HOUSING ADVICE FROM THE PROS
AG CAMPUS HOUSING
13TH & OLIVE
“Plan ahead! Before pre-lease season, decide with your future roommates what area you prefer, what your budget is and list your must-haves (washer/dryer, etc.). Many students go into it with the idea that they will look at everything first then decide. Then when they decide on one, it is already taken by another group. Narrow down your search to a handful and tour those, that way you know you have a good shot at the one that meets all of your needs.”
CAPRI APARTMENTS “Look at the surroundings and how close it is to the school.”
“Choose a community and not just an apartment complex. This is one of the most enjoyable times in your life and as you transition to adulthood make sure you don’t choose a place to live based on cost or style, but how you feel the community will help you grow as an individual.”
THE HUB
WEBFOOT RENTALS
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be sure to read what you sign. Also, please don’t forget that dreams do come true at the Hub.”
“Slow down, relax and understand there is plenty of inventory to consider. Finding the right fit with regards to budget and amenities could save you the stress of a future move.”

“LIVING OFF CAMPUS” In many cases, finding a place to live is the easy part of moving off campus - at least logistically speaking. For some of you, the apartment you are moving into may be furnished. In that case, you are one of the lucky few. For a much larger majority, the next step to living off campus after finding a place to live is furnishing your home and setting it up with basic services such as water and power. This can sound frustrating, but the positive is that you have just entered a stage in your life of utter creative freedom. For example, if you decide you really love Bob Marley, you can hang banners of him from every wall and no one can stop you. (Except your roommates who probably won’t be thrilled).
FURNITURE
In my case, I imagined that a house needed tons of furniture and I had no idea where to start when it came to finding it. The truth is, if you are moving into a house you probably only need a few couches and a dining room table. If you are moving into an apartment, you will need even less. When you are looking for pieces of furniture like a couch, start by asking parents or family friends. If they have kids your age, it’s more than likely that they have some slightly worn pieces that they will be happy to part with. This is an easy way to furnish your whole house if you are from Portland, for example. If you have to travel by airplane to reach school, it quickly stops making monetary sense to bring a family friend’s couch in checked bag fees alone. In that case, many thrift stores offer a selection of gently-used, well-priced furniture that’s perfect for creating a cozy atmosphere. I recommend St. Vincent De Paul at 2345 W Broadway, Eugene, OR 97402. If that’s less your style and you have a bit more money to spend, borrow a car and head to IKEA. I’d be shocked if they didn’t have everything you need.
AMENITITES
In living on your own, it is the details that add up. For example, yours truly and all of my roommates forgot to purchase a shower curtain. So for the first week of school, taking a shower had to done without privacy. It was very unsettling, to say the least. I highly recommend getting together with your prospective roommates and generating a list of things everyone will be responsible for. In the kitchen, you will need a full set of pots and pans, plates, bowls, silverware, baking sheets, foil, cooking utensils, a cooking knife, tons of paper towels, dish soap and dishwasher detergent (if you have a dishwasher) and definitely a coffee maker. In the bathroom you need toilet paper, hand soap, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. The point is, there are about a hundred small things that we need for our day to run properly and it shouldn’t fall on one person to collect them all. When thinking of the areas that need amenities, they can pretty easily be broken into 3 categories: bathroom, kitchen and laundry room. If you are in a house of three people, I’d recommend having one person in charge of the small accessories for each room.
SERVICES
Of all the new responsibilities that come with moving off campus, the most annoying to set up are the services which will later result in bills. The basic categories will be water and electric (i.e. EWEB) trash, wifi and the actual rent. Once again, don’t leave any one roommate responsible for handling everything, for one that’s a pain and two a lot of money has to come in and out of your bank account paying all these bills. For both EWEB and trash, you can set up an online account and register your address at www.eweb.org/billing/startstop and www.sanipac.com/residential/service-requests/ start-service/. With wifi, all you have to do is call the company and set up an installation appointment and after that you can pay online. Many students use Comcast Xfinity internet (800-266-2278). With rent, some landlords may collect in person and some may do so online. If your landlord does collect in person it is always beneficial to build a positive relationship with them. In your time living somewhere, it is more than likely that something will break and when it does you want someone there to fix it quickly and your landlord controls all of that. One final tip: if you don’t have the Venmo app, you should get it. It’s free, secure and syncs to your phone and Facebook contacts. Paying bills is much more simple when you can sent the payment to the person paying the bill at the drop of a hat. STORY BY: SAM STYLES

FINDING CHOOSING YOUR NEXT ROOMMATE Finding, choosing and keeping a roommate can be as stressful as moving itself. However, roommate experiences don’t have to be unpleasant, despite the various horror stories that have convinced you otherwise. Connecting with your perfect roommate does, however, require hard work and dedication. With the right tools and strategies, the potential frustration of the process can be avoided and you can move on to happy housemate bliss.
THE SEARCH
Begin your search by looking in the right places. For example, I recommend reaching out to friends to see if they know anyone also embarking on the roommate search; although it may be tempting to live with your closest friends, it’s not always the best idea, as living with your best friends will undoubtedly transform the dynamics of your friendship, sometimes for better, but often for worse. Try making a post on Craigslist or on one of the various housing classifieds on Facebook. When posting on public forums and contacting potential roommates, always remember to speak with honesty and intention. It’s vital to state exactly what you’re looking for in a potential roommate and what your expectations are. Remain open-minded, and unless you’re facing a tight deadline, don’t settle. If you’re looking to avoid the roommate search all together, inquire with your leasing office to see if the complex has its own roommate matching service. Some of the most popular student apartments with this service include Ducks Village, Hub On Campus, 2125 Franklin and 13th and Olive.
THE DECISION
After endless hours spent scrolling through dodgy Craigslist ads, you have found what seems to be the perfect potential candidate. Great! To confirm your positive speculations, prepare questions to ask, such as: • What are you looking for in a potential roommate? • Do you prioritize cleanliness and organization in your living space? • What are your study habits like? • What does your daily routine look like?
• How do you feel about overnight guests?
It’s ideal to share similar living habits with your potential roommate in order to avoid unnecessary conflict. However, it can be problematic if you choose your roommate solely on what interests and hobbies you share. If you choose someone who, like you, is a Medieval Studies major and has an unhealthy obsession with playing shuffleboard, you might not have much opportunity to venture out of your comfort zone. College is an opportune time to discover and cultivate your interests, to grow as an individual and to interact with diverse groups of people. Don’t let a poor roommate experience stifle this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Once you have found the right match, complete a roommate agreement on the next page. Happy hunting!
• Do you have a significant other? • What does your ideal weekend look like? • Do you consider yourself to be an introvert or an extrovert? • Describe your sense of style in three words.

NEW ROOMMATE
CONTRACT
Attention, new roommates: the following contractual agreement is to be signed before embarking together on the experience of independent living. Quite possibly serving only to prove your incapability of functioning at the level of a competent adult, the experience could be harrowing. Your commitment to sharing a house/apartment/ extra-large 1960s Volkswagen van will require daily upholding of roommate values, which will be easier to follow if they’re laid out beforehand. Continually harboring unspoken resentments that will eventually blow up in your faces and wind up on some “Roommate Brawls” subreddit do not make for a suitable living environment. With this pledge for cooperative living, we concur that paying rent on time, announcing visitors in advance, keeping doors closed during winter (we’re not trying to heat the neighborhood) and keeping out of each other’s designated food cabinets will contribute to a mutually beneficial roommate relationship.
