Te Miha Hamilton: Saturday 7 September 2019 Rotorua: Sunday 8 September 2019

Welcome from the 'Te Miha' Music Director A great many composers have set to music the Latin text of the traditional and ancient Mass. Such works commonly feature five primary movements reflecting the process of the Ordinary of the Mass. These five are known as the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei and with some minor variations form the backbone of most Mass settings. Some, such as the incomparable Mass in B minor of J.S.Bach (1685-1750) are deeply ornate and require substantial choral forces, and are seldom presented outside of large concert auditoria. The recurring appropriation of this religious text for the purposes of musical elevation has long fascinated me, and particularly the adherence to tradition that it represents, but more how this functions here in Aotearoa New Zealand. In a number of our country’s parish churches the Mass is conducted in te reo Maori, using a translation initially developed by Pā Hoani Papita (Father John Baptist Becker), a priest who was trained at London’s Mill Hill seminary with the express purpose of developing a ministry in Aotearoa - New Zealand, arriving here in 1886. Under the direction of Pa Mikaere Ryan this long-evolved translation was formalised in response to the Second Vatican Council (1962 -1965) which sought to strengthen the relationship between the Catholic Church and the modern world, and this official translation can be heard in many locations throughout our country. I am indebted to Pa Mikaere and Adam Renata (Katekita) for their introduction to the translation and the potency it holds. In setting this Mass in Maori to music I adopted the five common movements that form the traditional approach. Te Miha offers vocal melodies that are often narrow in range and use many unisons, befitting some traditional waiata characteristics. The vocal arrangement is uncluttered and with minimal ornamentation so that the words can be heard. The accompaniment is certainly modern but also offers glimpses of traditions in Western classical music. So, in their way, the music, text and language each present cultural traditions and allow us insight into multiple worlds.

Programme notes and The Order of Mass Ranginui and Pāpātuanuku Kotahi Te Wairua 2018 A re-telling of the ancient Maori myth of Ranginui and Pāpātuanuku - the Sky-father and Earthmother who existed locked in a loving embrace. Their children, the young Gods, grew tall and strong and, in their desperate struggle for space, separated the parents by force. Not all the Gods agreed to the separation and we are reminded of that to this day by the forcible demonstrations of nature during a storm. In their search for identity and independence the young Gods created the natural world as we know it, leaving Rangi and Pāpā in aching separation forever. Kotahi Te Wairua released their recording of this work in 2018 and tonight present eight songs from the project: 1 Obsession: the love of Rangi and Pāpā 2 Kotahi Te Wairua - Unity of Spirit 3 Ngā Tamariki - the children 4 Noho I Te Pō Ke Ao - living in darkness 5 Kakai - the plotting of the young Gods 6 Riri o Tawhiri Mātea - the wrath of Tawhiri Mātea 7 Roimata Mo Pāpā - tears for Pāpā 8 Ataahua o Ngā Motu - the beauty of the Pacific Te Miha A setting of the Mass in te reo Māori for chamber orchestra and vocal ensemble From the reo Māori translation by Pā Hoani Papita (Father John Baptist Becker), Pā Henare (Father Wientjes) and Pā Mikaere (Father Mick Ryan).
