Groovy Date Words by Skyla Patton | Photo by Andrew Sakuda Whether it’s a first date or the millionth with your special someone, picking a date idea or location can be a stressful experience; and a crucial aspect of how well the date goes. Traditional date spots or date nights are fun and it’s understandable to slide into a routine, but there’s nothing wrong with spicing it up sometimes! Check out these suggestions on how to make date night the coolest one yet.

Couples River Float Everyone loves floating down the river in the heat of summer, but pairing it with your loved one and a cooler full of snacks and drinks is hard to beat. Investing in a double tube will make for an awesome river toy and an even cooler date night with your significant other. Double tubes feature a builtin cooler in the center and two inner tubes connected at a convenient footsie-playing distance so you never have to be far apart, even when the current gets a little rough.

LED Picnic This is a hit for impressing a first date or bringing back the spark once you’re many dates deep. Summertime is prime time for picnics and outdoor munching, but also the height of fire season, so a key feature of this plan is using LED candles or light strings rather than a fire or flame candles. Pick up a string of fairy lights and artfully place them around your picnic blanket to create a romantic ambiance (and a perfect setting for Instagram photos.) Head to Skinner’s Butte or Owen Rose Garden for a beautiful view and really “wow” your date with your tastefulness and sandwich-making skills.

Water Balloon Battle While albeit less ooey-gooey than other dates, staging the largest water balloon fight of the century is a great way to laugh with your loved one and quite literally stay cool during the heat of the summer. All you need is a pack of balloons, easily grabbed at the Dollar Store or Walmart, and a water faucet to wage this war of love. For extra fun, add a few drops of non toxic clothing dye into the balloons before filling them and wear a white t-shirt to create a lasting piece of clothing that recounts the hilarious battle — and shows who the victor was.

Museum Tour If you’re looking for something more mellow (and potentially air conditioned), head to the local museums around town for an educational and relaxed date setting. Learning about local and global history is a very cool thing to do, and an easy way to impress your date with your scholarly attitude and worldly personality. There are dozens located in Eugene, including the Jordan Schnitzer, Lane County Historical Museum and the Eugene Science Center. Be sure to ask for student discounts at the door!

TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL:

a Summer Bucket List

Words by Skyla Patton | Photo by Sarah Northrop

September is creeping up around the corner, and no matter how fast you run it can’t be avoided: school will be back in session soon. But, alas, summer is not over yet! Rather than fearing the impending due dates and class schedule, make the last few weeks the best ones yet and get the final bang out of your buck this summer. Check out these 5 goal suggestions to set for yourself to ensure you have the coolest summer yet. PA G E 6

1. Hike a Mountain

Yes, we said it: hike a mountain! Start out with this lofty goal and everything afterwards will be a smooth downhill stroll (pun intended). Exercising is not only great for you, but reaching a summit, no matter how high, is a euphoria and elation we all love. Set your alarm for an early time you’ve always dreaded, pack a bag of snacks and water and head up to Spencer’s Butte or Eula Ridge to gain some elevation and a new perspective.

2. Go to The River - once a week!

Lots of students continue their career over the summer or already have a jampacked schedule, whether it be all work or all fun. It can make the summer fly by, and we’ve all found ourselves sitting smack-dab in September with no clue how it happened so fast. An easy way to deter this feeling and get the full summertime experience is to make a mini-bucketlist of river spots you’ve been dying to check out. There are dozens of river systems and swimming holes all under an hour drive of Eugene, like Dexter or Cougar reservoir and the plethora of spots located on the Willamette River.

3. Buy New Concert Tix

Coachella, Willamette Valley Music Festival, Lollapalooza, oh my! The summer is overflowing with music-viewing opportunities and shows, and it doesn’t slow down any time soon. Hitting a concert you’ve been dying to go see or checking out an artist you’ve never heard of before can make for equally enthralling shows and a great evening with friends. Websites like Ticketfly have all the details on large-scale concerts and venues, but don’t forget to check out local sites like the WOW Hall or Hi-Fi Lounge for local artists and shows selling for fair prices.

4. Take Yourself to Lunch

Treat yo’ self day may not be until October, but it’s never a bad time to take yourself on a super cool date. Self care is easy to overlook sometimes but is so crucial to a happy and healthy you. On your next day off or free Sunday, don’t make any plans with anyone but yourself, and then treat your mind and body to the best day ever. Go to your favorite lunch or dinner spot, buy your favorite food (and dessert) and really savor every moment with your own bad self. If you wanna go all the way, finish off the day with a bath bomb and your favorite beverage in the tub or pool. There’s not much cooler than loving yourself, right?

5. Do Something You’ve Never Done Before

Okay, so this one is a little more vague, but it’s the true key to unlocking a really, really cool summer finale. Stepping outside of your comfort zone can be incredibly difficult, more for some than others, but has massive potential for opening up your normal box and literally expanding your world. It doesn’t have to be a huge, life-altering decision, it can be something as simple as trying a new restaurant or saying hello to a stranger in the EMU. Testing your limits, reaching out to others and proving to yourself that you can do things you never thought you could is the definition of being cool.

students

What is cool?

Ryan Killeen (Junior)

Matthew McGonegal (Senior) Anthony Albrecht (Junior) “Playing Fortnite with my friends is fun. It allows me to connect with my friends without actually seeing them. And a lot of college kids are into EDM music, not me personally though.”

PA G E 8

We asked current and former University of Oregon students what is, and what was cool while at school. Here’s what they said:

“The PeaceHealth bikes are really cool. We like to ride down to the river on hot days and relax or have a drink at Taylor’s or Renie’s.”

Skyler Howe (Junior): “The ‘vintage style’ clothes are really popular right now along with athleisure wear.”

“When it comes to fashion, people are dressing like the cast of Stranger Things. With music, it’s a lot of Indie, EDM, and rap music that stands out.”

AT SCHOOL Interview and Photos by Andrew Sakuda

What was cool?

Brian Wright (1988-1992) “Word processors were huge. It was a midway point between typewriters and computers. Creating mixtapes was also really big along with the (Sony) Discman. Renting CDs was huge.”

Mandy Chong (1998-2000, 2000-2001) “It was just when our football team started to be good and so we had to schedule our lives around getting football tickets. We had to wake up at 6 a.m. on Fridays to line up and get football tickets.”

“Hair was really big. Some of the fashions are similar to what the girls wear now - leggings, Converse high tops, Adidas Stan Smith, etc.”

Jennifer Archer (1989-1991)

Steven Asbury (1993-1997) “A 90s college fraternity party wasn’t complete without Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and some techno music. Nirvana, Pearl Jam and grunge rock were also topping the charts.”

What better way to stay cool and healthy this summer then by drinking a delicious homemade smoothie! These smoothies are perfect for breakfast, snacks and even desserts! We have combined a list of smoothie recipes that we recommend you try at home this summer.

SMOOTHIE. Words by Keven Salazar | Photo Creative Commons

Strawberry Mango Smoothie: The first smoothie on our list is a great source of fiber as well as a great nutritious breakfast or snack! Ingredients:

1 cup of strawberries 1 cup peeled and cut mango 1 cup of plain yogurt 5 Ice cubes

Directions:

First, place strawberries and mango in the blender. Add yogurt and ice cubes on top and begin to blend well for around 25 seconds. Serve up and enjoy!

Spinach/Peach Smoothie: Our second smoothie recipe is the peach spinach smoothie. This smoothie is a perfect drink for when you’re soaking up the sun, or even after a workout. It’s a simple and easy drink to make. Ingredients: Some baby spinach 2 cups of sliced peaches 1 1/2 cup of water 1 teaspoon of grated peeled ginger 2 teaspoons of honey

Directions: Grab a handful of spinach, and throw it in the blender along with the rest of the ingredients. Blend well until it turns into a liquid with no large visible chunks. When it’s ready, throw in five ice cubes and blend for eight seconds, and you should get a cool refreshing smoothie!

Blueberry Smoothie:

This recipe is perfect for berry lovers, such as myself. Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups of frozen blueberries 3/4 cups of water 2 teaspoons of sugar 1 cup of chopped pineapple 1 orange, cut into squares and seeded

Breakfast Smoothie:

This recipe is a great choice for a morning smoothie, as it is packed with spinach, vitamins and minerals, which will help you function your best throughout the day. Ingredients:

Directions:

1/2 cup of baby spinach 1 banana 1/2 cup sliced strawberries, blueberries, or chopped mangos. 1/4 cup of plain yogurt 1/2 unsweetened almond milk 1 tablespoon of almond butter

Place all ingredients in blender until blended. If the smoothie comes out too thin, you can thicken it by adding an additional handful of ice cubes. If it comes out too thick, you can thin it with a bit more almond milk.

High Protein Fruit Smoothie:

For our last recipe, we will show you how to make a high protein fruit smoothie. This smoothie is a perfect post-workout smoothie. This recipe can be a hit or miss, depending on the brand of protein that is used, flavor and consistency. Ingredients:

1 cup unsweetened almond milk 1/2 cup pineapple 1/2 cup mango 1 1/2 scoop of protein powder

Directions: Blend this well in a kitchen blender, and enjoy.

Words by Hilary Kearns | Photo by Andrew Sakuda While many students leave campus for the summer, others are taking classes, working on campus, or volunteering through the university. To keep from being bored and to keep cool, students and staff turn to the EMU to hang out and enjoy a wide variety of activities. Here are five cool things to do at the EMU while escaping the summer heat.

1. UO’s Outdoor Program For those moments when you need to get away from campus, the Outdoor Program is a great way to get outside and exercise. For starters, you can rent tubes or rafts and take a refreshing float down the scenic Willamette River. The program also offers a bike shop and rental barn, where you can rent bikes and pedal along the many miles of paths and trails on and off campus. And get this, the bike shop is free for all students! Simply sign in, bring your bike in, and learn how to fix a flat in the fix-it-yourself shop, facilitated by helpful mechanics. The Outdoor Program also provides a library full of videos and trip planning guides, along with staff run events, such as “Intro to Backpacking.” Trips are student or community-led. If you want to plan your own trip, fill out a form at the office, EMU 008, stating what you want to do. It will then be posted online, and a pre-trip meeting will take place. “If you initiate a trip, gear for you is free, and it is 50 percent off for others on the trip,” said Violet Fox, a senior student who works for the program.

3. Food and Beverages

4. Play the Piano

Take a break indoors for lunch or a cold drink at one of the many restaurants and retailers inside the EMU. Chipotle is a favorite among students and offers quick service. Falling Sky Pizzeria is cool both in temperature and in its low-key atmosphere. If you’re looking for fresh burgers cooked on the grill, Joe’s Burgers is the way to go. Panda Express and Subway are favorites as well, and are a popular meal for lunch. For additional options, turn to the Fresh Corner Market. Mediterranean bowls, daily soups, and pre-packaged snacks are a great way to get a quick, healthy bite to eat. If you are wanting to cool off with a drink and need that infusion of caffeine, Starbucks offers iced coffees, smoothies, and many other caffeinated beverages. Townshend’s Tea Company on the ground floor offers a variety of unique and different blends that will please your palate. And coming this fall will be the exciting addition of Jamba Juice, specializing in fruit smoothies, juices and bowls. Along with food options, U.S. Bank and The Duck Store are also located in the EMU to serve student’s banking and retail needs.

Fun fact: The EMU hires two to three students to play the piano throughout the week in the first floor lounge area. The piano is also available for anyone wanting to play for fun, and the enjoyment of others. The piano is also historical. “It is one of the original pieces of equipment of the 1950 EMU building,” said EMU’s Assistant Director of Retail Services Dan Geiger. The piano was restored and tuned up and is still creating beautiful music that everyone can appreciate.

5. Get Crafty The Craft Center offers ceramics, wood-working, jewelry making, and much more. As a student, you can get a Term Pass, which allows access to the studios, tools, and facilities throughout the term. There’s even a free Pop-up Workshop, which is held every Friday. Most workshop classes are held in late afternoon or early evening, which makes it easy to work around a class schedule.

2. Get Some Sunshine The EMU offers many places to hang outside of the building as well. There are hammocks available for any time you want to lay down, read a book, or take a nap in the sun. There is also ample outdoor patio space where you can take your lunch, or simply hang out and chat with friends while getting some vitamin D. Umbrellas are available at the patio tables for those who burn easily from the sun, but still like to enjoy the warm, summer weather. M O N D AY, AU G U S T 2 0 , 2 0 1 8 |

Stay Cool

Words by Keven Salazar Photo by Creative Commons

Fru it Sal ad Fruit salads are one of those foods which can be eaten on different occasions and are perfect for cooling you off during hot summer days. Your basic fruit salad bowl consists of: • 1 sliced banana • Handful of blueberries • 5 cut strawberries • 1 orange cut into slices • 1 cup diced pineapple • A small handful grapes. To finish off this fruit salad, sprinkle some chia seeds on top, and Voilà, you have yourself a refreshing and delicious cool fruit salad.

Fru it Skewe rs Another great cool ‘Grab-and-Go’ food to make this summer are fruit skewers! For this simple recipe you will need: • 5 wooden skewers (we’re just sticking with the number five) • Diced watermelon • Diced pineapple • Squared Feta cheese • Thinly sliced cucumber Thread each piece unto each skewer in this order: watermelon, cheese, cucumber and pineapple. This combination makes for a delicious snack which will leave you feeling refreshed.

Parfait Parfaits are well known for their cool and healthy elements. They are one of those foods that can be called a breakfast, snack, and dessert all at the same time! For this recipe you’ll need: • 1/2 cup of granola • Sliced strawberries • 1 cup of vanilla yogurt (Swiss, Greek or regular vanilla yogurt work perfect) • Handful of berries Pour the yogurt in a cup, add strawberries, berries and stir. Sprinkle granola on top and enjoy! PA G E 1 6

With the record-breaking heat this summer, it is now more important than ever to stay hydrated and cool throughout the day. To help keep you cool and healthy through the rest of the summer, follow these simple food recipes:

BANANA M i lkshake A milkshake is one of those foods we all love, especially during the summer heat. For this recipe we will walk you through how to make a good banana milkshake. For this you’ll need: • 1 and a half bananas • 1 cup of milk • 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream • 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon or vanilla extract. Tear each banana in thirds to make it easier to blend, and then add ice cream, and vanilla extract. Add milk and blend well. Now serve up and enjoy a thick refreshing milkshake!

SU M M E R Sal ad Our last recipe will be a simple tossed salad which can stand alone, or be accompanied by something else for a perfect lunch! For this you will need: • 1 small red onion • 1 cucumber • 1 avocado • 4 tomatoes

• Fresh cilantro • Olive oil • Two lemons • Black pepper and salt.

To make this salad, cut up fresh cilantro and add it to a bowl. Dice cucumber, avocado, tomatoes and red onion. Drizzle some olive oil on the salad, then sprinkle a pinch of salt along with black pepper. Now squeeze lemon juice on top and then toss the salad with tongs.

Hacks for Helping Your Pets Avoid the Heat Keep Your House Cool (Or Try To)

No matter how much we enjoy days by the pool or floats on the river, the peak temperatures of summer can start to get to even the best of us and wear us down. While the numbers skyrocket as we get closer to the end of the break, more of us linger by the AC and less of us take to the hills for hikes and adventures. You may be breaking a sweat walking to the grocery store, but unfortunately our furry friends aren’t safe either: pets and other animals suffer just as much (if not more) than us during the particularly sweaty days of the summer. Check out these tips on how to keep your little buddies cool during the heat waves.

Check the Concrete! Exercise is great for you and your dog (or the occasional leash trained cat), but have you ever unthinkingly stepped outside sans-shoes and received a scorched foot in exchange? We have sneakers and flip flops to guard us on evening strolls, but most often, our pets suffer through burning-hot sidewalks with no way to let us know; bro, it’s hot! Chewy.com offers a wide range of animal booties to help protect their feet, but there’s a few tricks to help avoid the hot pavement sans dog shoes if booties really just aren’t Spot’s look. Place the back of your hand on the sidewalk: if you can’t comfortably keep it there for more than 10 seconds, it’s too hot for your pup. Walking on grass can drop the ground temp by several degrees, or just avoid taking mid-day adventures and opt for the cooler temperatures of the mornings and evenings. PA G E 1 8

We know the pains of running an air conditioner on our electric bills, but we all took the same sacred oath to treat our furry friends like kings and queens despite monetary cost. We may be able to escape to the cool mall or a shaded river spot, but our pets anxiously waiting at home will melt in the stuffiness of a closed up house in the meantime. Setting your AC on a timer or a low setting will make all the difference when it comes to keeping Fido’s body temp at a normal level. If you don’t have an AC, opening a window in a shaded room or putting up blinds can help regulate the temperature inside, along with ensuring your friends have a bowl of ice water and maybe even a fan propped up by their favorite spot.

Frozen Treats! Depending on your pet’s personal preferences (which we all know they have), the sound of the ice cream truck can be just as exciting for them as it is for us during a hot summer day. While actual dairy might not be great for them, there are a few easy frozen treats you can make for all kinds of animals. Mix their favorite snacks into a Kong toy and top it off with water to freeze for a few hours as a doggy popsicle, or freeze little bits of fresh fish in ice cube trays for your cat to play with for a while. To keep it really simple, a frozen water bottle makes for an easy toy and hours of licking fun for anybody. Watch out for brain freezes!

Water, Water, Water During the hot months, it’s recommended that both you and your furry friends should increase your water intake by, like, a lot. Staying hydrated is the easiest and surest way of ensuring heat-related illnesses and downfalls are kept at bay, even when it hits triple digits. Packing a hydro flask is natural for most Oregonians and can provide a refresher for you and an easy transport for ice water to trade off to your best bud in a bowl or cup when needed. There are also several pet-specific water totes that have come out recently, like M&M’s dog water dispenser or Auto Dog’s portable drinking cup. Products like these and more are available at our local PetCo or PetSmart, or online on Amazon.
