Orca continually researches and develops innovative new performance fabrics. These are deployed in the construction of our high performance garments. The newest entry into Orca’s collection of world first fabric blends is high quality Merino mixed with Seacell, a fibre extracted from seaweed, that we call SeaMerino™. Similar to cosmetics, seaweed fibre contains vitamins and minerals which are naturally released by the fabric then absorbed into the skin when the garment is worn.
REST DAY In a true world-first innovation, Orca’s Bodyskn series combines the natural performance characteristics of New Zealand Merino wool, with the health and wellbeing benefits of a seaweed based fibre called Seacell. Orca uses a premium 50/50 blend of Merino and Seacell alongside a high quality 75/25 mix. SWEAT IT Merino can naturally soak up to 35% of its weight in water vapour, making it twice as effective at absorbing and releasing sweat as polyester (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation). This means better active performance and higher levels of comfort. The core of the Merino fibre is hydrophilic, this allows moisture to be absorbed in larger quantities near more humid areas closer to the skin and released in other drier areas. NO ODOUR Merino is naturally anti bacterial. It resists odour. This makes Merino ideal for everyday layering wear, enabling garments to be worn a number of times before washing. SKIN SOFT The Micron is the diameter measurement of the fibre. Lower measurements equal fine grades – which feel softer next to the skin. Generally the micron range for Merino apparel is between 16-24. Orca uses Ultrafine New Zealand Merino that has a micron between 17.5-19.5. EASY CARE Unlike other wool fibres, Merino is very durable and can be machine washed and regularly worn. WARM COOL Merino is naturally thermo-neutral. It responds to changes in the micro-climate around the body. Because Merino can absorb more moisture than other fabrics there is a noticeable drop in temperature as moisture evaporates at the surface. Conversely, if the ambient temperature drops, moisture in the air can be absorbed by Merino and converted to bound liquid – a process known as ‘heat absorption’, which allows temperatures to rise. This means Merino will allow a drop in temperature when you sweat and a rise in temperature when you chill, it also retains warmth when wet.
UV PROTECT Studies have shown that Merino offers natural UV protection. At over UPF50+, Merino’s UV armour is tougher than most other textiles. WATER RESIST The surface layer of a Merino fibre is hydrophobic, allowing Merino to be more water resistant than cotton, nylon or polyester. Because of this, when moisture lightly touches the surface of a Merino garment, it naturally beads away. FIRE PROOF Merino’s unique chemical composition and its high water absorption mean it’s naturally fire resistant. It’s self extinguishing. Unlike most synthetics Merino doesn’t melt if it comes into contact with flame. BREATHE EASY Orca likes Merino because it’s an active fabric. Scientific testing has shown that a combination of natural factors contribute to an elevated ability in controlling and absorbing moisture compared with other natural or synthetic fibres. This capability to breathe lowers humidity in the micro-climate between skin and garment. Studies have shown there is less physiological demand required when exercising in both hot and cold conditions if wearing a Merino wool single jersey product. It’s this ability to absorb and evaporate moisture which gives Merino an edge over the others. WE CARE Orca uses Merino produced in a renewable, sustainable manner. New Zealand Merino is renowned for its quality and is produced in line with global best practice for the treatment of Merino sheep. Merino is biodegradable too because it’s a natural fibre made from protein, which is very similar to human hair. Orca’s Merino can also be traced to the farm where it was grown.
