FRATERNITY AND SORORITY LIFE ducks go greek

Fraternities and sororities are value-based organizations that focus on the development of members through leadership, scholarship, brotherhood and sisterhood, service, and building community among their members. These values form the basis of members’ college experience. Being a part of the fraternity and sorority community means holding yourself to a higher standard of commitment. It means being a part of a community based on shared values that works to support its members to be the best version of themselves and positively contribute to our world. It means being a part of a legacy for years to come. The University of Oregon offers a variety of ways to get involved in a fraternal experience and each chapter in our community has unique characteristics. Two of our communities, our National Pan-Hellenic Council and our Multicultural Greek Council, promote the awareness of multicultural identities in the collegiate experience and foster the continued development of these identities in its members. The purpose is to provide a forum that allows for the free exchange of ideas, programs, and services between its constituent fraternities and sororities; to promote the awareness of multicultural diversity in the college, the surrounding communities, and the greater community at large, and to support and promote the works of it's member organizations.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) represents the nine historically black Greek letter organizations, commonly referred to as the Divine Nine. NPHC serves as the cornerstone for bonding and collaboration between its members and organizations. Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) promotes the fraternal experience by fostering values, leadership and cultural awareness. Our MGC chapters all represent a cultural experience and seeking to continually develop the experience of their members.

Duck Life 2019

If I have one piece of advice for future Ducks, it would be this:

LEAVE THE BUBBLE.

The “bubble” I’m referring to is the invisible dome-like structure that surrounds the University of Oregon campus and the few blocks around, sucking you in to a monotonous lifestyle of sameness: Caspian, class, Espresso Roma, Walton, class, Carson Dining, Carson lounge, sleep, repeat. Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with this, except that you’re just not really exploring the small city that’s hosting you: Eugene. You’re a student and that’s just about it. I get it: It’s convenient. You go to class, you want to walk to class, you want to do everything within a few blocks of that class. Live. Eat. Exercise. There’s a certain comfort that goes along with this safeness. But, (for fear of appearing dramatic) there’s a certain kind of sadness, too. When you go beyond that invisible barrier, you explore the Eugene that doesn’t leave once spring terms ends, that population that has families, or no families, and gardens, and dogs, and block parties, and art galleries, and artsy movie theaters, and sizzling pizza pies and tea houses. Basically, you miss out on so much. Downtown Eugene has all the best qualities of a larger city, with the welcoming atmosphere of a small town. With world-class pizzerias, artisan craft stores and more places to buy shoes than you’ll ever need, downtown Eugene is a must-visit part of the town you’ll call home for at least four years.

SIZZLE PIE

KILLER BURGER

OFF THE WAFFLE

Best cheap pizza in town. No doubt about it. Their slogan is “Eat Pizza Everyday” and you might just want to do that once you go here. They have several options for toppings and a great salad and slice combo deal. And because it’s open until 4 a.m. on weekends and 3 a.m. on weekdays, it’s the perfect place for a greasy-food study break. There’s also a great outdoor seating area during those months when, you know, the sun decides to shine.

Here’s the thing about this burger joint: Every. Burger. Has. Bacon. Oh, what, you’re still reading? These are the best burgers in town, and for a reason: Killer Burger doesn’t fool around with basic, single-topping burgers. If you’re eating here, you’d better expect burgers with peanut butter and pickles, burgers with fiery Sriracha BBQ sauce and fried jalapenos, burgers with an entire breakfast piled on top -- at Killer Burger, you go big or you go home.

Off-the-Waffle is page one of Downtown Eugene. If you don’t know where to start when exploring the area, start here. Whether you’re in the mood for a sweet waffle creation, a more savory breakfast, or even something in between, Off the Waffle will be the waffle of your eye. Their menu includes a variety of authentic Liège waffles, including “Goat in Headlights” and “Braise of Glory.” You’ll have to see for yourself to find out what those titles mean. (Or just check their online menu.)

SHOE-A-HOLIC

VOODOO DONUTS

PASSION FLOWER

As a college student, you’ll find yourself in need of a wider variety of shoes than ever. Trying a new sport for intramurals? You’ll need some quality running or athletic shoes. Joining a formal, black tie organization? No more sneakers, you need some dress shoes. Even if you just need a new pair of Vans because the duct tape on your old pair is falling apart, Shoe-a-Holic has all these shoe varieties and more.

This Portland food staple has made its way into our very own Downtown Eugene, which is great news for any donut lover who hates waiting in line to get their pastry fix. Now, you can head downtown to get yourself an iconic, hot-pink donut box piled high with Voodoo Donuts classics. The unique topping and, well, shapes of these donuts set them apart from your typical pastry shop, making these treats an experience to remember for more than your taste buds.

The next time you need flowers for any occasion, and I mean LITERALLY any occasion, your best bet is Passionflower. Their shop creates unique floral arrangements suited for any of your special event needs. To make matters even easier, you can order and send flowers through their website. On top of their floral selection, Passionflower’s eclectic collection of jewelry, clothing, home decor and more will keep you coming back for more. Duck Life 2019

PLANK TOWN

WASHBURNE CAFE

Located in the heart of downtown Springfield, Plank Town’s restaurant and brewery is a great place to start when exploring the city’s restaurants. They’ve taken up residence in a newly-restored Springfield restaurant, the Odd Fellows building. With a host of handcrafted microbrews on tap and Northwestinspired, locally-sourced menu items like the popular pan-fried Steelhead salmon and oyster Po’ Boy, you won’t want your first visit to Planktown to be your last.

This is one coffee shop you might end up spending hours in if you’re not careful. The Washburne cafe is a specialty coffee house and handmade goods merchant. They serve coffee from Slightly Coffee in Eugene, fostering a connection from their community to ours. For food, Washburne offers pastries made fresh in house daily, gluten-free options from local bakers and a rotating menu of breakfast and lunch plates.

THE PUMP

Imagine you’re on a cross-country road trip. You’re on the Northwest leg of your journey, and you’re just passing through Springfield when you realize that you need some grub. Look no further than The Pump! This is a classic Americanstyle cafe that’s perfect for a quick bite for breakfast or lunch. It’s great food at the right price.

Sprout is a regional food hub where with several food options under one roof. Located inside an quaint, historic church, it’s a charming spot to grab some German comfort good, a latin meal, or baked goods made only from locally sourced ingredients. The atmosphere is unique and friendly with a beautiful courtyard and plenty of outdoor seating for sunny days and it’s only 2 blocks away from the EMX station, so it’s a quick ride from campus!

GAME DAY ESSENTIALS The leaves are changing, school is almost back in session, and football is finally back! After a long, staggering offseason, the Ducks are back in Autzen Stadium and the fans are ready to follow suit. When you’re packing up for Saturday night football, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and pre-game celebrations and end up stuck without something important 500-deep in the student section. Check out these gameday essentials for tips and tricks to making every gameday a great day!

Duck Gear (in rain or shine) Hydration is a Major Key Collect your pom-poms, grab those green and yellow leggings and slap on some face stickers – it’s game day, and it’s time to represent the Ducks. There’s nothing more welcoming than walking in the gates to a sea of green and yellow, so it’s important everyone joins in. You can pick up unique, spirited duck gear of all kinds at the local Hirons or Fred Meyer for a great bargain price, or head over to the Duck Store for name-brand Duck gear! Remember: it may never rain in Autzen stadium, but juuust in case… be prepared, and carry an umbrella or a raincoat with you.

40

|

Duck Life 2019

Regardless of the temperature outside, it can be a pretty tiring job standing in the student section cheering your heart out for four quarters. It’s always an option to grab a quick water from one of the many vendors inside the stadium, save a few dollars and bring your own bottle! Pack a lightweight bottle with handfuls of ice and your favorite flavor to stay refreshed and ready to go all day long. Remember to make sure they’re clear and visible, or security won’t let it through the front doors.

Sunscreen Even on the cloudiest day in the stadium, it can take a tough toll on your skin to stand outside with no

protection after a long afternoon. Rub some SPF 15 on vulnerable places like your nose, ears or the back of your neck to protect them from the hot sun. For the makeup wearers out there, look for foundations or moisturizers that have SPF built in to make it even easier!

Bring a Buddy No one wants to go alone, and the whole day will get better when you’re surrounded by your fellow Ducklings. Bring your friends, a camera to document some sweet group selfies, and arrive early to the game to get a spot in the front – maybe you’ll make it on the big screen. Be sure you bring your student ID to get into the student section together!

Top 10 College Life Hacks WORDS | LAUREN BRUCE & MICHAEL DAVIES

1. Put your phone in a glass or ceramic cup to amplify sound

Some of us are heavy sleepers. Unfortunately, it doesn’t help when you’re running on little sleep and don’t want to get up anyway. One quick idea is to put your phone in a cup or mug, with the speaker facing the bottom of the cup. This will amplify the sound and (hopefully) wake you up. Want to take it a step further? Place your phone in the cup across the room, so you’ll be forced to get up to turn it off. You can also use this to play music a little louder than your phone’s speaker can typically handle.

2. File your clothes to save space

When you fold your clothes the traditional way, not only are you digging to find your favorite shirt and messing up your piles, but you’re also losing precious space. By filing your shirts, you save space and time, and it looks pretty cool too. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to close that drawer? Yeah. Thought so. To fold a shirt for filing, first lay it face down. Then fold it in half. Next, fold both sleeves over so they’re on top of each other, then take the top half of the shirt, fold it over twice and you should have a little rectangle of a shirt that you can now successfully file away.

3. Hang wrinkled shirts in the shower

Have an important event or just an overly wrinkled shirt? Short on time? Hang your shirt on a hanger in your bathroom when you shower. The steam from your shower 44

|

Duck Life 2019

should remove the wrinkles from your clothes so by the time you’re done showering you’ll be that much closer to being ready to go.

4. Organize your notes with colors

Oftentimes, note taking can be boring and unorganized. To stay more organized, use a different colored highlighter for each section, or create a key. Use one color to highlight definitions, another for key points, and another for important names and dates. Make sure you create a key to help you keep track. This can particularly help you understand concepts better if you’re a visual learner. Changing colors will keep you attentive and help you study better for tests.

5. Use a binder clip to organize desk cords

Desk cords can be messy, confusing, tangly, and just overall annoying. Keep them organized and within reach by attaching a binder clip to the edge of your desk and labeling the clip with what the cord corresponds to. Just take the cord and slip it through the metal clasps on the clip to hold it in place. Then take a small piece of paper and tape and label each cord with “laptop,” “phone” etc.

6. Put dryer sheets on your fan

Air fresheners and sprays can sometimes be too fruity or fragrant when you’re just trying to freshen up a room. So next time you just want a fresh, clean smell, tape a couple dryer sheets to your fan and put it on a low setting.

7. Turn your phone/computer into warm light in order to fall asleep faster after studying late Blue artificial light can worsen your quality of sleep, but what about that paper you needed to write before your 8AM the next day? Shifting the hues on your phone and laptop can help you get to sleep faster. On your iPhone, you can go to settings/display, brightness, then turn on “Night Shift.” Although it’s also accessible in the control center, you can also get an app for your computer called Flux, which is free and will do the same thing.

8. Use snack rewards for hard assignments

Reading can be really hard to get through, especially when you know there’s something more fun you could be doing. Give yourself a little motivation! Pick your favorite candy or treat and reward yourself after each section of reading you do. You can go by paragraphs, pages, or chapters depending on how big your reward is.

9. Use soda can tabs to save closet space This is a great tip to reuse your old soda tabs and also save space in your closet. After removing a tab from your favorite drink, slip one metal hook of a coat hanger through one of the holes. Then get another coat hanger and slip it through the other hole of the soda tab. Hang one of the hangers on as normal.

10. Use ornament sorting cardboard to sort socks in drawer

Ornament sorting cardboard is a great way to create sectionals in drawers. Since you can add or remove a section, It allows you to sort socks, underwear, shirts, pants or anything else you might need. A second option is to use a six pack container. Cut the cardboard in half so that the handle is cut off and should fit into your drawer perfectly.

Bacon, Sausage, Pepperoni, Oh My!

Track Town Pizza Words by Skyla Patton | Photos by Lauren Bruce

W

e all have memories of our parents and grandparents reminiscing out loud about their favorite places to go when they were young; the bowling alley they visited every Friday, the perfect sightseeing point for date night and, of course, the tastiest pies around. For many Eugene residents and even out-of-towners, Track Town Pizza is the pizza parlour that they can’t wait to get back to. Entering Track Town Pizza is like stepping into a time machine and coming out where the grass is truly greener. Original walls adorned with sports fare and autographed photos of some of the world’s greatest athletes, this classic pizza parlour will relax you from the craziness of the real world and leave you feeling nostalgic and satisfied. “We have a huge out-of-town following. People coming in from Portland or Seattle, even California, they’re coming to Eugene, they’re coming for Track Town Pizza,” says Tim Hill, long-time employee and general manager of Track Town Pizza. “They’ll stop in Eugene on their way through just to get our pizza.” Maintaining historical memorabilia and respecting antiquity is important to Track Town, and they make sure it reflects in all aspects of the restaurant. The majority of the menu items are the original flavors and combos that were offered when the restaurant opened in 1977. Offering a plethora of beers on tap, a loaded salad bar and pizzas for all taste pallets and restrictions, Track Town is sure to satisfy everyone at the table. “Tom Happy still comes in and gets pizza here,” says Hill, referencing one of the original owners of Track Town Pizza from back in the day. The dedication at Track Town Pizza isn’t limited to their decorum and menu options either. Each pizza is lovingly handmade by long-time employees, made up of fresh produce, house sauce and dough made from scratch every day. Good pizza is so much more than slapping some mozzarella and Progresso on dough, and the chefs at Track Town take that to heart as they craft each individual pie. “I’ve been working here for 12 years now, and it’s just so much fun. I had my first pizza here — the 100 Yard Dash — when I was a high school senior,” reminisced Hill on his time at the parlour. “It’s stuck with me and has been my favorite ever since.” Canadian bacon, pepperoni, sausage, oh my! “I think the majority of people when you ask them what their favorite food is, the answer is pizza. Pizza does not fail very much, it always does well, and people will like it if you put out a good product, and we make good pizza,” says Hill. As if making delicious pizza for generations and a whole community isn’t enough, Track Town takes it a step further and ensures they are giving the love back to Eugene. Pizzas are regularly donated for fundraising events throughout the surrounding areas, and each year Track Town partners with different groups to raise thousands of dollars for local nonprofits and organizations alike.

Finally, the shining star of Track Town Pizza (besides, of course, the pizza) is their close relationship to the athletic history of the university and their namesake: Track Town USA. “We had a couple of athletes here for the 2016 Olympic Trials here eating with their families, and they were sitting underneath photos of them framed from probably the 80s,” says Hill excitedly. “They ended up autographing the photos, and those photos are still on the wall. Now whenever an athlete comes here and their photo is on the wall, I’m like, ‘you gotta sign it!’” This hometown pizza parlour represents the incredible roster of athletes that have come out of the University of Oregon, and has developed a close relationship with many of them over time. This only serves to add to the quintessential ambiance of Track Town Pizza, sealing the deal with framed and autographed photos by some of Oregon’s greatest. “People feel like this is the home of track and field. The feel of those people being here, representing Oregon, and it’s just really cool to have them here,” concluded Hill. Whether you’re looking for sports history, a lunch or dinner spot for the whole family or just some darn good pizza, Track Town Pizza is the place for you.
