NUTWELL

LODGE TIES!

When Julie Whittingham, General Manager at Nutwell Lodge in Exeter, went away on holiday, her staff decided to surprise her when she returned. Mark Cutland (Head Chef), David Williams (Assistant Manager) and Sam Hopkins (Assistant Manager) had custom-made GBC ties and were wearing them to welcome her back! A bit of creativity that the customers love; great work guys!

THATCHED HOUSE

PUB OF THE

SEASON The Thatched House in Poulton-Le-Fylde collected their first ever seasonal award this October! This magnificent achievement was celebrated by the pub with a special CAMRA Pub of the Season Award Night on the 21st October; pictures below. Congratulations to Vin and the team; keep up the great work!

FAMOUS

There were three famous faces doing the O-Land rounds this month; Dame Judy Dench was spreading her class to the team at the Buccaneer in Eastbourne; the operatic pop vocal group Il Divo dropped in at the Cleveland Arms in Wolverhampton and footballing legend Peter Beardsley took his NUFC Under 21 side to The Anson in Wallsend to play the Wallsend Boys Club Senior FC.

THE YEAR FINALIST! The talent out there in O-Land is exhaustive and there’s nothing more rewarding than having the platform to share these stories! Christian Young – Chef at the Priory in Wellingborough – was named as a Finalist in the Young Chef of the Year category at the Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards 2014/15. This is an immense achievement. Christian – everyone at Orchid is incredibly proud of your success. Very well done!

At the end of September the Monkseaton Arms in Whitley Bay held a ‘Proper’ British Day by hosting a Morris Dancing competition outside their pub! This is an annual event and the second year that the pub has hosted the event on a Sunday. According to Monkseaton Manager Leigh Dryden, “Morris Dancing was first introduced as a way to increase fertility”. Thanks for sharing Leigh; beautiful stuff!

Cleveland Arms Wolverhampton

A staggering amount raised in one evening by the team at the Cleveland Arms! The pub held an evening with 2013 Speedway World Champion Tai Woffinden to help raise money for Great Ormond Street. The evening was a huge success; an interview with Nigel Pearson was set up on stage and signed photos were sold. A great night for all involved!

Middlesbrough

Congratulations to the Coulby Farm for supporting the local football team, Hemlington Juniors FC. They raised the money through their own Race Night. The collaboration has even resulted in the girls’ team having the Fuzzy Ed’s Funhouse logo, along with the Coulby Farm name, printed on their kits! In the photo below (left to right) there’s Coulby’s team-member Jenny Whittaker, the girl’s Head Coach, Sarah Emery (Funhouse Supervisor) and Helen Beal (Assistant Manager).

November 2014

orchid’s big That time of year is coming around again: the Orchid Big Weekend! This annual event allows you all to express yourselves and create an idea that can be anything you want it to be (within reason)! What will your idea be? Some possible examples below…

Some of last year’s events…

Charity Weekend O-Land is known for its continuous support of charities across the country. Why not raise some cash for a local organisation that is in dyer need of some funds? This will bring people into the pub and show you’re supporting a great cause in the community. This builds loyalty with your customers; a huge asset for continued growth.

Idea This pub hosted a Cinderella panto in Fuzzy Ed’s as part of the Orchid Big Weekend. There was also a pop up shop Christmas market in the pub. Both formed part of their launch of the festive season!

Oyster Catcher, Hull

Live Acts Why not book a live act to come down and play over the weekend? Scour the local area for a popular band, book them for one of the evenings, ask them to help spread the word of their upcoming performance and watch the customers roll in!

2

Movember Ask customers to grow a beard as part of Movember then have a shave-off over the Orchid Big Weekend. You could incorporate this with raising money for a charity or just offer prizes for the best looking tash! Get creative and think fun!

K Y M C

Casino Night Charge a fee for entry at the door and turn your pub into a casino for the weekend! Perhaps have a ‘black tie’ dress code to give the event a slice of sophistication. Have a live auction; ask local businesses to ‘sponsor’ a table; set up some blackjack and poker tables. Above all else, have fun with it!

Idea For their Big Weekend, The Anson had a special guest appearance from Mark Labbett, star of TV quiz show The Chase! Mark was challenged in a ‘Challenge the Beast’ event! Tickets were £20 per team with a maximum of four people in a group.
