Name: Monica Johnson Years of Service: 44 Position: Principal Location: Castle Creek Elementary

As the first summer acceleration and enrichment camp session ends at Castle Creek Elementary on Thursday, June 30, Principal Monica Johnson will be closing the book on her public-education career after more than four decades at OCPS. “Being an educator and principal has been a hard job, but I have loved every minute of it,” said Johnson, who has a doctorate in programs for children and youth education and Master of Science in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University and a Bachelor of Science in music education from the University of Florida.

“Dr. Johnson is an incredible person who wears her heart on her sleeve, cares deeply and is dedicated and loyal in any position and the first to arrive on campus and the last to leave each day,” said Seth Daub, principal of OCPS Academic Center for Excellence, who was the principal of Castle Creek Elementary, and had worked with Johnson from 2012 through 2016.

“As an Exceptional Student Education teacher at Castle Creek, it’s very nice that Dr. Johnson takes the time to not only recognize the high achievers, but also the students who struggle,” said Lisa Schurr.

“She also attends every school event with a camera in hand to capture special moments and memories for families and is like our own personal paparazzi!”

Throughout her tenure at Castle Creek, the school won second place and $3,000 during the OCPS Green Schools Recognition Program during the 2016-17 school year and was one of the honorees who received the 2017 United States Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award.

Castle Creek also has a partnership with East River High where the elementary students can perform in the high school auditorium and receive tutoring during and after school.

“Dr. Johnson is a true example of servant leadership,” said Nikki Campbell, principal of East River High. “Every interaction with her is energetic, loving, positive and full of passion for her students and staff. She also has a love for the fine arts and believes in creativity and celebrating students’ artistic expressions.”

Johnson, a native Orlandoan and OCPS alumna, knew from a young age that she wanted to be a band director and music teacher. Her musical roots began in sixth grade when she learned how to play the clarinet while living in California.

She later played the oboe and was a majorette in the Edgewater High Marching Band. At the University of Florida, she was the captain of the Gator’s flag corps.

During her college internship, she received a call from OCPS about an available assistant band director position at Colonial High School, and the rest is history.

“I was 20 years old and graduated from the University of Florida, moved back home and started my new role, which included working with the flag corps and majorettes during Colonial High’s summer band camp in June 1978,” she said.

She was passionate about directing students in a junior-high band program, so she jumped at the opportunity of working as Liberty Middle’s band director after spending two years at Colonial High.

Her OCPS journey continued as dean and assistant principal at Union Park Middle; and assistant principal at Apopka Middle, Castle Creek Elementary and Legacy Middle.

In retirement, Johnson plans on playing music, downsizing and cleaning out her home and giving back to OCPS by volunteering with its Partners in Education program.
