Restore HOPE with Your Actions
LIVE UNITED Orange County United Way UnitedWayOC.org
Health setbacks. Job loss. Poor credit. Many people in our community are facing layered, difficult issues like these that require access to many health and human services to help get them back on their feet. When you give to United Way you help support the practice of collective impact: nonprofits across our great county working together to truly improve people’s lives and create a stronger Orange County.
Meet OUR neighbor, Christine. Christine Bennett seemed to have it all in high school. The popular blonde served as class president during her junior and senior years and competed on the swim team. Yet, classmates and teachers had no idea that Christine struggled daily with a haunting secret that greatly affected her self-esteem. She had an undiagnosed learning disability, making it difficult for her to learn math. Unexpected challenges continued into adulthood. At age 29, Christine suffered a stroke and had to relearn how to walk, tie shoelaces, and use scissors. She and her husband, the father of her three children, later divorced, and Christine eventually found herself homeless.
empowerment center, SparkPoint OC, is assisting with tax preparations and budgeting. “I could lay my head down at night knowing that I have a place to call home. I have someone who will listen to me. I have somebody who cares,” says Christine of the support she received. Today, Christine works full time as an occupational therapist assistant, lives on her own in Seal Beach, and has been accepted into Cal State Long Beach, where she plans to obtain a bachelor’s degree. She recently joined us for WALK UNITED 2012 and also ran nonstop in a 10-mile run in Huntington Beach. “I’m a whole new person,” says the 51-yearold. “I believe in myself; I didn’t before.”
“I felt like I’d gotten into a ‘perfect storm,’” she says. “But I was determined not to sink, because of my children.” This determination, coupled with the guidance and support of several United Way– funded organizations, changed Christine’s life. Women Helping Women provided business attire and helped polish her résumé. Colette’s Children’s Home provided a temporary place to stay. And United Way’s financial stability
We are proud of the success stories we create TOGETHER. Help us create more by continuing to LIVE and GIVE UNITED. Your contribution to Orange County United Way helps improve the lives of people—people like Christine.
OUR Mission
To improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of Orange County to strengthen OUR community.
TRANSFORM YOUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY
WITH A GIFT TO ORANGE COUNTY UNITED WAY We are all connected. When you touch someone’s life through your support of Orange County United Way’s Community Impact Fund, you create a ripple effect that strengthens OUR whole community. Your donation may help an at-risk student graduate high school. Or give a family the tools and resources needed to get back on the pathway to financial self-sufficiency. Or help individuals with their most basic needs so they don’t have to worry where they will sleep or get their next meal. We invite you to join our movement. Restore HOPE with your actions and help United Way create opportunities for a better life for all.
WHEN YOU GIVE, YOU HELP.
HERE’S HOW: It all starts with
YOU.
YOU HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE
You helped Elizabeth
By funding the Building Blocks for a self-sufficient life
“I have learned a new skill, which has made me employable again. THANK YOU!”
Instead of focusing on one single issue, United Way supports more than 95 programs and three initiatives throughout our community that are dedicated to providing the Building Blocks for a selfsufficient life—Education, Income, and Health—to those who need it the most. This way, hope and help are available whether it’s needed to provide a head start to a preschool-age student, teach new job skills to someone out of work, or make sure someone has access to basic medical care. (See page 9 for a list of our partner agencies.)
YOU HELP LOCAL PEOPLE 1 out of 18 people helped This is the key: When you give to Orange County United Way, you help people. In fact, your gift helped 1 out of 18 people in our community last year. That’s 164,000 of OUR neighbors, coworkers, and friends whose lives were improved through your gifts to Orange County United Way. And when we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of OUR entire community.
Laid off and battling health problems, Elizabeth was having a hard time finding her way back on the path to self-sufficiency, but your support got her access to the tools she needed to get back on her feet.
PLEASE, KEEP HELPING Your support really matters. It matters to ELIZABETH and so many others in our community. To them, your gift made the difference. It restored their hope. It was life-altering. It gave them the courage to overcome obstacles that once seemed unbeatable.
YOU HELP OUR COMMUNITY Your gift to Orange County United Way remains the most effective and efficient way to help strengthen the entire community. When you make a donation, your money stays in our community to help meet the needs as varied as the people who have them. This means that from northern Brea to the heart of Santa Ana, to the shores of San Clemente, and everywhere in between, your generosity helps make OUR community a better place for all of us to live and work.

LIVE UNITED is an invitation to become part of the change we want to see in our community. It is knowing that together, UNITED, we can accomplish more than any single group or individual can on their own. When you give to Orange County United Way, we invest your dollars in:
Education
Income
HelpING children and youth reach their potential
PromotING financial stability and independence
GivING more children a chance at a brighter future
Helping more children, families, and individuals break the cycle of poverty
We know that parents want their children to be safe, healthy, educated, and successful. We also know that a child’s success today is an investment in OUR community’s future. That’s why United Way develops and invests in programs and initiatives that support children from the time they are born through the time they graduate high school.
When given the opportunity, people want to provide for their families and secure their financial future. With United Way, you can help low-income individuals and families and those hit by the economic downturn gain the knowledge and tools needed to get back on their feet and onto the path of financial self-sufficiency.

In 2011, through your generosity:
9,000 students were inspired to pursue STEM-related careers through hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math learning opportunities.
3,800 at-risk children ages 0-5 got a head start in life, receiving the cognitive and social development building blocks needed to succeed in kindergarten.
1,600 at-risk students received the educational support needed to motivate them to obtain their high school diplomas and continue on to college with a clear career path, through Orange County United Way’s Education Initiative, Destination Graduation.
3,600 OC residents received valuable lessons in financial literacy, so they could earn more, keep more, and save more.
1,200 job seekers benefited from skills training so they were able to compete and re-enter the workforce.
13,000+ residents gained access to skills and services that put them on the path to financial stability, including free tax filing and eligible tax credits (Earn It. Keep It. Save It.), comprehensive financial literacy education, and access to low-cost mainstream banking services (Bank on Orange County), through Orange County United Way’s Income Initiative, Banking on the Future.
Health Supporting healthy lives
Making sure people have access to basic needS services, which are essential to remaining self-sufficient We know that people don’t want to rely on emergency food or be homeless or sick. However, each day tens of thousands of people in Orange County lack the basic needs that many of us take for granted, including a place to call home or enough food to eat. In 2011, through your generosity:
50,000 people received healthy and nutritious meals through our partnerships with food banks and pantries, helping them to remain fortified, focused, and full of hope.
7,000 of our displaced neighbors received emergency/transitional shelter, allowing families to remain together and individuals to recover from unexpected life crisis.
8,000+ children received quality dental care, putting a smile on everyone’s face.
United Way is working to strengthen access to quality education for youth in our community, like Matthew.
Your gift can do so much. Make yours today. When you support Orange County United Way at any level, you ensure that your dollars improve lives and help our community thrive. Building Agency Capacity, Building a Better Orange County
UNITED WAY Partner Agencies
United to Bring Positive Change to OUR community We agree that it takes a village to raise a child. It also takes a village to strengthen a community … to make sure everyone has equal access to the Building Blocks for self-sufficiency: Education, Income, and Health. To do this we recruit the people and organizations from all across the community who bring the passion, expertise, and resources needed to get things done. When you give to Orange County United Way, you make it possible for our following 90 partner agencies, as well as our Banking on the Future, Destination Graduation, and Building United initiatives, to advance the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all, which in turn means a stronger Orange County.
“As a funded partner agency of United Way, Casa Youth Shelter is directly impacted by OCUW’s financial support, enabling our shelter to continue providing a safe haven for homeless and abused youth. Being a part of the United Way network also provides us access to a myriad of resources such as essential capacitybuilding workshops. For example, United Way’s 3-part Social Media Workshop Series provided targeted, practical advice from industry experts in online marketing that were easy to implement and maintain. Thanks to United Way, we know we’re reaching more youth in crisis and sharing more information with our social media savvy supporters in the community. Thank you, United Way!”
Sarah Joung Fund Development Director Casa Youth Shelter
In addition to supporting these programs with three-year grants (2011-2013), United Way also provides: CAPACITY BUILDING training and resources designed to develop the business and leadership capacity of our partners, and the nonprofit sector as a whole, by building:
Program Capacity
Technical Capacity
Leadership Capacity
Collaborations
Funding Resources
United Way’s Community Investment Team members also support, monitor, and identify additional resources available to our partner agencies so they can concentrate on delivering outstanding programs. United Way staff members conduct annual agency site visits and biannual reviews. This careful monitoring of program results allows us to provide proactive support to our agency partners, identifying obstacles and providing solutions to ensure strong program results and services to the community.
