Welcome

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A Proclamation

In 1492, Christopher Columbus and his mighty three-ship fleet, the Niña, Pinta,

and Santa Maria, first spotted the Americas. His historic achievement ushered in an Age of Discovery that expanded our knowledge of the world. Columbus’s daring journey marked the beginning of centuries of transatlantic exploration that transformed the Western Hemisphere. On Columbus Day, we commemorate the

achievements of this skilled Italian explorer and recognize his courage, will power, and ambition — all values we cherish as Americans.

Columbus’s spirit of determination and adventure has provided inspiration to

generations of Americans. On Columbus Day, we honor his remarkable accomplishments as a navigator, and celebrate his voyage into the unknown expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. His expedition formed the initial bond between Europe and the Americas, and changed the world forever. Today, in that spirit, we continue to seek new horizons for greater opportunity and further discovery on land, in sea, and in space.

Although Spain sponsored his voyage, Columbus was, in fact, a proud citizen of the Italian City of Genoa.

As we celebrate the tremendous strides our Nation has made since his arrival, we acknowledge the important contributions of Italian Americans to our country’s culture, business, and civic life. We are also thankful for

our relationship with Italy, a great ally that shares our strong, unwavering commitment to peace and prosperity. In commemoration of Christopher Columbus’s historic voyage, the Congress, by joint resolution of April

30, 1934, and modified in 1968 (36 U.S.C. 107), as amended, has requested the President proclaim the second Monday of October of each year as “Columbus Day.”

Welcome to the 31st Annual National Education & Leadership Awards (NELA) Gala. Tonight, we proudly honor three extraordinary Italian Americans as well as one family: Vivian Cardia; Bruno

Ciacciarelli; Lieutenant General (Ret.) Raymond Palumbo; and The Frank & Angela Donio Family. We are also proud to be hosting several veterans as our guests for tonight’s gala.

In addition to these extraordinary honorees and courageous veterans, we celebrate the promising future of

our Italian-American youth. This year’s Sons of Italy Foundation (SIF) scholarship winners were selected for a combination of exemplary academic performance, school leadership, and community service. The SIF and its national scholarship program are proud to contribute to the future of such students as they pursue higher education that will lead them to many impressive accomplishments down the road.

Finally, we come together on this night to recognize the Sons of Italy and raise money for its Foundation. To

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of

the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October

8, 2018, as Columbus Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I also direct that the flag of the United States be displayed on all public buildings on the appointed day in honor of our diverse history and all who have contributed to shaping this Nation.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fifth day of October, in the year of our

Lord two thousand eighteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-third.

date, members have raised more than $165 million for charities and scholarships. The past year was a particularly

significant one, as the SIF made two separate donations of $100,000 ($200,000 total) in earthquake relief to the Andrea Bocelli Foundation for the rebuilding of a kindergarten and elementary school in Muccia, a town located in

the Marche region of Italy. These substantial donations were made possible through the contributions of members, Local Lodges, and Grand Lodges of the Order Sons & Daughters of Italy in America.

In addition to earthquake relief, the SIF also donated $20,000 to Help Our Military Heroes—the SIF’s fifth

contribution in six years. The donation provided a minivan for USArmy CPT Gavin White (ret.). To all veterans in attendance tonight, thank you for your service and your sacrifice.

This evening, we should feel proud of the SIF’s commitment to giving back as well as the many other ways in

which our Local Lodges and Grand Lodges have given to those in need on a local, national, and international level. It is an evening such as this that allows us to honor these collective efforts and helps raise funds so that the SIF may continue its mission. DONALD J. TRUMP

THE 2019 SIF NATIONAL EDUCATION & LEADERSHIP AWARD

THE 2019 SIF EXCELLENCE IN BUSINESS AWARD Vivian Cardia was born in Manhattan to a wonderful family

The American Dream is better fulfilled when you can share it with the people you love. Behind every great man is a great

woman; both Bruno and Ann Marie continue to build a life of love and family, guided by Italian traditions, and share the Italian way of life with their beautiful children Daniella, Christopher, and Nicholas.

Sitting at the dinner table every evening with my family, I learned the most important lessons that life brings our way. Listening to my parents recount about the hardships of their workday indirectly taught me that success in life comes through hard work and sacrifice. Steadfast Italian traditions taught me that keeping your feet firmly grounded keeps you true to yourself. At my family table I was also able to freely convey my thoughts and feelings, which properly set my moral compass. I learned that love and kindness are universally understood, no matter what your customs are. Assimilation was easy for us because we appreciated the opportunity to grow. It strikes a tender chord when I think that many families today do not have dinner together at their kitchen table, as I did. I owe all that I am to the lessons I learned as a boy. I am grateful to God and my family. They are the cornerstones onto which I have built my life. I am proud to be an Italian American and to continue our beautiful customs. Thank you for the honor of sharing this with you. ‘Non puoi insegnare niente a un uomo. Puoi solo aiutarlo a scoprire ció che ha dentro di sé.’ - Galileo Galilei 31 s t A n n ua l NEL A G a l a

During more than five decades of marriage, Angela and Frank were involved in a wide variety of philanthropic efforts, supporting religious organizations, educational initiatives, and civic change—setting a strong example for their sons: Frank, John, and Jim.

While raising the boys into capable men, Angela has been a passionate advocate for revitalization and conservation. A member

of the National Trust for Historic Preservation since 1978, the transformational growth of Downtown Hammonton is the direct

result of her leadership. Until his death in 2011, Frank, a trailblazer in the produce industry, found time to quietly support

individuals and organizations, asking nothing in return. Catholic religious communities of Sisters were among his favorite groups, ensuring that they had what they needed “to do their good work.”

companies whose products and services contribute to U.S. national security and the welfare of men and women in uniform.

Ray’s philanthropic passion is committed to improving the well-being of our nation’s military veterans, first

responders, and their families. As such, he serves as Director on the boards of Quality of Life-Plus and the Boulder Crest Foundation, non-profit organizations that deal with seen and unseen wounds, respectively.

Ray has a B.S. degree in engineering from West Point, an M.S. in administration from Central Michigan

University, and an M.S. in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He is a graduate of the British Higher Command and Staff course at the British Defense College in Shrivenham, England.

Ray is married to the former Alice Sweet from El Paso, Texas. They have four grown children and five

grandchildren and currently reside outside Washington, D.C.

My great-grandparents left the mountains of Abruzzo in the early 1900s to settle in a small coal town in the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania. They brought with them their faith in God, a generous dose of guts and grit, and dreams of building a better life. Those qualities became the special sauce that shaped the Palumbo family of today – a humble, hard-working

family built upon the love of God, patriotism, and an ethic of altruistic service to others.

These words have emboldened the work and lives of our family since they first came from Italy to America. Our story is one of humble beginnings, consistent and persistent work, building businesses, and strengthening communities, always in pursuit of giving back. Joe Mantegna

Michael Amante Featured Performer

Master of Ceremonies

A Tony and Emmy award-winning American actor, producer, writer, and director,

Joe Mantegna has more than 40 years of performance experience, earning him a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

He is best known for roles in box-office hits such as David Mamet’s highly acclaimed

House of Games, as well as Forget Paris, and CARS 2. He currently stars in the CBS television series Criminal Minds.

As father of an autistic daughter, Mr. Mantegna has spent many years helping autistic

children and families through ACT for Military Families, Easter Seals, and Autism Speaks. He has received numerous awards for his work with various veterans’ and military

organizations and the USO. In 2012, he was named the National Spokesperson for the

campaign to build the United States Army Museum in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia.

This year marks his 17th consecutive year as host of the National Memorial Day Concert and the SIF NELA Gala.

Help Our Military Heroes

The Sons of Italy Foundation is pleased to welcome tenor Michael Amante in what

is his 12th performance at the annual National Education & Leadership Awards Gala.

Mr. Amante is affectionately known as “the Prince of High C’s” for his ability to hit

and hold one of the highest notes of a tenor’s voice. Apart from his high C’s, his repertoire

showcases his vocal versatility. It includes pieces from The Phantom of the Opera; Puccini’s La Boheme; rock and gospel songs; and classic Neapolitan ballads.

A classically trained opera performer, Mr. Amante has had leading roles in Madama

Butterfly, La Traviata, and La Boheme. He has also performed in staged versions of Grease, West Side Story, and Jesus Christ, Superstar.

Michael Amante’s singing has drawn praise from the late great tenors Luciano

Pavarotti and Franco Corelli as well as Tony Bennett, President Bill Clinton, and Regis

Philbin. He has appeared on national and international television, receiving an Emmy nomination. The New York Times writes, “The swashbuckling Italian tenor exhibits both the voice and the charisma of a crossover star.”

Maria Fassio Pignati

“Improving the lives of our wounded military heroes through mobility and independence”

Help Our Military Heroes (HOMH) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing fully equipped, adaptive minivans

to our country’s most severely wounded, injured, and ill service men and women who sustained their injuries while on active duty. HOMH works with each individual to provide a minivan with modifications specific to his or her needs. It was co-founded in 2009 by Laurie (née Serricchio) and Ted Hollander and Marybeth Vandergrift. Since then, they have awarded 115 adaptive minivans to deserving veterans.

This year, on April 6, the Sons of Italy Foundation (SIF) presented a donation of $20,000 to HOMH. This year’s donation

marks the fifth time in six years that the Sons of Italy Foundation has donated at least $20,000 to HOMH. The donation provided

a minivan grant for USArmy CPT Gavin White (ret), a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2011.

Featured Performer

Performing the American and Italian national anthems for us this evening is soprano

Maria Fassio Pignati of San Francisco. She earned a B.A. in Music with a minor in Italian prior to studying voice and piano at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Ms. Fassio Pignati is a well-known soprano soloist who performs in various venues

and is a member of the “Trio Amore” opera ensemble, which has recorded a collection of classic Italian love songs entitled La Vita Bella. She has also performed the National Anthem for the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, and Golden State Warriors.

Active in the Italian-American community for more than forty years, Ms. Fassio

Pignati is a past state president of the Sons and Daughters of Italy’s Grand Lodge of

California, which consists of lodges in California, southern Oregon, and western Nevada. She also serves on the boards of several organizations, including the San Francisco Columbus Day Celebration, Italian Community Services, and is a co-opted member of COM.IT.ES San Francisco, representing the Sons and Daughters of Italy.

For her long-standing service to the Bay Area’s Italian community, Maria Fassio Pignati was recently made a Commander

of the Italian Republic with the title “Commendatore dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia.” Maria has been performing at the The Help Our Military Heroes and Sons of Italy Foundation van presentation to USArmy CPT Gavin White (ret). Representing the Sons of Italy Foundation was SIF Trustee Emeritus Frank J. Panessa.

s CULTURAL PRESERVATION & IMMIGRATION HISTORY

The Sons of Italy Foundation

Making a Difference

The SIF’s Garibaldi-Meucci Museum is a center of Italian culture on Staten Island, NY. The SIF also contributes to preserving Italian immigrant documents at the Immigration History Research Center in Minnesota and now has partnered with Ancestry.com to broaden its impact.

The Sons of Italy Foundation (SIF) is the philanthropic arm of the Order Sons and Daughters

of Italy in America (OSDIA). Established in 1959, the SIF has given nearly $165 million to

scholarships, philanthropy, medical research, cultural projects, disaster relief efforts, veterans’ causes and other special projects.

Find the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum on Facebook @GaribaldiMeucciMuseum!

SCHOLARSHIPS, EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES & SUPPORT

Every year, the SIF and OSDIA lodges give scholarships to promising ItalianAmerican students. Since 1959, the SIF has given nearly $65 million in scholarships at the local, state and national levels.

HONORING AND ASSISTING THOSE WHO PROTECT AND SERVE The SIF helped fund the creation of the World War II Memorial and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. In recent years, the SIF has given tens of thousands of dollars to various groups that support veterans’ causes, including the Wounded Warrior Project, the Gary Sinise Foundation, Help Our Military Heroes, and Luke’s Wing’s, among others.

MEDICAL RESEARCH The SIF supports research to help national charities find cures for the most devastating diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, autism, and Cooley’s anemia.

DISASTER RELIEF The SIF donates generously to disaster relief in the U.S. and abroad. With the help of State Grand Lodges, Local Filial Lodges, and individual donors, the SIF raised $200,000 to aid relief efforts for the Central Italy earthquake that struck in August 2016. This past year, the SIF donated those funds to the Andrea Bocelli Foundation, who is heading a project to rebuild a kindergarten and elementary school in Muccia, a town located in the Marche region.

The SIF supports the establishment and restoration of U.S. monuments, including the Statue of Liberty, the World War II Memorial, and National 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City.
