Master Classes

Last fall, Orange Lutheran’s Performing Arts Academy welcomed Grammy Award-winning and two-time Academy Award-nominated songwriter Siedah Garrett, who taught a Master Class exclusively for Academy students.

Master Classes combine interactive learning, experiential activities, personal assessments, and techniques to equip young artists. Visits from industry professionals offer OLu students an intimate perspective of the industry and the possibilities within their craft.

Best known for co-writing Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” from his chart-topping 1987 album Bad, Garrett’s career has spanned decades. She has worked with many of the greatest artists and producers of all-time, including Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Earth Wind & Fire, and Quincy Jones. Garrett’s lyrics “If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself, and then make a change,” continue to inspire young voices around the globe.

Garrett spoke with OLu students about the craft of songwriting and the disciplines needed for a career in the arts, then worked with small groups on vocal and performance technique. She finished the evening with an emotional performance of “Man in the Mirror.”
