LETTER FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD CHAIR AND SUPERINTENDENT

Dear OCPS Volunteers and Partners:

Welcome to the 2024 Crystal Awards! We are thrilled to honor our outstanding ADDitions School Volunteers and Partners in Education during today’s celebration.

Your continuous commitment to giving your time and talent to Orange County Public Schools helps our students academically, socially and personally. It also brings much-needed resources to our nearly 208,000 students and school communities throughout the year. You read books with our students, assist our teachers, mentor our teens, make connections and give students the inspiration and that extra nudge they need.

As an amazing volunteer, you reflect and shine, inspiring and providing supplemental learning opportunities and real-world knowledge to our students. Your contributions assist administrators, teachers and staff across the eighth-largest school district in the nation.

Our business partnerships, both new and long-term, go the distance by fulfilling campus needs, appreciating our teachers and staff, enhancing educational experiences and providing workforce opportunities for our students.

We are grateful to our partners and volunteers for being an essential part of our OCPS family. Your support and dedication are needed more than ever. Thank you for investing in our students and helping our teachers lead them to success, now and in the future.

Sincerely,

During her more than 30-year career at Orange County Public Schools, Ermelinda Rolón has worked in the community outreach department. Ermelinda managed various programs, including Ethnic Achievers, Language Bank, Green Circle, Un Poquito de Español and Community Resource Volunteers. In the early 1990s, her efforts and leadership brought OCPS classroom guest lecturers from more than 90 languages and dialects. She and her team members would conduct the Community Resource Volunteers (CRV) Fair every year, allowing speakers to promote their vocations and areas of interest, eventually leading to the creation of the CRV Catalog, which teachers used to schedule classroom presentations. The CRV program featured speakers such as Orlando Magic basketball player Shaquille O’Neal, Harlem Globetrotter Curly Neal and Mr. King, an 80-year-old volunteer who has been teaching his love of the beautiful butterfly life cycle and rock artifacts for more than 20 years.

Ermelinda’s professional accomplishments include coordinating multiple Orlando Magic and NBA Stay in School Jam programs. The “Jam” gave middle school children who had perfect attendance the opportunity to be recognized as NBA team players for a day as well as attend a one-of-a-kind concert, especially for them! Celebrity guests included Will Smith, MC Hammer, Heavy D, MC Lyte, Malcolm Jamal

Warner, Kid ‘N Play, Mayim Bialik, NBA All-Stars, NBA Hall of Famer Bob Lanier and many more.

She provided direct leadership for the district’s school volunteer program, which included more than 56,000 school volunteers and nearly 400 school volunteer coordinators each year. The duration of her 26-year volunteer program career reflects her reach and the influence of more than 950,000 volunteers and 10,500 coordinators. OUTSTANDING PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

FLORIDA EDUCATION COMMISSIONER’S BUSINESS RECOGNITION AWARD - REGION III AND ORANGE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS PARTNERS OF THE YEAR

New Life Ministries World Outreach Center, Inc.

Faith-Based Rolling Hills Elementary Elementary Schools - Cadre 8

New Life Ministries World Outreach Center has a mission to give back to the community and serve families in its local neighborhoods. The organization partners with Rolling Hills Elementary, a Title I school, across the street from its campus. New Life Ministries World Outreach Center kicked off the current school year by giving 125 backpacks to students. Some of the projects have included assisting more than 100 families at Thanksgiving and adopting several families during the holidays. One of the most impactful efforts of New Life Ministries World Outreach Center is hosting and maintaining a food pantry and clothing closet for Rolling Hills Elementary School’s families, which provides a resource at the church to help fill their needs. Outreach Director Raven Kirkland is the lead volunteer for the partnership. Volunteers from the church frequently support school events such as Truck–or-Treat, Guest Reader Day and other family-night activities hosted at the various schools. New Life Ministries World Outreach Center is a beaming example of how a faith-based partner supports schools and continues to focus on investing in student success.

Kendrick eXp Realty Professional Districtwide Partnerships

For Kendrick eXp Realty, which is led by Kevin Kendrick, investing in student success is a passion of the heart. Kevin was a teacher and principal, which led his realty group to be a strong connection for supporting OCPS students and teachers. When he pivoted into real-estate sales, he continued to support OCPS schools as one of its Partners in Education. Today, CEO Kevin Kendrick and Kendrick eXp Realty are working with 10 schools.

Throughout the year, Kendrick eXp Realty focuses on ways to recognize the staff for their academic impact. They are known for surprising the staff with catered snacks or meals during meetings or school functions. The focus doesn’t stop there; the students also see the benefits of Kendrick eXp Realty becoming a partner with the school. They show up to judge competitions, serve on school parent organizations and share their college and career experiences with students.

Kendrick eXp Realty’s contributions support STEM and fine arts programs so students can have expanded learning opportunities. Notably, the Lake Nona High theater program has received more than $15,000 to fund equipment and instrument updates and travel expenses so students can participate in unique learning experiences. We commend Kendrick eXp Realty for creating inspiring and positive relationships between OCPS’ teachers, support staff, administrators, parents and schools.

Texas Roadhouse Orlando Restaurant Districtwide Partnerships

Texas Roadhouse Orlando is known for its hot rolls and supporting student success. Since 2018, they have expanded its partnerships to 25 OCPS schools and have donated gift certificates and lunches. Several schools have seen an increase in participation and their attendance and reading goals.

Texas Roadhouse’s school-business partnership activities facilitate hands-on learning experiences for OCPS’ scholars. Every year, Texas Roadhouse participates in the nationally recognized Teach-In program. Students learn about the restaurant industry with insights into industry practices and applying theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. This experiential learning opportunity not only enhances their academic understanding but also equips students with the skills and competencies sought by future employers. Some OCPS high school students have even joined the Texas Roadhouse team! Such collaborations have offered countless advantages, ranging from teacher and staff support to experiential learning options.
