1985. Orange County has spawned many a band, from Social Distortion to the Righteous Brothers. At the end of the show, it’s all just great music and it doesn’t matter where it came from. Here we have frontman Michael Stipe and his band REM long before he lost his wig. He was rumored to have said (after a performance at the Pacific Amphitheater in the late 80s) that he loved Orange County and hoped one day to live here. But he never did. That would be quite a change from Athens, Georgia to Orange County. P h ot o : E dwa r d C o lv e r

Few people have seen them in person. We’re talking about the beloved Sailfish. We asked photog Marshall Lally what it was like being in the water with so many of them. “It makes shark diving seem like yoga,” he laughed. “Considering Sailfish can swim up to 60 miles an hour with a sword coming toward your face, it was the fastest, most intense underwtaer experience I’ve ever had.” P h o t o : @ M a r s h a l l _ L a l ly

OCTOBER 2015

Culture Klub

It should be a crazy winter. Our local mountains could be covered with more snow than the entire Sierra’s got the past few seasons, which is great news for So Cal’s mountain resorts, like Baldy, Big Bear and Wrightwood. And even if it’s not the best winter ever, we know it’s going to be hyped as such, being an El Nino year and all. Just to set the vibe, here’s Gabe Ferguson with a sick frontside 540 tail grab last winter. Boom, Pow, Bang!! (insert mic drop here!) Her name is Jill, a beautiful and once aspiring pro surfer from Hawaii who spent a lot of time in the OC doing her thing, which was turning heads on her surfboard at Blackies. And then one day something happened. She was allegedly arrested and booked on an attempted murder charge in Hawaii after allegedly driving over an old woman who allegedly ticked her off. She went to jail but was never convicted of the attempted murder charge due to reason of insanity. So that’s that. We’re praying for her to turn things around!

Update on jill hansen aka “pinky”

Jail Babes of oc Oh boy, take a good long look at this fine young lass. Who knows what the hell she ‘allegedly’ got popped for but we honestly don’t care. They probably dried her tears and set her free. Either way, she’s a smokin’ hot jail babe.

Lunch with a Homie This month we’re hanging out with Dennis Ball, 60, a very interesting man who’s been cruising the streets of Orange County. He’s originally from Long Beach. We bought him some Del Taco and he shared with us his story .... Orange County Culture: How long have you been in the streets, Dennis? Dennis: About 11 years. I was an electrician. And then I became an alcoholic and lost everything; my job, my family, my home.

Then

Now

SlideBAR: Then and Now The back of the building, which is now the main entrance of The Slidebar, was basically an old, run down warehouse with some kind of wooden barn type thing next to it. It later became a coffee and sandwich place called The Hub Cafe. The Hub also had live bands out on their patio. Santa Fe Ave, which is now known as “Soco” was a very seedy part of town. Kind of looked like a ghost town in the old west or something. The front of The Slidebar building that faces Commonwealth Ave used to be 2 different retail locations. The building that the kitchen is in used to be an antique store and later became an 80’s themed arcade called The Reagan Years. The band room used to be a collectible toy store. When The Slidebar was under construction, The Reagan Years was moved over to that room so the kitchen could be built. Eventually, the arcade was game over and the room was made for all of the amazing shows that have gone on in there over the years. --Jeremy Popoff, owner, Slidebar Fullerton

If you could change anything you did, what would that be? Don’t drink. Biggest mistake I’ve ever made. I’ve been sober now for six years. Congrats on that! Your sign says Homeless Not Helpless. I love that. Could you explain? I think we all are responsible for our own actions. I mean, I can’t blame anyone for where I am. All I can say is I love God, I love this country and I believe in the power of positive thinking. That’s refreshing. I’ve seen you around before and you’re always smiling. What makes you so happy? Waking up every day and I have a lot of friends on the streets and there are a lot of people who take the time to help me with food and clothing. And I even have a pastor who stops and prays with me!

a Wicked Chamber of awesomeness There’s a number of reasons Wicked Chamber in Costa Mesa is the hottest and sexiest costume boutique in Orange County. Customers on their Yelp page have given them 4.5 out of 5 stars which says. One Yelper commented, “I was looking for an outfit for nocturnal. They had a whole SECTION for it! I was in and out in 15 minutes!” Another Yelper chimed in, “A special thank you to the girl who helped me find my white rabbit outfit!” That’s the Wicked Chamber we’re talking about! Look, Halloween pop up shops come and go but Wicked Chamber’s open all year. This one stop shop has everything you need! Check ‘em out at 1959 Harbor Blvd, Costa Mesa

Angler of the month: Todd Tremayne Our local catch of the month comes to us from seasoned Orange County angler Todd Tremayne. Todd was with a buddy on a private boat four miles off Newport when he snagged this 40-pound yellowtail a couple weeks ago. Not a day later he dropped by our office, gave us this photo and some slabs of fresh fish and said, “What more do ya want?” Next thing you know he’s in the mag!

BEHIND THE COVER: Oct ‘15 As you can see this month’s cover is about as sick as it gets and here to talk about it is the photographer himself who took the photo, the OC-based, world traveling, shark-whispering legend Marshall Lally. “This shot was taken off of Guadalupe Island, Mexico,” Marshall told us. “White Sharks migrate there in the fall months to feed on Elephant Seals and Tuna that heavily populate the waters. Here tourists, not just those who are scuba certified, can enjoy their presence in the safety of a cage. Guadalupe is the perfect place to experience and enjoy Mother nature’s Apex Predators and see up close that White Sharks aren’t the mindless killers that they are made out to be.” And he would know! For more info on Marshall’s Deep Blue Dreams go toMLallyPhoto.com or email marshall@mlallyphoto.com

Finally, an inexpensive place in the OC you can take your kids to check out the most exotic reptiles in the world! That’s Prehistoric Pets in Fountain Valley. It’s the most epic place in the world to observe exotic reptiles, some of which are not even on display at the largest zoos in the world. That’s how massive their collection of specialized and rare reptiles is! One of the coolest things at Prehistoric Pets is The Reptile Zoo, a unique educational entertainment facility that houses over 100 exotic species of reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids from around the world, and probably the craziest thing we’ve ever seen, a estimated 100-year Alligator Snapping Turtle. Prehistoric Pets is an absolute must-see.

The Legend of Metal Jimmy: Can He Save Heavy Metal? I n t e rv i e w by S k i p S n e a d a n d C r a bby

Orange County Culture: What’s up, Metal Jimmy? Metal Jimmy: Whoa, your office, it’s fricken killer. Can I look around? It’s like a flashback, everything I grew up on, like Spicoli’s bedroom. So Metal Jimmy, you’ve been around these parts for the last several years. When did you come to Orange County? I came to Orange County after I spent ten years in North County San Diego. I moved to San Diego to become a pro surfer but it didn’t work out. So how’d you become a metal man? I met these guys when I lived down in San Diego, you know, Brian Hensen, you know, Slash, and all those kids coming to the skatepark with their inverted crosses on their skateboards and rockin’ out. They were skating listening to Priest, the energy was insane. When did you become known as Metal Jimmy? I became Metal Jimmy when I went to my first Iron Maiden show in San Diego in the year 2000 when they got back together with Bruce Dickinson. I sold my soul for rock n’ roll. Have you ever cut your hair? I cut my hair once after I became a metal head, when I moved back in with my mom. It felt pretty lame. Biggest mistake you ever made? Definitely. A lot of metal music comes from the dark side. What comes to your mind when you hear the words serial killer? Charles Manson. The reason why I like him, or personally respect him, is because he didn’t do any of the killings. He was a master manipulator. A puppet master!! Who introduced you to metal? My two brothers Phillip and David. They were listneing to Dio and Iron Maiden. I was seven years old singing Ronnie James Dio on the beach in Manhattan Beach. Yeah, Ronnie James!! When did you start head-banging? When I went to Iron Maiden in 2000. What’s your goal for heavy metal? Bringing metal and surfing to the masses. How are you bringing metal to the kids? Keep telling them to stand up for rock ‘n roll, you know, heavy metal. Not to worship satan. Not to worship anything. What’s your favorite metal band and album of all time? Deep Purple. Made in Japan. The live one. What’s the best concert you - Metal Jimmy - have ever seen? I guess it would have to be Iron Maiden, Dio and Motorhead at the Long Beach Arena with the best sound in the world. What metal band would you like to introduce to the world right now? Enforcer. They’re from Sweden. Pure melodic speed metal, but like hard rock speed metal. I would compare them to Iron Maiden and King Diamond and maybe some hard rock like Def Leppard or someone like that. That’s Enforcer’s influences. So word on the streets is that you’re forming a metal band?

The interview starts with Metal Jimmy walking into the Orange County Culture office....

Yes, well, it’s just in the writing process right now.... But it’s coming. I’m going to be lead vocals. I have to be. I have to be lead vocals because I won Best Karaoke in the OC Weekly back when I was 31 at Detroit Bar singing Holy Diver. But have you ever sung in a real metal show with a real band in front of a live audience? Yes I have. It was at the Volcom HQ during a skate contest, and David (Daveed) called me up and asked me if I would sing a couple songs for him. I sang Hell Bent for Leather by Judas Priest and Iron Maiden’s The Trooper. So tell us about this new Metal Neck movie coming out? Right now we have no idea, and the reason why we have no idea is because we’re getting other friends from all over the world who want to be in our movie, seriously. But for updates on the release

you can go to metalneck.tv and go to our Instagram which is @metal_neck. Now we gotta believe this is going to have a metal soundtrack from hell! We prefer to let the surfers choose the song they want in their segment but we’re going to put heavy metal in my part, I’ll tell you that! So what’s the future for Metal Jimmy? Surf the best waves in the world with my friends and fellow metal neckers, spreading hard rock and heavy metal to the world with all my friends’ bands, including maybe my band... tour hopefully, if I’m in a band ... And also just to live as beautiful happy life and have beautiful children someday as well. Anything you want to add? I just want to make sure and thank ...Lost clothing, Black Flys Eyewear and Wave Tools Surfboards for all their support! Long live metal!

Night Stalker A chilling look back at serial killer Richard Ramirez By Sean Stroh

The date--Sunday, Aug. 25, 1985. The time-1:30 a.m. Wide-eyed 13-year-old James Romero couldn’t fall asleep. While his parents and sister slept inside their single-story Mission Viejo home, The boy slowly tip toed out a side door to grab a pillow inside his family’s camper. As he gently eased his way outside, a menacing figure stood in the shadows. Although Romero couldn’t make out a physical shape, he quickly recognized the distinct sound of something close by--human footsteps. Romero slipped inside his garage, his heart beating fast, crouched behind his parent’s car and waited. Within a few minutes, the menacing figure abandoned his probing of the house, sprinted to his Orange Toyota station wagon and sped away. The boy couldn’t recognize the entire license plate but managed to remember four characters: 482 T. The Night Stalker had reached Orange County. Unbeknownst to the police, who interviewed the Romero family within ten minutes of receiving a call of a man lurking on their property, Richard Ramirez had come across his final two victims a little more than a mile away. While police officers wrote an official report of the incident at the Romero household, Ramirez found an opening. Without awaking 29-year-old Billy Carns or his girlfriend, Ramirez calmly pulled out his .25 caliber handgun and shot the young electric engineer three times at point-blank range. As Carns lay unconscious, Ramirez tied Billy’s hysterical girlfriend with several ties, then visciously raped her and forced her to pray to Satan. Just a few days later, a Toyota station wagon with the license plate 482 RTS was found in a parking lot in Los Angeles. Fingerprints found on the car were matched within days to Ramirez. The following morning, LAPD ended his reign of terror by capturing Ramirez after a failed attempt to steal a Mustang in Boyle Heights. Ramirez’s terrorizing rampage through California began over a year prior to his capture. The devil-worshipping serial killer’s first victim was an innocent 9-year-

22

old named Mei Lung, who was later found hanging from a pipe in a hotel basement in San Francisco. Lung would not be connected to his crime spree until 2009, when Ramirez’s DNA was matched to the DNA collected at the crime scene. Throughout his murderous frenzy, many of the characteristics of his violent crimes remained the same. His victims were random, typically couples asleep in their bed, with the unsuspecting male being shot multiple times before raping and torturing the female. Though arguably the most notorious aspect of his maniacal killings was how he would break into each household--either through an unlocked door or an open window.

“I am beyond good and evil. I will be avenged. Lucifer dwells in us all. That’s it.” -- The Night Stalker Several years after his capture, Ramirez was convicted of 13 murders, five attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults and 14 burglaries. While he would ultimately die from B-cell lymphoma while on death row at San Quentin State Prison in 2013, the calm, cool and sinister words of Ramirez have never been forgotten. “You don’t understand me. You are not expected to. You are not capable of it. I am beyond your experience,” Ramirez said shortly after being sentenced to death in 1989. “I am beyond good and evil. I will be avenged. Lucifer dwells in us all. That’s it.”

Marshall Lally Interview by Steve Cabler and Skip Snead We’ve been planning this special Deep Blue Dreams feature since long before we ever put our first magazine out. Our friend Brophy told us about this legendary guy who practically lives under water taking photos amongst some of the most fiercest species on the planet. His name was Marshall Lally and the second we viewed his Instagram @Marshall_Lally we swore his work would end up on the cover of our magazine. And that we’d interview him about his amazing profession. Upon meeting Marshall we expected some badass type dude with tats and stuff but he ended up being one of the most mild-mannered gentlemen we’ve ever met. Down to earth, humble and extremely tuned into the underwater world. Now let’s chat with Marshall.

Orange County Culture: What do you think of all the shark hype these days? Is it warranted? Marshall Lally: Yeah, well, the water temperature’s up and we had a Whale shark in Catalina, which is very strange for these waters. Maybe over fishing and lack of food brings them in. You know, the beach is a wall to sharks, they could be chasing in their prey to shallower waters. I mean, we’ve always had them. (As for the hype the last few years) I attribute a lot of it to GoPros, SUP and polarized lenses. For example at San Onofre, before people started stand up paddling there and putting GoPros on their ankles, and then looking back at their footage and seeing juvenile Great White sharks everywhere, they didn’t just get there. They’ve been there for years. People were just surfing. They weren’t standing up looking down over the water with a new perspective. And there’s been talk about this Hammerhead and beaches being closed and I’ve spent

a lot of time with Hammerheads and they are the most timid shark I’ve ever seen, even in waters full of food for them. And where there’s kids, there’s parents, right? Not always. Sharks are pretty bad parents. They’re gone. They’re not nurturing like a whale or other mammal that stays with their offspring for life. Sharks are pretty bad parents. And the juveniles, well, they don’t have the big teeth yet, they have fish-eating teeth so when they see us there’s no interest at all, as is proven by the fact that there’s been zero attacks there. Wait, did you say flesh-eating teeth? Fish eating teeth. (Laughs). And you’re right. Zero attacks in Orange County, that we know of. So ... have you ever been scared? Not really. I’ve been close. I’ve had a few encounters that were a little too close for comfort but I do know what I’m getting into. You expect those sharks to bump you and get close and investigate, but again, the water is scented heavily so they’re on alert. They’re hungry. Is it peaceful down there when you’re shooting these stars of the sea? When I got into this, I thought it was for the “Wow factor”, or what I call the “Jaws Factor” and it was during my first dive with an Oceanic White Tip that I thought I would be scared when it came up to me but there was this sense of calm. I remember it passed right over my head, kept my camera up between us, and I found the experience to be very peaceful. Let’s talk Tigers. You dive with them too right? Yeah, and Tigers are my favorite shark actually. They’re peaceful. I feel like I’m swimming with my puppy dogs.

Prev

And they’ll just swim up to you? Yeah, well, we’ll bait the water pretty good, because what we’ve learned is that they don’t really want anything to do with us without it. I’ve sat on crates in some of the sharkiest waters in the world, scenting the water, and I couldn’t even get a shark to come out of the shadows. Other times, like we went to a place north of Cuba for a week, people couldn’t get their Groupers onto the boats because the sharks were taking ‘em all before they could pull them up. These people would come back to Florida and say, “We have just seen the sharkiest waters we’ve ever seen!!” We heard about it and wanted to go dive it. People were taking bets that we wouldn’t come back in one piece (nervous laughter) ... so we were down there for about four or five days chumming water and then, out of the deep blue, a shadow. Finally one Tiger came in to investigate us and took off. One grey Hammerhead came in, took off. But not the sharks we were hoping to see based on the stories we’d heard about in those waters. Maybe the bubbles from our tanks scared them.

“A smiling Lemon Shark at Tiger Beach, Bahamas”

What have you learned about spending more time underwater with these creatures than most of us ever will? I would say that these sharks have personalities. They have names. They have tendancies that you pick up on. I mean, spending eight hours a day with one specific Tiger shark is pretty altering, and you get to know them. And we had one, it was probably one of my favorite sharks, it had two hooks in her mouth, was blind in an eye it appeared, and my friend and I were on the boat and it was hot and we wanted to go in and started looking for sharks and it was kind of murky and this shark just came out of the blue, and surprised us. We were in shallow water, only about ten feet deep, the shark came out and it looked battered. It had scars, the hooks ... we started feeding it and after a while it became comfortable and spent hours circling us and coming back in for food. It would always come to me first, even though I didn’t have the food. She would come up to me, almost like a puppy dog saying hi, and I’d get the photograph and then it just repeated all day. After I got plenty of photos and video, I just enjoyed it. I put my hand

“My favorite Tiger Shark who played for hours with this smile. Tiger Beach, Bahamas”

out and scratched her snout as she’d go by. She’d turn on her side as if she seemed to enjoy it. Seems like the shark was protective of you even ... It was more of a mutual respect. But I felt closer to that shark after spending so much time with it. Now I see other people’s photos of the same shark, because you do recognize them, especially with those hooks, and I kind of feel like I’m looking at an old friend. I kind of get a little jealous, like, hey, that’s my shark! What about pecking orders and matriarchs and patriarchs. Have you seen that type of thing in the water? Is there a leader and someone barking orders and stuff like that going on? Yeah, it’s not audible obviously, but in terms of body language. I’ve seen it the most in the Bahamas, this place we go for Lemon sharks. You pull up in the boat and you’ll have 20 to 30 Lemon sharks ... they’re everywhere! They’re about six or seven foot and they’re a cool looking shark with sharp teeth and a yellow hue to their skin. And anytime I’m in the water with sharks, that’s great. I always want to be in the water with sharks. So one time, I go down and I’m filming these Lemons, and then a darker shadow comes in and it’s a tiger. And it is no question among those sharks that the tiger is the boss. They don’t get in his way. The tiger will come in, nudge them out, and hang around and get scraps, but the tiger is the leader of the show. And from there it depends on size. We’ve had multiple Tigers at times and they’re gonna turn on their side slightly, that shows they’re sizing up a shark next to them, and they’ll pull ahead of them. If the shark turns on its side that showing that he’s the boss. The bigger one will show that display. Same with grey Hammerheads as well. They do the same thing.

Deep blue dreams of Marshall Lally (Cont..)

Have you ever seen sharks and whales in the water at the same time? Yeah, there’s some waters I’ve been in where there’s no so many big sharks, just scavenger sharks ... as you know, an Orca whale ... well, there’s been attacks on great whites by Orcas and the waters where that happens, the sharks will vacate and never return, which is pretty amazing. And crazy enough they only go for the tongue and liver of the shark. That’s all they’ll eat. They’re amazing creatures.

killed at such big numbers every year for shark fin soup and for even commercial fishing, I think the more people see and can connect with these animals without having to get in the water with them themselves, I think you protect what you love and what you care about and that’s really the goal is to just show these animals without chomping on things and being shown with scary music behind them. My goal is to just show them as peaceful and beautiful, as I see them when I look at them eye to eye.

Have you been in the water with Orcas? Yeah I’ve actually encountered an Orca whale in the Socorro Islands in Mexico. We were there with two Humpback whales, a mother and her calf and two Orcas showed up and within minutes separated the mother from the baby, right before our eyes ... not that I was worried about the Orca attacking me, but when those humpback whales at 70,000 pounds are in defense mode of the baby, you don’t want to be in the way.

What advice do you have to kids wanting to get involved in your line of work when they get older? Well, I was lucky enough to have some of the best mentors in the business, like my great friend Bob McNearny. He brought me on a trip, saw that I had a passion, invited me on another trip and it just grew from there. And then he sold me a camera for a really good price and encouraged me to get into it. I’m really thankful that I had someone like him, one of my good friends to help me. But for kids, I’d say start with a camera, even a GoPro, and get in the water as much as possible and be smart about it. Don’t just throw blood in the water, but go with someone who knows what they are doing. Get in the water, get your feet wet and as your courage grows you’ll see what you’re dealing with on a slow pace and then I suggest getting in the water with Tiger sharks (laughs). Everyone should.

Did you see the final attack? Yeah I did. We followed the Orcas, and they brought it up, we saw the baby take its last breath, and then down, and then we kind of got back in the water and they dismantled it. The heaviest part was seeing the mother circling the island looking for her baby screaming through her blow hole. Did you photograph it? I did, but they’re really graphic and I don’t share them because it’s pretty much the saddest photo I’ve ever taken. But that’s nature.

She is not only a 2x Woman’s MMA champion, a 2x world Jiu-Jitsu champion, but she’s one of the very few MMA combatants (Man or Woman) that has also competed at a very high level of professional Muy Thai and Kickboxing. Cyborg really exploded onto the scene as she made her highly talked about U.S. MMA debut against Shayna Baszlerback back in 2008 at EliteXC: Unfinished Business. And of course like in 99% of her fights she dropped her opponent like a bad habit winning via TKO. Since then she has completely obliterated her opponents winning all 11 of her fights, 10 of them by rearranging her opponents face by a bludgeoning of knees, fists, and elbows. So what’s stopping her from taking the UFC belt? Ronda Rousey? Not even! We all know that Cyborg wins that fight 10 out of 10 times. But why has this fight not happened? It’s a weight issue - not a talent issue. Cyborg cuts down to 145lbs to weigh-in in order to fight, but she has to make the 135lbs weight limit in order to fight for the UFC belt. Difficult but not impossible. For Cyborg it’s much more of a medical concern because it’s a lot more dangerous for a woman to cut a significant amount of weight compared to a man because women have a much different body composition. Cyborg has virtually zero body fat and to cut down she would literally have to give up some muscle mass and strength; which is a big part of her game. Ronda is no small woman herself, and has fought at 145lbs in MMA and 155lbs in judo before. All of the cherry-picked opponents she has fought have been much more physically smaller, weaker, and no where near the skill level of her, so it has been easy for her to bully her opponents. Against Cyborg…that is not happening. Cyborg will be moving down for the first time in her career to 140lbs for her next fight at Invicta FC 15 in November, as this will be one step closer to her eventually making that 135lbs marker. If all goes right and Cyborg can make that 135lbs marker and get that much long over due dream matchup against Ronda, I can guarantee you that it will hands down be the biggest Woman’s fight in history and bring in millions of dollars. If this fight does eventually happen one day, two titans will collide and only one will walk away as the true undisputed champion with their hand raised and head help up high. The whole world will officially see what true MMA fans know, and that is Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino is the pound for pound baddest woman on the planet.

Allysha Bergado

destroy For this month’s “Who’s Ripping” shoutout I have the privledge to bring you 19-year-old Allysha Bergado. She has a deep resume and the heart and soul of a true competitor. Cool as shit, humble and shy, she learned to skate at seven years old. Allysha was born in El Segundo, CA and masters in vert, bowls, mini-ramps and pools and when she’s not skating she’s busy playing guitar or tennis or hanging out with friends. Skating, however, is her #1 passion. She was the youngest X-Games female skateboarding competitor at only 12 and most recently took out the women’s pro division in the 2015 Van Doren Invitational held during the Vans US Open this past summer in HB. Allysha’s also done TV media projects, is conscious about her health, and is a big supporter of B4BC, a cancer awareness foundation for women. Allysha is calm, cool and collected and she’s top ranked. I believe she is one of the nails that builds the house of professional women’s skateboarding .--Ray Bones.

Allysha is sponsored by Hoopla Skateboards, Bones Wheels and Bearings, S-One Helmets, 187 Pads, Independent Trucks, SoCAL Skate Shop, Etnies Shoes, Robot-Guts Hardware

KILLING

LOW ERS wo r d s a n d p h oto by J o e Fo s t e r

The weeks leading up to the Hurley Pro are some of my favorite times of the year to shoot. It’s within these weeks we get to shoot the worlds best surfers free surfing and tuning up for the contest. It’s always interesting to see who shows up first, who’s the first at the beach every morning and who’s seemingly in sync with the wave. This shot of John John Florence was taken early on one such morning. He would be out in a wetsuit, then in board shorts, then he’d vanish again only to show up later wearing something else. JJF’s one of the funnest surfers to watch on the planet and I always look forward to him showing up at Lowers. I would say he’s the paparazzi equivalent to Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie. Until next year, John John, thanks once again for blowing our minds.

Motorhead INk This Month: FMX’er Clinton Moore When you’re talking freestyle motocross these days, Clinton Moore’s name always seems to come up. This guy has no fear - I’m talking full throttle everytime he takes flight on his bike. This guy fricken’ flies. At 27 the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour leader and Australian superstar always loved the tattoos he’d seen on his predecessors, and couldn’t wait until he was old enough to get his first dose of ink. He is now completely covered, literally, from head to toe with tattoos, each and every one with its own important meaning. Speaking of toes, his first tattoo was done by his older brother, on his toe, a very crude cross. “I’ve still got plenty of room and plenty of ideas for more,” he says. “I think I’ll get more tattoos when I get older but I don’t want to rush into them.” Clinton Moore is part of an elite group of motorheads that live hard and have no regrets. The goal it seems is to outdo each other, whether it’s hands free 50 feet in their air, or covering themselves in ink. One thing’s for sure: these guys command respect as well as the artists who have etched these beautiful works of art on their skin.

Beach Pit BBQ in Costa Mesa.

Dorymen’s Fleet Fish Market in Newport.

If you didn’t know about it, you could drive right past it. But believe me, if you like BBQ - I mean real honest to goodness BBQ - you can thank your lucky stars that I’m gonna tell you about this place. The first time I walked into the Beach Pit BBQ the smell alone made my mouth water. This quaint little cozy tin-roofed gem has an ambiance like no place I’ve ever been. The menu reminds me of real Texas style BBQ - I’m talkin’ pulled pork to die for and blueberry melt-in-your-mouth cornbread. I’ve never had anything like it! And the ribs! Incredible ribs ... fall off the bone ribs. And the chicken! Fuhget about it! Look, if you want real BBQ get over there tonight and visit owner John Morris, the King of BBQ. This is the best BBQ I’ve ever eaten outside of Texas. BBQ done right. Kudos, Jon!! See you in the pit! The Beach Pit!--SC

This goes back to my childhood. Being born in the 60s, my grandfather, God bless his soul, used to take me to the Newport pier to fish. Before a long sunburned day of hooking Tom Cod off the pier, he would always take me to the Dory Fleet Fish market located adjacent to the pier to check out the morning’s catch. It’s crazy to think this started in 1891 ... talk about Orange County history! The fleet consists of 10 fishermen, actually eight men and two women, each with a specific job fishing for certain types of fish and shellfish. Go down there for the freshest seafood available in OC and you might meet angler Steve “Crabby” Escobar, who will show you everything from fresh Octopus, Rock and Spider crab to Red Snapper and local favorites such as Spot Prawn, the largest of the shrimp family considered to be even tastier than lobster. In 1969 the Newport Beach Historical Society recognized the fleet as a permanent historical landmark, so if you want to eat out but cook at home, go to the Dory Fleet fish market and get yourself a taste of that old world charm.--SC

Eat L i k e A B r i t ! Union Jack Fish & Chips in Costa Mesa. It almost feels as if you were in foggy London. The smell of fresh fish cooked to a golden brown perfection and the chips are amazing. Batter’s always fresh and light and never over-cooked. The atmosphere is very personal with only four tables! The service is fast and very friendly. Oh yeah, and the shrimp is scrumptious! Your meal will be ready within ten minutes as every meal is made fresh to order. They even keep the vinegar and ketchup in the fridge because they care. So go get some and eat like a Brit!--SC

San Clemente is the jewel of south Orange County. Home to some of the best surf in California, the most beautiful real estate, fantastic weather and fabulously gorgeous people. The sun shines bright on this magic little city, but where do the locals go at night? The OC Tavern of course. The Tavern is stuffed full of pool tables and has long been the place to go for live music, great food and world class partying. They are famous for massive gatherings for sporting events as well and are one of the few bars in the OC who live for horse racing. Locals have told us it’s the only place in town to watch the UFC fights, and we heard the Rousey fight was so packed it was standing room only. The legend continues.--SC 2369 S. A primary stated goal of the geoengineering programs is to provide a “solar shield” to slow “runaway climate change” by spraying tens of millions of tons of highly toxic heavy metal nano-particulates (a nanometer many more aspects is 1/1,000,000,000 of a meter) into the atmosphere and agendas related to from jet aircraft (the smaller the particle, the more the atmospheric spraying dangerous it is in the environment). Meet our Miss October, Jordan Smith, 16, from Coto de Caza. Jordan is a sophomore at Tesoro High School who has quite the extra-curricular schedule. Sure, she’s an aspiring model with Brand Model and Talent but don’t let her pretty face fool you: This girl’s tough as nails and is a member of the interscholastic team at the OC Polo Club. She’s also into helping others as we discovered in our quick chat with her ... OC Culture: Tell us how you got into playing such a dangerous sport like polo? Jordan Smith: I got into polo because my Dad had been doing it for a while and told me to join the interscholastic team at the OC Polo Club to see if I liked it. I started when I was 10 and have been playing ever since. We also heard you’re doing some charitable work. How does it make you feel helping others? Yes, right now I’m volunteering at Families Forward because I feel like I was blessed with such a wonderful life that the least I could do was give something back. When I’m volunteering it makes me feel like a really good person and that I’m actually doing a little something to change someone’s life. I especially liked helping with the Back to School event, where we gather donated backpacks and school supplies and hand them out to kids less fortunate. I think that everyone should volunteer at some point in their life for that feeling of gratitude and realize how lucky they are. What’s the future hold for you? In the future I plan on attending a great four year college, and I’m not sure what I’ll be majoring in, but something that takes me far in life with exciting people and places. I also plan on continuing and expanding my modeling career. After college I want to travel and take in what the world has to offer before settling down and starting a family. I plan on the next ten years to be valuable and amazing!
