OPENWORKSBMORE.COM Open Works is a community-facing makerspace and nonprofit dedicated to making tools, technology, and knowledge accessible to all. Before opening their doors in September, Open Works reached out to us for help on their website. Through our discovery process, it became evident that user experience and clarity would be essential to this project, including content like class signup forms and an event calendar. Our design team developed a simple website with easy-to-use navigation so community members of all generations can access it.

Journeys to Scale Report

LOOKBOOK 2016

UNICEF and the Center for Education Innovations (CEI) partnered with us to create a report to accompany the Finalists of the Innovations in Education Initiative. The report included five global—and complex—programs aimed at improving education. By applying strategic design thinking, our team organized these in a cohesive way. Custom infographics, unique illustrations and a bold color palette made it easier for readers to digest the content while better understanding UNCIEF’s and CEI’s mission. The report’s success has led to frequent reprints, and readers all over the world use it to improve their educational methodologies.

As a truly unique project, our team created a hand-drawn, framed poster commemorating Rich Whitney’s career, a T.Rowe Price employee for more than thirty years. Rich’s coworkers wanted to honor his retirement with a unique and original gift, so our design team infused his personality traits and his love of Colorado with his legacy at T.Rowe to create a mountain range that tracks Rich’s development throughout his life and career. He was left with a personalized gift, and T.Rowe Price now has a one-of-a-kind way to commemorate future retirees.

Digital Harmonic Website Development

LOOKBOOK 2016

DIGITALHARMONIC.COM Legendary guitar maker Paul Reed Smith teamed up with scientists and physicians to develop a cutting-edge technology for image and signal analysis. The new company, Digital Harmonic, is a result of a decade of research combining Smith’s late father’s understanding of precision mathematics and Smith’s understanding of sound and harmonics from guitar making. Digital Harmonic reached out to Orange Element for a website that would attract investors and introduce the new technology to the public. With such a technologicallyadvanced topic, our team was challenged with simplifying this complex concept for all audiences to understand its wide range of applications in the healthcare, military, and corporate industries. The final website is clear and straightforward: it walks viewers through the technology with examples, and Digital Harmonic is reaping the reward of more investors and patents.

MedStar Health wanted a new way to reach out to physicians in the Central Maryland region, educating them about subjects pertinent to their professional practice and personal health. MedStar reached out to the Orange Element team for a magazine that could collectively represent three patient care advances: cancer treatment, heart health, and orthopedics. The magazine would be published in only 16 pages, so designing and organizing this important health information was challenging, especially when collecting content and approvals from three different medical departments. However, our organizational method and name “MedStar Connect Magazine” proved successful, connecting all employees in the large network of MedStar Health facilities. We’re about to kick off the second issue.

AIGA Design Week Event Branding

BALTIMORE.AIGA.ORG/DESIGN-WEEK/ AIGA Baltimore brings the design community together and advances design as a professional craft and vital cultural force. Each year, the Baltimore chapter chooses a local branding agency to create a look and feel for Design Week, a weeklong series of educational events celebrating design in Baltimore. For their 5th Design Week, they chose Orange Element to develop its event branding and marketing collateral. We put our creativity to the test to design a unique brand that could extend from print and web into interactive and in-person activities. With custom, hand-drawn community icons like Edgar Allen Poe and the Patterson Park pagoda, the final product was an easily recognizable identity on AIGA Baltimore’s channels, promoting excitement within the Baltimore design community.

A year after their successful Poverty is Sexist launch, global nonprofit ONE sought our help to extend the campaign’s identity and reach across multiple channels—from print to online communications. We developed brand guidelines and campaign collateral that represented the personality of the women affected by poverty worldwide, preserving ONE’s mission while improving the story’s impact and readability. These updated style guidelines and use case examples translated well onto online platforms like social media, allowing ONE to reach a wider audience.

Johns Hopkins Nursing

Publication Design

LOOKBOOK 2016

Johns Hopkins Nursing reached out to us again to create their 2016 biennial report. The nursing department’s goal for this publication is to communicate their strategic priorities, their 2-year plans, and their future goals in the hospital. We were tasked with organizing various departments’ content in an even hierarchy, which also meant featuring multiple photos on the cover and other spreads to include diversity and the wide range of work. The result was a dynamic system that allowed us to incorporate different angles for unique photos, maintaining equal representation of every nursing unit.

The Auchentoroly Terrace is a walkable neighborhood that sits along the west side of Druid Hill Park in the Baltimore area. The Parks and People Foundation asked Orange Element for help creating the signage, donor wall and other wayfinding materials to help tell the history and meaning of the area. During development, we had to keep in mind the materials needed to withstand natural elements like weather, as well as man-made factors like vandalism. Our solution was an ancient process called shou sugi ban that involves charring the wood to protect it from rotting, fading, and bugs. In addition to the fabrication process, we chose materials that deemed appropriate to sit in a natural environment without intruding on visitors’ experience.
