From statues to sculptures, mosaics and murals, you’ll find one-of-a-kind art installations all over the city of Austin. Take a downtown walking tour or see how many pieces of art you can find on Congress Avenue this summer. You may easily recognize Austin’s most iconic pieces of art in public places, but can you find the most obscure? Download this brochure, which has a listing of Austin Art in Public Places with walking tours and tips on where to find these hidden gems.
WATCH THE BATS EMERGE AT DUSK Downtown Austin
Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, Austin Every summer night, hundreds of people gather to see the world’s largest urban bat colony emerge from under the Congress Avenue Bridge in downtown Austin. With up to 1.5 million bats spiraling into the summer skies, this population is considered the largest urban bat colony in North America. Call the Bat Hotline for emergence times: (512) 327-9721, x 3. You have a few options on how to be a part of this natural spectacle: SIT ON THE LAWN OR STAND ON THE BRIDGE. The easiest thing to do is to pack a picnic and head down to the Statesman’s Bat Observation Center in the
northwest corner of the parking lot at least an hour before dusk. Street parking is available nearby, and there are several parking lots, as well, which are a bit of a longer walk. Signs will tell you more about the bats, and you’ll be surrounded by many other families doing the same thing. If you have older kids who don’t mind standing for longer periods of time, you can find a spot on the southeastern part of the bridge about an hour before dusk. The best part is that these options are both free! TAKE A BOAT TOUR. Capital Cruises and Lone Star
Riverboat both offer public sightseeing cruises, which are about an hour in length and which cost $10 per adult and $7–$8 for kids. Departure times vary slightly, depending on what time of year it is, and you do need to arrive a bit in advance. Compared to hanging out on the ground, this is a little more comfortable, and you can usually snack on the boats while you listen to the guide tell you more about different spots along Lady Bird Lake. If you have kids who have a hard time sitting still or who have a daredevil streak, this option might be too stressful to be worthwhile. CANOE OR KAYAK TO THE BRIDGE. If you have your own canoe or kayak, you can get up close and personal with the bats, along with anyone else who has the same idea. Several vendors rent canoes, kayaks and paddleboards near the bridge. You can also book a bat tour with the Texas River School, which hosts a monthly Moonlight Bat Float, complete with music from local musicians, and which benefits the nonprofit’s work to take at-risk kids for adventures on the water. Live Love Paddle also hosts bat tours. ENJOY THE VIEW WHILE YOU EAT. The north side of Lady Bird Lake has several hotels that claim to have the best bat watching with restaurants. One casual option is Alta’s Cafe, which is located atop the Waller Creek Boathouse. There are a few piers along the north side of the Lake which also offer a great vantage point to see the bats.
Round Rock Nearly half a million bats emerge from a spot close to the intersection of IH-35 and McNeil. Head to 601 N. IH-35 Frontage Road in Round Rock with your blankets and something to cover you in case of any guano falling from the sky. Free parking is located nearby.
Bracken Cave Austin may have the largest urban bat colony, but Bracken Cave, located half an hour northwest of San Antonio, is the location of the largest bat colony and one of the largest concentration of mammals on Earth. In 2014, the cave and land surrounding the cave came under the management of Bat
Conservation International. Members have the opportunity to visit the cave certain times each year and the public can sign up for a few nights (note that 2016 is already full).
Eckert James River Bat Cave The Nature Conservancy manages the Eckert Cave, which is about 16 miles from Mason, Texas. Tours run Thursday–Sunday from mid-May until early October. Some sunrise viewings of the bats returning from their nocturnal hunts are also offered.

Dixit is great for all ages, with picture-only cards to get those creative juices flowing and a rule set that can be molded to fit your group.

STAR GAZE The big Texas skies and summer breeze beckons you to turn your attention to the sky to gaze at the stars! Living in the city can mean seeing fewer stars, so we’ve listed some events and locations that will make star gazing amazing.
Austin Astronomical Society: Austin Under the Stars
St. Stephen’s School, 6500 St. Stephen’s Dr., Austin, (512) 327-1213 Austin Under the Stars is an annual special event that offers a full experience of astronomical observation, including safe solar viewing. The Austin Astronomical Society and St. Stephen’s Episcopal School invite the public to join local astronomers who will be viewing our closest stellar neighbor, the sun, in daytime skies. They will be using solar telescopes as well as several other telescopes with special protective filters. As the sun slips below the horizon, our attention will then turn to the celestial wonders in the night skies. Austin Under the Stars attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and water and/or refreshments as well as telescopes and/or binoculars. Pets and smoking are not permitted on the observing field; nor are aerosol insect repellent and flash photography. The use of white light flashlights on the field is discouraged. “Astronomy-friendly” flashlights can be made easily by placing a square of red trans-
parent film, available at any hobby shop, over the lens. Even a couple of layers of red tissue paper fitted over the end of a flashlight works well when sealed with tape or a rubber band. This year, the event will be Saturday, July 23, 3-10 p.m.
Canyon of the Eagles
16942 RR 2341, Burnet, (512) 334-2070 Canyon of the Eagles is a resort in the Texas Hill Country that is located off Lake Buchanan. Guests at the resort have free access to the Eagle Eye Observatory, a high-tech telescope operated by the Austin Astronomical Society. The observatory is operated several nights a week, weather permitting. Not a guest at the resort? The public is invited to monthly Star Parties for a fun learning experience that is hosted by the AAS and features additional astronomical equipment from the society’s private collection. Study the night sky with the help of the experts as they take you on a fascinating journey into the history and seasons of the stars and planets. How many constellations can you spot? The show kicks off at sundown, so don’t be late! June 25, July 30, August 13 are public nights in 2016.
Enchanted Rock Star Party
Enchanted Rock State Park, Cul-de-sac near Summit Trail, Fredericksburg, (830) 685-3636 Join Enchanted Rock Staff and members of the Hill Country Astronomers for a night of Stargazing. If you would like to view the sun through a solar viewer before it sets in the evening, plan to arrive around 5:30 pm. If you are coming out for the Star Party, you will need to arrive before 7 pm, as parking will be restricted to areas further away from the telescopes. If you have a flashlight with “red light’ capabilities, we suggest using them, as white light flashlights can ruin your night vision. Less light is always better! Cost is $7 per person 13+, 12 and under free. What to bring: Water, a chair and a snack. There will be plenty of scopes for the public to view from but these events are always BYOT (Bring Your Own Telescope) if you would like to share and meet
some other astronomers of young and old. Friday, July 8, is the date for this year’s party.

Roy and Ann Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail and Boardwalk 800 W. Riverside Dr., Austin, (512) 974-6700
The Boardwalk can be accessed at several points — the northeast corner of the Statesman parking lot, off the Riverside Dr. sidewalk at Blunn Creek, from the northeast corner of the Riverside and IH-35 intersection and at International Shores Park, 1820 S. Lakeshore Blvd. Many people start at the pedestrian bridge near Austin High, where there is a parking lot. The trail can be crowded, so you need to make sure kids and bikes stay in a single file line in spots. The boardwalk can be less crowded, and you can also park near Festival Beach (if there are events in the area, parking may be tied up).
Shoal Creek Greenbelt
Pease Park access, 1100 Kingsbury St., Austin, (512) 9746700 There are 6.82 total miles and plenty of good shade from canopies of old oak trees on this centrally located trail. Built in the early 1960s, the trail is the city’s oldest and its surface varies from concrete to crushed gravel and compacted dirt. Along the way, the trail passes through Pease Park (cool down at the splash pad!) and Duncan Park, offering natural beauty and abundant recreational opportunities. A highlight of the journey is passage through a small rocky canyon near the trail’s northern end. Click here for a map of the mountain bike trail.
Southern Walnut Creek Trail
5200 Bolm Rd., Austin, (512) 974-6700 Encompassing more than 7.3 miles of multi-use trail running by trees, flatland, soft hills and water, Southern Walnut Creek Trail consists of 10-foot wide concrete paths designed to accommodate a variety of users. This beautiful nature-filled trail extends from Govalle Park to the Walnut Creek Sports Park at Johnny Morris Rd. and Daffan Ln. and includes five bridges, culverts, signs and benches offering a breath-taking view at every turn. The trailheads are located at Johnny Morris Rd. and Govalle Park.
Veloway
4900 La Cross Ave., Austin, (512) 974-6700 This 23’ wide, 3.1 mile (5K) long bicycle tract traverses natural terrain and is strictly for bikes and inline skates. Foot traffic is prohibited. Read more about the Veloway by clicking here.
Trail began as a vision in 1999 to create the first regional trail system in Central Texas. After years of strategic land acquisition and planning, the first 6-mile segment is now open and the VCT is on its way to becoming the longest trail of its kind in Central Texas. Once complete, the 30-mile trail will provide a unique recreational experience as it passes through the urban wildlands of the Barton Creek Wilderness Park, the City of Sunset Valley, and eventually into Hays County. Note: Some portions of the trail are recommended for experienced mountain bikers only due to uneven and rocky surface, steep slopes, and numerous dry creek crossings which could periodically be flooded.
Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park
12138 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, (512) 974-6700 This popular north Austin park has an off-leash dog area, 5.32 miles of trails for mountain biking and hiking, a playground, picnic tables, a swimming pool and more.

Congress Avenue Kayaks
74 Trinity St., Austin, (512) 809-8916 Located next to the Four Seasons Hotel on the north side of Lady Bird Lake is the Waller Creek Boathouse, which is a collaboration between the City of Austin and the Austin Rowing Club. One- and two-person kayaks, as well as SUPs (stand-up paddling, for those ages 16 and older alone and 13 and up if with an adult) are available for rental by the hour or half-day. Cash and credit cards are accepted, but you must leave a valid driver license while you are out. Keep in mind that parking can be limited in that part of downtown. Zilker Park Boat Rentals
2101 Andrew Zilker Rd., Austin, (512) 478-3852 Located just downstream from Barton Springs is the Zilker Park Boat Rentals, which rents canoes, kayaks and stand up paddleboards (perhaps, better known as SUPs) by the hour or day (if you hope to stay out a few hours and wrap up your trip by noon, you can use this coupon). Rentals are by cash only, you need to leave a photo ID while your boat is out. Some of the benefits in starting from this spot are that you can combine a canoeing outing with some playtime at Zilker Park; you can get the chance to see both sides of the shoreline (and the wildlife) as you paddle out to Lady Bird Lake; you will pass by Lou Neff Point, where there are nearly always ducks to feed and you get a chance to begin your journey in the relatively calm waters before going out into the huge expanse that is Lady Bird Lake, complete with a current and lots of other folks doing the same thing. On busy weekends, you may find the area downstream of Barton Springs can get pretty crowded too. If you head out on a weekend between March and November, you’ll need to bring along a few dollars to pay for parking at Zilker (and keep in mind there is additional parking east of the main playground, if you want to minimize your walking time. Just cross the Zilker Zephyr track and follow the signs down the stairs to the boat rental.)
