GALAXY WORDS NEKITA ROBERTS ILLUSTRATION JACLYN ROBERTS
She’s the star gazing, pet pampering, artist, poet and fashion detective of the Sunshine Coast. With a sketch pad in her satchel and camera around her neck, she’s off to her casual job walking dogs. Always gorgeous in tights and canvas shoes, boyfriend tee and thick side braid, Galaxy is an ordinary girl with a really cool name. Hank the labrador, her favourite pooch, seems to prance along, racing ahead to their spot high on the dunes. From beneath the pandanus palm she shoots some frames. Deep blue waves curl in the off shore breeze. The natural beauty of the coastline warms her soul. Over at the cafe, steam is dancing on coffees. With a skinny latte and dark shades, just like any good detective, she sits with Hank and sketches. There are hipsters with beards and slouchy beanies, green juices, organic breakfasts and all the beautiful people. Princess the poodle and a pomeranian named Keith are her final stop. Both are clearly at the forefront of puppy couture and “just need a little skip around the block”. After this exercise in patience, a complex combination of treats and medications are administered. This is followed by some tentative pats and more excitable yapping. Galaxy heads home to splash colour on her pages, pen her thoughts and work on pieces for the next exhibition. She thinks about her day. The Coast feels like an old friend, her favourite t-shirt, her old beach track. She wanders home daydreaming, writing poetry in her head. imaginetheroad.com Page 7

CATEYE SUNNIES
Cateye sunnies are the most popular sunny trends happening this summer and the great thing is that they suit most face shapes. The trick is finding the perfect pair that suits your personality. Luckily there are heaps of different shapes and colours to choose from and don't be worried if you're on a budget either, there's a great range of resonably priced versions in stores like Sportsgirl and CottonOn. If you're unsure about this trend maybe buy a cheaper pair before investing in a designer brand that can set you back around $500. Nicole Richie has always loved oversized cat-eye sunglasses and Olivia Palermo is often seen sporting the more classic style. No matter what shape and style you decide on, they will add a timeless look to any outfit.

DURRRNNUN DURRRNUNN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN……… YOU FOLLOWING? SWIMWEAR THAT YOU WON’T GET CAUGHT OUT IN…! WORDS JO HALL
My first and most important tip this summer before you head to the swimwear shops and the bright, confronting lights of a change room , is to gift yourself with a ‘tan in a can’. Not to mention a good dousing in body lotion! Trust me ladies, you’ll sashay excitedly into that confined wall to wall mirrored space with an assortment of styles to try and suddenly it becomes all about the lily shade of your legs and where on earth the reptile came from that is now staring back at you. You might even mumble a “geeze, did I forget my eye wrinkle cream last night?” or “I must start that diet tomorrow”. Next minute you’ll be throwing back the sales assistant the seven pairs of swimmers that were possible beach envy finalists , whilst clambering for your phone to call the beauty salon as you hastily make an exit.. When choosing swimwear you want to draw the eyes to the most flattering part of your body. To hide areas use dark, solid colour. Black will downplay your least favourite area. No, you cannot wear a wetsuit. Then to highlight areas, use bright colours or patterns. High cut bottoms make legs look longer. String bikinis are sexy, boho and make way for a great tan, but have you ever worn them in rough surf? Now, triangle tops, I’ve seen way too many gals pop up from a dumping wave and wonder if their tops, have in fact, gone to the Bermuda Triangle. Please be careful! Boyshorts are for the skinny minnies. They will make you look wider, so unless you want to match them up with a large bust and create a more hour glass figure, I would steer clear. High waisted pants are great for hiding a waist plus they’re in fashion. Tick. Bandeau tops makes your bust seem bigger so if this is the look you’re after, add a patterned print and some ruffles and va va va voom! Big busts look flattering in swimwear that’s cut straight across, with wide set straps and some underwire to minimize and support. If you have the courage, a plunging v neck one piece can also look favourable. Halter neck styles narrow shoulders. Actually, they just make all shoulders look good! Possibly squash your assets in the meantime though. If all else fails, just like a LBD - a well cut, black one piece with some fancy back ties or detail will essentially hide your waist and do justice and with that said I’ll have another round of Pina Colada’s and a side of fries please. Postscript. Remember when you were a seemingly shameless child and your crotch would fill with sand after a day frolicking in the ocean’s whitewash and building sand castles on the shoreline? You would wander back up to your parent’s umbrella towing a swinging sack of sand between your legs? The ‘lollie bag’, my sister’s and I called it. Well, make sure the lining in the crotch of your bikini bottoms is stitched down and not left open as this will prevent this little mishap of manhood. Page 18

WORDS JO HALL
I’m not ashamed to admit that I love all things fashion. I pour frantically and enviously over fashion mags, crazily circling items for my latest wish list. I flick straight to the social pages of newspapers and gossip mags in search of the latest fashionistas and I love to take a sneaky peak around the coffee shop to see what everyone is wearing. I’m the first to notice a new pair of kicks on a friend and I even know when they’re wearing a new lippie! Obsessive? Hell yes!! So, with summer creeping up on us faster than a wedgie down a waterslide, I just had to find out what swimwear styles would be gracing our beautiful beaches this Christmas. MONOCHROME – Basic black, flat white or black with white trim. One piece styles are huge, as are high waisted pants. ATHLETIC LOOK – Bold colours, mesh panels, sports bra and halter style tops, zips and neoprene (scuba diving never looked so cool!). GEOMETRIC PATTERNS Neon colour palettes, chevron patterns in nautical navy or red, and classic black and white prints.

CHURCH IN I’VE DRIVEN PAST THE OLD INA MANY TIMES. THE MAIN STREET OF YAND As a kid with my brothers and sister in the back of the car, we’d take this road. It was the old Bruce Highway and the only way to get to Brisbane for the Christmas holidays. Dad would say, “This is Yandina kids”. Strange to think that every truck on the eastern coast run would roll on through our little country town. Now I drive past the church almost daily. The produce store is next door and it’s nice to notice the old girl just standing there quietly when we go to get the chook food. I poked my head in once. It was one of those rare days when the doors where open. Shag pile carpet and that smell that seems to come with it were my first observations. The walls were old and weary and I’m sure would tell stories of love and sorrow if only they could speak. It was not until recently that new life was breathed into the old church. In the lead up to the grand opening two young women and their entourage of loving and willing but slightly apprehensive family and friends worked diligently to complete the makeover. Kate Dyce is the 23-year-old, blue eyed blonde often seen in her work boots and sometimes swinging a hammer; a far cry I’m sure from her days spent in New York on her world travels. After adding a hardwood timber casement window and sign to the front of the church Lawn Espresso was born. When I step inside I am greeted by Suzy Mackinnon. The cool, easy charm of the 24-year-old former fashion student and entrepreneur is immediately apparent. The church is fresh and white with wide polished floorboards. There is too much vintage perfection here to take in at a glance but it’s obvious that the racks are filled with immaculately presented vintage dresses and beautiful fabrics. Suzy took great inspiration from a trip to Melbourne with its beautiful old buildings and awesome shops. ”Friends always said I was a hoarder.” She is happy to agree with them and used to visit markets buying anything from a vintage bag to an old crate, somehow jamming it all into her hatchback. She saw a niche market and a need for more great coffee in the growing town.
“Yandina has a charm about it and a real diversity. I wanted to make something of my own and the idea just grew.” The girls are good mates and their businesses compliment each other so well. The old church is especially popular on a Saturday morning when the the market crowd is in town. There is a young, fresh feel in the place and these girls are really turning their dreams into a reality here. Whether you’re chasing inspiration, a gorgeous dress, collectable decor or a great coffee, head into Collective House and Lawn Espresso for the perfect blend of new and old. Page 33

GIVINGBACKISThe New Black BUYING ETHICALLY JUST SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD THING TO DO, RIGHT?
Let’s be honest, most of us question whether it’s the cool thing to do. The idea of exchanging design edge and individuality for tribal and tie dye may be enough to make you break into a minor sweat. Michelle Doran, owner of gutsy little web store Perch & Pantry is determined to prove that an ethical home & lifestyle can be fresh, simple & on–trend whilst remaining morally & environmentally sensitive. “When sourcing ethical products it’s about understanding many elements: responsible manufacturing, ecology & sustainability, the professional conduct of the company & a general respect for human dignity.” “……we have just got to be more conscious about what we are buying and consider how our dollars are benefiting the makers & creators at the beginning of the chain” Michelle has combined her passion for interiors and fashion with a strong desire to give back. The result is a beautiful, unique & ethical collection of home, accessories & gift items from Australia and around the globe. The name may be quaint, but Michelle was quick to point out that it has a powerful message! ‘Perch represents the material items we purchase for our homes, and by shopping with a social conscious we are investing in the Artisan & empowering them to stock their Pantry.”
With every company carefully researched, Perch and Pantry delivers some exciting products which carry a great little story. P & P’s latest venture is with cause related US Fashion Company: Half United who give half of all sales profits back to feeding hunger around the globe. Their signature accessory the “Fighting hunger” bullet pendant is created from spent casings otherwise destined for a journey to ammunition companies who use them to create new bullets. Adorned with zesty neons, leather & even glitter, these ridiculously cool accessories have been transformed from a dangerous weapon to one that can change lives. WOULD YOU ACTUALLY BLEACH YOUR EYEBROWS SO THEY LOOKED BARELY THERE? THE FOLLOWING MAKEUP TRENDS ARE SURE TO CAUSE CONTROVERSY AMONGST YOUR FRIENDS!
BL E ACHED B R OW S
D E F I N E D B ROWS
Oh dear. This is scary and probably the most dramatic of the trends. While I HAVE lightened my brows before, I haven’t ever bleached them back to my birth skin colour. This is for serious fashionistas with no fear and ones who can rock an Indian headdress at their local café for breakfast and not bat an eyelid. I do, however strange it seems, know how to make brows disappear with makeup and dry soap, but you’ll need to email me for further info on that Boy George period of my life. RE D L IP S Red lips always look amazing in photographs but have you ever applied your new shade of ‘glam’ to suddenly leap back from the mirror by the joker smile creepily staring back at you? If you don’t find the right shade of red, your teeth can appear yellow. if you don’t find the right texture, you can have it smeared all over your teeth and bleeding from your lip line before you sip on your first drink. Don’t let this turn you off though! Blue based reds can actually make your teeth look whiter and prepping is the key. Sponge some foundation over your lips first, then apply lipstick. Apply lip liner last, to even out any edges or mistakes. Peel a tissue apart and hold one half over your mouth while you press a dusting of translucent powder over your lips. Peel tissue off and apply one more coat of lipstick and you’re ready to wow.
For those of you old enough – think Brooke Shields circa 1980. Or those of you young enough – Cara Delevigne circa, now! While this trend usually means no maintenance, you still need to brush your brows with a spritz of hairspray and use a little bit of eyebrow pencil to fill in patchy areas and keep your brows looking even and full. This trend can sometimes cause eye contact failure when you are trying to talk to someone seriously, with a couple of caterpilla’s crawling across their forehead. CAT W I N G EYEL INER Can you really rock those wings down to the local corner store in daylight? Eyeliner wings are usually seen as a staple on the red carpet or catwalk but now it seems a cool girl go-to look. There are celebrities who wear them every day in some form. Just look at Gwen Stefani or Kate Moss. For a casual vibe they don’t need to be worn with any other makeup other than mascara and lip balm, which is obviously a bonus. So next time you have bills to pay at the post office, glide some wings on and bat your lids away. Have fun playing

PERFECT WORDS JAYDE BIELBY
The summer months are here, and so is that white glow from your skin that you have gained over winter. It is time to bring out those shorts, and pair them with the most perfectly tanned legs you could imagine. Here they are, our absolute top 6 tips to ensure your tan is perfectly gorgeous for as long as possible....
FO LLO W TH ES E SIM PL E ST EP S.. . 4. Make sure you don’t rub in your gradual or self-tan. Gentle smoothing is all you need, and then you can let the product go to work. Rubbing may make the finish uneven and you could end up looking like a spotty oompa loompa.
1. When you’re tanning give yourself a good all-over polish to get rid of dry and flaky skin, then apply plenty of moisturiser the night before to get your skin as silky as possible. The most common cause of a patchy tan is dry skin, so it’s crucial to moisturise problem areas (wrists and hands, elbows, knees, ankles and feet) immediately prior to self-tan application. 2. Keep palms tan-free – try using latex gloves or applicator mitt when applying. Or if all else fails give those hands a good scrub as soon as you have finished.
5. Your tan won’t get deeper the longer you leave it – once it’s been on for the required amount of time (check the pack) it will have given you the naturallooking golden colour you’re after. For a deeper tan you should re-apply on successive days; 2-3 days in a row will give you a really deep, rich bronze tan.
3. When you’re applying your tan, make sure you’re covered all over. Don’t worry if you go over the same area twice – the tan will only be patchy if you miss a bit, not if you double up.
6. When you’ve applied your tan you should wear loose, dark clothing and avoid tight-fitting underwear as anything that’s pressing on the skin may make the results a bit patchy.

HANDSUp
So much effort goes into looking after the skin on our face but our hands are exposed to the elements just as much – if not more. What is worse is that the skin on our hands is much thinner than on the face and they have less oil glands, so they are damaged more easily. That is why we have the saying “you can tell a woman’s age by her hands”.
Before retiring to bed each night you should massage in a hand cream and then cover your hands with cotton gloves. Remember you should also wear gloves when washing up, cleaning, gardening etc. as this protects your hands from chemicals and detergents.
ORBIT tips
Remember to exfoliate your hands once a week – you can use a face exfoliator to get the best results as they are very gentle on the skin. Remember to moisturize the hands after exfoliating. Moisturizing the hands each morning is also a good idea.

With the salt, sun and sand that comes with long summer days on the beach, now is a better time than ever to get your mane game on. CLEAN IT AND GLEAM Know your hair type. We tend to reach out for products on special or brands we’ve used forever, but maybe it’s time for a summer clean out. Dry and flakey hair will benefit from extra moisture while coloured hair will need hue protectant formulas. *Tip - don’t feel like washing? Spray some dry shampoo to suck up any oil. This product
will be your new best friend. Make sure you pick the can specified for your colour hair. If you’re a brunette and you use the normal dry shampoo you’ll have some nasty looking grey bits - nobody wants that! MAKE TIME FOR MASKS Summer weather can suck the moisture out of our luscious locks and leave them looking a little dull and dry. Keep a good treatment mask handy to maintain your glow. Try using some organic coconut oil and leave it in overnight for a silky soft look the next day. SUPER STYLIN’
Put in the effort while your hair is damp and enjoy a professional finish that will last all day (or night for the party animals). If you’re after a little volume you’ll need to style with heat and a round brush for extra bounce. Use a killer curler for some extra waves. Remember to spritz on some heat protectant before blow drying, straightening or curling to avoid split ends and dry lengths. *Tip - throw your upside down and give a light spray with some salt spray for that fresh summer tassled hair look. Comb through gently to erase any starchy-ness.
Page 45
LAST THE DISTANCE Use setting sprays, frizz control and sculpting powder to cement the look. Be careful not to go too full on with setting products, nobody like hair that replicates straw. MAE TIME FOR MASKS TAKE IT TO TOWN! Now you should be ready to hit the down and have confidence in your hair. You’ll not only have silky soft strands, but killer volume, perfect waves and a fresh, effortless look.
*Tip - Always, and I mean ALWAYS carry a small brush and some dry shampoo in your bag. If your hair looks good - you look good!

STRUGGLING TO MAKE YOUR HOME MANI LAST? HERE ARE SOME PRO TIPS…
TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR NAILS HEALTHY.....
STEP 1: Gently push back your cuticles using a cuticle pusher (available at any chemist). STEP 2: Shape your nails so all are neat and even using a fine emery board. STEP 3: If your nails are rough or bumpy lightly buff the top of nail with a 3-way buffer. STEP 4: Wipe over the nails to remove oils and using a cotton makeup remover pad with acetone-based polish remover (this will help your polish last longer). STEP 5: Paint all 10 nails with a thin coat of clear base coat or nail strengthener (prevents or limits staining). Allow to dry for 1 minute. STEP 6: Paint all 10 nails with thin coat of nail colour. Allow to dry for 1 minute. STEP 7: Paint all 10 nails with second thin coat of nail colour. Allow to dry for 1 minute. STEP 8: Do any nail art you may like now and allow to dry completely. STEP 9: Paint all 10 nails with a clear Top Coat. Allow to dry. STEP 10: Apply nail and cuticle oil carefully to prevent smudging.
TIP 1: Just like our skin and hair our nails need to be conditioned and nourished. Use: a quality Nail and Cuticle oil daily (Famous Names Dadi Oil and CND Solar Oil are our fave). How: Apply sparingly by brush to each cuticle (area of skin above nail) and massage into surrounding skin and nail…. This also will extend the wear of your polish, gel polish or enhancements. TIP 2: Always have your nails covered. Why? Covering your nails with a nail polish, gel polish or enhancement seals in the natural oils of the nail and protects the nails from the harsh elements our hands are exposed to daily. TIP 3: Use an acetone-based nail polish remover. But, that sounds harsh and drying? It is the fastest way to remove your polish, which means less exposure, less scrubbing and less residue left behind…. and you are replacing any oils by using your quality cuticle oil.

FOR OILY SKIN CUCUMBERS
GRAPEFRUIT
Cucumbers have excellent antioxidant properties and helps rehydrate your body. Since cucumber is made of 95 percent water; it eliminates toxins by flushing them out of your body. For best results, eat them raw.
The grapefruit’s high fibre and water content means that it fills you up on few calories and also gets digested quickly. High Vitamin C content helps flush fat quickly from your system. Try not to add sugar to lessen the tang, you’ll be defeating the health purposes if you do this.
OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS Eat foods that don’t promote inflammation as it can manifest in many different ways including heart disease to unhealthy-looking oilier skin. Foods that have vegetable oils, refined grains are all high in omega-6 fatty acids. Instead, opt for food rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Cold-water fish like salmon, tuna, soybeans, avocados and nuts are rich omega-3 acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties.
HIGH FIBRE FOODS Fibre helps flush out toxins from your body and it also absorbs essential nutrients. Eating high-fibre foods also helps you stay fuller for longer and boosts skin tone. Good sources of fibre include oatmeal, legumes, citrus fruits, corn and brown rice.

VITAMIN When we think of Australia, we think of surf, sun and sand, beautiful climates and the great outdoors. Our lifestyle means we all should get a healthy dose of vitamin D from our sun’s rays. But did you know that an estimated 73% of adults suffer from a vitamin D deficiency? ‌ Are we spending too much time indoors? We have been taught to Slip, Slop, Slap and protect our skin in the warmer weather, which is important in the prevention of skin cancer. But with so many factors influencing our vitamin D intake, we need to consider alternative ways to ensure both ourselves and our families get adequate vitamin D. Page 50
DELVING INTO VITAMIN D Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin naturally derived from UVB waves from the sun. Dietary sources are limited and include oily fish and egg yolks. Vitamin D is well known for its role in maintaining the health of bones and improving calcium absorption; but D is so much more than this! It helps improve immunity; reducing the frequency of colds and flus and managing more serious autoimmune conditions. Vitamin D also improves muscle strength and can reduce fractures in the elderly. Did you realise that low levels of vitamin D have also been associated with an increased risk of certain cancers and other chronic diseases, including cardiovascular
disease and diabetes? Interestingly, vitamin D may even help support healthy moods and is a beneficial part of the treatment for depression. Now that we’re heading in the warmest part of the year, we need to find a happy-medium of sun exposure that is healthy for us. You may only need a couple of minutes in the sun to boost your D levels, especially on those scorching days over Christmas. Think of alternative ways to get some sun, like hanging out the washing in a singlet and shorts, or taking a stroll on the beach in the morning before 11am. If you’re worried about damaging your skin, think of taking supplementation. Vitamin D tablets or capsules may be a safer option for many. It’s important to know what you’re looking for when you’re buying, supplements generally come in a range of different strengths and you’ll need to know which product will give you the most benefits. Being a fat soluble vitamin, D is prone to oxidisation and deterioration, so it’s important to use a high quality vitamin D with proven stability. ASKING THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS CAN HELP YOU BE CONFIDENT YOU ARE ACQUIRING A GOOD QUALITY VITAMIN D: ⊲ What conditions has it been stored in? Being exposed to high temperatures, humidity, air or light are factors that may affect the quality of vitamin D. ⊲ Is the vitamin D in a specialised antioxidant oil base to enhance stability and absorption? ⊲ Has it been tested using real time stability testing, to ensure it stays fresh up until the expiry date? ⊲ Has it been tested for the presence of contaminants? In order to achieve and maintain optimal vitamin D levels, here are a few simple steps you can follow in your weekly routine: If getting sun exposure, aim for six to seven minutes midmorning or mid-afternoon. Keep your arms, shoulders and legs bare. Be aware that UV levels are highest between 11am and 3pm so be cautious going out uncovered for longer than this. If you know you are low in vitamin D and you wish to avoid the sun, it may be more appropriate to correct a deficiency with a supplement to quickly and safely build up your vitamin D stores. If you’re unsure about your current vitamin D levels, pop in to Noosa Natural Therapies and Susan Ponton can help you better understand your body’s deficiencies with a series of scans and assessments. Susan can then offer advice and supplements to get your body on the road to being happy and healthy. Page 51

“My earliest memories of loose leaf tea were from my Grandma’s house. I’ll never forget the sweet smell of the leaves as the kettle was whistling away on the stove in the background. DAYS TO A FLAT STOMACH
Another year and another summer has rolled around. As much as you’d like to ignore it, your flaunting a little extra belly pooch from those Carbonara’s you had in winter. Here are five easy steps to do over seven days to flatten your stomach before you slip into last season’s bikini and hit the Sunny Coast’s salty surf. 1. Eat small meals, about the size of your palm about every two hours. This will kick your metabolism into gear and nhelp reduce bloating! 2. Eat your dinner earlier. Your metabolism won’t burn calories as quickly while you sleep, so give your body at least three-four hours food free before you catch your Z’s. 3. Wear tight clothing, you’ll find yourself sucking in and tensing your core so as to look a little leaner. It’s like doing ab exercises all day long! 4. Drink water before and after every meal. Water will help you feel fuller and should stop you from over-eating.Keep that bottle of water handy by your side! 5. Try to keep carbs and sugars to a minimum, we all know these nasties taste good on the lips, but stay on the hips!

PO NT ON WO RD S EM ILY
Tips, tricks, food and tunes all make for a successful (or unsuccessful) running experience. It’s time to stop sweating the small stuff and join the run club this summer. DON’T THINK YOU CAN? The oldest person to complete a marathon was 100 years young...if that’s not enough to prove you wrong then we don’t know what is!
interval training. Getting your heart rate up helps burn calories and is the most effective way to get the most out of your run. - Make a killer playlist: Choose upbeat songs that have a good consistent bass beat. The steady beat will help you pace yourself over long distances. People who listen to music while working out are 15% more likely to work harder!
READY, STEADY, GO! Before you start you should know a couple of things. Buy the right shoe - this is a VERY important one. The wrong shoe can completely destroy your feet, back and everything in between. You’ll need good support and a lightweight sole. We suggest Asics or Nikes for ultimate comfort during your afternoon jog around Noosa National Park. FOR THE LATE BLOOMER If you’ve only just started running or are thinking of taking it up now, start with run-walks. Do a maximum of 30 minutes to start and then build it up as your body strengthens. We suggest running for one minute and then walk for one minute, advance up to two minute run, one minute walk then three minute run and one minute walk – keep this up until you don’t need to walk anymore. TAKE REST DAYS Listen to your body, if it’s a little achy the day after your jog, take a rest and let it recover. It serves no purpose to push your body into an injury. Be patient and let your body tell you when it’s ready for the next stint. MIX IT UP A consistent running routine can get boring if you don’t mix it up. You can do a number of different things to make your running experience more interesting. - Do intervals: Once you’ve built up your fitness, try sprinting for a few minutes and then recovery walk/jog inbetween. The fastest way to lose weight is to work on Page 54
- Include other workouts: Doing exercises to strengthen your muscles on your days off will help your endurance. Schedule in a couple of weight sessions a week, remember to build up your weights slowly. If you’re not keen on pumping iron, do some Pilates or yoga. There’s some great Youtube channels or apps out there, which are perfect for self-teaching and are cheap too! We love Blogilates! GET FLEXI The most important part of a quick recovery from running is in the prep before and the cool-down after. Jump online and check out some good stretches specifically for running and learn how to do them properly. You’ll need to lengthen your quads, hammies, calves, ankles and even your glutes and back. POWER OF THE MIND Did you know that the longest plank ever held was for four hours!! This just proves the power of your mind is capable of SO much more than you give it credit for. You’ll be surprised at what your body is capable of if you just let your mind be positive – avoid thoughts that are going to slow you down, instead of thinking about how much your body hurts, or how low on breath you are, change your attitude to focus on how well you’re doing. A positive mind will break ALL boundaries. ON THAT NOTE – RUN GIRL, RUN!

Have you noticed the latest craze sneaking into our gyms? Seemingly normal women tempted by the desire of a tan bronzer than the Wally Lewis statue at Suncorp Stadium and muscles more defined than Madonna on tour? These everyday mothers are taking the challenge and entering body building competitions across our nation, very successfully. One day they’re cruising alongside you (and assumingly, with you) on the bike in spin class, the next they announce they are entering a Body Sculpting comp and can no longer come to mid week coffee catch ups. Cra Cra. Make no mistake, these women are dedicated, disciplined and dangerous. Training seven days a week and then further into planning, three times a day, consuming diet’s high in protein, low in fat and starving their well oiled machines of any skerrick of real flavour…seriously, if I had to eat chicken and broccoli for breakfast everyday and satisfy a craving with a tablespoon of organic peanut butter I think I’d rather stick to my beach fashion regime of kaftan, boardies and possible full length wetsuit. The transformation amongst these women is incredible and the high they feel from their achievements. Page 55
Of course I’m jealous, especially as I know I will never posses the qualities to then perform a solo dance in strips of jewel encrusted cloth (bikini),flexing muscles in places I didn’t know existed, in choreographed perfection, in front of 300 screaming over enthusiastic family members, friends and perverts, whoops, I mean people. The last time I walked in a bikini in public I was 15 and strolling carefree along the Mooloolaba Esplanade licking an innocent ice cream and certainly did not count calories. Then what happens to all those well earnt glorious mounds of muscle after the big event? I ponder this as I look down at my rolled up stomach whilst devouring the last cup cake on the communal plate in the office. This is my daily ritual yet for these athletes, it’s a well deserved reward after months of gruelling training. Do they continue this quest for body perfection forever? Apparently my friend Tash is now entering her second competition at the age of 30 with two small children in tow. She loves it and is hooked. “It’s a bit like planning for a wedding”, she laughed. Lord give me strength. Planning one of those was tough enough!

MEET VLOGGER & BLOGGER
CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? I’m Maddie, a 22 year old vlogger and blogger based in the North Brisbane area. I moved to Queensland from the UK four years ago by myself at the age of 18. It was the scariest thing I have ever done, but it has been the biggest adventure of my life so far! I lived on the beautiful Sunshine Coast for a year and loved the lifestyle and the incredibly friendly people, now I am living with my family who also made the move to Australia. One thing most people find shocking about me, is that I actually study a degree in education and I finish in less than two months. People don’t normally put teaching and the internet together because putting yourself out there on the internet is often seen as a bit strange and ‘taboo’, but I think Youtube and working for yourself through the internet is starting to become more and more accepted! I love studying education and through Youtube I use what I have learnt and pass it on to young girls and women from around the World. My aim through Youtube is to educate and empower young women, to inspire them to be themselves, and to love who they are. Through teaching I can inspire and empower children to be the best possible people they can be, but through Youtube I can reach so many more people from around the World. Through Youtube I have a voice and I love knowing I am helping girls with even just the simplest tasks like, ‘how to study for exams’ or ‘how to rewind after a long day at school’. Page 64
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? This is a tricky one! Well, I definitely feel I have a very unique style, but it changes from week to week. I always wear what I feel comfortable and confident in. Sometimes there is a huge pressure to follow fashion trends and always be up to date with them, but unless I feel comfortable, I’m not going to wear it. Right now I would say that my personal style is very sophisticated and feminine. I’m all about midiskirts, florals and stripes.
HOW CAN OUR READERS FIND/ FOLLOW YOU? You can find me on my Youtube channel ‘maddieslifestyle’ at: www. youtube.com/maddieslifestyle where I upload a range of beauty, fashion and lifestyle videos every week. You can also follow me on Instagram: @maddielouxx where you can find out about what I’m getting up to, what products I’m loving and just a few more personal things. Instagram is where I get to interact with you all more!
I ALWAYS WEAR WHAT I FEEL COMFORTABLE AND CONFIDENT IN.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS TIME? That is probably the hardest question to answer. In five years time I honestly just hope I am happy with what I am doing and that I love what I am doing every single day. I hope that every day is as exciting as the next and that each day is still an adventure. In five years time I either see myself teaching somewhere in the World and supporting and nurturing young children in their learning and development or still doing my entrepreneurial work with Youtube and blogging. I would absolutely love to have my own brand or business. Maybe one day.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH REGARDS TO YOUR YOUTUBE VIDEOS? When Youtube first appeared back in 2007 I was incredibly intrigued. I attended Boarding School in the UK and I was a huge part of the school’s arts program. This meant I was always singing, performing and acting, however a lot of my family could never make it to watch my live performances. I saw Youtube and thought it would be an excellent idea to upload a video of mine and a friend’s duet so that my Granddad could watch it. I was so surprised to suddenly see people were commenting, sharing their thoughts and opinions and providing constructive criticism. It was a whole new community that I found and absolutely adored! From then on I uploaded about one music video a week on my (now deleted) music channel. I continued uploading on my music channel for about 5 years until I started ‘Maddieslifestyle’ last August which is something I’ve always wanted to do, but I’ve always been too scared to do. I have honestly never looked back; I love creating content, planning it, editing it and sharing it with the World. It is the best feeling to know you are helping people, even if it’s just entertaining people and making them smile after a hard day’s work!
THREE BEAUTY PRODUCTS YOU CAN NOT LIVE WITHOUT? I cannot live without foundation, mascara and any sort of eye brow product. Benefit’s ‘They’re Real’ Mascara is my go to product at the moment, wearing mascara can pull any look together. Also, having very fair hair, I have to really define my eyebrows. Even if I’m running late, I always have time for eyebrows! They frame your face and they are unique to each and every one of us. Page 65

the new kids on the block GLASS- COFFEE HOUSE AND SURF GALLERY
(@glass_coffee) A simple concept that is exactly what the residents of the Sunshine Coast are after, and Mitch Surman and Sebastian Robison are about to make it happen! Mitch (local shredder, shaper and all round legend, who knows exactly what’s hot @ mssurfboards) and Sebastian (surf photographer that is oozing with talent and a crisp style @ sea_bass) discovered after a short trip to Bali they share a passion for coffee and surfing. The enthusiastic duo decided and agreed to collaborate and bring you a coffee house full of good vibes, rad people, fine hand crafted surfboards and beautiful photography. The two put their heads together, asked for some expert advice from their better halves and decided
it was time they created a space that the community had been chasing. A space where everyone is welcome, a space to kick back, relax and grab a delicious coffee, while browsing over some great looking boards and smart looking photos and there it was, GLASS WAS BORN. Located at shop 4/80-82 Sixth Avenue Maroochydore and open early November. So pop in whenever, treat yourself to a jaffle and a sneaky smoothie, or a pick-me-up coffee and a piece of cake. GLASS will stock Mitch Surman’s classic MS Surfboards, and Sebastian Robison’s fresh surf photography. If that wasn’t enough to spark your interest, with the help of Fonzie Abbott Espresso, $1 from every kilo of coffee sold goes to Surf Aid Bali – so by treating yourself, you’re treating someone else. Delicious! Can’t wait to see your smile there.

THREE MINUTES HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY? No actually, I thought I wanted to be a different kind of artist, doing either painting or drawing; then I thought graphic design would be fun! I have always been interested in amazing imagery and art so photography and design just came to me. When studying I became way more interested in photography than design and once I finished the course I was too excited to get my photography career started to continue on to the fine arts course.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? A few ways... messy/boho/casual WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE DOING FIVE YEARS FROM NOW? Still taking photo’s! haha. Would love to see more of my work in print in magazines and just freelancing around doing whatever jobs I like! I do love working with a team at a studio so I am sure I will continue doing that also.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AS A PHOTOGRAPHER? After finishing my two years of study I started getting my hands on any kind of job I could (to try everything) and It’s been about 5 years now! WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT TAKING PHOTOS? I LOVE making people look amazing and feel amazing, especially when they say ‘’I’m not photogenic’’. It’s also creating a piece of art!, It’s so interesting to shoot all different kinds of people and exciting when your capturing that ‘wow’ factor.

EMMA BEAU: EMERGING FROM THE RURAL TOWN OF GYMPIE THIS YOUNG LADY IS CERTAINLY MAKING A NAME FOR HERSELF IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. WHEN DID YOU FIRST START PLAYING THE FIDDLE? My parents enrolled me into school violin lessons when I was 8 years old. I absolutely loved it and continued to pursue playing. In high school I was considered to be a bit of a geek but I stuck to my guns and now I’m singing, playing violin and other instruments for some pretty great performers. HOW DID YOU BREAK INTO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AND START PLAYING PROFESSIONALLY? I was 13 when my folks moved to the Sunshine Coast region (Gympie) and I started playing fiddle in a country music program at my high school, where I also began experimenting with singing and playing the guitar. In that time I started playing in bands that went touring to Tamworth, Sydney and everywhere in-between; I quickly learnt that playing music and touring was what I wanted to do with my life.
WHICH IS DUE TO BE RELEASED TOWARDS THE END OF THE YEAR? I am so excited to release my first EP! I’ve self penned 5 songs that I’m truly proud of and tell the story of my life thus far. There’s songs about love, politics, anxieties, friendship and more. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF (MUSICALLY) WITHIN THE NEXT 5 YEARS? Hopefully I’ll have released another album and be promoting that too! I’m happy to be just playing music and touring as I am at the moment, but I’d like to take my tour overseas and play some festivals throughout Europe and the USA. I guess ultimately, I just want to be successful in producing good music with some lyrical depth to it that can last the test of time. CONNECT WITH EMMA www.emmabeau.com or find her on Facebook
WHAT IS IT LIKE TOURING WITH KASEY CHAMBERS? Kasey is such an easy going, relaxed human that being on the road with her is lovely. She shines with positivity, which definitely reflects back onto the stage. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR FIRST EP Page 68

I know this may shock you but we’re not that far away from the end of the year. So now having read that like most you’re probably thinking about all the things that come with that realisation like what needs to be organised?, what am I going to do?, what do I buy for presents?, plus all the other thoughts that come with the onset of the Christmas holiday period. As we start to wind up things for the end of the year, music artists aren’t slowing down at all. We’ve had some huge tunes coming at us all year and it seems with our seasonal changes the weather isn’t the only thing heating up.
PA LO M A FA I TH One HUGE voice that has started to become a regular name is Paloma Faith. We heard Paloma when she teamed up with Pharrell Williams earlier this year on ‘Can’t Rely On You’ , then she smashed the charts with ARIA Number 1 hit ‘Only Love Can Hurt like This’. Most recently however British Drum & Bass duo Sigma had Paloma lend her vocals on their track called ‘Changes’, which I’ve been frothing on since the song was 1st released in the UK. Her voice just rips through this track, especially at the 2min :55 mark- WOAH! While Paloma is just starting out here in Australia she is already well known back in her home country of the UK. She’s a multi-talented girl having studied ballet dancing on the way to becoming the singer we now know, but during her journey to the top Paloma dabbled in a few jobs from cabaret singing for money to being a magician’s assistant, to name just a few. With 3 albums under her belt already I think Paloma is just starting her career due to having a classic yet unique voice that appeals to a variety of different music tastes. Add in her unique sense of fashion style which always gets her noticed and you have the makings of what could be our new music icon. Page 70
Another artist who is starting to gain a lot of attention is our very own Iggy Azalea. Female rapper Iggy is originally from Mullumbimby in NSW but moved to the US at the age of 16 to start her music career. She’s been doing well in the States gaining a name for herself and now the rest of the world is learning all about our Iggy. Her breakthrough track here was “Fancy” which was accompanied with the music video take off from the cult 90’s film “Clueless”, and we also heard her on T.I’s ‘Change Your Life’. More recently you would have heard Iggy featuring on Ariana Grande’s big tune ‘Problem’ and her latest hit with Rita Ora ‘Black Widow’ which is already doing well. With Iggy’s album release titled ‘The New Classic’, she’s enjoyed some huge success with ‘Fancy’ taking out No. 1 on the Billboard HOT100 in the USA. This made her only the 4th solo female rapper ever to hit the top of the HOT100 charts which is a huge accolade. It doesn’t stop there with the Ariana Grande track “Problem” hitting No. 2 in the same week, Iggy made history yet again joining The Beatles and Ashanti as the only music acts ever to place both No. 1 and No. 2 with their first 2 hits in the one week. Not bad for an Aussie female rapper! It seems even though Iggy is a rapper she’s managed to get herself into a few different styles of songs that have helped along the way. If you haven’t been able to hear her style yet you’ll be happy to know November sees her re- release her album this time called ‘Reclassified’ with 5 new tracks.

Speaking about artists breaking through this year, locals ‘In2Nation’ have been a band that I’ve heard a lot of talk about recently. You may know more of them now however, after they performed recently at the Caloundra Music Festival in October…. and wow what a set it was! It’s been a good year for this upbeat group who’s unique style of funk, reggae, hip hop and rock has been getting everybody up and moving for the past 6 years. They released their long awaited sophomore album ‘Ground Up’ earlier this year, have been performing at major music festivals as well as gigs in local spots on the coast, you may have seen them a few times at Ocean street’s SolBar venue. The very talented musicians of In2Nation include MickDOG on lead vocals, Quizz on bass, guitarist Olli J, Brett on drums, Sean who plays it all and Ben on the sax who I can say is amazing after having him in the SeaFM studio playing the sax part of Klingande’s ‘Jubel’ live on air - that was freakin’ awesome! Seems that all the hard work this Sunny Coast band has put in is starting to pay off with people talking about them. You can find out more about these guys at in2nation.com.au or on the facebook page in2nationmusic.
As well as keeping up to date on all things music while I’m on air at 91.9 SEAFM I tweet a lot about songs I’m digging so find me at @loudrach. Page 71
