trip I was on the back of his ski while we checked out a reef pass a few miles away. No lifevests or anything. No rescue raft dragging off the back like they have nowdays. Just the ski, me and Brock at

the wheel. It was about 6-8 feet and pounding on this outside reef when we pulled up Hank Foto was on another ski shooting photos of surfers getting some epic waves at sundown! And so the sun set and then Brock’s ski stalled on the inside after he tried to spray Hank’s ski and we sort of bogged out in the soup and yes - there was set coming right for us. We’re a mile offshore. It’s getting dark and Brock said we had to bail the ski that we were totally f#%ked - excuse my French - and I just about died. I had never been so scared. You look into the beach from that far out and it’s pitch black!!! Hank was nowhere to be seen and we were about to get mowed over by a wall of water ... five seconds until the wave hits Brock smiles, says he’s just f#%king with me and starts up the ski. We head out, get a little hammered by the white water, but Brock pulled us through out into the Lagoon ... and was laughing his ass off. I was in shock. I never got to repay him for that. Rest in Peace, Brock Little. -- Skip Snead
This month we’re hanging with Mark, 45, in Costa Mesa from somewhere up north. It was pretty hot and sunny out so we gave him some food and supplies. He was about as stoked as anyone! Let’s catch up... OCC: How’s it going brother? All good? Mark: I’m doing good, yeah! How about a banana and some water? Right on, dude, thanks! Pretty hot day, how you keepin’ cool? Yeah you know, I want to go down to the beach and jump in the ocean. I want to learn how to surf, but don’t want to go to one of those all-day kid’s surfing schools and pay a million dollars in these hard times. Just gotta give surfing the ol’ college try. You know I’ve got plenty of time but can’t find anyone at the beach who can take me out and teach me. I know who can teach you. Go down to Blackies and ask for the Crab. He’ll totally take you surfing. OK, I’m gonna walk down there now and hit him up. Alright, brother, well here’s a couple bucks for some food, take care and be safe. I will. Thanks brother! God bless.

harbor a variety of beneficial properties believed to promote your life’s health and help reduce the burden of chronic disease. Flavonoids are found in citrus fruits, peppers, onions, apples, grapes, tea, cocoa, deeply colored red-tan and blue-purpleblack varieties of fruits and vegetables. To cut to the chase, researchers found an inverse relationship with dietary intake of some flavonoid subclasses and weight change over time. The magnitude of weight change was modest and accounted for ~0.16 - 0.23 pounds less weight gained over four year intervals. In other words, increased consumption of most flavonoid subclasses was associated with less weight gain.
The recent news was generated from the results of a large observational study by Bertoia et al, which looked at flavonoid intake and weight maintenance in 124,086 men and women for 2024 years. To review, flavonoids are a naturally occurring

Local Orange County angler Kory Allen talks about the Lightning Trout he caught in the nearby Santa Ana River Lakes. “I was driving around the lake,” recalls Kory, “and I decided to stop at the bubble hole and that’s when I saw the giant lightning trout. We jigged for about 20 minutes then the big lightning trout decided to eat the white Power Worm I was dropshotting. It put up a good fight in the current and then we finally landed it, it weighed in at 11 pounds 11 ounces. It is my personal best lightning trout so far. Another epic day on the water.”

Hey,
Polyphenols are back in the news. You might have heard your local news anchor talking them up or read the headlines on CNN, Time or the like – The secret to losing weight: Flavonoids; and eating more foods with flavonoids; The secret to maintaining and losing weight: Berries, onions and wine. Their conclusions all drawn along the lines of – “Researchers suggest that eating more fruits and vegetables rich in flavonoids - such as apples, pears and berries - may aid weight maintenance.” Why all the hype about flavonoids?

Iron maIDen By Jeff Weddle
Named after a medieval torture device, IRON MAIDEN is arguably the biggest modern Heavy Metal band in the world, selling nearly 90 million albums globally. Their self-titled debut in 1980 was followed by the band’s first world tour, including America opening for JUDAS PRIEST at The Aladdin Casino in Las Vegas. This would begin cementing an unrivaled live reputation, with a penchant for spectacular stage productions. Performing over 2000 shows worldwide, IRON MAIDEN continues to be an enormous concert draw to this day. Their discography has grown to 38 releases, encompassing 16 studio LPs, various live albums/DVDs, EPs, compilations, and their own video game, “Ed Hunter”. Their latest, “The Book Of Souls”, is a double CD/LP clocking in at a whopping 92 minutes and features the 18-minute epic “Empire Of The Clouds”. Add to this a Grammy Award, an induction onto Hollywood’s RockWalk, not to mention countless tribute CDs from all genres of music alike, and IRON MAIDEN can be aptly regarded as a phenomenon.
9 Things Only Troopers Would Know 1.
Another U.K. band named IRON MAIDEN existed back in 1969, performing psychedelic rock and recording only one LP entitled “Maiden Voyage”, which was not officially released until 1998.
2.
IRON MAIDEN was the first metal act on MTV during its debut broadcast on August 1, 1981. Music videos for the songs “Iron Maiden” and “Wrathchild” aired as # 16 and 33, respectively, of the first 62 total videos played on that first day.
3.
IRON MAIDEN recruited current vocalist Bruce Dickinson from U.K. rock act SAMSON, where he sang under the name ‘Bruce Bruce’. His real first name is ‘Paul’ (‘Bruce’ being his middle name), but the band didn’t want another singer named Paul! Dickinson recently beat cancer, and on his tongue no less – potentially devastating for a vocalist in any musical genre!
4.
IRON MAIDEN’s seminal 1982 LP “The Number Of The Beast” was banned due to “blatantly satanic” lyrics and artwork, even leading Christian groups in the U.S. to burn their records. Bassist Steve Harris stated the LP was, in fact, inspired by the movie ‘Damien: Omen II’.
5.
20
@ O r a n g e C o u n t yC u lt u r e
Bassist, founder and principal songwriter Steve Harris is the only true original member of IRON MAIDEN, with he and guitarist Dave Murray appearing on every recorded IRON MAIDEN release. Harris is known for developing his own finger-playing style on bass guitar, often cited as sounding “more like a rhythm guitar.”
7.
Coming from punk rock roots, original vocalist Paul Di’Anno (real name Paul Andrews) was once arrested for public drunkenness prior to a show, leaving bassist Steve Harris to do vocals! Upon being ousted from the band, Di’Anno was completely paid out by long-time manager Rod Smallwood and receives no royalties from any IRON MAIDEN songs.
8.
In addition to being an accomplished fencer and author, Bruce Dickinson is also a professional pilot. In 2007, Dickinson actually flew the band to all of their tour destinations via their own chartered jet nicknamed “Ed Force One”, allowing them to perform in countries previously deemed unreachable. This involved first time concerts in Costa Rica and Colombia, as well as being the first major Metal band to play in Dubai. A DVD entitled “Iron Maiden: Flight 666” was released chronicling the entire trek and it’s rumored to be happening again for an upcoming 2016 world tour.
9.
IRON MAIDEN’s devilishly popular mascot ‘Eddie’ is a perennial fixture on nearly all of the band’s recordings and merchandise (including his own action figures!) Created with help from longtime artist Derek Riggs, Eddie’s full name is ‘Ed(die) The Head’ and modeled after a paper-mâché zombie mask used in one of IRON MAIDEN’s earliest stage backdrops.
P h o t o : N O RTH F O T O
IRON MAIDEN played for a staggering 300,000 people, their largest audience ever, in 1985 at the Rock in Rio Festival in Brazil. They would return in 2001, and in front of 250,000 fans, to record their DVD “Rock In Rio.”

OC Killogy SERIES
DATING GAME KILLER
A disturbing look back at OC Serial Killer Rodney Alcala By Sean Stroh Three bachelors grace the stage during a taping of the hit television show “The Dating Game” on September 13, 1978. Seated on the far left, facing the audience, is Bachelor No. 1. Longtime host Jim Lange quickly introduces the handsome 35-year-old, who dons a disco shirt with an oversized collar which serves as a gentle cushion for the man’s prolonged, flowing hair. “Bachelor number one is a successful photographer who got his start when his father found him in the dark room at the age of 13, fully developed. Between takes you might find him skydiving or motorcycling. Please welcome Rodney Alcala.” Unbeknownst to the producers of the show, Alcala was also quite skilled at perhaps his most favorite hobby-murder. In fact, by the time Alcala sat onstage in his attempt to win the heart of Cheryl Bradshaw, he had already claimed at least two victims. And yet, the signs of a man disturbed were certainly there. Despite possessing a near-genius IQ of 135, Alcala had a laundry list of troubling incidents beginning at a very young age. After joining the Army at age 17, he was discharged four years later due to a nervous breakdown and diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder. Shortly after graduating with a degree in fine arts at UCLA in 1968, he was witnessed luring an eight-yearold girl into his car and driving her back to his Hollywood apartment. While police followed him back to his place, Alcala managed to escape through a back door. In an effort to avoid authorities, Alcala fled across country to New York City, where he assumed an alias “John Berger” and enrolled in NYU. In an ironic and dark twist of fate, he would learn the art of photography under film director Roman Polanski, who would later be indicted for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl just a few years later. It wasn’t until Alcala took a counseling job at a New Hampshire arts camp for children that he was recognized as the same man on a widely distributed FBI wanted poster. He would serve 34 months in prison before being released
22
@ O r a n g e C o u n t yC u lt u r e
in 1974. However, just months after being released, Alcala was back in prison for assaulting a 13-year-old girl. By the time he’d completed his second stint in prison in 1977, he had spent a combined total of six years behind bars. Alcala’s final victim, less than a year after his appearing on “The Dating Game”, would be his most infamous one. Robin Samsoe, a 12-year-old girl from Huntington Beach, was on her way to ballet class when she mysteriously disappeared. Her decomposing body would be found 12 days later in the Angeles National Forest. In what would wind up being a thirty year process, Alcala found himself convicted three separate times for the child’s murder after the first two were reversed on appeals. He currently sits on death row at San Quentin State Prison. An accurate total of the number of victims Alcala claimed will likely never be known. Estimates run as low as 8 and as high as 130.
“An accurate total of victims claimed by Alcala will likely never be known, but estimates are between 8 and 130.” Today, there lay a small reminder of the Alcala’s final and youngest victim. At the base of the Huntington Beach Pier sits a modest plaque bearing the face of a youthful Robin Samsoe. Dedicated more than 35 years after her death, the memorial offered some closure for the Samsoe family. “This is something tangible other people can share and learn from and remember,” said Taranne, Samsoe’s older sister, at the time of the plaque’s dedication. “Robin always wanted to be famous. She got more than her 15 minutes at a hefty price.”

Exploring the New Youth Movement in MMA by Daniel Samarin
When thinking of youth sports, you automatically think of Little League, AYSO or Pop Warner football. And while there’s been a youth organization for just about every sport you can think of in this country for the last 50 years, MMA and the youth of the world wasn’t something you heard about 20 years ago or even 10 years ago. We all know youth sports have become very serious these days. Trophy Dads and Moms working their asses off to prepare their little Johnny Icon for that college scholarship and road toward the NFL. But it’s not just limited to the traditional youth sports. With the fireworks explosion of MMA over the past 15, kids at a very early age are working hard to become the modern day warriors they see fighting on TV in UFC, Bellator, and other top organizations. Over the last 10 years jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts gyms have been popping up all over the country, not just for adults but their children too! Kids as young as two are learning the arts of jiu-jitsu, wrestling, boxing, and muay thai all at once, and the Art of Jiu Jitsu Academy in Costa Mesa has over 400 children enrolled in their program, several of whom just took home high honors in a recent tournament. To see just how far the youth have been pulled into MMA is amazing. When I was a kid in the ‘90s there were hardly any MMA gyms in Orange County. On top of that we weren’t even thinking about MMA or the UFC for that matter as a potential career or future. Sport fighting was still on the fringe of society, a brutal sport with brutal consequences. Today there’s a whole new generation of fighters and kids who are aiming to be the future champions of the sport. They can do it all and are excellent in all aspects of the game. Gyms all over the world are cultivating from scratch homegrown super athletes ready to be the next UFC champ. The future of the ever-changing world of MMA lies in the hands of our youth. And that’s a very exciting thing. I think the best of MMA is still to come, and we will see the most ridiculous top level athletes we’ve ever seen. When you take kids from all over the world, from all aspects of life, social class, and origin dreaming of one day making their bones in the octagon as millions of fans cheer them on, the possibilities are limitless. This generation of kids are growing up in the MMA era. For some, it’s all they know. So the next time you see some five or six-year-old girl walking out of the local Jiu Jitsu school wearing a Gui and a pink belt, don’t trip. She’s not like other girls. She could be the future face of MMA. Only time will tell how this new generation of fighters shapes the sport world wide, so in the meantime, let the kids play.

THE NEW GENERATION /// With the coming of the new year, the Art of Jiu Jitsu Academy is excited to introduce a new batch of champions: the #aojjuveniles. With their recent multiple double gold performances at the 2016 IBJJF European Championships in Lisbon, Portugal and the 2016 IBJJF San Jose Open in San Jose, California, they ushered in the new year with more than a bang. Ranging from ages 15 to 17 years young and coming from all different parts of the world, this dedicated group of teens is working morning, day and night to accomplish their dreams of becoming black belt world champions… and the exciting part is this is just the beginning. After winning the ‘Overall Team Title’ the past four years at the IBJJF Kids Pan-Ams, AOJ will constantly be graduating their under 15 year old champions into these juvenile divisions for many years to follow.
Boxing Techniques with Jason Parillo by Jason Parillo / RVCA Sport This month: the heavy bag. You’ve got to apply your game to the heavy bag just like applying your rhythm to your game to help the other exercises you do for boxing. You know, try and develop that distance, work on that snap, work on turning that hand over at the end of the punch ... working on lowering your level so you’re driving with your legs and you’re driving with your hips and you’re staying in a good position as you’re throwin’. A lot of guys a lot of the time are trying to improve punching power. You know, we can take weights and pump ‘em all day, but actually working on a range, working on a distance, working on your timing, throwing your hand over on the extension of the punch is how you develop your punching power and how you condition your arms to throw hundreds and hundreds of punches. “The big A” Ever since we could remember, the Big A - home of the 2002 World Champion Angels - has been looming over the 57 Freeway. Iconic like Disneyland or Knott’s Berry Farm, Angel Stadium has grown on Orange County and the world for that matter.
Angel Stadium has been the home of the Angels since their move from Los Angeles. Ground was first broken for Anaheim Stadium in 1964 and in 1966 the then-California Angels moved into their new home after having spent four hideous seasons renting Dodger Stadium from the Dodgers. In 1998, the stadium was renamed Edison International Field of Anaheim after local utility Edison International reached a deal giving it naming rights over the stadium but exercised its option to exit the sponsorship deal five years in. On December 29, 2003, the Angels announced that from

then on the stadium would be known as Angel Stadium and its original nickname, The Big A, was restored again.
During the 1970s the Big A scoreboard support that stood in left field and was the inspiration for the stadium’s nickname was moved 1,300 feet to its present site in the parking lot, adjoining the Orange Freeway beyond the right-field stands. And last but not least, let’s not forget that Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan threw two of his record seven nohitters inside the Big A, and racked up 2,416 of his 5,714 career strikeouts in eight seasons with the Angels!! With the 2016 season about to begin, all eyes turn to the Big A with hopes and dreams of another World Championship team. I mean, you’ve gotta believe we’ve got the team this year, right?

TATTOOLAND interview with TATTOO ARTIST Brandi Collins
By Jon Richards. Orange County Culture: What got you started in becoming a tattoo artist? Brandi Collins: I was going to college and I knew I wanted to do something in the art field. And then my husband and I were both being tattooed by Lucky a lot and we became really good friends with him and I asked him if I could do an apprenticeship and he said yeah and I worked for him for two years and if I did a good job he would teach me to tattoo. So you initially learned as a traditional artist? Yes, very traditional. That was what I always used to do. He did teach me black and grey but the shop I worked at was mainly a traditional tattoo shop, that was Electric Tattoo in Newport Beach on the peninsula. How did you end up at Good Time Charlie’s Tattooland? Well, after my apprenticeship, I continued at Electric and then ended up at True Tattoo in Hollywood. But most of my clientele was from Orange County and they didn’t want to drive all the way into Hollywood to get tattooed. Both Lucky and Bucky, who did my apprenticeship, were working at Tattooland and I already knew Roy and I had talked to him and asked him if I could do some appointments there. I was actually pregnant at the time with my son and didn’t want to drive from Costa Mesa to Hollywood so I ended up staying at Tattooland.

What types of challenges did you face going from a traditional style of tattoo to learning black and grey? Well at Tattooland is known to be the home of black and grey single needle tattoos. Before working there I had never used a single. A 3 was the smallest and I hated 3’s. I got a little pressured into using the single, and the very first time I ever used a single was on Good Time Charlie’s finger and I was sweating and stressing and it was pretty crazy. At first I was pretty reluctant about using single needle but Roy helped me through it. What’s been the toughest thing about being a female tattoo artist? Really, the only thing I feel was hard for me was getting used to the male work environment. I was the only woman with a bunch of tough guys and hearing their stories and being part of all those conversations was a little bit of a challenge for me. I toughened up. Advice for young girls out there thinking about tattooing someday? I would say do an apprenticeship and do it the right way. Don’t just teach yourelf in the garage. It’s better to do it in the right environment and putting in the work and getting the respect from other tattooers in that way. Good Time Charlie’s Tattooland is located at 2641 W. Lincoln Ave., Anaheim, CA 92801. You can also follow Brandi on Instagram @brandicollins

raising the bar
The SXS Industry is Just Getting Started and SDR Motorsports is Leading the Way by Scott Theriault / Bad Ass Unlimited In 2004, Yamaha came out with a four-wheeled unit called the Yamaha Rhino. This SXS was under-powered and had its flaws, but it was the fuel that started the fire for an Industry that is now exploding at the seams. Since 2004, there have been leaps and bounds made in the technology building these off road platforms. Ever year you see the manufacturers raising the bar by launching SXS’s with more power, turbo motors, better suspension, paddle shifters, and so on. Even with the manufacturers constant evolution, the customer base is still pushing for more customized units than any OEM manufacturer can offer. I recently visited SDR Motorsports in Corona, California, to speak with owner Tim Berendes about how SDR got started and how they evolved into one of the premier builder in the SXS Industry. Tim’s background was in aftermarket car parts and he worked with Smitty Built for some years where he handled product development and sales. In late 2005, Tim was approached by a buddy to customize his Yamaha Rhino. Tim wasn’t over enthused, but this was a friend that wouldn’t take no for an answer, so the build begun. Tim took this ranch style SXS and turned it into an aggressive style off-road machine by building a custom cage, adding custom seats, 4-point harnesses, offroad lights, customized paint and so many more extras turning this $11,000 dollar machine into a $40,000 customized SXS. Once completed, Tim had no idea what was in store for his future until he took the built Yamaha Rhino to SEMA in 2006. The interest expressed by the off-road community was explosive!!! Tim went from building one SXS out of his garage as a favor, into building 232 cars a year with SDR Motorsports. Tim and his team are always setting the bar for this ever growing industry. Off road enthusiasts from around the world visit Costa Mesa annually for the largest offroad show in the industry, the Sand Sports Super Show. Many of them come specifically to see what incredible build SDR Motorsports will be unveiling. It’s safe to say, this Industry in just beginning to gain momentum, and we thank Tim and his team at SDR Motorsports for setting the industry in motion by bringing his innovative designs to the forefront. Keep your eye on SDR Motorsports for more exciting designs coming soon!

There’s nothing like surfing Lowers or Old Mans with the crew then heading to SC Cafe for some hot coffee and delicious grub. Located on south El Camino Real in the beautiful city of San Clemente, you can’t help but love this place. It’s an absolute ‘local’s favorite’ where it’s not uncommon to find yourself a booth away from a top ranked local pro or an international pro surfer visiting the seaside town in search of tasty waves and scrumptous grub. A small cozy cafe with traditional breakfast favorites that I would consider comfort food (Huevos Rancheros is my favorite), we highly reccomend the ever so friendly SC Cafe. The service is always fast and the food’s always spot on.

S t r a i g h t O u t ta C h i n a ! Hong Kong Express (Costa Mesa) Yelper Jerome claims, “You get a crap ton of food here. It’s a run-ofthe-mill Panda Express style Chinese place, but they have things on the menu that aren’t out on display like the soup. It’s nothing fancy and a great place to go if you are craving unhealthy Chinese takeout or something very casual. I definitely would NOT recommend taking a date here. Unless the date is me, then of course, I would oblige with a 3-item combo with an egg roll on the side. I tried the orange chicken which is very similar to Panda’s (that’s a good thing IMO) and also the chicken teriyaki (I ask for no sauce so I’m just getting pure grilled chicken) which is also a great post workout if you mix it with the carbs like rice and chow mein.” Another Yelper Jasmine gave HKE 5 out of 5 stars and says, “I’m giving this place 5 stars as a fast food place as the name says “express” and it’s super affordable, the food is always hot and they have a good variety. I personally love their jalapeño chicken and egg rolls.” Don’t believe ‘em? Try for yourself.

Malarky’s
malarkysirishpub . com Call it ‘luck of the Irish’ but Malarky’s just happens to be a place we frequent a lot. There could be a line around the building on a Friday night and security never keeps us waiting for long. Guess that’s what happens when you frequent a pub for 20 plus years. Malarky’s is always packed with beautiful people and the food is awesome, cooked fresh and made to order. Bartenders are fast, friendly and serve ‘em up strong. If you’re thinking about taking it on this St. Patty’s day, get there early because this place will be raging. What a great Irish pub!--SC 3011 NEWPORT BLVD. O’Hara’s
Newpo r t
O’Hara’s is well-loved by the locals that pack the place on an ordinary basis. A small pub with a big heart, the staff and bartenders are always smiling and willing to go the extra mile. The drinks are well-crafted, the crowd always seems to have friendly energy. The bar has pool tables and a cranking jukebox. “Any day of the week,” writes one fan of O’Hara’s on Yelp, “I would rather hit up a dive bar where I can wear whatever I want, get cheap drinks and burp out loud without having people stare in shock.” That’s the vibe we get from O’Hara’s, you know, a real ‘divey’ Irish feeling bar, what with all the green shamrocks and old school decor. Oh, they don’t serve food but will let you bring in your own if that’s what you wanna do. If you’re in Orange looking for a place to go nuts on St. Patty’s day then O’Hara’s Irish Pub in Orange has your name written all over it. 150 N GLASSELL ST. ORANGE, CA 92866 Phone: (949) 858-0266

Go Australia! Australia means many things to different people. For some it’s a few weeks in Sydney hanging on the local beaches by day and in the Kings Cross area by night. But that’s gets old after a few days. The way to really do Australia, especially if you’ve never been before, is to get yourself to Torquay, Victoria, Australia for the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach held every year during Easter Week. For those of you not in the know, surfing is one of Australia’s national pasttimes and the Aussies love their surfing. They also love their beer, their music festivals and partying which makes Bells Beach at Easter such a slam dunk of a trip. So if you’re looking for a first great trip to Australia, try this .... Remember to book airfare, car and lodging for all aspects of your trip at least a month prior to departure. You can get flight and a car for under 2K. Lodging should just be done on a whim, it’s always funner that way! Schedule your trip so you fly into Sydney 12-14 days before Easter and depart a few days after from Melbourne. Once you arrive, get your car and

spend a few days in and around Sydney, you know, maybe get the ‘Kings Cross’ desires out of your system. Then spend the next three days driving the southeast coast and sleeping at hostiles along your way to Torquay. Your mind will officially be blown by Day 2 of the trip when you get your first glimpse of kangaroos on the beach outside a crip little town called Ulladulla!! By the time you arrive in Torquay you’ll be ready to BLOODY GO OFF!! This is their Mardis Gras. This is how they do Easter! Trust us, after a week at Bells you’ll be ready to head home, but not without a final day’s drive down the Great Ocean Road to check out the Twelve Apostles National Monument Park. Skull cracking epic’ness!! If you make it back on the plane in one piece and didn’t lose any limbs or too many brain cells, congratulate yourself. You just did Australia, mate, and your life’s been changed forever! -- Skip Snead

The Ghosts of
Carbon Canyon by Victoria Johnson Ghostly legends run deep down State Route 142, aka Carbon Canyon Road. Running southwest from the 71 Freeway in Chino Hills, through Olinda Village to its intersection with Lambert Road and Valencia Avenue in Brea, the highway turns south onto Valencia Avenue and ends at State Route 90, Imperial Highway. The road has multiple tight curves and a dark past. Now imagine you’re driving along Carbon Canyon Road at midnight. You’re concentrating on the winding road in front of you, illuminated only by your headlights. You know that there have been a lot of gruesome accidents here, so you try to resist the urge to drive fast. There are no other drivers around. It’s just you, the road, and
70

the silent darkness. But then, it’s not. You see something up ahead – a transparent figure in white. As you get closer, you can make out an old woman in a white dress. She seems to be staring right at you. She’s standing in the middle of the road. You hit your breaks and slam on your horn, then suddenly, she’s gone. This legend is known as the White Lady. Some say her husband died in a mine explosion, and that she lost her mind and drowned her infant child in the creek. This is only one of many apparitions that have been spotted in the area. It’s said that bodies are often dumped along the side of the road, so it should come as no surprise if the area is haunted. There have also been sightings of a woman in all black, a woman with maggots crawling out of her nose, a
half decayed corpse throwing rocks into the water, and a man in a ragged police officer’s uniform. Locals have advised to not approach these ghosts, as they are believed to be hostile. There’s also the legend of the missing young boy who went into the canyon rabbit hunting and was never seen again. His father has been heard crying and screaming out for his son on dark windy nights. Besides the ghosts, many people have also noticed cairns - stacks of rocks - on the side of the road, appearing at random. No one knows for sure who puts them there. Maybe these sightings are the result of sleep deprivation and road hypnosis. But maybe there’s something more going on here. You might have to go see for yourself. But be careful. Don’t go alone.
