Trends of the

Decade As we enter the new decade, looking back on old trends and highlights of the past decade is obligatory. To keep it simple, I’ve highlighted 10 of the best trends of the 2010 decade.

Words by Shannon Enriquez

Sustainability: Making a conscious effort to buy and produce more sustainable items has become a popular movement in the more recent years. Due to extreme climate changes and climate advocates such as Greta Thunberg, people’s attention has gravitated towards the environment.

Boy Brows: Say good riddance to thin, drawn-on, 90’s brows and wave hello to big, bushy, unplucked brows. Seen on Cara Delevingne on the runway or Lily Collins on the big screen, celebrities everywhere have embraced their natural, messy brow.

Athleisure:

Yodel Boy: The meme of the decade. Not only one of the most famous memes, but the most memorable. This meme even made appearances in different memes, becoming even more popular.

Planking: Unlike anything we have seen before. At first, I was unsure how I felt about this movement, but after examining it more closely, this movement looks more like a performance. With everyone coordinating how and where they will be laying in unison, this photo opportunity becomes a performance. My only critique is how unsanitary this is.

The Bee Movie: At first glance, this movie is just like any other. But after watching this movie, I now know this is not the case. The obscurity of having a bee fall in love with a woman is too complex for any of us.

Glossier: One brand I am particularly grateful for. Glossier focuses on skincare before makeup, aiming to accentuate the natural glow we all possess and to have fun with the makeup we choose to apply. The brand is extremely popular, and for good reason.

Silly Bandz: An old form of currency for middle schoolers. These stretchy bracelets were most popular during my middle school days. Coming in various shapes and colors, kids would trade and exchange their Silly Bandz in order to have the coolest collection.

Honestly, thank goodness. No more jeans everyday, more leggings and joggers. This trend is a saving grace for college students everywhere. Thanks to Kim and Kanye, athleisure can be trendy and worn many different ways. Coming from the gym to class? No problem, athleisure is there for you.

Flower crowns: Say what you want about flower crowns, but you can’t deny that they’re pretty. I’m not talking about the ones sold by Forever21, but real ones, with real flowers. Take Vanessa Hudgens as your inspo; she is known to rock a flower crown and every Coachella, she proves herself.

One Direction: The absolute peak of the 2010s. I don’t know a single person who is not only familiar with the band, but also has positive things to say about them. Despite the band forming and separating all within the same decade, all members still remain talented and likeable. 4

20 Things to do to Kick Off The Year Words by Sophie Bange | Photos by Lauren Bruce

They say hindsight is 20/20, but why can’t we look forward with some clarity? Even simple tasks like buying a planner or rearranging your furniture can get you looking into the new year with a new perspective. Start 2020 off on the right foot with these 20 things to do to get yourself organized and prepped for success.

PRE-SPRI NG CLEANING: Relieve the winter slump with a nice clean home. And I don’t

just mean wiping down the counters - dust those baseboards! Mop that floor! A deep clean will get 2020 started off on the right foot.

START THAT TV SHOW: We all have that one show or movie that we’ve always wanted

to see but haven’t gotten around to. Watch it now, before the year really takes off!

PLAN IT OUT: Whether you use Google calendar or an old-fashioned paper

CATCH UP WITH FRIENDS: You’ve probably all been apart for the break, so schedule a

GET OUTSIDE:

VOLUNTEER: Helping out your community is always rewarding, so start off

planner, take some time to write out your winter term schedule. Include classes and work shifts, of course, but consider even scheduling study breaks to be fully set for success.

While everyone loves a cozy winter spent inside, it’s always getting fresh air can help calm you and clear your mind. Bundle up and breathe in a fresh new year.

SCHEDULE A DENTIST APPOINTMENT: You know you’re overdue for one!

date to catch up! Take turns telling the best stories from your holidays over a meal or a drink.

on a positive note that you can carry with you throughout the year.

LEARN HOW TO MEAL PREP: Meal prepping is a great Sunday activity that saves you money and is usually healthier than eating out. Take care of yourself this year by making it part of your weekly schedule.

ADOPT A PLANT: CHANGE UP YOUR HOME SCENTS: Most renters don’t allow fur babies, but that doesn’t mean you I know you’re still burning that apple-scented candle you’ve can’t get something to take care of. There are plenty of plants at local nurseries looking for homes.

had since October. Switch it up with wintery scents like pine and birch or cranberry. Christmas may be over, but your house can still smell like it!

CLEAN YOUR BACKPACK: It’s good to purge those old papers and granola bar wrappers at least once a term.

GET TO THE GYM (JUST ONCE): Every “new year, new you” article will tell you to set fitness

goals, but I know it’s easier said than done. The hardest part is taking the first plunge - so do it! Just going once will ease some discomfort, and can be the start of a healthy new habit.

CLEAN YOUR CLOSET: Whether you’re pulling out your puffy coat or doing a full purge,

the new year is a perfect time to decide who you want to be and what you want to put out into the world. Sell your clothes for some extra pocket cash or donate them to a charity near you.

BECOME A “YES” MAN (WITHIN REASON): We can all find excuses for not going on that trip, spending

time with friends or applying to that internship. Kick off 2020 by practicing saying “yes” - just go for it!

TAKE DOWN YOUR HOLIDAY DECORATIONS: You don’t want to be that person who still has Christmas lights up in February. As fun and festive as the holidays are, taking down your decorations will help you transition into the new season.

DELETE SOCIAL MEDIA APPS: Even if just for a week or two, try going without one (or all) of

the social media apps that take the most of your time. Deleting apps will prevent you from constantly checking your socials, and force you to look up every now and then.

ORGANI ZE YOUR DESKTOP: Chances are you’ve accumulated numerous files, memes and

screenshots on your computer’s desktop over the course of the term. Clean it up to start fresh.

REFLECT: Think back on the last year and reflect on everything you’ve accomplished. You’re killing it!

MAKE YOUR OWN LIST: What do you want to accomplish this year? Writing down your goals and setting deadlines can help make your goals feel tangible.

REARRANGE YOUR FURNITURE: Simply moving things around can make your home feel like new. Winter 2020

NEW DECADE NEW WARDROBE

Words by Skyla Patton | Photos by Shannon Enriquez

When we take a look back at the start of the decade, most of us cringe, others reminisce, but we can all agree that lots of change has happened. The start of a new decade means evolving, and that starts with your wardrobe.

Instagram, however, holds a different aesthetic. From their “day in the life of a model” series, to celebrity makeup tutorials done in their bathroom, Instagram reaches a wider audience. You truly get an inside look into what the trendiest pieces are and how to style them.

For some, you may not know where to begin when it comes to upgrading your wardrobe. Start with finding your style; what makes you most confident? To find your niche, I’ve highlighted three Instagram profiles that should help guide you to find your own personal style.

For others, you may know your style and how you like to dress already. I recommend taking your personal style into your home. How can your chic-yet-casual look be represented in your living space? For this, try looking in boutiques in your town; they’ll surprise you with unique pieces, and they’re local. Boutiques will have a wide range of styles and won’t be as mainstream as going to, say, Restoration Hardware. Other stores, such as Anthropologie where their buyers pull pieces from antique shops and boutiques, are certain to have great items, but with a price tag. With a mixture of these two means for shopping for your home, translating your personal style into your home will be seamless.

@papermagazine: This magazine profile features celebrities’ most iconic moments, from the cast of Little Women eating Wendy’s in a carriage on set, to Laura Dern dancing on Tik Tok. Taking note of what the celebrities wear when they’re not on the big screen gives insight to fashion trends and different styles that other magazines might not notice. Paper also highlights certain brands that are either up-and-coming or are currently popular and writes a report about them. Following this profile will make you the most powerful underground fashion expert you’ve ever seen. @diet_prada: If you seek drama and love to stir the pot, this account was made for you. Read all about the most recent scandals within the fashion industry, from knock-off couture dresses, to “what to expect” in next years fashion week. This profile also voices their opinion on the brands they like and dislike, letting you know which brands are popular, and which ones need to go. @voguemagazine: I know what you’re thinking, of course, Vogue is the place to look for fashion advice. But I also know that Vogue can be intimidating and seemingly unattainable. Flipping through the magazine full of couture pieces and fashion shows seems too far out of reach for most. Their

Winter 2020

My last, and maybe most crucial tip, is to observe those around you. Whether you’re studying at university or working in a city, pay attention to small details people include in their wardrobe. A unique or personal touch to an outfit can make something go from average to memorable. Watching those around you allows you to see what’s in style and how people are styling it. When I first arrived at university, I noticed a trend of two distinct pairs of booties being worn. It made sense, they were practical for the weather, but also fashionable. I ended up buying a pair of booties out of sheer willingness to fit in, but they have now become my absolute favorite pair of shoes. Sometimes, the most popular item is popular for a reason — because they’re great. Fashion is evolving, ever-changing, and full of trends, but your style is unique to you and what makes you most confident. Finding your own style is crucial to being a more confident person.

Home Decor for The Decades Words by Skyla Patton

Just because the decade is changing doesn’t mean your comfort zone has to — and we’re not talking about the metaphorical one. Studies have shown that more than just the aesthetic is impacted by the way you choose to decorate and maintain your physical space; it changes the way you feel. Here are some tips and tricks on keeping your space in the decade you like best (without letting the dust collect).

Identify Your Style The first and most important step of any redecorating process is the vision board. Having a clear idea of what you’d like your space to look like will give you something to focus on and help prevent overcrowding, of physical stuff and ideas. Use a push-pin board to cut and pin from magazines or newspapers, or opt for the digital version and create a new board on Pinterest to get your creative juices flowing.

Color Matters! While you might be someone who just grabs for your go-to favorite shade of baby blue, the color scheme of your home can make a big impact on the overall vibe of the room. Certain shades are also associated with different decades, and can help to solidify the look. Once you’ve established the aesthetic you’re shooting for, you can bring a color pallet of your choice (thank you to the paint samples at Home Depot) when you go shopping to keep in mind what you’re looking for. For example, the 50s were engulfed by bright cherry reds of diner stools or black and white checkerboard floors, whereas the 70s were much more monochromatic and highlighted neutral colors like yellows and caramels.

Don’t Be Afraid to Go Old I know the marble busts of founding fathers and chandeliers might seem a little outdated, but there are gems to be found in the depths of historical decorating. Legends of the interior design industry such as geometric art deco and streamline moderne came out of the 1920s and 30s, inspiring the “minimalist” aesthetics that have flooded today’s trends. Check out estate sales or secondhand furniture stores for hidden scores and treasures (pro tip: really look through the back of stores and get out of the distracting “display sets” at the entrance to get to the good stuff).

Pick and Choose Your Trends Just because your living room is themed to replicate the chill energy of the Woodstock-inspired 60s, doesn’t mean you have to have a floor to ceiling peace sign on the wall (not to say you can’t have one, either). Home decor is all about making your safe space as comfortable and wonderful as it can be for you and your unique personality. While it can be helpful to limit your vision board to a certain aesthetic, don’t fall victim to an overboard of one time period: pick and choose as it feels right for you, whether or not that means mix-matching some aesthetics.

Avoid Overcomplicating Things/ Overwhelming Your Senses It can be easy to get swept up in the chaos and excitement of designing (or redesigning) a new space, but it’s important to keep your boundaries in mind and remember that the most important key to good decor is your comfortability. No matter how cute that painting is, it won’t be good for you if it’s crammed on a wall with no white space or in a closet with the other seven paintings you’ve bought and not hung up. Check in regularly with your space to make sure there is no clutter or overcrowding, and go through a roster of questions while shopping: how happy will this new item make me? Do I know what I’m going to do with it? Will I be thinking about this item in a week if I don’t buy it? Answering some of these questions can help with the process of elimination while keeping your space comfortable.

New Year,

Same

New Year's Eve

Words & Photos by Lauren Bruce

1

Writing a New Year’s Resolution that seems easy enough to work.

If you’re really prepared, then this year you wrote a resolution that was just simple enough you felt confident about it in the moment, but now you’re pretty indifferent about. Maybe you committed to becoming a morning person, or keeping a plant alive, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. But on January 1st you had that New Year’s Eve headache and couldn’t bear the acoustic stairs. That’s alright, remembering to write “/20” instead of “/19” on the first try is accomplishment enough.

Contrary to the concept of Christmas Eve, the world decided that the best way to celebrate the survival of the human species is to rejoice in drunken stupor late into the night, preferably until there’s no chance of you remembering the occasion. Of course, this also reduces the chances of creating real change in the new year as dictated by the concept of “New Year’s Resolutions,” when you wake up on the first day of the new year nauseous and with an aching headache and decide “new year, new me” will have to wait. We’ve all been there. This cycle is what keeps the world working comfortably, just as it should. If you did choose to partake in the New Year’s Eve that marked the beginning of a new decade, you probably joined millions of others in these traditions, which in recent years, have become incredibly important to young adults everywhere. Here are the top five trendy traditions.

14

Winter 2020

2

Dressing up and searching for a last minute party, preferably one with the large gold number balloons. Traditionally, party-going adults on New Years will realize last minute that they didn’t really plan anything for New Years, and thus the annual party-search commences. If you did it correctly, the party you heard about from your older sister’s

your friends agreed that it was the only way to avoid great misfortune. You all are the lucky ones.

5

Finally, watching the really big ball fall anticlimactically slowly to the ground.

The moment that finishes it all and one of the most timehonored traditions of New Year’s Eve happens seconds before midnight, when friends and strangers alike gather around their television sets and in the street to scream frantically as the ball drops to the floor. When you were a kid you probably expected it to fall faster, more similarly to a giant bowling ball into a crowd of screaming pins (that’s why they were screaming, right?). However, as an adult old enough to stay up until the ball drops you realize that it actually is quite slow, symbolizing the ever-worsening perspective on life as you grow older. Happy New Years! *streamers* Winter 2020
