WORDS BY KELSEY T DELANEY IDBALL, REA & KA RA FAGAN
1. Make a budget before you go.
It’s important to allocate money for expenditures like food, souvenirs, excursions and more. If you give yourself an outline for how much to spend ahead of time, you can avoid blowing your entire budget halfway through the program.
2. If you can, step away from the program sometimes.
The activities you do with your program will be great, but it’s important to find your own experiences when you can. Whether you take a weekend to travel or just explore on your own for an afternoon, it will enhance your experience to find your own way occasionally.
3. Pack Light.
Pack lighter than you think you should. I promise you will not need that extra pair of shoes or that hat you may or may not wear once. You’ll thank me when you’re lugging your suitcase through the metro past hundreds of people and up hundreds of stairs.
4. Keep a journal.

If you can, record everything in writing. Set aside at least 20 minutes at the end or beginning of each day to record your day and your thoughts. Not only is it a great keepsake, but it will also help you stay sane.

Studying abroad has been on my to do list ever since I was in high school. I had always heard it was experience of a lifetime, and that an ’s exactly what it was. In the sum mer of 2017, I had the opportunity on a five-week program to London to go for journalism. The classes that I attended, which were at least onc day, included The Culture of Spo ea rts in the U.K. and International New s. The content that we learned was very fascinating and something that I greatly enjoyed. Besides just sittin g in a room for classes, we went excursions and trips to places inclu on ding the Chelsea FC stadium, Sha kespeare’s Globe, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, a cricket match at The Oval, the World Paralympic Championships, the Guardian new the Wimbledon Championships. spaper and The Wimbledon tennis match was my personal favorite because it was the Fourth of July. The main reas during on why I absolutely loved this trip is because of the relationships I mad other UO students. I made friendsh e with ips with people that I am still curr ently close with and we were able on many adventures during our time to go in London. Some of these included Brighton Beach, the famous restaura Sketch, an Ice bar and rooftop bars nt , the London Eye and Big Ben, picn ics in Primrose Park and Cereal Kille Cafe. We also went to a popular r underground restaurant/bar calle d Gordon’s Wine Bar, which was my favorite places because of its one of history. Also, everyone in the prog ram had the opportunity to travel weekends with friends and experie on the nce different cultures. I was able to take weekend trips to Scotlan with a few people I had just met d and Paris and it was such an exhilarating exp erience. All in all, this trip to Lon my eyes in many ways that I will don opened always remember and appreciate and recommend to absolutely eve thinking about it. I heard about the ryone program from the study abroad fair and on the Global Education Ore website. You can apply by March gon 15 for the next trip in summer 201 8.

Sometimes you grow tired of going to the same places over and over again to eat out. You want to branch out and find some new places to hang out and grub out. We know this struggle all too well, so we went out to find a few of the hidden gems around campus.
MAME
541 Blair Blvd.
If sushi is your thing, Mame is the place to be with its stellar sushi and cozy atmosphere. It’s a great place to relax and wind down after a long day after class. They even have vegetarian dishes for those who might want something other than seafood. Try out their cheesecakes for an elevated experience. Mame is open from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, but make sure to make a reservation in advance to get a spot at the small eatery. Prices range from $15 to $30.
Sweet Life Patisserie 755 Monroe St.
With two locations, it is super easy to jet off to this bakery for some yummy treats because sometimes baked goods are all we need to make a day better. Sweet Life Patisserie is a cute and cozy bakery with multiple options for gluten and dairyfree treats, as well as an inclusive menu filled with cupcakes, wedding cakes, espresso, teas and other pastries. Some of their ‘Desserts of the Month’ include red velvet cupcakes and their dairy-free, gluten-free and egg-free chocolate strawberry cupcakes.
The Jail
490 E Broadway Have you ever thought about going to jail before and the experience you’d gain? If so, you just might want to go stop in and order some grub. With reasonably priced delicious Korean-style barbeque, you can’t go wrong by taking your family on a trip to The Jail. It’s a great choice if you love pho, as it has many pho meal options, including pho ga (chicken breast) and their house special pho. It will be a memory to keep for sure. It’s open Monday through Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Hideaway Bakery
3377 E. Amazon Dr.
Are you looking for that one random, out-of-theway place to impress your friends with? Why not go on down to the Hideaway Bakery? It has a robust menu filled with great breads, cookies, pastas and much more. This unique bakery serves pizza ranging from $5.25 to $14. If you’ve got a hankering for a sweet tooth, try out a slice of Hideaway Chocolate Cake.
AMBROSIA
174 East Broadway Are you looking to head out to an elegant restaurant but don’t want to break the bank completely? Try Ambrosia, an Italian-styled restaurant. If you’re looking to enhance your flavor profile, try the Rabbit Manicotti for $18. If you’re not looking to try something new, tuck into a slice of Pizza Tre Formaggio for only $13. While food is their game, wine is their specialty. They have a wine list that can cater to anyone with many wines from Italy, Oregon and many other parts of the world.
SWEET CHEEKS TASTING ROOM 5th Street Market
Not looking for a meal but you really want to do something fun with your friends or loved one? Try out the Sweet Cheeks Tasting Room at the 5th Street Market for some wine. Their indoor tasting room has a cozy cabin feel, complete with couches and fireplace. You can sample their Reserve Pinot Noir for $3 or any other wine for $1. They also provide live music Friday nights from 6 p.m to 8 p.m during the year, and on Saturdays during the summer.
LAUGHING PLANET 4802, 760 Blair Blvd.
Didn’t anyone ever tell you that laughing is good for the soul? Not only will you not be able to stop laughing, you’ll be able to eat some great food at a great price. We recommend grabbing yourself a simple burrito for only $5.50.

Words by Kara Fagan
e’ve all seen those movies about high-strung and overthe-top sorority girls packed into one house driving each other crazy. Your mind wanders to movies like “The House Bunny” and “Sydney White.” You may ask, is it really like that? The idea of being in a sorority and living in the house might come with many questions and frantic fears as you enter college. Let me give you an insight to a real experience of living in a house with 60 girls by telling you my personal experience. I got to live in a cozy room (that my best friend and I decorated by ourselves) and would wake up every morning to a home-cooked breakfast. I would walk to class with around four other girls and then would come back to another warm home-cooked meal with an array of options. Some of these included tacos with rice and beans, baked potato bar, thai peanut pulled pork (my personal favorite) or chicken fajitas. But if you’re a health fanatic, no worries. Many houses, like mine, have healthier menu options for those who are on a stricter diet. These include gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan choices. Believe me when I say the meals are just one of the many perks of living in a sorority house. One big question to ask yourself: Do you enjoy being around people a good amount of time throughout the day? Would you like people popping in your room every once in awhile just to say what’s up? Would you like to work on homework with four or five people in the living room? Are you someone who likes to
have movie night whenever you want with some of your favorite people? While these are things many extroverted people love to do, they are not something to worry about for those of you who enjoy your alone time. I greatly enjoy my alone time and I was able to have time to myself, while also being able to walk down the hall and sit in my friend’s room to either talk about our day or watch a movie. My favorite nights were those when some of us would get in our pajamas and snuggle up downstairs to watch Grey’s Anatomy or The Bachelor (which was almost every night). When it came to school work, I would either find a quiet spot around the house to study on my own or would meet downstairs with around three other girls in the same class to work as a group. The best part about living in was that I made lasting friendships that I definitely could not get through college without. I always had someone to talk to or easily relate with about something going on in my life. However, some signs that show living in may not be for you are if you don’t like having meals at a set time, people asking to borrow your clothes, having to do some chores around the house or girls running into your room in the middle of the day. Living in a sorority house may not be for everyone. However, it is an experience that should definitely be considered. From random midnight snacks to going out together as a big squad, living in has many positives and perks for college women.
